I enjoyed the atmosphere of this speakeasies but I must say the drinks I had were not very good. The waitress offered to take them back but we had already sent back one so I opted to just drink it. I was surprised that is location had a live DJ but it worked well. What I did not like was the cover charge, it was only $5.00 but with the drinks being a little pricey I was surprised at a door charge. This would not be my recommendation for a speakeasy but it would be on my recommendation lists. read more

We had an OpenTable reservation and when we tried to get in we were told it was closed. The hotel staff were rude about it. Acted like we were crazy. We left and I got an email that the reservation was cancelled 15 minutes later. I think the place was closed all weekend (New Years weekend). I'd previously been to the Hotel Phillips for my friends wedding and had heard about PS in passing. Was further intrigued after a discussion with a coworker about different speakeasys throughout KC. Finally decided to come here with a friend to experience a different speakeasy than my standard go-to Manifesto. I have a feeling, that similar to some other reviewers, my expectations were set too high. The experience of searching for the entrance and having to get buzzed down did give it a more realistic vibe than some of the other places that I've been. Unfortunately that was the only truly outstanding thing that happened during our visit. Service was phenomenal - although admittedly part of it had to do with the bartender comping our 3rd round of drinks due to a mistake with the kitchen. Obviously not his fault and, I'll be honest this was one of the few occasions where I felt the service outshone the food and the drinks. I feel like part of my disappointment stems from the fact that their hand crafted drink menu is relatively small compared to that of Tom's Town or Manifesto. While yummy there really weren't a lot of options for signature cocktails or food. Overall a nice low key experience. Wouldn't say no to coming back, but was overall underwhelmed. read more

I didn't order anything challenging just a bourbon neat but the selections looked excellent. Staff was friendly and attentive. Guys!! Have you ever wanted to feel like you are transformed into the past. We walked into the hotel and that is when the experience begins. Everything is so intricate and beautifully designed. Then you will be instructed to go to the front desk if you don't already know where to go. Then you are directed to the basement but it is like walking into the 1930s. Everything is so amazingly designed to make it not feel like you are even in the same world. You can stop and forget about your troubles and have conversation with your group. Dirty bar, no inventory, apathetic staff, etc. We tried sitting at the bar and it was like we had walked into someone's house without being invited; very standoffish. Service was otherwise painfully slow for a half empty bar, our waitress was rude and refused to take any drink orders until our party of 10 all knew what they wanted, and there was a $5 cover to boot. Our second party arrived and they wouldn't bring them down for 15 minutes after their reservation because the bartender was behind. Find a different place to see A La Mode (the fantastic jazz band) and skip this speakeasy. read more

Had a chance to check out P.S. after a wonderful dinner upstairs at Tavernonna. It's located in the basement of Hotel Phillips and is very quaint and cozy and perfectly lit to give the feel your in a exclusive establishment. The ambience was inviting and easy going. The seating had mid-century looks and was quite comfortable. Our server was fantastic and very engaging. She gave us excellent recommendations and we were not disappointed. They plan to offer food soon. I'd definitely add this to your list of stops on your next visit. Looking forward to our next visit. read more

I loved staying at Hotel Phillips and we had an excellent experience there. PS had an amazing ambiance and it was just a super cool atmosphere. However our service was slow, but not because it was super busy. And it wasn't apologetic so I'm not sure if thats the norm or what, but it wasn't great in that regard. The drinks were good but not great. I expected more hand crafted, they were just drinks you'd get at a nice hotel bar. First time visiting and I can tell already this will be a frequent favorite haunt! Hotel Phillips did an excellent job when they renovated and added this speakeasy. You come in and are taken down side stairs which are nicely lit unlike the scary ones at Manifesto. It feels very plush and luxe with comfy seating and dark rich walls and artwork. Great friendly server and lots of cocktail choices to pick from. Definitely look forward to another visit soon! read more

Went to PS last night night for the first time. We were told we would have a wait. No problem. We were told that the place was "packed" and it was "really tight" down there. Once we were taken down, about 20 minutes later, there were several empty tables. The first thing I noticed was that it was VERY LOUD, not intimate as I was expecting. The 2nd thing I noticed was that it took 20-25 minutes to get a drink. The waiter was unpersonable to say the least. The third thing was 2 cocktails were $34. While tasty, still overpriced. I'm afraid when looking for a romantic quiet spot with exceptional hand crafted cocktail, I will sneak in the back door of Manifesto. read more

It is so bad I want to give it a 0 but that's not possible so I'll give it a 1 (star review). We had a party of 12 and made separate reservations splitting up the party to help accommodate for 8:15 and 8:30. We arrived promptly at 8:15 and were told neither party could be sat until 8:45. While we waited, a group of four and a group of two were sat right away, even though we told them we were happy to split up. What is the point of reservation in that case? We were eventually sat at 9:00. The supervisor took our order and 20 mins later our drinks still weren't even being made. We ended up leaving and the bartender asked "are you leaving?", we said "yes" and the bartender says "great!" Safe to say we will not be back. read more

Alas, I did not have the same experience as my fellow Yelpers. The place started out impressive. I felt like I walked onto a Mad Men set entering the bar at the bottom of the stairs. Dimly lit, mid-century modern furniture and light fixtures. Mad props to the interior designer. The service and drinks were disappointing. Our waitress was unfamiliar with the drinks on the menu. When asked about one of the drinks, she said that one tastes herbally and was unable to explain what the spirits within the drink were (ie Luxardo is a cherry liquor). She gave the vibe that she did not want to be bothered. Our drinks did not have the right balance of flavors and tasted watered down. I thought the best one was the Clover gin. I would say the place is worth a gander. Call in, make a reservation. If you aren't feeling the service or the first round of drinks, take your patronage elsewhere. I stayed 3 nights at the Hotel Phillips lately and each day we ended the night at P.S. which is a cool bar in the basement of the Hotel. To enter the bar you need to ask the front desk to unlock a hidden door that takes you down the stairs to the basement. The bar itself is pretty dark, but the bar staff are very cool and inviting and can knock up a drink to satisfy any taste bud. One of the nights there was a cool R&B band playing that had a great singer. Will definitely be back here again next time I'm in KC. read more

Slooooow service. I was in town for a trade show and stopped in after our show with a group of 15 which included customers. Its striking to me the lack of enthusiasm of the staff in serving customers when their income is directly tied to the tip. We literally waited for up to 20 minutes for partial refills of 5-6 drinks at a time. A beer? The staff moved in first gear. Do you want a 10%tip on a $550 tab or a 15% tip on a $750 tab for serving drinks quicker? People left and moved on...... Nice place and good atmosphere for small groups.....but don't bring a large party. They aren't inspired. read more

Me and friends were visiting from out of town and staying at the hotel PS resides in. I came back after getting dinner and was not allowed to enter because they were not able to handle an above average Saturday night crowd on a national holiday weekend. I did get to go the day prior but was again was forced to wait 40 min from opening until the bartender was ready so the times on yelp/google are wrong. Only giving this place 2 stars based on the atmosphere which is clean I guess and like a speakeasy. It's in the hotel Phillips which is a nice throwback to the 20's type of hotel which is also cool. The drinks were AWFUL and the price is high. I would not recommend this place bc of that. The place is rather big for a speakeasy too and there is one waiter and one bartender so its a slow death. Our drinks both ordered from the menu tasted like Ecto Cooler and syrupy pear juice. Neither should be on a speakeasy menu where drinks are usually not he dryer side. We were not the only ones that night unsatisfied. We saw at least 2 other tables get up, pay their bill, and leave after drinking about 1/10th of their drinks.
