I rented two spaces at the Grow Way location in Castro Valley, and faced several challenges: - I had to wait for the two slow elevators, and these elevators both break frequently. This makes it impossible to move large/ heavy items by stairs, and the elevators can remain broken for many days without being repaired. I had a space on the 3rd floor that I couldn't use much due to poor access. - It is dark inside the storage spaces and no lights are available. - Only one single cart available for this entire location. If the cart was in use by other customers, I had to wait for along time to get my turn. - I needed to have multiple hands to get through multiple doors. You will need to punch in access codes and hold the doors that have self closing hinges. This needs two people at the doors when moving items in or out. - The fees for my rentals started at about $1/ sq feet in December of 2023, then they were rapidly increased to $1.5/ sq feet, and $1.75/ sq feet in the matter of first three months. I had to vacate my spots after 4 months since my rental costs went from about $285 to about $540. Also, Public Storage does not provide for any prorated rental fees if you vacate before the end of a month. it is best to rent a space at the beginning of a month and vacate at the end of month so you don't have to pay for the time that you are not occupying the storage space. - Access is also limited to 6:00 PM during the week and only to 5:00PM on weekends. This is not convenient if you are working during the day and you have to take time away from work to access the storage spaces. While public storage only apologizes for their broken slow elevators instead fixing the elevators quickly, they will also send you a notice if you exit one minute late after the access hours due to using the stairs that are in the far corners of the building. Suggestion: consider getting a storage space that has an outdoor roll up access door if you are getting a large space for storing large or heavy items. This can save money and time if you need to rent a moving truck and hire people to move your items. read more

We are storing holiday and household items at this storage unit but 9/10 when we go they have zero rolling carts or even a dolly. We've been there with a loaded car at least 10 times and only used a dolly once, as they only have one for everybody. It's extremely frustrating! And, YES they are aware. We've had to go home multiple times with a loaded car. The lady at the desk said call ahead and they will find one but nobody answers the phone and they are rarely in the office. Only use this facility if you want your storage unit broken into and your belongings stolen! Both of my units were broken into and ransacked! They took what they wanted and left a total mess.. Bait and Switch - Buyer Beware I was planning to list my home for sale and needed to move my personal items out for staging. I had very little time to do this so I found the best/cheapest deal to put my things in storage for 2 1/2 months. I signed up on 3/15/22, moved in on 3/19/22 and it's been a mess ever since - here is the timeline. 3/15/22 signed up for $1 for the first month. Paid $52.04 and invoice (attached) said I would owe $89.60 on 4/1/22. 3/19/33 move in day! We arrived to find the unit I was given was in the back corner of the top floor. I asked Darcy who was helping me if there was a closer 10x10 available and she said yes. I asked to be moved to it, when she proceeded with this transaction I was charged an ADDITIONAL $91.43. When she asked for a review my boyfriend mentioned we hadn't received a refund of the $52.04 yet which was paid previously. She said she would be giving me a refund if that amount (he heard her). She did not mention that my first month for $1 deal would not transfer over to this unit. When I asked her about this later she said, "you didn't ask, I thought you just wanted to move in and it didn't matter". My realtor who was helping me went in and spoke to her as the cost discrepancy was really bothering me! Darcy said she would speak with her manager about the charges and if hear back during the week. I moved in. I received another invoice attached saying I was paying $91.43 (which is now on top of the $52.04 I already paid) and it stated the total rent due on 4/1/22 would be $211. I received another invoice/receipt for my "move of units" showing Payment due was $0. A few weeks go by and I see in the app I owe $211 on April 1. I called and spoke to the manager (a man I didn't get his name) and once I explained the issue he said Darcy didn't finish the transaction and they my $1 for the first month should be applied. He said he would submit a credit request for me. He called me back and asked me to give him a call. When I did he wasn't there but Darcy directed me to call the corporate office. I spoke to the corporate office and the woman was very nice. She helped me get to the bottom of my issue. She said they owed me $211 and because I was incorrectly billed for the first month when it should have been $1 (I think the second deposit was what I should have paid for April). She submitted a refund request and asked that I talk to my Public Storage to make sure they backup the request. Darcy called me and said she said the refund request in the system and she would call me once it's been applied. Some time goes by and I call in to find out status as I have no refunds, only charges. Darcy said, my request was denied. She said I should have asked about the special and since I didn't she didn't think it mattered to me - ummm $211 is a lot of Money. Apparently it's not her job to tell customers about costs associated with changes they make to their rental. During this conversation she said she would submit yet another refund request for the $52.04 and I just got a message saying that was declined because the $1 for the first month special doesn't transfer over from unit to unit. I had never moved anything into the first unit. I had never had a storage before. I was literally looking for the best deal and ended up with the worst. By the time I remove my items from this storage unit I will have paid the following ; $143.47 for the dates 3/19/22-3/31/22 (13 days) $211 for the Month of April $211 for the Month of May Can someone help me understand how a company can bait you in with a $1 for the first month sale, give you the worst unit available, offer a better unit but not tell you the $1 deal isn't going to transfer over and then charge you and additional deposit!? Can someone tell me how every single person I have spoken with said it was wrong and I should be getting refunded, but public storage continues to decline these requests?! My biggest issue with this is, these places know they have your personal items. They know that if you are paying to store them they must be of importance to you and they know these are the reasons they can rip you off. NEVER AGAIN! RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN! read more

Darcy and the whole Management team is ridiculous! We've had storage in both properties for a few years. It has gotten worst! They locked our storage unit after a missed payment. Once we paid all the late fees and liens we went to check on our unit a week later. They had rummaged through it all. Broken crystal and my moms thousands of dollars cultural mats which were placed in plastic coverings and taped up were torn and tossed all over the place. DO NOT RENT FROM PUBLIC STORAGE!! Because of their increases in rent I've spent the last two months downsizing my 10x15 space to (what I thought world be) a cheaper 10x7.5 Of course, all they have available is a 10x10 which is $201 a month compared to the $229 I'm currently paying. Whoopie! My real problem though is even if I move my stuff to a cheaper and safer location this Friday (July 3 or Sunday (July 5) per the contract, I will still be charged for the ENTIRE MONTHS RENT! This seems like a scam to me. Is their anyone who can Gove insight to the legality of such contracts? I've informed public storage that off there is any questions of legality I have no problems with having someone inform therm of this and taking appropriate action. Darcy was great when I first signed up last year, but she left or was fired? In less than 6 months as their customer, Public Storage pushed through a 40% increase on my unit. I called and complained and the manager relented, but 3 months later they increased my rent by 40% - and I had not been there even 1 year. Public Storage offers a competitive "bait and switch" online price, then in less than a year push through a hefty increase in your rent. I am not the only PS customer I met who complained about this strategy. They are a publicly held corporation with a NYSE ticker, I guess it's all about corporate profits. I am moving out this month to a locally owned storage facility nearby that only increases rent once a year, and NOT 40%. The unit I've rented is less, a lot less. DO NOT STORE YOUR STUFF HERE!!! We rented the largest unit in July 2016 to store our items as we were transitioning our living situation. Over the next 5 months we slowly moved most of the items from our house into here. Yesterday when we went by to grab something as we are planning to move within the next week or two, we found the lock on our unit had been changed and where our old lock had use to be had by cut thru. The front desk was not helpful and clueless that our unit had been cut into and the hasp had been damaged. Apparently they don't note such things on their daily lock checks?!? Long story short, three hours later with the help of the sheriff's office and fire department, we find that our unit had been ransacked. Had thousands of dollars with of items stolen and even more damaged. Public Storage has no security cameras in the hall and says they can't do much. They only have 4 cameras total and they have 2 in the main lobby, one in the main sidedoor, and one in the back, that's it. The emergency exit doors which open up to the side aren't even alarmed and gave no cameras so someone could prop them open after hours and no one would know. They freely admit this was possible and that it is not their problem. The sheriff we were with was dumbfounded at their response and lack of security procedures. Other units in our hallway also had their lock cut and the sheriff forced them to call all those effected. They even had the audacity to want you charge me for a new lock on my unit!?! Finally after talking about they're lack of security and awareness about what is going on in their facility they finally agreed to comp me a lock. Long story short this has been a nightmare. Do not rent here. The manager Darcy is mean and rude. They raise the price exponentially. My unit went from $365 to $526 in three months. They always have break ins cuz her daughter who also lives on the property, has meth head boyfriends who constantly break into units. They blamed me for the gate not working when it was some cheap ass contractor that broke the gate on purpose. They will never reopen the bathrooms. There are nails in the driveways cuz nobody cares enough to clean it up. Then when I vacated my unit, even though I was out by the end of the month, Darcy thinks she can still charge me for this next month!. So if I have to pay for this month EVEN THOUGH I HAVE VACATED MY UNIT you'd think I should at least still have access to the property. But they think I have to pay YET NOT HAVE ACCESS! This is the absolute WORST place! Darcy is rude and mean. And you might think you're getting a deal, but you're going to end up paying far more than you ever thought. This place is horrible. I could go on and on, I rented a 10X15ft unit on the third floor two years ago for $174/month. I was moving out of the country, with plans to come to remove my belongings when I got settled. Public Storage raised my monthly rent several times to the current rate of $387 with no advance notice. I returned three days ago to take a written inventory in preparation for the arrival of the movers today only to find that the elevators were "broken". It turns out that a customer of theirs (just like me) had been in the elevator when it broke down and the call button did not work, That person had to be rescued from the elevator and the elevator "red tagged" by the county as inoperable. That was 10 days ago. All customers needing to access their units have had to use the stairs (3 floors in my case). AND, the hours of access to our units have been cut from 6am to 9pm o 9:30 to 5:30 (office hours). This with no proper notice, only a hand-written note on the door to the office (which is occupied by personnel only sporadically throughout the day). When we asked for an update on availability of the elevator, we were told that NOW the city/county is requiring a thorough inspection of the elevator and premises, which was supposed to be done on an ANNUAL basis and had not been done since who-knows-when. And, in speaking to the Sherriff myself, I was told that this location has a serious problem with "transient" people who hide out and camp out in the facility, use and lock the bathroom AND cut locks off and rob units ON A REGULAR basis. The Sheriff I spoke to suggested that I MOVE MY BELONGINGS TO ANOTHER FACILITY. I am moving out today and paying my movers DOUBLE since they will have to carry everything down 3 flights of stairs. THE FACILTY IS UNABLE TO TELL THEIR CUSTOMERS WHEN OR IF THE ELEVATOR WILL BE RETURNED TO WORKING ORDER. And not being aware that I was only being allowed access during their "office hours", I was planning to work late last night to finish the inventory for the movers only to be ACCOSTED by the manager telling me that I have to leave...that I was there in my unit ILLEGALLY ....at 5:30 in the afternoon! Do not ever rent from this place two totes where stolen. These people where no help. Yes it was my fault I left them holding open the door. But I tried call over and over and no answer. Then they said there was no camera facing the door ... which is a bunch of bull shit . I did not care about all the clothes that where taken ... I only wanted my son's High School diploma he just graduated in May didn't have a graduation because of covid and I can not get a replacement. People that work there keep saying they would check there cameras and would get back to me and it never happened. We are currently drafting a letter to Public Storage Corporate and inquiring with management at a region level. Do NOT rent here. Go elsewhere. Darcy is beyond rude. Someone with that amount of attitude should not be working with people. We signed up using a promotion. Had these miscellaneous charges out of nowhere. When we inquired we were yelled at just for asking about it. She's awful. I wish I had read the reviews here first. There are many complaints of units being burglarized and the security is lacking. I see no cameras even though they advertised a security system. It almost makes me wonder if management is in on it due to the burglary rates. We are considering going through the trouble and expense of moving our stuff elsewhere due to the lack of professionalism and complaints of theft from other customers. There are other Public Storage places in better neighborhoods and storage facilities with higher standards. We invested in a Blink surveillance camera that runs on battery for two years. It turns on anytime someone opens the door to our unit, will make an awful noise from an app on our phone, and the police can be alerted immediately. Quite frankly we have nothing of huge monetary value. It's all memories of our kids and old books etc. A thief won't care though. I find it sad that we had to install our OWN security system for the time being at a facility that claims to pride itself on security. read more

Dishonest. TL;DR - don't store there. Once they get you in, the rates go up higher and you'll just have to suck it up because it's a hassle to move your stuff. Whatever you are quoted online for a storage unit, be aware of the mandatory "Insurance" they make you buy once you get to Public Storage. In our case, our $125/mo went up by $11 a month because of some shady insurance they made us buy. If you google "public storage", "insurance", and "lawsuit" you'll find that it's just an unscrupulous business practice on their part. You can somehow escape the insurance requirement if you have homeowner's insurance that covers rental units. So if you have it, get that paperwork handy so you prove you have such a thing and save some money. We moved our stuff in in May 2018. It's now September 2018, a mere 4 months later, and I receive this lovely email: "In keeping up with our high standards of location storage, it's occasionally necessary to make adjustments to our rates. You can rest assured that our commitment to quality customer service has never been stronger. " My storage unit will now cost me $165/mo -- a 32% increase of my quoted rate of $125/mo from May 2018. Unfortunately they do not tell you when you are reserving and purchasing a unit that they are going to proceed to gash you and everyone that stays a loyal customer with RIDICULOUS rate increases. YIKES it should be embarrassing to them. I would have given 1 star based on business conduct, but I gave them 2 stars because they do keep the place neat, in all Fairness to them [unlike them to their loyal customers]. They wait until you get your items in then HURL increases at you, that they expect you will just pay instead of having to move all of your items. Then they tell you can not move to another unit to get a better rate unless you have your things out of their location for 7 days to be able to move back in. SO you can literally start out paying like 89.00 for a unit and look up some time after and your bill becomes $210.00 monthly or more??? And you are the LOYAL customer. Come to find out the ONLY cameras on this property are in the elevators and they say they will only look at the video if you tell them within 2-3 hours of robbery. Is that even possible? Who goes to their storage unit every few hours, every day? Probably only those preparing to rob you, so they can see when you come and go. How can a place where people store their possessions not have cameras watching the entire property? And since there have been break-ins before, don't you think they would know protocol and do what they could to help to customers who have just been robbed out? Simple things like informing the customer that they should file a police report? If I've never been robbed, how would I know? And if you've been through this before, you would have the experience and help your customer's out. On their website they stress "To ensure 100% customer satisfaction." Don't use this place. They have without any notice to their customers reduced their gate hours from 6am to 9pm all week to 9.30am - 6pm on weekdays and 9.30am - 5pm on weekends. This means that if you work fulltime you will only have access to your storage on weekends. And there is no change in their prices. I have a contract with them stating 6am - 9pm all week. I have been very satisfied until now but they obviously don't care about their customers, they just want our money! read more

I hadn't checked the hours. But with 2 minutes to go, I made the mistake of (gasp) knocking on the door when I saw Ellen in there. She yelled something at me through the closed door I didn't hear. When I got in I got scolded by her that the computers won't even let them log in. Ok. Lesson. learned. Damn I haven't been scolded in 25 years! Second bad experience. I informed them I don't get paid until the 20th. I was politely informed that would be ok, however I would incur a late charge. They would note my account. I load up my car and head to the storage, I go in to ask Ellen for a cart, she says they don't have any. Figured I'd wait for one, I forgot my purse, so I didn't have my code, I asked for my code, she informed me my code was locked out by the computer until I paid. I said but I told them I get paid on the 20th, she said it's noted, but the computer still locks you out until you pay. (would've been nice to be told that when informed of the late fee....) How about a little customer service? Like, "I'm sorry you weren't informed about that, I can let you in as a one time courtesy but after this, please be advised you will not have access when paying late" What happened to the smiley friendly lady who signed me up?
