Really love the food, cocktails and fact that the wait staff is very knowledgeable. Think my only reason I give it four stars is because there hostess are often very pretentious. Walked in for a table, hostess was on the phone communicating the nights events. Didn't smile or signal that we were acknowledged. A wait staff came to ask her a question and didn't acknowledge us either being that her co-worker was on the phone. The hostess didn't look our way until she ended the call. When we asked for a table she simply responded. We don't have any seats and the kitchen closes in 15min. Nothing further. Not we re-open for dinner at such and such a time. Nothing. My husband and I eat here often as we are vegan. Bring clients and friends here too. See the same faces but never acknowledged. You don't feel very welcomed when you first walk in. But energy definitely shifts once you are seated. Ethan is super cool! Just makes me laugh being a person of color walking into predominantly white spaces. Their energy, body language and straight delivery never fails to display shock that we even know about it. Hope this improves as there is always room for improvement, and change. read more

We came to see a music show, there were virtually no seats and the show was oversold. We were hoping for a more comfortable experience.

This is my favorite place to hang out and do work during the day, and also my favorite place for drinks and music day or night. The space is beautiful, airy, and comfortable. For music there's really nowhere better in the city... the vibes are solid and the music is eclectic and the speakers are top notch. The music/club room in the band is also not to be missed for dancing or DJs or another event. And, all the food is vegan and tasty! What's not to like! read more

Had a super fun time here last weekend -- big part of that was due to the crowd. I feel like people really wanted to be there to actually dance and vibe to the music. Cool vibes, nice design, great music (Sunday reggae), very attentive server.... but the prices, OUCH! A small plate of brussel sprouts $14? Sweet potato fries $13? They are already "vegan" food so why so expensive? The drinks come in super small portions too, I joked with the server that she drank half on her way to delivering it! The kind of place I've been waiting for. I can't really compare this to many other venues in the city. Not a lot of places where I can get espresso, cowork and listen to records by day, then drink, dance and have dinner by night. The sound room and sound system is one of a kind, like I'm talking big quality here. I really enjoy the music curation and cocktail selection. Each time I return it seems as if they've added something new and interesting. The staff is pretty cool too, an eclectic mix who were pretty helpful at answering questions. This space is absolutely beautiful. Every tiny detail was thought about to curate this space. There is something for everyone cafe, food, music, and cocktails ( I loved the melon mezcal) yum! I love the Vegan options and zero waste philosophy of this place too, if we were all a little more conscientious about this, a lot could be done so it says a lot about the business. I'm actually sitting in the restaurant right now. It seems like no one knows what's going on. Everyone on the staff is disconnected (don't care attitude). I asked a member of the staff at the cafe about placing an order and he told me to go inside and ask a lady working the cash register. Asked the lady at the cash register about placing an order, she informed me to place an order at the cafe. Ordered a very simple item - kimchi grilled cheese and I'm sitting here very patiently while no one else in this establishment is waiting on food. Update - went back to the cafe to ask about my order and 35 mins later I have the food in front of me. FYI - the place was an absolute mess when I walked in but the sandwich and the vibe was great, but $15 for a vegan grilled cheese sandwich wasn't worth the hassle. read more

I drove over two hours to meet my friends. My friends had told the server that I would be coming late. I showed up and they turned me away and their suggestion was to sit at the bar....alone. They told me they didn't have an extra seat for me because a large party of 20 were to be coming. I had explained that I would just grab a drink and they told me they still couldn't do it. How do I put this...that is complete bullshit. When I left, I was told there were several seats available. I wouldnt have minded waiting for ten minutes while a table cleared up and for a chair to be made available. Here's a tip--learn how to accommodate your clientele better. I loved everything about this place. The entrance felt like your were entering a nite club and then you were in a beautiful courtyard with trees, rocks and tables. To the right is the restaurant and straight back dimly lit by a red light is the venue. The food at the restaurant was the best vegan food I've ever had. I only visited the main lounge area (not the "Club" room), so I can only comment on that. Very nice décor, and the DJ was playing some cool records. Sound system was nothing special to my ears. The main kicker here? The price of the drinks! $16-$18 for a basic mixed drink that is 80% ice?? Sorry, I cannot afford to hang out here. For some reason, I thought this would be like those "listening" bars in Japan, where it's really all about the music, and the sound system, but it's not. It's mostly about selling pricey drinks. I was really excited to see this place open in my neighborhood. After visiting Tokyo a few years ago and discovering/loving the HiFi bar culture there, I frankly couldn't wait for things like that to open here. I realize that the United States is a drastically different culture, but I hate to say that Public Records does not manage to capture the vibe of the bars that inspired it a world away. I will start with the most important thing - the sound. As a career studio professional, and as someone who has a lot of experience with boutique speaker systems, I was surprised to find that the "sound room" is really more of a "nightclub" and less of a "listening room". The sound system looks like it started its life as an industry-standard premium club system made by Void. It's decorated in some creative ways to make it look totally boutique, and it may be customized in ways I don't know about, but the overall sound coming out of the system was absolutely NOT "hi fi". It was loud as hell, brash, midrange-heavy, and generally hurt my ears, much like club systems are wont to do. My impression is that I should not have to wear earplugs for an Ambient show (Gigi Mason was great) and so I left mine at home. Boy what a mistake. Never in my life did I think I would have to walk out of an ambient show EARLY in order to save my hearing for the next day studio session I had. Wild. Generally speaking, the live sound mixing by the engineer for the show was amateur-hour. Gigi's electronic piano had zero reverb, and zero compression, and as such every note at that high volume (why?!?!) was piercing and borderline unlistenable. Terrible experience. Gigi Mason's albums are beautiful explorations of these very naïve musical ideals and are not meant to be listened to at 130 dBspl (I checked). Another small gripe - the sound room is clearly a very beautiful space, but I have to call BS on the "acoustic treatment". The low end was completely out of control with crazy peaks at certain frequencies. Anyone who has ever designed a studio knows that more money needs to be put into the acoustics than anything else. I understand that a venue's look must impress, especially in nyc, but to my ear the acoustics of the room itself were heavily overlooked here. If not, they weren't done well, that's for sure. The owners of the Tokyo HiFi bars are constantly tweaking the room acoustics and their sound system to optimize it and make it as good as humanly possible. The next thing I want to talk about is the opening act for this show. I generally like to give the opener a chance, and I try to be open minded, but if I was the owner of this establishment I would fire the talent buyer over this programming decision. The music was like watching paint dry - one of the most musically boring and uninspired performances I have ever seen. The ticket for this show claimed the start time was 7pm. At 7:30 or 7:45 the opening act still hadn't gone on. When they finally did, they spent an hour playing the same two chords over and over again at, once again, a volume level that made zero sense for the style of music. By the time Gigi Mason went on, everyone was already yawning. Again, terrible programming decision. You want the opening act to get everyone excited for the main act. Many times, that involves picking someone who is somewhat stylistically different from the headliner, not "headliner lite". As for the main space bar, it was pretty nice. Drinks were good. Vibe was friendly and fun despite being very crowded. Happy to have this in my neighborhood. My one gripe is that my wife and I ordered a pair of 14 dollar cocktails while waiting for the doors to open to the sound room. 5 or 10 minutes later, we were forced to dump our nice drinks into new aluminum cups. I understand why venues do this, because they don't want broken glass on the ground in a dark room, but might I suggest just starting with the aluminum cup to begin with? My margarita got totally decimated, and it was much too expensive for that nonsense. The bar inside the main space should just have these cups at the ready for people who are going into the sound room. Generally speaking, I am happy this place exists, but it appears they are undergoing some serious growing pains. I highly suggest re-examining the original inspiration for the place and going back to the drawing board a bit in terms of tuning the sound system and room acoustics. There is absolutely no reason for quiet music to be played at ear-splitting levels. It's just plain dumb. 130dBspl is straight hearing damage territory. It's literally impossible for anything to actually sound HiFi at those volume levels. read more

What can I say about this place, it had so much potential. It's ran poorly and the staff is horrible to customers. My friend and I waited on line had our ids checked twice before entering....weird but okay. The waiter made it seem like we weren't supposed to be there or we're in the way. I ordered a cocktail that had about twenty pink peppercorns floating on top and tasted just like any gin and tonic I've had from any ordinary dive. I loved this place over the springtime and couldn't wait to check out another show. I finally had the chance on Friday and it wasn't what I remembered. The dj wasn't exactly as advertised and the crowd was really young, drunk, and entitled. I think it's just a case of the word getting out and attracting an obnoxious Murray Hill crowd instead of catering to a solid Brooklyn based crowd who just want to go out and have a good time. I'm not sure what management could do exactly to remedy the problem- seems like it's the curse of getting too popular too quickly, and attracting a large cross section of people as a result. I think I'll wait until the buzz dies down and go back once the "cool kids" from Manhattan find someplace else to annoy. read more

Reminiscent of De School in Amsterdam, an inclusive, all-are-welcome space that's beautiful to exist within (in its many different environments), delicious to eat and drink at, and absolutely nails it when it comes to what it's all centered around--the music. We arrived after dinner for some cocktails, scenery, and electronic music. We were treated to softer, contemplative sounds around 8pm, which slowly--tastefully--blossomed into exactly the vibe we were looking for: intriguing beats that are played loud enough to enjoy, but in a setting that's acoustically engineered to make conversation still possible. read more
