I would have given 5 stars, but the Sauerbraten was not as good, as I was hoping for. The meat was not as tender as a Sauerbraten usually is. I generally do not eat potato pancakes, but I loved them. I could have made a dinner of the potato pancakes. The lentil soup was delicious. The apple strudel was superb. The atmosphere of the restaurant is casual & comfortable. Great spot for a beer! No Budweiser here, don't ask. If you are looking for sub-par beer, go to the corner. This place has the best german beer selection around. German food is excellent as well! No German potato salad or krainerwurst, but the brats, pretzels, potato pancakes, and spetzel are out of this world!!! Also check out their special beer dinners. Once a month Executive Chef Dave gets together with a brewery and does an amazing tasting menu paired to the different beers. Soccer fan? This is also the place to be! We came here for my birthday. My cousin wanted to try somewhere different so he chose Prost. We knew we had a bunch of people coming and we were set up at a picnic table which was perfect (and common in beer gardens). Out table quickly filled up and they added a small table on the end. We were all set. The food was good. We only had appetizers. And beer. Lots of Hofbrau. It was an enjoyable time and I'll be going back. The only thing that dismayed me a bit was getting a check before we were ready. We paid. Some left, but we weren't done. We got some more beer and desert, then left. read more

The food was good and I would be back if not for the terrible service. I have actually only had one other server in my life that was this subpar. The waitress serving at 7-8pm on Thurs 5/17/18 with the blond hair and side braid was the worst! As soon as I sat down - without greeting me, she put her hand on her hip and said "So.... do you know what you're drinking or not?" Which i thought was rude but ordered and continued on with my night. She then proceeded to forget to bring us our extra mustard (by the time she remembered, the pretzel was finished), brought my goulash with pasta rather than the spaetzle that I ordered (and it came back so late, I had forgotten I ordered it), brought another table's wrong order to ours, brought us bbq pig wings when we asked for buffalo pig wings and kept clearing our table and leaving the dirty dishes on the table next to us instead of taking them back to the kitchen? Such a bizarre experience. For the record the restaurant had maybe 3 tables of customers and there was at least 1 other server that I could see. All the while making these mistakes, she never once apologized or tried to explain. While we couldn't bring ourselves to leave less than a 15% tip because we know that servers make below minimum wage (and it shouldn't be the customer's job to subsidize their wages btw!), she then proceeded to bring us back our open bill and demand to know if that was all the tip she was getting. I really could not believe the brazen gall and rudeness of this server. She needs to be retrained or let go because this place is going to lose every single customer she waits on. Where was management when this abysmal treatment of their customers was going on?? read more

Very dissapointing! Went last night - had drinks and our salad- waited and waited- people next to us ate and had check that came after us. We were very excited about having a German restaurant in the nearby area, rather than having to travel over 30 minutes away for authentic food. But....that said, this was not authentic German food. It was good, but who told the chef that Sauerbraten is served with mashed potatoes and carrots? Not a German, that's for sure. When we ordered the Sauerbraten we asked the waitress if she could substitute dumplings and red cabbage. She said she would try. The dish was served as requested, and it was pretty good. The meat and gravy were tasty, as was the cabbage. The other meal ordered was Jaegershnitzel. It was served with Spaetzle and carrots. The Spaetzle were undercooked and mealy. They did not look or taste like Spaetzle at all. They were inedible. The Schnitzel and mushroom gravy were very good. By the way, they do not have Sauerbraten on their "German" menu. If anything is recognized as a German food, it is Sauerbraten. It should be served EVERY day. They had it as a lunch special on a Tuesday! The service was appalling! We sat at the table for 12 minutes before a waitress appeared, and there was only one other table with guests! She took our beer order, Sparten Oktoberfest, which was delicious! Of course, it took forever for it to come to the table, and it's not like the bar area was busy. There was no one there - not even a bartender! There was nothing on the table except sugar packets! No water, no bread, no anything. Finally, we hailed the waitress over as she was walking by (to where, we had no idea) and asked if we could have some bread. She said she would find some. Find some? In a restaurant? Finally she brought some of what we determined were onion rolls to the table. Traditionally, pretzel rolls are served in a German restaurant. She took our order and we waited another 25 minutes for it to come out. We felt we had to try a dessert to round out our German meal and went for the apple strudel. One of the guests at our table compared it to a toaster pop tart. It was not a flaky pastry at least 2" high and stuffed with apples. What we received were two 1" wide cakey pastries about 1/4" high with apples. Please don't call that strudel! We spent over an hour and a half in this restaurant for lunch, which was way too long. The service was poor. The food, while tasty, cannot really be considered German fare and the menu is extremely limited. It has only a very few German entrees, if you discount the wursts. The decor did not scream "old world." It is very modern, with pictures of German landscape and sculpture on the walls. Those are very nice. Perhaps they are trying to entice the younger executives to the restaurant, and not remembering that there is a lot of adult and family housing in the area. Also, the music being played was contemporary. No German music was played while we were there. This restaurant wants to be a German restaurant, but it is just a local restaurant with a few German entrees on the menu. We will not return or recommend it. It's worth the 30 minute drive to get to an authentic German restaurant for the food and ambiance. Perhaps the owners should do the same to soak in some knowledge about what is on a German restaurant menu, and take a look at the décor. They might also want to investigate a German chef who knows that kartoffelkloesse (potato dumplings) and red cabbage are served with Sauerbraten. read more

This is one of my favorites in the Garden City area. I enjoy the good selection of German beers that they have on tap, and I would highly recommend the Weihenstephaner Vitus, a weizenbach. In addition, they have a pretty good food menu and the atmosphere is great. During the summer, have a seat outside and enjoy the weather! read more

What a hidden gem..we went to this classic beer garden style gastropub for lunch and fell in love. The beer selection makes you feel like your in the Rhineland and the sausages and dogs are delicious. Do yourself a favor and get a German potato pancake. Well worth it. The service was great, it seems most of these are a little outdated. I asked the server when they opened and half of these are from before their grand opening. Training maybe? But anyways, the service was great, the food was amazing. I got the Jagerschnitzel, it was a little sour, but it was cooked great. The spaetzle and cheese is a meal within itself and although the menu is a little pricey, it is Garden City, and for the portion size they give you, it's more than well worth it. The owner came over and made sure everything was alright, we got to talking and he even had me try my new favorite beer! Absolutely perfect. Our server not only took the time to thoroughly explain every different type of sausage on the menu but even introduced me to new beers by asking what I usually like. She brought me 3 beer samples after I told her my current favorites and I loved 2 of those more than my current favorites. I will be back for sure. read more

This review is not all encompassing. This is the opinion of myself and others who I ate with on this one particular night. Your results may differ. I must also say that this establishment is NOT going for a truly authentic fair. They wish to blend a bit of German with a bit of American. So, with that said - on to the review: Spaetzle is not spaetzle, at least not the spaetzle where I lived in Germany. The fish was originally overcooked but, the waitress immediately brought it back and had a new plate out quickly! Potato pancakes are awesome along with the red cabbage. Carrots weren't cooked enough and as a result, they were too hard. Beer selection is great and they had my favorite, Franziskaner! Beautiful pictures of Deutschland however, my suggestion would be to make them smaller and add many others. Krugs (the old fashioned mugs with metal flip-tops) are plenty and a nice touch! Having tap and bottle of the German beers are great. Didnt try the german potato salad. Tables and benches are nice - I feel like i am in a true German Oktoberfest zelt (tent). HB (Hofbrau)glasses also very nice. The wait staff should be commended as they were all very friendly. The management is also friendly and knowledgeable. The dirndl's (old-fashioned dresses worn by the female staff) are cute. The bread needs to be brought out hotter as it cools quickly and hardens fast. Place the butter in the basket with the bread so it is soft enough to spread when it gets to the table. The cordon bleau was impeccably cooked. Liverwurst (THE BEST liverwurst I have ever tasted!) and entire appetizer of cheeses and "pepperoni" (it was salami but, in Germany, the word for salami is pepperoni) was great. Brat was cooked well but way over-priced. Crepes too dry. Apple strudel - fantasmo! Ice cream was amaaaashing! Kayla is to be recommended. Or Mary! Jonathan is a great bartender and will satisfy any palette. The bathrooms: nice, clean, small but, space is limited. Dryers are loud but hey, its a small bathroom. They are Excellerators! Synopsis: This is a great new place that deserves the attention of anyone looking for a new hot-spot in Garden City. You will not be dissappointed by the varied selection of Bier. Although the majority of the menu is over-priced, forget the complaining for one night, put it all on the credit card and let Prost put a smile on your face! Chef Dave'sBeer dinner on July 23 was a gastronomic fiest.Before Dave brought out each course he described how it was prepared.The taste of the mussels was even better than the description.The tuna poke tasted like Dave had just caught the Tuna before he prepared it .The Fish and Chips made you feel like you were in an English pub.Each course was paired with a delicious German beer .All this for just $40 a person.Best bargain on Long Island.Do yourself a favor and go to Chef Dave's beer dinner in August.Date not yet determined read more

Service was slow, even though it was not busy. The waitress took so long to bring me my drink, that when she finial bring it out she apologized but said to make it up I have 2 for you. My husband and I went there yesterday for the first time. The best thing about the place, which by the way, the atmosphere was very nice, was the beer. The wiener schnitzel was burnt (black) on the bottom and very greasy. No breadcrumbs on it at all. The second one made was not burnt, but still very oily looking. The dumplings were 2 balls of mashed potatoes. I had the 3 sausages which were good, but with french fries, who ever heard of that in a German restaurant?? The waitress was lovely and very pleasant!!
