Wonderful Historic Hotel This historic hotel on the commons was originally built about 1771. But has been renovated to keep updated for the times. Buildings still reflect the style of the residential area. Check in was straight forward, staff courteous and efficient. We had a lovely clean comfortable room in the newly opened facility. Restaurant is in the main building and fully recommend making a reservation as with so many venues going on it is usually packed. Food was delicious. Many locals come here for breakfast lunch and dinner. There is bar and another restaurant downstairs on first come basis. Downstairs is also the bakery with a large selection of items to choose from. The bakery provides free coffee and a small selection of pastries for hotel guests. Several covered outside patios in the area provided pleasant atmosphere and relaxing places to read or eat. WiFi is free and available throughout. There is swimming pool far in the back upper area. Several large areas/rooms are available for events such as weddings, bridal shower, birthday, memorials, reunion and business. There were numerous ones in progress while were there. Parking is free with several large lots. No valet. We will most definitely stay here again. read more

The Publick House, much like Storrowtown Tavern which I just recently reviewed, relies on its historical charm to pick up the weight its meals dropped without a care. It's quite evident that the chef here doesn't care about food. I ate with a party of 16 or so, including family, so I was allowed to sample most of the slop. And that's what it is - slop with the twinkle of historical Americana and the promise of a meal that is an authentic replication of what those who first walked through the front door some 250 years ago might have enjoyed. As if I needed another reason to be thankful that I'm alive today, and not during the mid 18th century. I started out with a basic salad. I think it cost $10, and could have been rendered in my kitchen with a $2 bag of lettuce and some Wishbone dressing. Not impressive. Up next was the scallops in "beach broth" or some other dreary description trying to inject a dash of color into an entirely colorless meal. For $15 or so dollars I got four tiny, overlooked scallops, a few potato cubes and some depressing-looking bacon (why can't restaurants do bacon right?!) drowning in a watery, tasteless broth. Why? What is the point of this meal? It's not nutritious, it's not visually appealing and it certainly wasn't tasty. I rounded out my culinary insanity-test with some breaded baked fish. It was exactly as you'd expect it to be - dry and flavorless. To think that a poor fish had to give up its life to be wasted in such a fashion. What an ignominious end to that poor little fish. Am I supposed to enjoy this? Is anyone? Does the chef try these meals before he or she serves them, or do they just hope that whatever they threw together would be edible? And why is the wait staff completely mentally absent? I really try and give everyone the benefit of the doubt, and almost never complain about service, but my god, our server looked (and acted) like he was high. Maybe the restaurant pays its staff in food...it would be understandable if he needed to smoke a fatty to make it palatable. I've had worse food, sure, but the Publick House has so much potential that is just p**ses away. Hmmm...maybe that's what the scallop broth was made out of. read more

A lot of charm from being in the Publick house adds to your dining experience. They have been serving guests for over 230 years. The historical dining rooms and tavern offers several open hearths and a lot of ambiance. I had lunch here twice, once having the fried haddock sandwich and once having lobster ravioli. I enjoyed both. They make their own potato chips and have their own in house bakery. They feature Sunday brunch and a dinner theatre package, which includes dinner for two, breakfast for two, two tickets to the Stageloft Repertory Theater, plus one night's stay in their Inn. read more

This place is eerie, there's no two ways about it. Located on an isolated road with nary a food or fuel option that seems to extend past 8pm lies the Public House Historic Inn. Unfortunately in this case, "historic" seems to mean "we're never updating this place". The desk clerk looked fresh out of My Chemical Romance, and was humorless and unpleasant during the check in process. When I asked about any surrounding dining options, I was told to look online because "this isn't the big city you're clearly used to". Well, fuck you very much. The room was clean, though required a map, a drive up the hill and through a giant complex that looked like a mix between 1970's ski chalets and Bates Motel to access. Huge room, however, with functional everything (including a behemoth CRT TV that groaned its way to life and featured lines and magnetic distortion all over the place.) The walls were covered in perhaps the ugliest purple patterened wallpaper ever, covered in some sort of battle scenes if I recall correctly. As much as I would have liked to sit on the attached deck and enjoy a beverage, there was no seating in our unit, unlike in others, and our deck looked like the sort of place you wouldn't want two people standing at the same time. Look, it could be worse. No bedbug bites, no serial killers, and no mysterious organic matter to be found around the room. But for the price, location, and quality of service and surroundings...keep driving. read more

Service (+). Each and every time I have been there the staff has been very friendly and helpful. This evening Charles was very friendly and after offering the specials went into details about some of his favorites. I ordered a couple appetizers and soup and he recommended a size lower as the amount of food I ordered was quite a bit. He was correct! Cost (+). You can make it an expensive evening and feast on leg of lamb, scallops and lobster rolls or you can choose a less expensive fare of Mac and cheese and chicken pot pie. Everything on the menu is priced appropriately and there is value in your purchase. Atmosphere (+). What a neat place. The dining room I was in had old fashioned wooden chairs and tables, decorated very old style with a huge open fire place. The entire establishment has an air of "old town" and "old fashioned". While being a summer favorite, the atmosphere in the winter is even more amazing. Palate (+). The menu has food for all tastes. The lamb is amazing and the clam chowder is fresh. The pot pie and the home-style turkey dinner are all amazing. Every time I go it is a new and amazing experience. A neat thing I noticed this evening is that the clam chowder was served in a heated pewter soup "crock". The crock remained very hot until the very end meaning the soup inside never cooled. Everything Else (+). This is a very neat old "Publick House" that is a combination old style hotel and restaurant. It is worth a walk around the inside and outside before and/or after your meal. It has a really neat "old-time" feel to it and multiple dining areas. You need to visit it more than once and in different seasons. The summer motif is much different than the winter motif, but the rating remains the same. The crab in the crab sandwich I ate tasted like it came out of a can, and the service was scatterbrained. If it was my first time there, I'd never return That said, I've been to there before and really do like the Publick House. I consider this last visit an aberration and will probably go back the next time I'm out in Sturbridge. It is a grand stately inn in the classic New England style, with a wealth of tables spread across multiple rooms. It is so quaint and timeless that you kind of lose chronological sense when you're in there. Someone could walk in wearing a wig and wool stockings after tying up his horse outside and you probably wouldn't bat an eye. The food can be hit or miss, I think. Stick to breakfasts, or classic northeastern fare. If you haven't read about our founding fathers eating it, don't order it. One item (or category of items, more specifically) that you should pay close attention to is the bread. With a bakery on site, there are sticky buns and cornbread aplenty on every table. If you're there during the day, stop by that bakery and take a bag home with you. You will be popping them like Tic Tacs for days afterwards. Overall, it's worth a trip either as an example of beautiful colonial architecture or a place to get a nice soup and sandwich. Take plenty of pictures, and eat like George Washington. read more

A bundle of ambiance in a quintessential New England setting. My post-Thanksgiving food coma came to a head here. The Lobster Pie was so rich and chock full of lobster that I could barely move from my seat in the warm and cozy main dining room. It's got more lobster than you ever imagined. The staff was nothing but helpful and charming. How these people deal with the screaming, squirming kids I saw running around the inn , I don't know. The front desk clerk even offered us the front desk number and said she (and Mapquest) would help us navigate back to Boston if we got lost along the way. If you're stuck in traffic getting from I-84 to the Mass Pike, I highly recommend that you head here. (And don't miss the Bake Shoppe! Everything is homemade and delicious.) read more

If you like delicious homemade food, good service, and a classic New England inn dining atmosphere, then you'll undoubtedly enjoy eating at the Publick House!! Situated inside an inn, the restaurant in the Publick House has a fantastic older New England atmosphere that is extremely comfortable and enjoyable. Some of the tables and chairs wobble; the wooden floors creak; and oil candles burn warmly on each table. A wide range of meals is offered for guests--those staying at the inn and those stopping by for a bite. Each dish is fresh and made from scratch, from the gravies to the butternut squash to the breads (pecan sticky buns and spices breads included) to the whipped butter. Everything is cooked perfectly, too. I discovered a new favorite dessert here: a Rumchata hot chocolate. It's perfect in sweetness, with a clean taste. It's served with a huge topping of whipped cream. Mine was served with little drips of melting whipped cream rolling down the sides--which I happily licked up before sipping the hot chocolate!! This is the perfect treat for a cold autumn day in New England. The service at the Publick House is just as good as its food. The staff carefully weaves around the grid of tables, across the old wooden (and slightly uneven) floors to pour water and serve the dishes. Our server, April, was wonderful. She was extremely friendly and hard-working. When I was contemplating dessert, I asked what Rumchata tasted like since I had never had it; she described it perfectly-and it tasted exactly like she said. She definitely helped to make our first dining experience here a positive and enjoyable one!! So if quaint surroundings and freshly made meals appeal to you, be sure to stop by the Publick House!! Plenty of parking behind the Inn. The baked good at the entrance look delicious. The breadbasket had what looked like a mini sticky bun. Passable. The dining room upstairs is very dark and rustic. The other dining rooms looked similar. Some people may find this decor charming. Service was prompt, friendly and good. Food was ok. Not a good value. Restaurant has a gluten free menu though. One visit was enough for the experience. And oh, the average age of the dining crowd appeared to be about 70 years old on the day we had lunch. read more

We stayed one night in the Publick house because we were in town for a family members funeral. My husband booked the reservation online, we got an acceptable price. I do have a few complaints. My first complaint would be that there was no coffee maker or mini fridge in the room. The website informed us that there was and I had brought leftovers from the restaurant that ended up being thrown out. I also was not happy that there was no coffee maker in the room, again the website said there was. It was freezing outside and I had to take a 5 minute walk to get coffee in the morning, not cool. The bathroom was excessively small and needed to be redone, the ceiling was stained as was the shower. The wallpaper is on a whole different level. I was offended by it actually. It's a scene of pilgrims? Huners? Hunting and spearing deer, some of the deer are trying to get away and being stabbed in multiple places. It was a bit unsettling for my young children and solicited some questions. It made it a bit worse that the drawings on the wallpaper were in a deep blood red color. The Publick house might want to consider a wall change. I've added a picture of the paper for your viewing pleasure, no need to thank me. On the plus side we were able to run just the fan from the wall heater all night, it was great to have that white noise to sleep to. There is also a nice set of sliding glass doors off of the room (with the same deer murdering curtains) that I'm sure would be beautiful to open during the day. Overall our stay was OK, if I have to go back to that area I will very likely choose a different place to stay. I'd rather pay the extra twenty bucks to say in a newer hotel. read more

We have been coming to the inn for a long time, We like both upstairs and downstairs in the tavern, Generally good food fair service, this time fair food poor service, I don't know whether I should start with the food or our server, let's start by saying that it was not a busy night, and I will start with Owen, 15 minute wait before he even came to the table, I get the new age Man bun, and the full beard, but serving food? I think management needs an identity check, maybe if he was a little more attentive and I didn't have to go up to the bar to get my second round of drinks for the table and have another waitress fill the waters, because of waiting so long for him, I don't have a clue what took him so long, maybe retraining or a different position ! This is the meeting place for my cousin (who lives in West Hartford CT) and I when we want to meet somewhat mid-way for lunch or dinner. I've been here for Easter Brunch (which was in their large function room... Orchards?), dinner in the main dining room and casual lunch/dinner in the bar. We met yesterday for lunch, and the Inn was bustling! A wedding was taking place (and I got to chat with the bride in the ladies room.... what is it about seeing a random bride that makes people so happy??), the bakery was a mob-scene, and there was a little wait in the bar, but we were fine with that. We were both craving the bacon cheeseburger, and while we waited the basket of bakery goodies arrived. Honestly, I could have just sat in the bakery and been happy, eating warm sticky pecan rolls, but I was open to eating a basket of baked goods AND my burger! Picked up two sticky buns and a whoopie pie to take home as well..... The only downside was the bartender, a not-friendly woman working at 2PM on 9/30. Blonde-ish hair, an accent of some sort (European?) who just shrugged when we said our sodas were flat. They didn't just taste flat, but she could clearly see that there were no bubbles in the glass. Wish we had been able to see the ground before we got there. It was pretty in the morning. Room was clean. Nothing special. Again very dark going up to wear our room was in the back lot, could probably benefit from a little more lighting. Other than that liked it a lot. They weren't phased that the water glasses and silverware were covered in dust. I was first introduced to Publick House while attending a wedding here a couple years ago. The wedding was so memorable and I really enjoyed the food and atmosphere. I am a huge fan of historic inns so this is definitely my happy place. Publick House maintains its authenticity with the wide and well worn floor boards, large walk-in fireplaces in many rooms, and exposed beams along the low ceilings. The inn has its own bakery which offers a variety of delicious baked goods from cookies to their signature pecan rolls. These items can be purchased direct at the bake shop located at the rear of the inn. A large basket of pecan rolls, corn bread, and muffins are also served before dinner in the tavern and dining room. My diet is quickly forgotten during every visit to Publick House. The inn offers guest rooms plus a couple different options for accommodations. There is the Chamberlain House located directly next to the main building and also a motor lodge set on a hill overlooking the inn. Chamberlain House was undergoing renovations during our stay and scheduled for its grand re-opening summer 2015. We stayed the night in the motor lodge. The rooms are simple, but clean and comfortable. The rooms have a more modern feel, but the wallpaper and furniture styles give it the colonial edge. I tagged along with two very good friends as they toured Publick House as a possible wedding venue. We had a wonderful weekend and enjoyed two delicious meals during our stay. Breakfast is served buffet style on the weekends. The buffet offers many choices including homemade quiche, pancakes, and scrambled eggs. The bacon was cooked perfectly. There is a tavern and dining room which offers the same menu within two different settings. Both rooms offer the same cozy, rustic feel. The food here is homemade and delicious. We met with Lisa the wedding coordinator. She was wonderful and super helpful. The tour took us through the inn's beautiful ballroom and my friends felt very satisfied with the information they received to help plan their wedding. From my most recent birthday dinner, I happen to be traveling on business through Massachusetts. We stopped at the Publick House old historic dining room. It was a lot of fun, and they had a really cool variety of offerings. An interesting fact is that they are for Thanksgiving dinner every single day of the week. I did not have it, but others did and it smells and looks great. I decided to have the Indian putting with ice cream as an appetizer rather than dessert. Since it was my birthday, that seems like a fun thing to do. I really enjoy Indian pudding, and all of the spices that are in that type of food. I refer to that as the season of fall spices. Think of a pumpkin latte from Starbucks, but in a putting form. Although I haven't been eating much meat lately, I did decide to have the duck. Again, I was really delighted with how they manage to pull that off. As a drink I had the Manhattan of their local making. There was a huge party happening out on the lawn, under a really big tent. So the place was incredibly busy, but not in the dining room. The service was great, and the parking was OK. We didn't have much time to spend in Sturbridge, but I definitely think this is a place that I would recommend people go. read more

This is so over-rated and not worth the money! We came in on Monday, July 12, 2021, the night before the Brimfield Antiques Fair. To start: Hostess was rude and definitely in over her head. Food was poorly presented (roast turkey dinnerand pot roast dinner). I've been to diners that made the food look a lot more appealing. Food was cold and when we complained they heated to a temperature close to the surface of the sun! Did bother to stay for dessert. So not worth it. Left with a very negative feeling. The good: Was visiting Brimfield Flea market we decided to stay here. Good pricing and convenient location. Nice pools , bakery and dining. The bad: We first came to check in and the manager working at the time was very rude to a veteran. The elderly gentleman wanted to use his veteran discount. The manager was being very stern/rude in demanding his military ID as if he was lying to her. There was simply no need to embarrass the veteran in front of other customers. Very unprofessional customer service. Another act of unprofessional customer service was with the same manager. We had a room with 2 queen beds and there was 4 of us. Every room comes with 2 sets of towels. So we went down to the office to request for 2 more sets and the manager again was rude explaining that if we take all the towels there will be none left for everyone else. She was acting as if we were a burden by requesting towels. read more

We were there for a wedding that I officiated. The charm of this place is perfect for a wedding but the food we had for dinner and breakfast were only subpar. Our dinner was late coming out and when we finally did receive it my fries and burger were cold. My husbands scallops were burnt and mediocre and the rice was bland and also cold. The only thing hot were the scallops. Probably waiting for the scallops to cook made everything else cold while waiting. The following morning we ordered breakfast sandwiches on croissants that were again, cold, the sausage wasn't cooked enough, and the potatoes were so salty (and I like salt) they were inedible. My husband and I stopped here for the night on our way up to Maine and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Our room was lovely and the bed was so cozy. We had dinner and everything was delicious. My husband had the salmon and I had the roast chicken. They also took good care of me with gluten-free rolls and a dessert. In the morning, we enjoyed walking around the beautiful garden before checking out. I would definitely stay here again! read more
