Really happy with them. Everyone I talked to said that was the place to take a SmartCar for repair. They got it taken care of and oil changed. We also asked them to diagnosis the AC, but the processor was out. Didn't opt to repair that due to cost. They took care of the other issues with no problem. I only continued to bring my car back in on faith they would fix it, but it never was, I can't afford to keep returning to Procter, my honest advice is to take your vehicle somewhere else in town, despite their friendly service, these guys misdiagnosed a leak three different times. After so many misdiagnoses and being charged for shop time and parts my car never even needed in the first place, I will never return to Procter automotive or suggest them to anyone with a BMW. As we approached Abilene on I-20 during a cross-country trip, the rear end of our car, pulling a trailer no less, had become so noisy that we couldn't ignore it any longer. We went to a hotel and I found Proctor Automotive on Yelp. The first thing Monday morning I pulled in and asked them to diagnose the noise. It was evident that this was a very busy shop and I wondered if we might not wait around most of the day just for an estimate. The service writer was very courteous and seemed to understand the spot we were in, but said that he couldn't make any promises about turnaround time, given how busy they were. On the way back to my hotel the courtesy driver also gave me little assurance about a speedy repair and told me that Proctor had 8 full-time mechanics working 50 hours per week. Mentally I tried to accept the idea of spending several days in Abilene. No more than an hour later Proctor called with a stethoscope diagnosis that the rear pinion bearing was the source of the noise and they were going to open the cover and look inside with my OK. In another half hour I got another call saying that all the bearings in the rear end must be replaced, given the amount of metal debris they found in the oil. Still no real estimate of how long any repair would take. After another half hour, the owner himself (Jimmy) called to give me the bad and not-so-bad news. The repair was not going to be cheap, but they had located all the parts and he assured me that their rear end mechanic was a real expert who could set it up to operate like new. The best news was that they were going to do their best to get the car out that same day! Sure enough at about 4:00 p.m., I got the call that told me that my car was ready. I could have hugged them all--I guess it's a good thing that I was on the telephone and not talking face-to-face. :^\ The final report is that we put 4500 miles on the repaired rear end, still pulling a trailer, and it never gave us a moment of concern during the rest of our long trip. I was shown some pictures of some of the classic cars that they work on at Proctor. Apparently they even do some restoration work. This is no ordinary shop and they have been around for a long time in Abilene. I wish they were in my home town. read more

So, I got pulled over TWICE by the local Abilene Dudley DoRights within a span of ten minutes for a headlight that was out. Apparently they had put out an APB to pull over the dangerous Toyota Camry with California license plates and a missing headlight. (The crusading crime fighter told me it was the latter problem for which I was pulled over, but I suspected the former folly of the license plates was the real crime.) I Yelped auto repair shops and found Procter automotive. I got there about 7:15 am, and they had me on the road by 8:00 am, and for half of what I was prepared to spend. My husband went into Abilene and asked around(since we are from the Austin area) who would they recommend for car repair and 4 different people replied Procter Auto without hesitation. We showed up Monday morning at Procter Auto and we were greeted with a friendly service advisor Mr. Graham. He assured us that they would get my car fixed as soon as possible. My daughter is a student at Abilene Christian. When her car started acting up I reached out to a few friends living in the area. They wholeheartedly recommended Procter Automotive. She took her vehicle there last year for some minor things and experienced great service. This year when the heavy rains caused flash floods, the water rose quickly and did some damage to some areas of her vehicle. We experienced fair pricing, GREAT communication, and over the top friendliness again. They will be honest with you if nothing is broken. I had dropped off my truck to this shop to have them look at my emergency brake line and gas tank. I had ran something over in the road and it scratched my gas tank pretty good and ripped off my emergency brake cable. I asked them to give me an estimate of the repairs and they quoted me $600 just for the emergency brake cable replacement. I asked why it was so high and they said that $300 of it is labor cost. I'm a mechanic that works on jet engines and something as small as an emergency brake cable should not take more than 2 hours with someone with two left hands. The pricing at this shop is absolutely ridiculous and I would not recommend going here if you are looking for a fair and honest mechanic. Side note the emergency brake line for my truck only cost $200 and that's for the entire assembly sent from OEM. I would not recommend going to this overpriced shop. read more

I took my 2015 Hyundai Sonota to Procter Automotive after what I thought was my starter went out. Ended up being a faulty battery. The initial inspection was $44, the labor was $77, and $249 for the new battery bringing the total to $380~ after there 10% military/AAA discount. The price of the battery was slightly up charged (found the same one online for $170-200~) but the labor price was fair (AAA battery labor replacement costs are $89-$129, but don't service the Abilene area). Overall the service managers were prompt, respectful, and trustworthy. May be a little tid bit more pricey (although not by much with the discount) then other avenues in this instance but I have confidence they stand by their work. Side note: they quoted 50% less then the Hyundai dealership to replace the starter. Hopefully I won't have to be back but if I have future issues with my vehicle this will be my first stop. read more

Unfortunately, my check engine light came on when passing through town. The car itself ran fine but I decided to have it looked at to be on the safe side. Procter Automotive has good reviews so I went to them. The guys were extremely nice and fit me in although they were busy, which at the time, I was grateful for. I was confidently told my car had a "bad tank of gas" and that's why my vehicle was throwing codes. I was charged a diagnostic (the codes thrown), fuel cleaner, and a sensor cleaned = $220. The "bad tank of gas" didn't sit well with my husband, but hey, we are no experts. Soon after I left the check engine light came back on (was warmed by Proctor this may happen...weird). When I arrived at my destination, I had another mechanic shop look at my vehicle because I had ran several tanks of good gas through the car and even added another cleaner but the check engine light stayed on. The new mechanic immediately thought it was a different issue so he checked the codes the car threw off to be sure and then some other possible things. Turns out it is a computer problem the dealership needs to handle, nothing mechanical. He also did not charge me for diagnosing the problem since they could not fix it. WOW. Maybe Procter did all they could, but I was charged for unnecessary work and time so it makes it seem like they either guessed or took advantage of the situation. I could have bought a $5 bottle of cleaner on my own and would have gladly just paid labor. So while I hate to give one star because the staff was nice, it just doesn't make up for charging me that much for things the vehicle obviously didn't need. read more

Wonderful place! Nice and clean, professional, put together. Had another place in town quote me $330 for a simple fix only requiring some labor. I'm a woman, so I suppose they thought I was stupid. Procter fixed it in a few hours for less than a third of the price. They're to the point, honest, and kind. It doesn't feel shady and you don't have to worry about feeling like you're being taken advantage of. They have a night drop-off option that is a hectic life saver! It's nice to feel like someone still takes pride in their work and charges for the work they do, not crazy amounts for bogus profit. These are the kind of people I want to give my money to. Trusted them a couple of years ago with my car and they did well. However, this time was not good. Took my car in because it was smoking and they said my head gasket was leaking. Charged me more than my family mechanic back home said they should have. My car never stopped smoking. Called about it and they told me there was stuff on my engine that would have to burn off (why didn't they clean it off?). After a week of smoking, took the vehicle back in and they said it was the power steering hose. Wanted to charge me almost $100 more for the part than what the Honda dealer charges. They completely deny that they misdiagnosed the problem when it was first brought to them. They say that the power steering hose must have come off after I left their shop. Really? Head gaskets can leak slowly for thousands of miles and should be replaced but not an emergency. They usually don't produce smoke like my car was putting off. I didn't use them to replace my power steering hose and won't be using their services any more. They are usually busy and that can be a sign of a good business but maybe they are too busy to do a good job. read more
