We wanted to check out one of the local bars after the Taste of Charlotte, and ended up choosing Prohibition since it had the upstairs patio. Sadly said patio was full to capacity when we went up, but there was plenty of free tables and space indoors, so we decided to grab a beer and a seat. I dug the interior of the place, which was dark, cool (temperature wise) and played decent music (no hip hop/rap/country). I liked how the walls had this old timey feel to them with these wooden panels. The bar stools were fairly comfortable, and they even had game five of the Stanley Cup finals on, so that was a plus. The bartender was friendly and our beers were served quickly. Prices were a bit steep ($5.25 a glass), which is always a little disheartening. What was even worse to see was that they didn't offer any food at all. Now there was no way we were going to order any food after taking in Taste of Charlotte, but when I grab a beer, I tend to couple it with chicken wings or some other finger food. The high price and lack of a food menu means there won't be a return trip planned for me. Next time I'm in the area I'll check out one of the other joints. read more

So as I walked in I noticed that there were an abundance of people not being carded that looked under the legal drinking age. I understand that it is college night.... But shouldn't bars be more on their game on these nights? When I walked inside there was an abundance of children drinking fruity drinks, and a terrible DJ. I heard ALOT about this place................. But when I got there I thought totally different.......... So, have you ever been to a frat house or college party? You know the space is sparse, some cheesy decorations and a few novelities....and add in dark colors, loud music, cheap alcohol, and large populations of 20 year olds (half of which probably either don't have a job or work multiple jobs) all getting way too drunk....particularly during the week. This club was quite fun. I attended on college night which are thursday's. It was absolutely packed but the DJ had a good set. There is a very strict no drinks in the bathroom rule even thought I just had a cup of water, but it was still understandable. Would go again. good experience. read more

I really enjoy going to Prohibition. I enjoy the music and the fact I can dance my butt off no problem, and no one seems to mind what it looks like. Occasionally you'll get someone who wants to hit on you, but geeze take it as a compliment, and tell them to keep moving buddy. This will happen at any bar, so no big deal to me. Sometimes Prohibition does get packed, and all of a sudden its a big sweaty dance party, but this is what I like when I want to have a fun time. It's not your 'chill' bar. This is where I go to shake it, and I love the crowd! Last visit here someone started a spin the bottle dance competition, you never know what you're going to get. Prohibition is one of my favorite bars in the city and has always provided a fun night out. Ingredients they provide for a fun night - drinks, DJ, atmosphere. Drinks - it is always possible to get a drink. This is a basic element of a night out I have found an abnormal number of uptown bars unable to provide. Prohibition takes this a step further and has the ingredients for almost every drink or shooter you can imagine. The bartenders are friendly and impressively on top of their job slinging out complicated drinks in record time to help the next patron. DJ - they have a dedicated DJ booth and usually have an outstanding DJ on. They also have an assortment of lights to enhance the music experience. Bottom line - if you are around later in the night there will be an active dance floor to show off your moves. Atmosphere - if you go early check out the neat alcohol related quotes on the wall. The exposed brick and wood adds to the prohibition theme. The vibe is usually laid back if you go early and never stuffy or snobby even if you go late. Prohibition has bouncers and security walking around at night to make sure everyone is in line. I love the outdoor patio! It is spacious and a great haven for someone like me who occasionally needs a little break from the noise and crowd. Bar hopping and late night dancing aren't my first choice of a night out any more but when it happens I am glad that Prohibition can consistently deliver the ingredients for a fun night out. read more

I came here with a group of 5 girls celebrating a birthday on a Friday night, and I had a great time here. The bar wasn't too crowded around 9:30, and we were able to sit and hang out. The reason why we went here at all was because I am a fan of Drinking Made Easy, and in their Charlotte episode they came to Prohibition and got 2 drinks: One called a Chocolate Covered Strawberry shot, and the other was called American pie martini. When we got there, we were served by the bartender in the show! I was so excited, but tried to not be a huge dork (I may have only marginally succeeded). She made us the chocolate covered strawberry which includes strawberry moonshine, and was quite a large shot. None of us could take it down in one go at it. We also had the American pie, which is made with whipped cream vodka, and it was delish as well, although she told us she was out of the crushed graham cracker crumbs that normally rim the glass. Overall, great experience, I would definitely recommend. If you get there before 10:30, no cover! read more

The patio could be nicer for sure. The Apple Pie drink wasn't so great but the prohibition punch was pretty good. It did get kind of loud and annoying quickly right after we started our drinks. Setting was dope but drinks were just ok. I myself didn't get anything spectacular but the roommate ordered a rum punch in which she wasn't too pleased with. However, they were more than happy to replace the drink which too me places on DC just don't do so they certainly get stars from me for their customer service. This bar and the clientele were not our thing at all. We never would have visited it except some friends were hanging out there. We stayed for a couple drinks and left. The location is great. Not the easiest to find since there is a hidden outdoor staircase. It was a DJ the night we spent there. People hanging out both inside and outside. The people watching was the best part. read more

A coming together of the old Madison's and The Attic -- Prohibition is the kind of place you go to "dance" but never get to do so because the place is so crowded you spend the entire time bumping into strangers trying to find air to breathe, let alone the space to shake your tailfeather! All of that and a $5 cover? Sorry, no thanks. Kudos to the management for expanding the outdoor patio area from the old Attic -- which I used to love -- however its less than ideal now with all of the smokers that congregate outside. Oh well! To this place's defense, they are currently a victim of their own success and I've only been on the weekends. First time last week after a Checkers game and it was pleasant. Nothing extraordinary, but nothing terrible. It was crowded, but it's a BAR. Drinks were decent and not overly priced. The patio was very chilled and not as "packed". Would I be a "frequent" visitor here? Probably not with all the other great bars around town, but it was a nice first time experience and would recommend that if you're new to Charlotte that you give it a try --at least once! read more

Girlfriend and I went there after eating at The Cellar at Duckworth's thinking it was a similar speakeasy cocktail lounge. I ordered an old fashioned and the bartender had to ask where the muddle was, the other bartender said it fell behind the we'll weeks ago and that she had sneakily been using random objects to mash up drinks. I ended up having a whiskey 7 instead. My girlfriend ordered a greyhound and they poured Greygoose without asking and poured it with nasty concentrated grapefruit juice. Awesome after work spot for you and your coworkers....cool patio with views of the city, if your a people watcher it doesnt get much better than this. Also if your looking to do a quick get together or office party they are the way to go, after calling and setting it up all you really have to do is show up. We got some awesome specials specifically for our party. I can say that if you want to have a good convo with a bartender then after work is your best bet, but if your looking to just let loose and dance it up then do the late night thing. Also if you dont like crowds on a friday and saturday night then I probably wouldnt go out at all, you will get crowds at almost any bar you go to which is why most people go out on those nights! One of the first details I pay attention to when entering a bar/club is How I am greeted. The gentlemen at the door were extremely friendly and accommodating - unlike many bouncers I have had experiences with in the past. The bartenders were attentive to everyone in the bar, always looking to see if anyone was waiting for a drink. There were minimal times where anyone was on their phone or distracted. I was really pleased with the music and drinks as well as the crowd that this bar drew in. It was a nice mix between a bar and a club. Great atmosphere! We came on a Thursday to be apart of their Trivia, but it finished. We got there around 8. Winners of the trivia gave us their pitcher of beer! Wonderful hospitality. I had a bad experience with the workers here. They were moving tables to clear room and bouncer/worker runs into my legs with the table they were moving and continued moving and was cornering my against the wall. I put my hand out to let him know he was about to run over me again and he turned around and looked at me in a threatening manner. One of my favorite places to visit. For an Uptown spot, the music is usually on point. The guy/girl ratio is pretty good and the women always appear to be above average looking. They get to capacity very fast on the weekend and the line to wait can be very long, usually so long, it goes past Ri-Ra's (the Irish bar next door). Sucks they have a $5 cover, but overall, it's pretty worth it. In closing, this is a really good spot, but you can grow tired of it really fast if you went every weekend. I'd keep my visits to once a month-every few months, so its always enjoyable when you go. read more

This used to be Madison's and The Attic which were fun bars with a pretty strong following, but did not have the energy and pull that Prohibition has. I am not the biggest fan of the staff and have gotten some inconsistent service to say the least, but they have great music, I love the outside patio that overlooks the street, and the bathroom is huge and immaculate! I had to make sure I was calm before I wrote this review. Let me tell you about the discrimination and horrible service my boyfriend and I received from Prohibition. My boyfriend and I walk in and he goes straight to the bathroom and I have a seat near the stage a few feet from the bouncer. I was just sitting there minding my business. The bouncer asks me how my night was and I respond good. This is about 5 pm on Saturday. Then he says are you having a good time and I say yes. I clearly don't want to speak to him. My boyfriend comes out of the bathroom, goes to get us a drink and sits by me. The bouncer asks him to get up and my boyfriend asks him why. He doesn't get disrespectful at all. The bouncer continues to tell him he cannot be there. He grabs him up and starts to escort my boyfriend out. I start screaming and crying hysterically like let him go he didn't do anything. HE WAS TOLD TO LEAVE BECAUSE HE SAT BY ME. My boyfriend is also not white. The bouncer was not white either. I follow them out then a bouncer grabs me up and puts a light on us. At this point I'm incredibly upset and don't understand why my boyfriend could not sit by me. The bouncer was mad he couldn't spit anymore game. My boyfriend and I are both college educated and respectful. Neither of us were drunk either ... a little tipsy but I digress. We will never be back. To the business owner or manager: do not reach out to me ... nothing will ever erase the memory or the embarrassment. read more

This place is good for clubbing. For the twenty something crowd. Everyone was friendly. My biggest problem was the fact they have no drink menu. I like to go to places where they have a unique drink menu. The bartender was very helpful in giving us info on a place that has a decent cocktail menu.
