We used to love Proto's. But after $140 spent on 5 pizzas for two families, we probably won't be going back. They gave us a completely different pizza than we ordered and on top of that, the crust was super stiff, almost no cheese, and everything tasted very bland. We used to love the Gunbarrel location, but this one was so far off from expectations that will probably go to Jimano's across the street from now on. Sad. read more

I cannot believe how bad this was. I ordered five pizzas, picked them up, took them home, and they were awful. Inedible. We would have gotten more enjoyment eating the box. This place was dead on a Saturday at 2pm. Maybe because the sign saying "Proto's Pizza" is covered by overgrown trees. We normally go to the Broomfield location but we recently moved and this was closer so thought we would give it a try. The pizza was ok, we did a half back but the overall ambience compared to Broomfield was like night and day. Won't be back, such a weird area. read more

This place needs more reviews. What a hidden gem. I had heard from a friend it was good and they were right. Tasty pizza, friendly service, and lots of options. The pizza was great and my 3 small kids finished off a large. They have a hot infused oil that you can put on as well, super tasty. They had a special just for this past week too, strawberry cannolis in a chocolate shell. So good, very different from the original. Overall, I'd like to go back and try their limoncello margaritas or other drinks. They even had a TV for games. Good stuff for sure. read more

I ordered a pie for pickup and was thoroughly disappointed in the food quality. The crust was so thin and crunchy, like a cracker. It was burnt in parts. The sauce was bland. The topping was sparse. For years Proto's was our go-to pizza restaurant, always spot on! We stopped going a few years ago as the prices went up and quality went down. A few days ago we decided to give it another go. Shared a $12 salad, a $31.00 large Proto Pie with added prosciutto and mushrooms and two $6 Pironi beers. Pizza was fair but the crust was tough. When we got the $62 tab I noticed a $2.19 "Staff Benefits Charge" charge tacked on! This pissed me off and deducted the amount from my normal 20% tip. $70.00 pizza meal even in this crazy economy is just plain nuts! Sorry Proto's there'll soon be competition coming to the neighborhood that will put you in your place. read more

We love Proto's Pizza! In "regular" times we'd alternate between ordering take out and eating in the dining room or on the patio. With the COVID restrictions they have curb side pick up take out and it is awesome! Order via phone, pay via phone, drive up and viola - your pizza comes out to you! They have beer and wine for sale too (although we didn't order that). Our faves are the traditional, Proto Pie and Traffic Jam! Highly recommend! read more

We love Proto's pizza and usually go to the Bromfield location. It was getting late so went to this location becuase it is open until 8:30. We walked in at 7:55 and they were already closing down, emptying trash, etc. Was told we had to sit near the door at a table for 4 even though there were 5 of us. It was pretty clear that at 8:30 they would be hustling us out so we didn't stay. I asked why the rush and was told something about "labor" and how they had to get out on time. Nono, the manager is amazing. So kind, thoughtful, often remembers orders/usuals, needs and customization. Pizza is delicious, more authentic Italian than most. Their pizza sauce is delicious, light. Staff is always warm and welcoming (which has become a rare thing in the restaurant industry in CO), the pizza is my family's favorite, and it feels good to support a local business. My husband used to live in Europe and says the pizza and the hospitality are as good as in Italy. Their chocolate-covered cannoli is amazing, too. We are new to the area, and this was our first time trying Proto's. The pizza was good. A nice thin crust, cooked just right. Unfortunately, even though the person who took our order on the phone warned us that they were busy and it would take about 45 minutes, it actually took about an hour and 15 minutes. And by the time we got our pizza, it was luke warm. I suspect that it had been done for a while, but it got stuck in a pile somewhere while they were fulfilling other orders. Taking a full star off for having to wait an additional 30 minutes and then getting luke warm pizza. If you are dining in, I'm guessing you get a little better experience. They do have a "half-bake" option on the menu, where you can take it home and put it in the oven to finish it. Maybe I'll do that next time. And hopefully I won't have to wait as long. read more

We try to always order takeout during Covid and support Protos as its my favorite pizza. So I'm super disappointed in the experience I had tonight. I can't even believe what happened. Unfortunately we left with NO pizzas or salads we ordered. We placed a takeout order at 535pm and when we arrived around 545pm my husband went inside to pay ($77 + $20 tip) and wait the ten minutes until the order was supposed to be ready for pickup at 555pm. No big deal. He was clearly inside and waiting to pick up the pizzas and communicated such to the staff. I was waiting in the car and when I went in 20 minutes AFTER pickup time (at 615pm), they had just connected that apparently there was an error assigning the order to be ready at 655pm, not 555pm. 60 minutes Late! And 1 hour 20 minutes after ordering. And that meant the pizzas weren't even made or in the oven yet. We couldn't wait another 15 minutes at that point and I don't know if I fully heard the excuse the manager said, blaming another employee. Sorry Protos, a huge disconnect and big miss tonight. I will have to call if the $20 tip isn't refunded as well. read more

Oredred a Proto Pie(basil and sausage). Good crust,good ingredients. But,12 pieces of sausage on a large pizza. Had one piece with 1/2 a piece of sausage on it. Looked like maybe 5 basil leaves torn up on the entire pizza. $26 for the pie. Horrible value. Won't be back. read more

I have driven by this place many times so this time on a whim I thought I should give it a try. It is small little place along 287 in a mini strip mall with ample parking. They greet you with a smile and for a friday evening they weren't too busy. The service was almost to the point of hovering which is a little annoying. We ordered the spinich salad and it was good but they forgot the bacon they promised on the salad. I ordered the traffic jam pizza which is basically a meat pizza. It was okay, really nothing special and the crust was a little burned which my date liked but not me. We ordered beers with our food and split a dessert canoli and with a 15% tip the bill was almost sixty dollars. I can get pizza that is equal or better and spend a lot less than that so I won't bd returning to Protos. read more

Clam pizza, stunning seasonal salads, cold white wine and a patio. Sigh... I can't think of many pizza places that are more than great pizza and not too much of all things Italian. I love to go here with my family, by myself or with my hubby. Worth the drive to Lafayette. I am a lover of white pizza and I don't care for tons of goofy red sauce. Thankfully Proto's hits both of these marks and I can go either way and find napoleanic bliss. I have never had a dessert here but have gone and ordered extra pizza to take home after we have eaten everything on the table. If you want to take out pizza, ask for it to be lightly baked so you can just finish it at home. It is best eaten there. read more

Rarely do I give 5 stars, but Protos deserves it. We ordered the Capri salad, which is awesome and if they can nail a salad you know the rest is probably going to be pretty good. Our pizzas did not disappoint, the Atomica was delicious and the Low rider was great also. Love the small option so we can both order our own. We will be back. Proto's Pizza is one of our favorite go to local restaurants. The food is always amazing. It has a cozy, intimate atmosphere, whether it's a work lunch or date night. The only downside is that they don't deliver, but carry out service is always quick and convenient. read more

I called and spoke to a couple of different people who said they would refund my tip amount. No mention of recognizing that this was their mistake and going the extra step to retain me as a future customer (comp my meal, give me a gift card to come in for a pizza maybe?). Small and tucked behind a plaza. Currently doing some floor work so they have some dust , but I appreciated the sign to warn us. Came in for brunch with some co workers to meet and chat. My eye instantly caught eye of the lunch special. It included. A small salad, pizza, and drink for 12$. I was stoked because the pizza wood fire oven was blazing and warm inside, filled with the baked smells of dough and meats. I went for it, and the portion for $12 was truthfully not satisfying. I can get a slice of pizza larger than what was served for less. So that's the reason why I score a four. Other than that service was awesome, out server constantly greeted us with a warm smile and refilled our cups as soon as they started to run low. Value wise I was hoping for more with what I purchased if it's to be advertised. Location has doddles and fun comic scenes around the room, very casual atmosphere for meet and greets. read more

Protos is "Yuppie Pizza". If you haven't been to Protos, it is worth a try if you feel like something different, like clam pizza, alternative cheeses, and similar. However, I have to say that although I live in Lafayette, I almost never go to Protos. Once or twice per year tops, because of the value proposition. Pizzas are thin and small (not much topping, thin crust, small diameter) -- I'm not into gluttony and gigantic portions at restaurants, but if I spend $20 on a pizza it should feed two people without one of them (usually me) walking out hungry. I caution you about the photos accompanying the reviews, the pizzas look misleadingly "big" in them... The quality of ingredients is good, they seem to have a well-stocked bar, so it seems like a good date place. You could have a fun dinner here and then go out to another bar or a movie or something. This is not really a bring-a-family-for-pizza type of place, you would go broke. It is a bit small, as well. For some reason I always feel cramped in this restaurant, like the bar takes up too much room or something, I can't really explain it, but it is't cozy-comfortable. We went to Protos for the first time last night and the pizza and salad were horrible and definitely not worth the price we paid. Granted I had a gluten free crust which is never great, but it was cooked until blackened. We had three toppings on it and I guess they take that literally, one pepper, one mushroom, one pineapple a slice. The cheese was pretty much nonexistent. As for the salad, we paid 10 dollars for what they call a Caesar salad: basically a bunch of romaine with two thimbles of commercial dressing, a few large junks of parm and 3 whole anchovies. No croutons, nor was the parm grated. The lettuce had brown spots all through it, the type I throw out even at home. My boyfriend said after 28 years of living in the area it was hands down the worst pizza and salad he's ever had. Very disappointing as there's so few good pizza places as it is. read more

I ate here with my kids. I had the clam pizza with red sauce (normally I'd have done white, but I wanted to try their red given it was my first time). My kids got the plain, thin crust. First off, the food took some time to come out. Granted, it was busy, so I'll give them a pass on that one. They brought out the wrong pizza for my order. When I brought that to the server's attention, she quickly rectified the situation. So, the service wasn't stellar, but they break even because of their efforts to recover. As far as my pizza, I felt more clams could have been on top. The cheese, sauce, and crust were all meh. The sauce was especially bland IMHO. I tried the kids' plain and had the same reaction. Meh. Now, I'm a recent East Coast relo, so I guess I'm a bit biased. Let's put it this way, though. If you're going to charge East Coast prices, then don't be offended if my standards match. read more

A coworker has raved about this place for a long time. The pizza was good (I had a traditional with sausage, peppers, and onions) as was the wine. The service was friendly. I do have this thing about places that don't take the salad fork and bring a fresh dinner fork, but that's just my own crazy quirk and I'm comfortable with that. I liked that it was a little smaller. I have the tomato mozzarella salad every time I go - a large, ostensibly to share with my husband, but he gets very little. The balsamic vinegar they use with it is the best. I find the deliciously thin crispy wood-fired pizza crust especially wonderful with a white sauce base, since I love garlic. And I agree that the pizza makers put on quite a show for the kids, who even have a special area where they can sit and watch. read more

With my Chicagoland roots, I was initially of the "who wants sparse toppings on a cracker" school. However, with time and prompting from my enthusiastic family members, I've come to love the casual, friendly attentions of the staff and the wood-fired tastiness. Perhaps pizza doesn't have to mean five pounds of cheese and streams of dripping grease? (I know...it's blasphemy.) I don't know how a pizzeria can have the best marg ever given all the mexican restaurants aroun' these parts, but hands down, I love them. And being a gluten-free Faerie Princess, they have some yum gf crusts. Sauce rocks, cheese rocks, atmosphere rocks. ...So this one night it had been snowing like a mofo and the FP and I dredged it as we had felt trapped in the house and really needed to not cook. When we got to Proto's, they had just closed 15 minutes prior and we left. FP wasn't too happy about this, but he's not one to hold a grudge. We've been there a bunch and went back tonight. We ordered pizza and root beer and salad and margs and dessert. To our delight, our (awesome) server let us know that since there was some injustice the last time we were in, our dessert was on them and they even hooked us up with espresso. I really appreciate that. That they even remembered and thought to make it up to us was special. We love this place and now we love it more. read more
