I can't stress how much I wish all the NYC area airports did not have all their food done by the OTG group. I've had some mixed experiences with many of the OTG spots at various airports, but my experience at Proof was about as bad as it gets. The main reason it was so bad was because I never got my food or the refund that the manager promised me. I won't bore you with all the details. Similar has happened to me at other OTG spots. As I have stated in other reviews, try to eat before going to Newark airport. I wish OTG did not have such a dominant position in the NYC airport market, but they do. Waitress is excessively rude and demanding. The food is over priced even for airport food. While the lounge chairs look deceptively big, they are actually pretty uncomfortable. Sat down, tried to scan boarding pass into the automated menu tablet. Was told that functionality didn't work. Looked at menu and found a simple burger with fries. Went through the wizard to the end, about 6 or 7 minutes worth of effort, then the server told me the credit card scanner didn't work either so my effort was in vain. So she "borrowed" the automated menu tablet and credit card scanner from the cubicle/table next to me, where somebody was sitting, and re-entered the entire order from scratch. The credit card did work this time. The wizard-type menu did not offer onion nor mayonnaise but the server told me she would make sure both were accompanied with the order. I asked for unsweetened tea with some splenda or equal instead of sugar. The order came and the burger was delivered with no onion or mayonnaise, and the tea without the splenda or equal I requested. I stopped a server and asked for onion, mayo, and sweetener and was told they had no mayonnaise but I could go to another restaurant in the terminal and request some. He did come back with the raw onion I requested though. No artificial sweetener showed up to offset the funky-tasting tea. No time to go out to restaurant so when we finally go settled, my boss and I wanted something good to eat and we saw Proof!! I am sooooo glad we stopped and took a set. Based on previous reviews I'm assuming we were lucky and actually got served by a waitress. She was super kind and polite. I loved the fact that they had grape fruit juice and it was pretty good. The menu is short and sweet and a lot there didn't appeal to me but I went with a spinach salad regardless. It was really yummy and I loved the mushrooms, egg yolk & bacon which came with it. I really enjoy the concepts of ordering from the iPad. It allows for me to grab a drink and not worry about paying when its time to catch my flight. My server was very attentive and offered to assist if I had any questions regarding the menu or the iPad. He stopped over to my table several times to check-in and greeted me with water and a smile as soon as I sat down. I think that they have a nice combination of technology and personalized service. I particularly liked the tables for two in the center of the airport terminal. It's very spacious and private for individual travelers. Since I often travel alone I get pushed to the awkward table or end of the bar. The design and comfort were really great! Prices are airport prices but you do get a decent selection: Wine starts at $11 for a 5oz pour and you can upgrade to a 9oz pour. Food is from $15 to 30 with a variety of sandwiches, salads and full meals. Oh and FYI, tips are automatically added on to your bill but you can adjust it. read more

Happened to pass by this place during a layover at EWR Terminal C and what really caught my eye was the sleek bar, iPads, plus the catchy music they were playing. Upon sitting down at the bar, one of the bartenders gave us a quick spiel on how to use the iPad to order food and drinks. My primary thought was, this is great! I don't have to talk to anyone, I can just order my drinks and food and the iPad let's you customize your order in great detail without the screw ups of verbal ordering and servers who don't listen/ignore you. Well, upon placing my order, it still took 10 min to receive our drinks even though there were barely any people at the bar. Apparently once you order- your receipt/order prints out at one designated station on one end of the bar. That day, the bartender seemed more interested in chatting it up with various customers (aka hitting on women) at the opposite end of the bar than checking on everyone else's orders. We had to flag down the bartender quite a few times to notify him we placed an order- this totally defeated the purpose of me having to directly speak with someone (#fail). For drinks I ordered a bloody mary and it was awful- watered down, not spicy, tasted like watery tomato juice. Yuck. For our lunch my husband and I split a cheeseburger and the spicy chicken salad. The spicy chicken salad was literally wilted pieces of lettuce that appeared to be from a "salad in a bag" they picked up from the supermarket, topped with dry non-spicy chicken. In other words- it was gross!! Don't get the salad!! The cheeseburger was surprisingly good and cooked to order. I would definitely recommend the burger! Upon ordering it took only about 10 minutes for our food to come out, so it was extremely speedy at the time. After lunch we decided to order a second round of cocktails and the iPad froze upon ordering which seemed to happened to numerous people as well at that time. Another fail!! Get rid of those iPads and just let the bartender take orders- it's FASTER!! And it's an airport!! People don't have all day to just lounge around and wait for food/drinks. Luckily the bartender felt bad the iPads had froze and comped us (and various other customers) our next round of drinks. Also, I can't even imagine how dirty those iPads are cause I did not see anyone clean them between each customer. Yuck!!! You don't talk to me, you don't take my order and you don't check in on me at all, you don't get 20% for opening a bottle and bullshitting with your friends behind the bar. I ordered the mushroom pizza, it took 45 minutes to come out (which is a huge negative if you are in an airport and have to catch a flight) While it tasted kind of ok, the crust was literally translucent and fell apart, it was mush, obviously made on the fly. For a $7.10 beer, $14 pizza, absolutely zero service I would rather go to the fast food joints where at least you can talk to another human being. I am here Sunday morning with Andresa, Shaniqua and Shayla as my bartenders...not only are they beautiful but they are kind and graceful. I have seen so many people be rude to them for reasons out of their control (aka the kitchen taking to long to bring peoples food) and they handled it with such grace and class...they really have this hospitality thing down packed, I don't I could deal with angsty, rude city people at 8 in the morning but they make it look like artwork. I am so glad I ordered these two manhattans on the rocks...these ladies killed it! She was disciplining the staff for leaving a few plates on a table loud enough to hear over my noise cancelling headphones going "that. I don't like that. I don't do that. Don't do that again..." Located in the United Airline terminal, Proof is an establishment that with just a few tweeks could be a very good spot. My spouse and I stopped here for breakfast on our way back to the west coast. After being seated we noticed that to order food, one had to use an Ipad. Now, Proof isn't the only place that does this. I encountered this in Minneapolis and find it very novel. Perhaps even more novel is that you can pay with airline points! Not a bad idea, unless of course the price of food is out of sync with the cost of your points! Let the buyer beware! And let the buyer beware too of those Ipads! The first one I tried did not work...nor the second one...and the third one on the table had major issues as well. In fact, it took a waitress 10 minutes to get ours working! She could have taken our order and the meal would be mostly cooked by the time she was finished! Consider this important, Proof: If you're going to have technology as your interface (most especially in an airport where time can be crucial) make sure it works! Hate the ordering system. Wanted a beer while I was figuring out what to eat. Asked the barman if I could get the beer I ordered while I was deciding and the answer was "no". It then snuck in a tip on the bill that I wasn't aware of until my receipt was emailed. What am I tipping? An ordering system I don't like? I thought tipping was based on service. I've been to proof multiple times as i am a strong believer that you can't fully judge a restaurant on one experience but it's very clear that you can take Proof for its full face value. I've sampled breakfast and dinner and while the lox bagel was a wonderful start to my day the droopy burger I had was a terrible end to another. On my last visit the pear and steak salad didn't come with any pear the first time and the Bloody Mary was easily seen as poured from a cheap pre made mix. While I've given Proof two stars it's fully because of their surprisingly decent whisky and bourbon selection! Although, be prepared to pay upwards of $18 a glass for any thing decent. To jump right to it, the reason for my 1 star review is undoubtedly the service I was provided at my last visit. I travel frequently for work and Newark is an airport I have spent quite a bit of time at. Since I usually fly United, I leave out of terminal C and eat at the Proof Whiskey Bar restaurant nearly every time. This past time I was at Proof Whiskey, my coworker and I were treated very rudely by a server/table bus guy. We noticed he kept coming to our table asking if we were ordering food or if we were finished with our drinks (we had 3 hours before departure and our flight was delayed, so we were taking our time, but we were ordering drinks.)He came by to just our table multiple times asking if we needed anything and if we were going to order more food. When he wasn't at our table, he was giving us dirty looks. Finally, we were getting ready to leave, and he came over and asked us what time our flight was taking off, to which my coworker replied "I know you want us to leave, we're getting up now." Luckily, she answered before I did because I was not planning on being as nice. Yes, food is expensive, but it's "restaurant" quality and you're at an airport so for the convenience and type of food, you're going to pay a little more. My issue is expecting an 18% gratuity when literally the only think the waiters/waitresses do is bring your food. You order everything on iPads, there's not really any service going on besides running food. With that being said, if I'm going to pay $19 for half of a glass of wine, I expect to be able to enjoy it at my leisure and not be rushed. I do not anticipate spending my money at this establishment in the future. read more

This was my 5th or 6th experience with the self-serve iPads that have begun to take over EWR, and I have to say it was my best experience thus far. It seems this place has a couple of different locations; to clarify, I sat at one of the "island bars" in the middle of the terminal; not in the "restaurant" off to the side. I was able to get a seat at the bar immediately at 7:15am on a Wednesday, and quickly put my order through. Being a former waitress and always being cognizant of tipping, I forgot the tip was automatically added and didn't even realize it was until after I put my payment through. I really wish they would at least enable a pop-up window for the tipping, and preferably, after you're done with your meal (have everyone on a tab instead of having to pay before your order goes to the kitchen). The bartender was very pleasant and attentive. I quickly had my coffee, and even though I selected "no milk" on the iPad, he asked if I needed any anyway. My food came out very quickly, and he immediately came to check on me and asked if I wanted salt, pepper or hot sauce (the food was delivered with a small bottle of ketchup). I asked for all three, and he gave me my choice of Tabasco or sriracha, which was nice. The food was just ok. I would have appreciated a little more bacon and tomato in my $15 bacon and tomato omelette. Both ingredients were used sparingly. The potatoes on the side were a bit lacking; clearly having sat for a while and some crispy, some mushy. During my meal, the bartender dropped off a complimentary individually wrapped chocolate covered cookie, a very nice touch and a snack I can take on the plane. The ambiance overall is pretty nice; pleasant music playing from above and nice decor. The three TVs above the bar would have served me better if the closed captioning was on, though. Overall, I'll be back the next time I'm flying for business. read more

I'm quite pleased because my flight was just delayed by 4 hours (yes I'm about to murder someone) and this place is much cleaner than the gate they have all of us waiting at (aka a disgusting construction zone). I kinda like the ordering system. The idea is that you don't have to wait on your bill if you're in a rush! And it was pretty intuitive so although I did need a 1 minute tutorial, I could've definitely figured it out on my own. And my wine was almost reasonably priced. And it's yummy. The server was nice.
