Prubechu is off the hook!! Been wanting to come here since they converted from being Roxy's, and finally decided to take my work team for dinner here. Inside still looks like the old Roxy's space, small, simple and no major kitchen - all induction burners and open kitchen style. But this doesn't affect anything, the food is absolutely fantastic! The duo of front of house Shawn and chef Shawn hold it down. The whole squad is from Guam, and they are representing proper. Had the 5 course tasting menu - but with the starter and dessert it was 7 awesome courses. Started with a flatbread with some insanely tasty coconut butter, and a daikon pickle thing. Then was a fried, soft boiled egg with various delicious add ons, followed by a chicken sausage type thing in a banana leaf with an dope but scorching hot sauce. Then a fried red rice type of dish with a quail egg and house made spam (!!!!!). Followed by a porridge dish with pork and finally a short rib dish. Finished with a coconut candy ice cream. The food was amazing, and broke any cliches about Guamanian bbq and other simple island cliches. It was homey flavors plated in a super refined elegant way, served in a casual, cozy environment. Service was friendly and white table cloth level care, without being fussy. Can't recommend this place enough. It might be the best $55 tasting menu in SF! read more

We've been here 6x now and love it. Opened in Feb by two friends, Shawn & Shawn, who's dream was to start a restaurant serving their native food. Both guys were friendly, attentive, and very happy to answer all our questions about Chamarro food. This Tasting Menu is always amazing. They experiment with different ingredients and flavors so the dishes are either completely different or modified for a twist on the last time. My fave: the porridge with quail egg and pork -- interesting flavors (a hint of sourness like Kim Chi + a brief, spicy kick) and I really liked the texture (almost like oatmeal). Reminded me of rice porridge my dad used to make when I got sick as a kid. Great vibe and fun atmosphere on a Saturday night. We ate from 8-10pm and had an awesome time. Walked home full and happy! Love this place. Has some delicious vegetarian options - the tamales are my favorite, the mushroom and cheese empanada is excellent, and the golai coconut spinach dish is lemony and very good. The lechen birenghenas (eggplant) is good and unique but cold, and I think I would prefer it hot. The portions are small, so it's a bit pricey, but so so good. read more

We are also originally from Guam, the lovely, gorgeous Island that the food from Prubechu gets its kick start and its impetus. First time having Guamanian food. It was delicious. Highlights were: Food: we did one chef's tasting and 3 dishes off the menu. It was waaayyyy to much food. The chef's tasting has 5 savory dishes and 1 dessert course and the portions are fairly large. It's also hearty food so we were extremely full by the end of the meal. The potato soup, shrimp ceviche, egg dish, pork belly and short rib dishes were delicious. Not a huge fan of the sausage and the dessert. I was intrigued when I read "Guamanian" as I was scrolling through random restaurants on yelp, then I clicked it and looked at the photos and saw the SPAM which unfortunately is not on their menu. I'm not sure if it's something you have to ask for but we decided to stick to the menu instead. After having dinner here I then realized that I am not really a fan of this type of cuisine, although we did only order 3 things off of the menu so I can't really tell based off of what we had. We were waiting a little longer than usual for our food but I can understand because it was a Friday night and the place was full. Their staff was friendly and the service was good, they refilled our glasses with water every time we took a sip. The empanadas were my favorite out of the 3 items, it was served hot and fresh. The Tinaktak was alright, it kind of reminded me of beef stroganoff but with an asian twist because they used coconut milk to cook it. I didn't really enjoy the chicken ceviche wrap, but to be fair I don't like ceviche in general and this wasn't my choice I just had a taste of it. I would still recommend this place though, if you want to try something different or maybe you're curious about what food from Guam tastes like then you should definitely try it out!! read more

The food while very pricey lacked flavor and is best forgotten. It's been only a day and I can barely remember what I ordered. I heard that they went broke at their last location and i'm sure it won't be long before they close their doors again. The plating of the food is attractive but not eye catching. Besides who really wants pretty food without flavor. Might as well be plastic. Next time if I feel like Guam food, I'll hop a flight to Las Vegas and eat at Red Rice. or to San Diego for Chamorro Grill, or to Seattle for Mas Pika. read more

The Chamorro flavors you crave with a twist. I've never been disappointed with the food and the vibe here. The Shawns and the rest of the staff are awesome! Their craft beer selection is always on point. Always, always get the Kelaguen, whichever kelaguen they have to offer on the menu. I love the Beef Tinaktak, which is traditionally served with rice but they serve it with noodles and it's amazing! Can't go wrong with the BBQ plates either. Their Koko fried chicken is damn good too even though I don't usually come here for fried chicken. I was pleasantly surprised. The pork belly dish was new on the menu from previous visits and obviously it did not disappoint. They've made the best and safest accommodations during COVID. Go here! This is an overlooked gem serving delicious Guamanian cuisine. We ordered almost one of everything on the menu between our group of four and liked every dish. We finished with a round of desserts that left us wishing we had room for more. Combined with the refreshing tuba (coconut wine) and passion fruit beer cocktail and extensive beer and wine list, Prubechu is a good value for the high level of execution and quality ingredients. My husband and I went here and ordered the vegetarian fiesta. I eat meat, but I didn't miss eating meat with this dish. My husband is a vegetarian. I seldom write reviews but I would like to first say that what Prubechu has done and what it offers is a unique and fantastic opportunity to experience a delicious, although obscure, cultural cuisine. I did the tasting menu and I ordered the red rice for the table to try as a nod to my festive Chamorro roots. This was a good amount of food, and although I am no culinary auteur, I did think that each dish in the tasting menu were unique and tasty and a breath of fresh air from all the American contemporary I've been accommodating lately. Hilights include the chicken kelaguen (their flatbread was delicious--I wanted a complete order of that alone lol), the succulent meat atop the porridge, the donni and finedene, and of course the Kadu. As a Chamorro, I see this restaurant as an achievement. You will rarely see a Chamorro cuisine anywhere outside of Guam, and certainly not presented with a gourmet flair. And so to me it is a fantastic way to share our cultural foods and what they represent. When I ate here I could not help but feel so proud as flavors of certain meats transported me back to barbecues at my uncle's house, and the slurp of soups reminded me of my younger brother's favorite dish at home. Proud to have my friends visit this place and experience something that matters more and more to me as I get older. Why the four stars? Only because I believe they can do even more and I look forward to the restaurant's evolution and growth. Side story: Six years ago I was rocking my Guam shirt at Bruno's right around the corner and a guy stops me and asks if I was from Guam. We get to talking and i remember him wearing a baseball cap in the club, that he was a student at the culinary academy in the city, and that his name might have been Shawn. My coworker tells me about Prubechu and we immediately make plans to eat here a few days later and I walk in to see a sou chef, the host, and the head chef...rocking a baseball cap. It was Shawn. The minute you walk through the doors, the smell of smoked pork will greet you. It'll start making you hungry. We opted to do the tasting menu. First was an amuse bouche of raw oyster shooter. Very refreshing. 1st course was a cooked egg with some fixings. Not bad but a little salty. 2nd course was the chicken kelegeun which was shredded chicken with spices on a flatbred. That was good. It would be good for light lunch or snack. For our 3rd course, we were supposed to have a shrimp patty soufflé but for some reason we didn't get it and they substituted some other vegetarian dish. That was not to my liking. It had pickled cucumbers, some other vegetables and a dollop of crème fraiche. That was way too salty. I could have passed on that. I don't remember the names here on out, but 4th course was this smoked pork dish on some pureed starch. That was my favorite. The pork was very flavorful and savory. I could have eaten a large bowl of that for a meal. 5th course was a dish of meat, rice, and vegetables served in a broth. That tasted like some comfort food that you would eat at home. Last course was homemade ice cream and coconut shavings. That was really good. I enjoyed that. Be sure to ask about the wine prices before ordering. It's not listed on the menu and we found out a bottle cost more than the price of the 1 pre-fixe tasting menu. Service here was very friendly. We liked this place. Given the crazy inconvenience of trying to park in this part of the Mission, not sure if we'll ever make it back here any time soon. But yeah, the food was definitely memorable and pretty good value. We had the tasting menu... pretty ingenious that the chefs here can pull this type of menu off without having access to either a stove or an oven (they use induction hot plates to do everything). But not having either means that they also don't have a vent so the restaurant was crazy hot. And not having either means that ironically a lot of the food is cooked ahead and then re-heated and therefore not that hot. That said, each course of the menu was better than the last. It started off kinda shaky with a warm oyster, but kept getting better and better until it finished with that wonderful coconut ice cream (still thinking about it). We were impressed by the unfamiliar taste profiles and the creativity of a lot of the dishes. If we come again we'll try some of the entrees which also looked quite good. The service was a bit uneven and the pace of service a bit off, but I'm confident that these guys will work out the kinks and make this restaurant into a local favorite. That might involve getting rid of the tasting menu (probably more suited to a different kind of restaurant) and just focusing on entrees. So if you're into a taste adventures you better try this place before this option disappears. read more

I don't typically write reviews, and I really try to avoid writing negative reviews when I have a bad experience as I feel it can always depend on circumstances outside of the restaurants control. Well, this is just a factual recount of a take out order I got from here Friday evening. I ordered the pork ribs a la carte and the pork rib meal. (~$14 for a la carte, ~$30 for the meal) what I received was two pieces of charred dried jerky texture meat on a bone for the a la carte, and for the meal I received the same amount and quality of ribs, just with a single scoop of rice and pickled vegetables. I ordered this as a treat as it's extremely pricey for what you get- and just chalked it up to it being good quality and cuisine I can't normally get out here, instead it's just overpriced gentrification. I honestly didn't know whether to laugh or cry after waiting almost 3 hours for the items to be delivered to open up the boxes to that. read more

I really wanted to like this place. But, most dishes were way too acidic for me. It definitely triggered my acid reflux problem. The tinaktak and the barbecue pork ribs were unbearably acidic. But, the wonderful spices and how the meat and noodles were prepared showed great potentials of the talents in the kitchen. Too bad the extremely high acid just killed it for me. The restaurant is owned and run by wonderful people from Guam, proud Chomorros and their heart, pride and humility is reflected in the food. Simple ingredients, put together beautifully creating culinary alchemy. We didn't even know where Guam was on a map when we walked in and left learning so much about the country, it's history and its people thanks to one of the owners of the restaurant who was also serving us. Wow. This place has got to be the city's best kept secret. At least for now. Everyone at our table got the $40 tasting menu...and we sounded like we were having an orgy. "Mmmm ahhh ooohhh so good mmmm oh myyy godddd...." After. Every. Dish. Didn't someone smart and profound say something about how good food is like good sex? Needless to say, we were blown away by the quality of the ingredients (Dirty Girl Produce and shipped directly from Guam), the visual appeal and preparation of each dish, and the perfectly in-sync flavors. Now, let's talk about the flavors you may encounter. First, there is spicy...the Chamorros don't kid around with the hot stuff. They have their own kickass hot sauce that is very spicy (you've been warned). Then there is sour...as in tangy coconut vinegar liquor. I didn't even know this existed! And then there is creamy coconut to whisk you away to a white-sand beach on a deserted island...well at least in your mind. Spicy, tangy, creamy, with a bit of soy umami, and some smokiness too....definitely a sexy party. $40 seems like an incredible deal for what we got: 6 dishes (including a dessert) + an raw oyster amuse. We also ordered the pickles and keleguan. Though they were good, they paled in comparison to the tasting menu dishes. This review is already too long, so I'll just mention a few highlights from our tasting dishes: sous-vide quail egg, achiote porridge, smoked pork belly, pork jerky, soy-coconut broth, perfect spring peas, okra, eggplant, morels, COCONUT CANDY ICE CREAM. Our meal took almost 3 hours, so don't be in a rush. This place is easy to miss...look for the faded Roxy's Cafe sign. Credit cards accepted (via Square). Just my honest opinion. No hate intended. Portions are not big at all for the price. 5 dollars for a small condiment cup of dinanchi. You have to order rice separate from the meats. For a whole meal you are spending well over 40-50 bucks per person. For 3 people we spent like 180 bucks and there were no leftovers. Now for the food....not what I was expecting. If you were raised on Chamorro food and are looking for a traditional home cooked Chamorro meal...ask your mom to cook for you. The food was okay. I realize they are going for a "California" version of Chamorro food, but some of the dishes have been changed so much it didn't resemble the traditional dish. Cons: The prices were too high. The tamales gisu (red side) had blue corn instead of or in addition to cornmeal. It gave it a totally different taste. So much so it shouldn't be called tamales gisu. They give you a tablespoon of finadene and a teaspoon of dinache...that's it! If you ask for more dinache they charge you...$2...for another teaspoon! What person uses only a tablespoon of finadene or a teaspoon of dinache? I've NEVER shared my empanada...even as a kid! An empanada order is for two people, but is ONE empanada...AND it's $8. Ai adai! The last thing I think is worth mentioning is their tinaktak. *sigh* It tasted like it had cream of mushroom soup in it and was so thick it was like gravy and they put it over PASTA...I guess when I look at it with my California eye it makes sense? Pros: There were some traditional tasting dishes like the potato salad, chicken and octopus keleguen, bonelos aga (sans the sesame seeds), dinanche, and golai hagon suni. I loved the tuba butter that came with the wonderful bread. Some of us ordered the Fiesta Table and others went A la cart. A la cart seems the best way to order. Shockingly overpriced small portions of very mediocre food. Reservation required credit card and would've charged $25 per person if cancelled less than three hours in advance--yet when we arrived, it was basically empty, almost no one else there. My husband and I went here last night and all I can say is... WOW! I don't think there has been a place we've eaten recently where we just kept making audible yummy noises the whole time. This place cannot be missed. Everything we had was good, and very surprisingly good at that! The bone-in short rib blew us away. It is so incredibly tender. Do NOT do the Tasting Course. It's an absolute SCAM. Seriously, WTF. How do you force people to do the tasting course just because your over 4 guests? We were at 5 guests for a low key birthday dinner. Anyways we hesitantly accepted to do the tasting course since their regular menu is bomb. But why not, give it a shot.... Thought it started decent with some delicious bread rolls then it went down hill from there. Basically the rest of the course was basically a squash soup, 1 sausage that was just ok, and 1 shrimp, and some sad porridge rice dish where the base was the earlier squash soup but turned into a thicker sauce. Oh and some bland coconut dessert that we left alone. $65 for that garbage of a set up per person. I don't mind paying x amount if the food is amazing. Food has no price if its good. This was a rip. Shit food courses that left you starving. We had to order their Fish at the end. Left there reeking of fried oil because dinner service took more than 3 hours. Unbelievable really. How can their regular menu be amazing, and their pre fix tasting the total opposite? Very unfortunate as I would of easily been a regular here. But the feeling of that night's experience and being ripped off will leave me bitter to never return. To the chef/ owner.
