Came to PS with a reservation made months in advance. upon arrival (early) we checked in and went to the restaurant to have a drink. The interaction with the front desk staff was where we had rude encounters. Almost seemed that we were not welcomed there. We had gone back at the time of reservation as another group was entering. the gentleman opened the door for the group in front of us, then walked away with the door shutting on us. We went in PS and found somewhere to sit after finding someone to ask. We were given waters by someone then never served or acknowledged after that by a server so we decided to get up and leave for obvious reasons. The decor and ambiance of the building and inside PS was nice but due to the lack of friendliness and welcoming of us we will think we will return. read more

I came here after some drinks at another venue to keep the night going. It was a spot I had bookmarked for a while. I did not make a reservation but I asked the front counter where it was. They said they could squeeze me in and boom! They unlocked the back door lol. I did not intend for it to be right there, but after going down some flight of stairs, it opened up to this basement bar area. You immediately face the bar which is nice and the bartender greeted us. We found a table and they had live music playing. We had our choice of seating so we sat at a booth, but I will say that the seating arrangement is a little tough. The space is smaller and it was hard for us to get a good view of the band bc of the pillar. When I thought about other spots, they all didn't really provide a good opening to the surroundings except for one large table that a group was already sitting. I think it was fine for the way the space is laid out, but I anticipated it being a tad bigger. We were attended to pretty quickly and we asked for recommendations. The only fronds was popular. We ordered the fugitive run and the ps old fashioned. Both drinks were done really well and it got a positive check in my book since I go to a lot of cocktail bars. The music was also nice because it was more calming and you could still have a conversation without it overpowering the atmosphere. We heard about this hidden speakeasy from a friend. The drinks are good, but there is not a good selection of sweet drinks. I would choose to visit Manifesto or Tikicat for sweet drinks. However, the drinks are worth the price and well made. We tried the aviation and the goats and rabbits cocktails. The aviation was a little sweet and lemony. The goats and rabbits was very similar to an old fashioned. If you want to get a drink and avoid crowds, this is the place. There were only three other people there on a Saturday night at 11:30 pm. I'm in Kansas City visiting for the weekend and my friends made reservations here at PS Speakeasy, which is located downstairs in the Phillips hotel in Downtown KC. The hotel and valet staff were very professional and friendly. They directed us downstairs to the Speakeasy. The first three steps were a little tricky but we all made it down without any tumbles! The atmosphere is very relaxed with dim lighting. Sensual music is playing in the background but you don't have to elevate your voice over it. We were a party of 5. The waitress directed us to a table and was accommodating the entire time. Most of my friends ordered the song bird but I decided to be daring and have The Negroni of darkness comprised of "Reiger gin, campari, cocchi rosa, cafe amaro, star anice bitters, orange bitters, and hellfire bitters". The bartender was super generous with the alcohol in all of the drinks and although they were strong they were also flavorful. We conversed on on various topics and laughed and drank and before we knew it hours had flown by. There are only a couple of speakeasies in KC, each one with their own style and their own house cocktails. PS is unique in that it has a 1920s aesthetic sure to remind you of the Great Gatsby. This speakeasy is located in the basement of the historic Hotel Phillips. The door is concealed, an unsuspecting door keeping the bar true to its roots. You will find yourself stepping down a narrow staircase until you arrive at the bar. This dimly lit space is casual in nature yet still has an air of sophistication. I can't say that I love the drinks, but of course, each cocktail is subject to individual taste. I got the Aviation, a classic cocktail that I was eager to try for the first time. The taste did not suit me as it tasted almost floral and too strong. If you are looking for a good recommendation for drinks to get, I would strongly suggest either the French martini or the Old Man in the Sea. I got to try sips of those drinks from my friends and they were delightful. Though this is not my favorite speakeasy in KC, it is definitely a strong option. The aesthetic and service is wonderful. The drinks were just not as great as I would have liked. But, if you are in the area, this is a great spot to check out. Plus, it is usually not too busy so you can be sure to get seats! read more

I had the pleasure of running into the opportunity to check out this speakeasy in Kansas City. Recommended by a server at Toms Town, this speakeasy was nothing short of spectacular. Located in the basement of Hotel Philips the entire experience was hush hush and exclusive. I don't like to complain but the only thing I would change is the temperature. It was very hot in the bar. Hotel Phillips is an absolute gem. This is better than manifesto. A must! 5 Stars. Update! I returned to visit 1/20/18. The hand crafted drink menu isn't as wonderful as it was when it first opened and I was disappointed that they only had one bartender on Saturday night making difficult drinks for the entire place!!! Taryn is my gurl! I dare say she might be the best mixologist I've ever met. She had my cocktail palette completely pegged to the point where after my first cocktail I pretty much trusted her to make whatever she wanted for me. She didn't go wrong. Each was different and interesting in their own way but I loved them all. I really should have taken photos of her amazing creations. She's also extremely friendly and personable. We can't wait to see her again. The space is really interesting and hard to find. No signs. You enter through the Hilton Hotel and proceed to check in desk. The hostess will take you through a door behind the front desk and down some stairs to a hidden bar. It's actually quite cool. The bar itself has high end Art Deco decor. Reservations are recommended because they have limited seating for covid. We didn't have reservations so I had to use my Hilton Diamond status to get us in. I would estimate that this location could seat about 78 people and there were exactly 6 individuals in the bar when we visited. The concept of this location is a basement mail sorting room that's been converted into a swank speakeasy. Aside from entering through a door by the front desk there's not much speakeasy to the feel at this location. The list of house drinks was limited and not overly inspired.It feels more like a corporate approach to a speakeasy. There's definitely potential but for now it feels just like a bar. read more

Oh my goodness. I was looking for a magical experience and heavens above did I get it! Went there on a Wednesday night, my friend and I poked around the Hotel Phillips not realizing it's hidden like an actual speakeasy. We finally asked the concierge where PS was located, and he asked us how many would be attending. We said 2 and he went and unlatched a secret panel in the wall for us to descend hidden stairs. At that moment my history nerd self began completely geeking out. We went downstairs into the room. There were green velvet semi circle booths, dark candlelight-like lighting, and a gorgeous bar. The menu was unique, and the bartenders were knowledgeable and patient while explaining the drinks. I ordered W. 39th St. Fizz, and my friend got Some Kind of Punch. Both were AMAZING, even if the price point made me gasp a little bit. All in all next time i go, I plan to dress up in swanky 1920s attire and feel like a fabulous flapper! I just went here for the first time the other night and had a great experience. It is dark and cozy and makes for the perfect date night. I thought the décor was perfect for the ambiance and for the feel of a speak easy. The dim lighting and soft jazz music playing in the background, transports you into a different time. Both of my drinks were really good and not something I would typically order. Our waitress was so nice and even asked us detailed questions to give suggestions on what to order. There was a large group of guests that had moved all the furniture around to sit their group. They were talking so loudly and wearing basketball shorts and t-shirts. Of course I know this doesn't reflect at all on PS but I do wish they had asked the group to be a bit more controlled or to lower their voices. I am surprised there is no dress code here. Not saying their needs to be one but I just found it interesting as it seems like the kind of place to try to monitor that. Over all I thought PS was great. So, the first time I came here I really enjoyed it. I heard that manifesto did the consulting for PS, so I was really hype. The atmosphere is amazing, the customer service is also great. The problem: the drinks are hit or miss. It really depends on who makes the drinks and for $13 and up, taste should be guaranteed. If I have a drink I love at this location, I want to love it each time I come not only when a certain person is mixing it. Also, if you come on a Thursday, be prepared for a $5 cover. Not a bad place if you are single. The clientele is 100% classy and fashionable. Really love the vibe! THE SERVICE The bar tenders are the best in KC. Sure it takes time to prepare the handcrafted cocktails but they are definitely worth the wait. The waitresses are friendly and treat you like a VIP. The only downside is the food menu is a little anemic. But that is only a minor quibble. THE PROGRAMMING The programming is where PS excels. Their Thursday nights are hot to death. Their live music line-up is world class and the best and most diverse in Kansas City. You can catch jazz bands (A La Mode) delivering incredible jam sessions or world renown DJS (DJ Joc Max) spinning neo-jazz, soulful breakbeats and contemporary be-bop. PS also have curated playlist that play when the music isn't live. The list are so good even Shazam can't identify many of the tracks. This a fantastic bar. Before you come here you should know that they don't serve food. Their drinks however are excellent. The bartender makes everything from scratch and it's all delicious. I think that my expectations were a little high. I have been to a few other speakeasies and have always been impressed. I will say that the location and having to ask to be buzzed in and then walking down to what I felt was something really hidden was cool and felt more like a speakeasy than other places I've been to. But, I was disappointed with the drink selection. The bartender was very friendly but it didn't seem like he was as seasoned with making the drinks as he had to look out of a menu book at the ingredients. I might give this place another try because the atmosphere was pretty chill, but wish they would expand their menu. It was just OK for me. Really nice place, but the lights were really bright (spotlights), and a huge amount of dust on the back of our booth (which made me sneeze the whole time we were there). The bar was full, or we would have sat there, so might be a better experience with the bartenders...everyone looked to be having fun there. Our waitress was nice, but acted as if we were bothering her. My husband's drink was good, but my cosmo was way too red and on the sweet side. We came here for cocktails after dinner at Tavernonna upstairs. What a great hidden gem (although I am sure the word will get out soon)! It is downstairs in the Hotel Phillips and we were led to it through the unmarked door and down the stairs. It is dark with dim lights with dark wood and fits with the speakeasy vibe. There are several booths and tables but we chose to sit at the bar. Very cozy with a classic old-school but modern vibe. The bartenders were all great although shout out to Mark who took care of us. Mark was friendly and very knowledgeable. Trust the bartenders - they know what they are doing. They were some of the better cocktails that I have had - and certainly the best in Kansas City. The Clover Club (gin, lemon, raspberry with egg white) was light and refreshing. It was a hit among the group along with the Westside (vodka, lemon, mint, soda). I also tried the Red Eyed Devil on a recommendation even though tequila is typically not my first choice but delicious! I also tried an off menu cocktail which was amazing even though I don't remember what it was called. They also made my sister a special Ramos Gin Fizz cocktail which seriously took 5-7 minutes of hardcore shaking but it was the best. The chairs were also very comfortable - so you can just stay and enjoy. Everyone was blown away. Kudos to Mark, Raymond and the rest of the staff for also handling a situation with another had-one-too-many customers with finesse. It is a high end cocktail spot (cocktails range from $10-14 on average) and definitely worth it. Highly highly recommend especially for something different. We were a little confused about how to get in here at first, but just ask the person at the hotel front desk and they'll help you out. Our cocktails were delicious. I took advantage of the "ask the bartender/mixologist" (suggested at the bottom of the menu). I explained I like bourbon drinks with chocolate or nut flavored bitters, and I was served a delicious drink. The bartender even wrote out the recipe so I could make at home/ask other bars to make the drink. We aren't from KC, but if I come back, this would be a must stop for drinks in the city. read more
