Given all the great reviews, I thought why not get your haircut in someone's home...how bad could it be?!?!? Well, I have to say pretty bad. Danae is really nice and seemed to be listening to what I was asking for but was unable to follow through. It felt like I was getting my haircut by someone with little or no experience the way she was hacking at it with dull scissors. It was actually pretty scary. I really do not believe she knows what she is doing. Through our conversation, it was apparent she has never had formal training and has learned this trade first with men and then moved onto taking on women clients. I was truly disappointed with my haircut. She gave me the heaviest bangs I have ever had (which I didn't ask for), the length is uneven and the layers are not hidden or fall nicely like I ask. Although Danae said that I would be able to come back to her if I should have any problems with the cut, I will NOT be going back as I am afraid she will make this bad haircut worse. The best course of action is to try and hide the bad haircut with styling and try to grow out the damage while trying to find an actual salon to go to next time for my haircut. It was NOT worth the savings coming here over a salon with professionals. I do not like giving this review as I understand this is someone's business. I do feel bad but as a newcomer to San Francisco and someone who uses Yelp religiously I feel it is only fair to other users that I provide feedback whether the services were good or bad. Going to work immediately following a haircut is brave. It's almost akin to going to work naked nightmares. You feel raw, and vulnerable, unsure of yourself. Will people notice? What if nobody says anything? Fortunately, my coif was in the skilled hands of Danae. I trusted the Yelp reviews enough to schedule an appointment on a Thursday morning immediately before work and my office Xmas party. She's two blocks from my favorite local cafe, the Bean Bag, where I whiled away the morning with a java until my 10 am appointment. Now I've subjected myself to the intimidating salon atmosphere with techno pulsating and hipper-than-thou stylists who act like THEY'RE the customer and bully you into styling your hair the way THEY want it. I felt at ease in her cozy home parlor. She's easy to talk to, nice, funny, and a great listener. And she gave me an awesome haircut! I've gotten so many compliments on my new 'do, and I swear it looks better every day. It actually looks cooler when I DON'T blow dry it, a feat no hairdresser has been able to accomplish. Danae did a great job on my curly hair. Like a lot of the other reviews, I have anxiety about getting my hair cut by a new person. However, Danae was super friendly, really nice, and most importantly, good at her job. She took a look at the pictures I showed her, and cut my hair the length I'd hoped. She even offered to have me back if it turned out different than I wanted (very possible with curly hair), but I was satisfied the first time. I've been seeing Danae since last October, and she's cut my hair several times. I think her technique is great, she listens to what I want, and gives me a cut that lasts - I usually only get my hair cut 3 or 4 times a year. Her cuts look great for a long time, I just had my hair cut again today and I look fabulous :), if I do say so myself!! I have been going to my regular salon for more than 5 years, but I wanted to go for something different this time. I heard that Danae work on layers from my friends so I gave her a try. It turned out that she has a "salon" inside of her house! Is this even legal? I was already skeptical about her professionalism (and not even sure if she has a business permit for this?). But since I was already there might as well follow through with it. The whole time I was sitting in her chair, she blabbed away about her personal life as if I care! She compared herself with other salons and how she got to where she is. I ignored her arrogance because my hair is in her hands now, I didn't want any bad consequences for pointing it out. I just sat quietly and have as little comments to her stories as possible. After the cut, I was TERRIFIED I almost cried! She thin out my hair so much that my cow lick became so obvious as if I'm balding! And she even joked that my ancestors were probably related to some prematurely bald king of England. I am only 25, this is EMBARRASSING!!! What kind of school did she come from? Obviously she did not get any training on customer service. She said it's in my genes for thin hair. If she is a haircare expert, she should know what I can do about this. But she went on saying my hair will grow back to cover the bald spot in 3-6 weeks. What?!? I'm going to work tomorrow. I work at a gym, and image is everything!!! Then she went on to charge me full price for what she did to me. I'm usually not a person to confront someone, but this is outrageous! I'm so upset, I will never go back here again! I can't believe how she gets 5 stars in a row like this. If she didn't pay Yelp for these 5 stars reviews, I don't think she would be in business by now. read more

I myself have never been to Danae, but I feel compelled to leave a review because my partner of five years (who is extremely particular and has never before been even remotely happy about her haircuts) absolutely loves Danae and her work. I hate to write this but I could not honestly recommend Danae. Her salon in her home is very nice and she's a very pleasant conversationalist, but I did not walk away with the cut that I wanted. When scheduling my appointment with her over email, I sent over at least 4 photos of what I was looking for which were long layers for my already long hair. I asked that the shortest layer be only a few inches than the longest part of my hair, and that's not what I received. At the end of my appointment I walked away with chin length layers all around my head and a huge differential between my shortest layers and the longest layers, which reach to my mid-back. I'm lucky to have long straight hair that I've never had to blowdry or style with my usual cut, but this one is so unflattering that I've had to blowdry my hair after every shower, even just to go to work. Danae did not give me the cut I showed her pictures of and paid for, and now I'll have to grow my hair out for months. I feel traumatized many weeks after the haircut, and I know how traumatic a bad haircut can be for others as well, which is why I write this. Two stars for Danae's personality and responsiveness over email, but I will not be seeing her again. read more

Danae is awesome! After the last person who cut my hair went on a spiritual journey to rural Virginia (but that's another story for another time) I searched for a long time to find the right replacement. I was disappointed time and again. I thought, "How hard could it be to cut a mohawk?" Apparently the answer is, "very hard." Some got the shaved part right but couldn't touch the hawk; others were literally scared of both. Finally I found Danae, who does an amazing job with my hair. What's more, she does a great job with my girlfriend's hair too, which is long and very different than mine. One BIG plus about Danae is that, although she's an excellent stylist, she's 100% willing to listen to you, take advice and work with you to give you a good cut. My hair is easy. It's always totally straight and shiny and healthy, and I never have any problems. That's why I recently decided that I refuse to pay a ton of money to get my hair cut. Thanks to Yelp, I found this wonderful woman who charges, it seems, half the average San Francisco rate and is way more interesting to talk to. Ever go to the salon and feel all stupid because someone's pulling at your hair and you have nothing to say and the haircut seems to last for hours? Not here. Danae and I discussed authors and talked about our high school memories. She's well read and intelligent, and my haircut took slightly less than 30 minutes. Wow, this was amazing. It feels so great to have someone cut your hair with so much skill and confidence. No styling, just looks great. Although i was a first time customer, i got credit when i realized i had forgotten my checkbook and was short on cash. As soon as I got my first paycheck temping, I got on yelp to find someone who could cut my hair at an affordable price with out goin to some crappy chain. I've been going to Danae now for a few years after getting one too many interpretive haircuts from my previous stylist. Because of her reasonable prices and flexibility in scheduling I am able to keep up a fairly high maintenance short ,precise haircut without breaking the bank. Danae has always given me a great, adorable hairstyle.She is great at layering hair to make the best of what you've got. I am only a recent convert to layering. It makes the difference between lengthy blow dry/flat iron sessions and running out the door after just combing and adding a little product. The extra sleep I get is great! I regularly get compliments on her do even when it is growing out. She is also very realistic about what my fine, thin hair can and cannot do. I have a tendency to point out styles on people with completely different types of hair than currently grows on my head. One thing I will say for all hairstylists. If you see them doing something you are not comfortable with say something. They are not mind readers. I guess it's easier to not say anything and leave a nasty review later. read more

I had a great experience with Danae! My haircut was super fun - I had great convos with Danae about a bunch of interesting topics - and I love my cut! My hair was previously really long/fine and one blah length, but Danae added long layers and a cute side swept bang (just like the pictures I brought in!) which look great and seems very low maintenance. My hair has a lot more body and I walked out of her adorable apartment with a big smile on my face :) Can't beat that kind of service for $35! read more

Danae was great & it's nice of find a stylist that does a nice razor cut. After some email exchanges, we set an appointment & at the last minute she was able to fit my daughter, who was visiting, in for a cut too. We were both very, very happy with the results! No frills & I love that we were in & out. She is very pleasant. I even learned of a new product, clay, which has been working out beautifully. I ride a scooter & having helmet hair at work is a pain. Here's the problem: you can either go to some ridiculous salon stocked with $80 shampoos and boys with that over-one-eye-emo-cut thing in every other chair or you go to the local lawn-mower-style barber whose list of possible styles is "Little Boy," Frat Boy," or "Little Boy." On one hand, you don't want to spent your week's pay on a haircut, while on the other, you don't want to look like you spent last night with a bowl on your head and your roomie's sewing sheers. That's why we have Danae. I've been getting my hair over at Danae's place for going on four years now and I've never had a bad experience. I've been to Danae twice now. The first time I got a pretty simple cut. I've had enough bad experiences to check out a stylist before letting him/her go all freestyle. Danae was fabulous. She was serious about finding out what I wanted and asked just the right questions to make sure we understood each other. I was pleased with the cut she gave me, and bonus, because she was so clear about how my hair behaves the cut grew in nicely...no weird boxy pieces or having to get a desperate haircut 4 weeks later. The second time I went in, I asked for something a little more fancy. Danae again showed real interest in what I wanted. She also did the cut in stages to make sure we were both still on board. When she was done, I had exactly the cut I was looking for. Since I got this cut I have gotten multiple compliments from friends and strangers alike! Beyond having mad skills, Danae is friendly, funny, and efficient. She has the perfect balance of interacting without being overbearing or stopping the cut to tell a 25 minute long story. Basically, she respects that there are 2 people in the room...I love that. On top of everything else, she is reasonably priced, which is something near and dear to this scraping-by student! I will continue to see Danae for the perfect inverted bob as long as her doors are open. She is a literal savior in a sea of sinking ship, overpriced, and under-talented hair salons. read more

hmmmm, after all the hype, i was pretty undazzled. danae is nice and sweet, but that's the extent of the positive (aside from the price...which brings to mind the old expression, "you get what you pay for"). if you want a hair cut that's akin to a 70's tv mom, get your hair cut by danae. if you want your hair cut by unsharpened scissors, get your hair cut by danae. if you don't want your hair washed, or even wet, get your hair cut by danae. i'm growing my hair and saving money for my next SALON styling. read more

Danae is an excellent hair stylist. I like to just towel dry my hair and let it do what it does as it dries. Years of explaining this to stylists who still gave me cuts that required spray/gel/blow dry etc. Danae had no trouble with this concept and has given me excellent cuts at an excellent price since she started doing my hair. read more

Although I am not a huge fan of yelp in general, it did help me find Danae, and so like others I've made this account solely to write this review. I moved to SF a few years ago & liked the idea of an independent stylist cutting hair in their own home; she had great reviews & had a ridiculously reasonable rate, so I emailed her and set up my first appt--which was incredibly easy. I had long, curly hair back then, which Danae has skillfully cut into layers, shaved both sides, styled into a pixie, maintained well during grow-out phases... this woman has done so many things to my hair, and it always looks fly. I've received numerous compliments over the years, and frequently have referred others to her. My best friend is a notoriously picky, kinda neurotic New Yorker & she loooved the cut Danae gave her a couple years ago. At this point, Danae has probably cut my hair dozens of times; she also has a rate for bangs only. I think one of Danae's major strengths is her ability to execute more "radical" cuts/styles in addition to straightforward, classic/ simple cuts or layering. I don't really know of any stylists who have her skill set. I've seen all sorts of people get cuts from her, curly/straight haired, short/long, fades, etc. I trust her with any hair related decision of mine; she will give very honest and practical advice & will never make unwanted alterations, always checking in with you the entire process. She is seriously the bomb & and an interesting, very pleasant person to boot. I genuinely really like her as a person and value her skill as a stylist. read more
