On our 2018 Honda CRV, we got a dashboard message that said the battery in the key fob needed…read morereplacement. I did so and everything was fine. Then we got the message again so we changed the battery in the other fob. And that's where our problems began. After installation of the new battery, the red led light didn't blink. I went out to the car and it didn't do anything when I pressed the fob buttons. Put the old battery back in. No bueno. Our both batteries on the meter. New = 3.4 volts. Old = 2.6 volts. Neither turned on the red light. San Leandro Honda have a condescending look when we asked if the fob was covered by the 30,000 mile power train warranty. My thought? If the fob doesn't work, the power train is useless because you can't start the engine. Anyway, they said that they could try to do some diagnostics but the easiest fix would be to order a new fob and have it programmed. 24-hours and $300+. Oakland Honda said essentially the same thing. $368 for a new key, never mind that we bought the car there. The reason for the cost was the effort in programming the electronics. Please. I used to be an IT guy. You do to have to write a brand new script. You need to do some minor programming and flash the info into the fob. I did some online research and found The Key Shop. I sent a quick email to Rick and he responded that he could take a look at it. I called Rick. He texted me where I could find him in 35 minutes and we drove down. He went right to work, systematically checking everything that there was to check. He noticed that the battery was very difficult to remove. He asked if I was sure that I had used the correct battery. I showed him the battery in our other fob and he noticed that two of the plastic prongs appeared to be pressed down and could be causing the battery not to make good contact. Once he gently unbent the prongs, he reseated the battery and all was good. Total charge for his time and effort? $10. Way better than we could have hoped for. Rick, you THE MAN!

It's super stuck solid shut from the inside, and when the key's inserted outside, it just turns but does nothing. We're locked from the inside. Well, not really, we can still use the garage door. And looking at the glass half full, that's still better than being locked from the outside. I digress... I searched the all-knowing Youtube on how I could possibly McGyver my way out of my current conundrum. I decided against it as the state of the lever covered a screw, and forcing it would kill the thread on the head. Plus I had to landspeeder my way through traffic soon in order to bring my younglings to school. Next logical thing was to search the great holocron of knowledge - seek help from Yelp! I don't have any locksmith on speed dial on my comlink and was my first time having to need the services of one. Not fun. Found a good number of 'em, and quickly checked on criteria that mattered to me at the time -- a. Can take my call (early in the morning) b. Proximity to my house c. Rating d. Total number of reviews e. Reading samples of +/- reviews. d. Ability to service within the day I found one that checked all my boxes. A young-ish man answered, after I explained my situation, he started asking me questions. My name, my phone number. I felt things were being rushed. I asked for the my criteria -- how much credits do I need to shell out. After I was given a range, he then proceeded to ask me my address. At that point I wan uninterested, I told him to just call me after an hour. It was a very mechanical conversation and I how could I entrust access to my house to somebody whom I'm not even comfortable talking on the phone? Then I found Dave. Checked all the boxes. Very pleasant on the phone, good listener, gave me a reasonable quote (based on the range I've been reading). He told me he's booked for the day (another good sign for me), but told me he'd shoot for an afternoon swing-by. Oh, and he never even asked for my address at all, just my general location. Almost two hours passed his ETA, I called him again, he advised me he's still on the job in the Pen, and on to another one and asked if I'm cool at an early evening visit instead. I'm cool. When he was ready to head over, that was the only time he asked for the address. Eventually he arrived as promised. Very respectful of the place (asked if it's a shoes-or-no-shoes house), went inside and straight to the door. One thing I noticed was he never scoped the interior of the house at all. From the garage access, he just went straight to the job. I was impressed. As he worked on the door, he talked and walked me through what could have happened, what he's currently doing, and the remedy he'd take, and then some. Length of service was approrpriately prompt but didn't feel like he lightspeeded you through it. Payment was as quoted, and as I've said, very reasonable. I believe in whenever you pay peanuts, be prepared to get monkeys. He fairly charges what his work is worth. He even guaranteed his work for as long as 5 years. Wanted to pay through check, but decided to pay cash instead, he issued a receipt. He's a good communicator, a sincere one too. In the course of us discussing home security, of me possibly needing a re-keying service and him suggesting his most cost-efficient ideas, we also got to talk about hobbies, projects, of keeping sharp, the value of giving back, and about a recent local community event we apparently both attended as volunteers. He articulated his pride for his craft and the importance of trustworthiness. These are values that I subscribe to and I'm glad to hear them from Dave. Highly recommended. I will tell the Emperor that if ever a door needs opening on that grand space station in the sky, I've found the official Imperial keymaster. I honestly wish my family, friends, or every Trooper, Ewok, Jedi, or alien I know get locked-out so I can refer Dave to them. I have not only gained access to our house from the front door again, I felt like I also gained a friend.

Day of the appt texted to see if they were on their way since it was after 2pm and no one showed up, no one replied to my text either. Called and left voicemail at about 2:15pm. Waited until close to 2:45pm and no one ever showed up or returned my call or text, although my text showed delivered and read. DO NOT use this company unless you want your time wasted. Its a shame, as a local business owner I would think they would be more professional. I would have understood and appreciated a text or call that they weren't going to be able to make it. So I am the building owner and just wanted everyone to know my experience. So my tenant called Dawn…read more& the Lock for a door repair. Dawn & the Lock subcontracted to TML Mobile lock repair. The technician from TML told the tenant that there should be locks on both sides of the door and it was going to be an extra charge due to the two additional locks required. The technician was just about done when the tenant called me to explain the extra cost and the work that was being performed. I told the tenant that ANY reputable lock company knows it is against the low to have a door on a business that is locked from the inside at a main fire exit. When she confronted the technician he said it was safer and not against the law. I explained to her that is is 100% against the fire code and the technician ultimately admitted he was aware but said it was "Much safer" for the business. He then said he would change it back to the way it was. He even tried to bill the tenant for having to change the illegal locks. I called Dawn & the Lock and was unable to get a hold of a manager. The customer was charged $643 to replace two locks. Update: Ori, the owner of Dawn & the Lock, called me the following evening and was very apologetic after reading my review. He explained that he does not normally use subcontractors and wanted to make things right. He appeared sincerely customer service based and wanted to make sure I was happy with the work that was performed by his subcontractor. I was very impressed how he resolved the incident.
