I got the catfish special, which was a fried filet of catfish on top of a Cheesy grit cake, submerged in a tomato based Cajun inspired stew. Super delicious with a little spice. Excellent Southern food without twists or "takes" on it. I had the beef medallion special with mushroom sauce. The beef was the epitome of tender and the sauce was soul-satisfying. The braised cabbage was so savory and hearty - every other cabbage dish needs to up their game. And the glazed carrots were the right combination of sweet and earthy. My wife had the fried chicken (which was juicy with a great buttermilk crispy breading) with collards (A+) and mac & cheese (A++). Whether or not you save room for dessert, get the buttermilk fig chess pie. You cannot fake a homemade crust, and theirs is top notch. It is 100% nom noms for your face. The outdoor patio is a perfect dinner spot for a cool-temp Boone evening, and the staff was comfy-friendly and very helpful with local recommendations - our server steered us to Boone Saloon after our meal and we had a fantastically funky evening there, so we owe her for that! read more

Perfect meal! We started off with the hushpuppies (tip: ask for the lime jalapeño aioli). For the main course, I had the tomato pie with the collard greens and sweet potato casserole. My boyfriend had the fried chicken with the mac n' cheese and mashed potatoes. The tomato pie was a very hearty portion, and the chicken was super crispy. If you like sweet tea, you should get it. Quick and easy restaurant located in downtown Boone. They have gluten free and vegan options too. Lunch menu consisted of salads, sandwiches, meat plates, and veggies. I had the pulled pork plate with home fries and mixed greens, and it was very tasty and filling! Service was great and our drinks were filled regularly. Food came out promptly. They do not have fountain drinks or canned sodas but do offer beer and wine. The restaurant is located in a cute house behind Mellow Mushroom. Apart from the inventive specials, the cornerstone of this restaurant seems to be the "Pick a Protein and Two Sides" type of meal. I've seen everything from chicken to catfish to crabcakes and more. We started off with the homefries with cheese and gravy, delicious. I had the pulled pork along with Mac n cheese and the black eyed peas. I'm from Miami where pulled pork is a common dish and I have to say this was the best pork I've ever had. An old prison turned into a popular local restaurant. The owner, who is also the chef, changes her menu frequently to keep things interesting. EVERYTHING is made from scratch including their house-made ketchup. The restaurant has parking on the side and in the back; you can also park on King St. if there's an overflowing parking lot. The house offers front porch seating (high top tables inside a netted front porch- outdoor heating available for winter nights); there's also seating inside- the restaurant is not extremely big so make sure to come early or make a call. As an appetizer I'd HIGHLY recommend the hush puppies; hands down my favorite item on the entire menu. For dinner I ordered the fried chicken entree which comes with two sides and a choice of either a biscuit or cornbread. Delicious! Wednesday is half price wine night and their list is really nice, a great variety and all at a good price point to begin with. This was our first visit so we opted for the traditional favorites. Hot chicken, fried catfish, Mac & cheese, pickled beets, collards, corn bread and biscuit...seriously everything was so tasty. Textures, temperatures, flavors were all spot on. Had a crisp Sauv Blanc to counteract all the yummy fatty fried goodness. The building is historic and quaint, we ate on the porch area and in warmer weather (seriously beginning to doubt Boone ever actually has this) the front yard looked nice for al fresco dining. One of our friends said he wasn't ordering dessert as it would probably be another 45 minutes. We were told the wait would be 15--20 minutes and they called us to our table in 10.
