Anyway, we're glad we got in here for an early bird dinner with our three kiddos (and no wait either!) I have to say the wurst platter and jagerschnitzel entrees were both solid, and we added in a tasty bowl of flavorful French onion soup, huge Bavarian pretzel and a couple of potato pancakes to the mix. Sad to hear Oak Chalet is closing their doors just after New Year's so we stopped by for one final meal while we were out on Long Island last weekend! Food and service did not disappoint and the restaurant was well-decorated for Christmas too :) Yes, meals are a bit on the pricier side but portions are generous and (as someone who LOVES German food), I have to say the jagerschnitzel and sauerbraten were spot on! We started off with the obligatory Bavarian pretzel, which is cooked to order and easy to share around for a family of four. We also ordered a bowl of their onion soup which had a surprisingly flavorful broth and was delicious down to the very last scoop. It was a nice departure from some variants where once you pierce through the top cheese layer, you're eating boring beef broth. I wish the family well (believe they're retiring and trying to sell the business) and maybe keep my fingers crossed new owners will keep up the German cuisine! read more

Made reservations on a whim with my in laws and we were beyond pleased. I grew up near a small German restaurant that sadly I live too far from now.. but Oak Chalet was absolutely everything I've been missing and then some. The decor and ambiance was perfect - like a time warp with just the right amount of "modern" tied in. The food was authentic and fresh- we still talk about the freshness of the pretzel and how perfectly cooked the meats and potato pancakes were. Very over priced and very under-good. Chicken jagerschnitzel was just 2 chicken cutlets with bland mushroom gravy, oily potato pancakes and a couple sad veggies for $35. I ordered a house salad with blue cheese that was a plate of iceberg lettuce and 2 slices of tomato for $12. The bratwurst appetizer was a single brat and a scoop of sauerkraut for $13. A cup of chocolate pudding is $12, too. Service was fine, but slow. It took over an hour from ordering to eating. The outside is very pretty, the inside could use some updating. Overall, after tax and tip, $325 for 4 people for very subpar food. I wouldn't go back. read more

Satisfying German experience. Craving an Octoberfest Feast, the family and I ventured to Oak Chalet, a quaint family operation that served above average German food. Decor was superb and ambiance supported, while live music created an immense atmosphere. Bier on draft was perfect while the giant pretzel to start hit the spot. So happy to have a little German place like this locally. Been in Bellmore for about 3 years now and have run past Oak Chalet a few times. Finally visited last night and was blown away by the atmosphere, service, food and everything in between. We had a reservation, and would highly recommend as the place is busy. The ambiance reminds me of my grandparents house. We had some potato pancakes, spaetzel and the pretzel for apps, which were all incredible. Might have been the best soft pretzel I've ever had. For dinner, I ordered the Jaegerschnitzel and was so impressed by both taste and presentation. Wife ordered the breaded chicken cutlet and loved it. This restaurant is hidden gem. It is smack dab in the middle of a residential neighborhood. Parking was ok. We had reservations for 5 at 6PM on Father's Day and were seated immediately. The place was packed and very busy. Our waiter was very attentive and professional. Since this place was known for its German cuisine, all of us ordered German dishes. I ordered the Schlacht Platte with sauerkraut (pork chop with weinerschnitzel and bratwurst). Pork chop was very tasty and juicy. Weinerschnitzel and bratwurst were good. Chicken Jaegerschnitzel was delicious. Frikadelle (German style meatloaf with ground veal, beef and pork) with mushroom gravy was very good. Kessler Rippchen (2 pork chops) was delicious and juicy. Weinerschnitzel Holstein (vealina cutlet) was delicious. All came with potatoe pancakes, which was a nice compliment to the meal. There were only a few beers on tap. Tried the Hofbrau Original, very refreshing. The food took about 30 minutes. There was no bread to knosh on. So if you come here hungry remember to order appetizers. I was very disappointed that I couldn't get a table just for my self not thinking I would need reservations which I never did of all the yrs I been going there and the girl who works there was very nasty and was making people leave with out reservations which wasn't right ! I had the Wienerschnitzel when I was in Austria I was curious how it would compare this restaurants Wienerschnitzel I was pleasantly surprised it was very similar very tender not deep fried like I had in other German American restaurants. I was in the mood for German food because of all the Oktoberfest ads I have been seeing EVERYWHERE, and since I'm now a long islander via queens, I had to find a new German spot closer to home. The oak chalet in bellmore is in a residential area and has super cute curb appeal with a good amount of parking. When you walk inside you feel like you are in a german bar, and the staff is very accommodating and nice. I had a hofbrau beer and my hubby did the mixed beer (light and dark). We skipped apps because we knew the entrees would be huge. For dinner I got the goulash with spaetzle which was a generous portion. I enjoyed the meal, but be forewarned- it's a lot of meat. My hubby got the jagerschnitzel which was fantastic and came with a side of red cabbage (amazing) and potato pancakes. The potato pancakes also came with a side of applesauce that was awesome. Amazing German food and great service! The outdoor seating is great! It's under a tent with nice lighting, decorations and music. And even though you are seated outside the service is nothing less than exceptional. our water was constantly being refilled and the food was brought out quickly. I ordered the goulash with spaetzle. The spaetzle comes out plain but when it's mixed with the sauce from the goulash it's super good. Overall it was a great experience with authentic German food. The Oak Chalet has consistently provided authentic German food, beer and atmosphere since i moved to my house 30 years ago ! Although the restaurant is a good size , the atmosphere is cozy with warm lighting and inviting chairs ! This family run business has been generous to the school and community . My favorite is the Sauerbraten red cabbage and dumplings . Richly marinated and spiced , always tender . Potato dumplings are the perfect texture , consistency and taste . Growing up nearby, I must've driven past this cute little place over 100 times and I always wondered what it was... like 25 years later I FINALLY checked it out and let me tell you, it's awesome. Inside, this place looks like it's right out of old Germany. Wood everywhere, steins and other decorative memorabilia on the walls, really nice atmosphere. The outside area looked nice too with umbrellas and what looked like a bar, so I imagine evenings out here are nice too. When it comes to the food, yes. Just yes. We took a drive today to oak chalet in Bellmore. I think over the years we tried almost every german restaurant in the area. So the oak was on of the missing ones. We started of with the pretzel wich was really good. For Main course we had the sauerbraten and Schnitzel Holstein. The kids sausage and Spätzle. Everything was taste less and not even close to any kind of german cusine. It really taste like hospital or retirement food ... how that taste ? Like nothing taste less ... They charged $10 for a small riesling glass and $9 for beers prices like manhattan on long Island. If you can dont waste your time and money go there nothing good when it comes down to food and german beer you can get now in any good restaurant or Bar. I went here last night for a birthday dinner and the service was great. I always live the atmosphere it feels like being back in Germany. Loved the onion soup, but the best was the Black Forest cake. My mom was German and that was her favorite cake, so I know the traditional way it's supposed to be made. They made it perfectly. It's a big deal because you can't find real traditional black Forrest cake anymore. You can find Americanized devil food cake versions that are a poor imitation, but they have the real thing!!! First off, after placing our order they never brought bread to the table. There was not salt or pepper shakers on any of the tables. I ordered the sauerbraten. It came with a mushy potato ball that had no flavor and the worst red cabbage I've ever tasted. The meat itself was just ok, as was the gravy. My wife and I had a night without the kids so we needed to take advantage. We had been wanting to try Oak Chalet for a long time and this was our chance. Decor is reminiscent of a beer hall minus the long tables and benches. Heavy wooden tables and sturdy wooden chairs. Numerous beer steins and traditional pictures on the walls. We started with the hot pretzel which came with 3 dipping sauces (cheese, German mustard and honey mustard). It was delicious. Piping hot, right amount of salt, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. From there, I ordered the Jaegerschnitzel with potato pancakes. My wife got some apps and sides for her meal. She ordered the Kaese Spaetzle, herring in wine sauce and red cabbage. We also ordered the fried onions. The Jaegerschnitzel was nice and crunchy, seasoned perfectly and covered in a delicious mushroom brown sauce. The spaetzle was covered in cheese and cooked perfectly. Red cabbage was tart and sweet and exactly as it should be. I enjoyed the herring. My wife commented that she had never seen such large fillets of herring. Although we heard nothing but incredible things about the apple strudel, we had no more room. That will have to be on our next trip. read more

If you're looking for a great dining experience this family owned and operated restaurant is a fantastic choice. The inside of the restaurant brings you back to simpler times with a very nostalgic design and a look that makes you feel right at home. The menu has all the classic German dishes and the staff is very happy to walk you through the dishes and make suggestions. If German isn't your thing then they have burgers and sandwiches too. Their Bavarian pretzel is amazing and served with 3 dipping sauces. They have some stellar sausages and their fried pork chop is a taste of heaven - a ham lovers dream come true! Meatloaf w mushroom gravy was moist and delicious. Potato pancakes were loved by all of us and served with a nice big bowl of apple sauce. The cocktails were made perfectly and the staff was quick with the next round. Portions are large so expect to come home with leftovers. The fact that Oak Chalet is a short walk from our home is the final bonus. Glad we stopped in and we will be back again soon. The employees from owners to servers were extremely pleasant and quite courteous giving a lot of recommendations on the menu. The atmosphere was like being in Germany. Beautiful restaurant. I went with the sauerbraten with red cabbage potato dumpling and a salad. Absolutely delicious. Next time I go back I'm going with the jaegerschnitzel in the brown gravy. I love Isk Chalet.
