We called to get ahead to make a reservation for lunch, but the woman who answered didn't mention there was absolutely no parking because of a car show that closed off the street. When we finally found parking and walked to the restaurant we were seated in a booth, and largely ignored because the waitress was busy in another section of the restaurant. The Wienerschnitzel was OK but the pricing was ridiculous. The menu had a price of $27, but when the check came, it was $33 and they actually charged $1.80 extra for the mushroom sauce that they suggested! My sister ordered a side of french fries that were nine dollars! With tip meal came to $130. We won't be returning. read more

Continued wrong food at take out is one thing, but changing hours constantly without changing your website is just rude, and inconviences potential customers. Went with a group of seniors at 1:15pm the other day and yes they are closed with a sign on the door that says open 2pm. Your website says noon. Reservation for 11, was seated immediately. Great (loud) vibes even on a Sunday evening. Live music, fun decor, surprisingly large menu. I'm of a split mind on the food; for example, I got the weinerschnitzel, a fairly basic choice. It was the last plate out for 11 people, and it was very bland, but the veal was cooked perfectly and was crisp. I've had this dish in other restaurants, other states, and other countries. The veg had no seasoning either. Overall, was good but not great. Would absolutely return for the vibes. read more

Makes me sad to write this, but my once favorite German, this place spot seems to have fallen victim to the high costs and overall changes in the industry. I can't place my finger in it, but our favorite dishes just didn't seem what they once were. Also, at one time every meal came with the house salad. This is the one thing I look forward to the most when coming here. If I would've known this, I would have ordered completely differently. I also have to say, it's still fairly off putting when it's urged to make a reservation when it's 4:30pm and the restaurant is fairly empty. We came on a whim because we love this restaurant. This is not to say the food is not good. It's still tasty, and the portions are very large. The one major complaint I have was our stuffed pretzels were very burnt. The pretzels that came out prior to our apps and meals were much better. They also did not have my favorite German chocolate cake. Not sure if they were out, or they don't feature it anymore, but this was so disappointing. Their cake is my absolute fav and Hubs got a whole one for me for my birthday one year. At least I hope it still is my favorite. With the bakery gone, I'm not sure if they are still making their cakes in house. It was actually our first time sitting in the area that was once their bakery. They did a great job of making this part of the restaurant cohesive with the original space. Still feels like we went to the old country for a bit. Our service was great although be prepared to wait a while for your food. It's made to order. Came back to the lindenhurst area to see A show so we had to stop by the Village Lantern because I wanted to get the Stuffed Cabbage w schnitzel. Come to find out, it isn't on the menu anymore! Big dissapointment. So I got the pounded veal crusted and fried with the schnitzel. My partner got the Meatballs with the egg noodles and gravy. The Meatballs were our least favorite. I love German food, and had been to the Village Lanterne once before, for my birthday dinner in 2013, and really enjoyed it, but for whatever reason hadn't gotten back there. Our fencing club recently had a club lunch at the Village Lanterne's beer garden so I got to try them out again. I noticed they offered a special platter called "The Schwab," which included sauerbraten, jägerschnitzel, weisswurst, spaetzle and red cabbage. Now, before I was born, my German grandparents used to teasingly call each other "Schwab" (my late grandpa Ludwig actually was a Swabian from Oberstdorf), so of course I had to order this, and it was grand. I didn't need to eat any dinner! Also shared some fine potato pancakes with a clubmate. Washed it down with a lovely liter of Hofbräu hefeweizen. The biergarten is pretty (though make sure you get one of the shaded tables), and the service was friendly. read more

Decided on German food fare and we gave the Village Lanterne a go and we were not disappointed. Unassuming on the outside one would think they stepped into a German beer hall in Bavaria. The decorum sets the mood for some of the best served German style food. We were warmly welcomed by the manager Christine and immediately seated. There's a nice selection of German beers along with a more traditional wine offering to start off with. Restaurant offers the traditional menu along with a daily lunch menu with a large selection of traditional German food fare. Started off either the potato dumpling soup which was good although not extremely hot which would have been better on this rainy cold day. The sauerbraten dish, served with red cabbage and spaetzle, was well portioned and delicious which I'd highly recommend. The Wienerschnitzel dish again served with red cabbage and spaetzle was very good. Unfortunately times have changed and you no longer get the small salad but still great dishes. Passed on dessert except for a round of coffees. Disappointed that the old bakery is gone as the restaurant expanded their presence into that space but thankfully the decorum has been carried through into the expanded space. Overall a great place offering great German food and beer. Street parking is limited but there are designated parking lots off Wellwood as well as neighborhood parking. read more

The most amazing German food you will ever find! Had the Weinersnitchel and it was delicious! The place looks amazing and the service was excellent. I took off one star because after one hour and forty five minutes we were asked to leave. We were a party of 6 that gets together just a few times a year so that was disappointing. I understand they had the 6 pm reservation coming in, but I was never asked to leave a restaurant before. Another thing I didn't appreciate was they don't allow you to switch from a mixed vegetable side to a mashed potato. They force you to order a side. Such a beautifully decorated and festive interior. Beautiful ambiance. Waitstaff dresses in Bavarian dress. Lots of booths and separate little dining areas for small gatherings/ parties. Really nicely arranged. Food was well made but be mindful that almost everything has meat in it! We knew that going in, but not to this extent! We don't eat meat, and so you might say, why the heck did you go to a German restaurant, and you might be right! But they had three fish dishes and salads etc. the encrusted salmon was delicious served with mashed potatoes and mixed veggies. The mashed potatoes had bacon in it , which the staff had not mentioned. We really threw the waitress off kilter, although she was always pleasant and helpful! The stuffed pretzel had meat in it . Fortunately the chocolate cake did NOT have meat in it. In conclusion, it is a fun , festive , friendly place, with live music- playing contemporary and folk music. There is a beer garten in the back but closed in cold weather . So there are vegetarian options but unfortunately you will Need to ask questions about whether there is meat in it. Second time there. Once for dinner, once for a holiday party. I tried a few things, the food was ok except for the Sauerbraten and Spaetzle which were excellent. We moved to Florida 2 years and found a couple of decent German restaurants. We were up in NY for the week and decided to revisit our favorite German restaurant on Long Island. Well, as usual, everything was on point. The jager schnitzel was awesome, love the gravy, the spetzle was awesome, red cabbage deelish. Atmosphere and ambience great as always. We had an errand to run in Lindenhurst last Thursday, and remembered how much we enjoyed our last visit at the Village Lantern. We didn't have reservations for lunch, but no worries there were tables available. We were a party of three, and we were seated quickly by a young hostess. I gave her 4 German plates to further the restaurant 's decorations. We are downsizing. The service was good, even though there were only 2 waitresses and a large group had arrived without reservations. Don't know how they did it. I had the Prime rib tidbits on a pretzel roll, which was really enough for 2. Had the leftovers the next day. The liverwurst sandwich was a bit too plain. The German potato salad was delicious. We came around 8:30 on a Friday night and the restaurant was packed. The inside of the restaurant is decorated with German-themed everything, including art, steins, coo coo clocks, and more. The waitresses wore drindl dresses. I ordered gewurztraminer wine. Service was generally slow but the waitress shared they were short staffed in the kitchen. The basket of bread had 1 warm roll and the rest were cold. The Schwab platter was a lot of food! It came with sausage, schnitzel, sauerbraten, spaetzel and red cabbage. Both the sauerbraten and schnitzel were very good! The speatzel tasted homemade but was just OK. Really interesting decor with lots of steins and hunting decorations. Has a rural hunting lodge feel. We were seated and waited on right away. The table next to us was complaining about how long it took for their food to come but I didn't think it was much of a wait for ours. Had the cordon bleu and substituted spatzle for fries. Acoustic band playing and the sound level was acceptable and appreciated. The dining room started to fill yet the noise level again was pleasing. There is bar seating and you can dine there as well. My husband and my 2 kids and I visited Village Lanterne last night for my birthday dinner. Our 1st time there and we will never go back. Food was horrible. Not one of us finished our meals. 2 of us had the sauerbraten, which was not good, dumplings were dough balls and tasteless. Gravy bland. 1 had the german meatballs with noodles, couldn't even eat the meatballs, and 1 had jagerschnitzel, which was not good either. Waited a long time for terrible food.
