This is a beautiful old inn, off the beaten track in rural Massachusetts. It is a restaurant, tavern, inn and wedding venue. It's a bucolic setting framed by fields, farms and rolling hills. We were greeted by a roaring fire as we were led to our table. Wait a minute, what are those giant slabs of meat in front of the fire. We were told that they were prime rib, which was one of the specials for they were offering for lunch. They were cooking on a 17th-century roasting jack, purportedly the only one still in use in the US. No wonder it smells great in here! Our reservation was for 12:30 and we were seated immediately, there were still many tables open. We left an hour later and the place was packed! I'd recommend a reservation. The menu is traditional colonial and we ordered: * Prime Rib au Jus (with baked potato, pickled beets) * Chicken Pot Pie (with mashed potatoes and zucchini) chicken, carrots, velvet sauce, homemade buttermilk biscuit Water followed by, just cooked pumpkin muffins arrived at our table. They were delicious, I could have eaten a baker's dozen of these. Service was excellent throughout our meal. The Prime Rib was perfectly cooked, medium rare, and very tasty. The Chicken Pot Pie was good, but would have benefited from more sauce. The potatoes were cooked nicely, the zucchini was soggy. Overall, a very good meal and dining experience. I agree with my fellow Yelpers, a solid 4-stars.

I had my wedding October 2025 at Salem Cross in. It has been 3 months and my guests are still raving about the beauty of the venue and how amazing the food was. I found this venue due to a co-worker recommended it since she got married there and knew Salem Cross had the vibe I was going for. From the moment I reached out, Donna was so friendly. My Fiancé and I toured the venue and were absolutely stunned with the beauty of it. After booking the venue, Donna was great at communicating with us whether it was through phone calls or email. She addressed all our questions is a timely and professional manner. For our wedding we picked Rustic Chicken and Open Fire Prime Rib for our meals and Apple Crisp for our dessert. Both dinner options were absolutely delicious and all of our guests loved everything from the Appetizers, to the Main Meal to the Dessert. Overall, Salem Cross in was an amazing place to have our wedding! It gave a great rustic vibe and it was intimate. The food was amazing and Donna and her staff really made things run smoothly and made my Wedding one of the best days of my life!

At Salem Cross Inn during Select Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays from November through April, a special dining event called the Fireplace Feast is held. Friday Feasts are held at 6:00pm, Saturday Feasts are held at 5:30pm, and Sunday Feasts are held at 12:30pm. The Fireplace Feast is an advanced ticket only dining event and tickets can be purchased on their website: https://www.salemcrossinn.com/events/dining-events/fireplace-feast/. When I first heard about the Fireplace Feasts in 2023, I tried to make a reservation but it was all sold out. I knew better for 2024 so on October 21, 2024, I purchased tickets for the Fireplace Feast on Sunday, 02/02/2025 at 12:30pm. Surprisingly, but not so surprising, many of the dates were already sold out. Each Adult Ticket is $89.00 and Child Ticket is $30.00. All tickets are non-refundable and non-transferrable. The long-awaited day arrived! My husband and I arrived at Salem Cross Inn in West Brookfield, MA a few minutes before 12:30pm. There is a huge parking lot and a lot of people were arriving at the same time. We walked in and a hostess was telling us to go downstairs for the Fireplace Feast. We checked in with the hostess and were informed to enjoy some crackers, fruit, and spread, to see the prime rib roasting on an authentic Roasting Jack as it rotates slowly over a crackling fire of wild cherry logs, to go for a horse drawn wagon through the valley on the Inn's pristine 600 acres, gave us a ticket for a glass of warm mulled wine or cider, to later watch chowder being made in a cast iron cauldron over a crackling fire, and then gave us a piece of paper with our table number for when we go upstairs. We first enjoyed watching the prime rib roast while having some crackers, fruit, and Salem Cross Inn's famous cheese spread. This was a delicious spread and very addictive. The fireplace was very warm and perfect for the cold weather. We saw the horse drawn wagon was waiting outside so we went and got on. The ride was about 10-20 minutes and we saw some cows on the acre. Just coming from the outside, a glass of warm mulled wine was perfect. Soon after, the staff grabbed our attention to watch them make chowder and add in all the ingredients. Guests were invited to stir the chowder as it bubbles in the cast iron cauldron over a crackling fire. Next, we were all invited to go upstairs to the barn & loft. The barn and loft is very spacious and had many long tables. Each table had a table number so it was easy to find which table we were seated at (felt like we were at a wedding.) We first had a cup of the Chowder of the Sea straight from the cauldron that we saw downstairs. The chowder was filled with seafood and creamy. Next, homemade rolls and muffins were brought to the table. Then, the prime rib that we saw roasting downstairs was served. The portion was huge and it came with herbed roasted potatoes and fresh butternut squash. Next, a staff member came around to show us this huge bowl of freshly whipped cream. Then, we all sang Happy Birthday and a few guests received a plate of dessert for their birthday or anniversary. The staff called us up by table to get a piece of apple pie with freshly whipped cream. The staff member serving the whip cream asked if you like it or love it. Depending on your answer, that would be how big your dollop of fresh whipped cream was. The whip cream was so light and fluffy and smooth. WOW. This whole experience was really fun and totally worth it. Some guests came with their family and some with their partner; it's great for small groups or big groups. After each item was served once, the staff asked if anyone wanted seconds, which was very generous. I promise that you will not be leaving hungry. Though all the food was cooked at a large quantity, I mean the event is sold out, it was really good and good quality. The Fireplace Feast at Salem Cross Inn is definitely worth checking out!

This quintessential primitive New England inn and tavern is nestled among the rolling hills, fields, and stone walls of Massachusetts. Historic thick massive beams from the 1700s, wide board floors, colors are historic blues and golds, old prints of famous founding, fathers, shipping industry, and life in primitive New England, all help to create a charming warm inviting environment. Interior has multiple levels and many dining rooms. There's also a main dining hall for big events, weddings, and parties. Of course there are multiple stone Fireplaces in both the dining rooms and the original downstairs bar lounge. Menu offers classic New England standards, as well as a modern twist to some of those classics. The prime rib dinner is a stand out and sells out fast make reservations in advance. The classic French onion soup was delicious as were the lamb lollipops, the Salem Cross Burger, and the Fish & Chips. Decent wine, craft beer, and cocktails menu. Service is friendly, easy pace, and the servers are very familiar with both the preparation and ingredients of the dishes. Winter months offers horse drawn carriage rides through the snowy hills. The spot is perfect for cold, snowy winter weekends.

The portion are big to match the taste! The service was efficient and the ambiance was one of a kind! It was part of a tour we went on up the east coast. We arrived to the prime rib being cooked on an open flame and the smell of apple pie being baked somewhere in the kitchen. After dinner, we enjoyed a tour of the grounds with a family member of the establishment as our guide. It was a great experience!

Our first time dining here.. Our friends asked us to join them for the Fire Place Feast. The Ambience is a classic New England feel. Antiques throughout, gorgeous hardwood floors, live edge tables downstairs. The service was terrific. The waitstaff is super friendly, engaging with patrons asking for participants to help stir the seafood chowder in the big cauldron. We enjoyed a very short horse & carriage ride, which overlooked their beautiful property. Perhaps on a warmer day the ride is longer. The horses were beautiful & exceptionally groomed. The food was good, Prime Rib was rare to medium with an option for those who wanted well done. Roasted potatoes & butternut squash, rolls & finish it off with coffee & apple pie with homemade whipped cream. The appetizer portion of the fireplace feast was crackers & cheese, with mulled cider or wine. Which was located downstairs, the only downside was their wasn't enough seating for all the patrons, we ended up standing for the hour before going upstairs to our table to eat the meal.

Apple pie with fresh whipped cream

The Fireplace Feast is worth every cent. The entire experience from riding in a horse-drawn carriage to having a massive dollop of homemade whipped cream tossed expertly onto your piece of apple pie is amazing. The prime rib is perfect, and I've never had a seafood chowder quite so good. My only suggestion would be to show up before the 5:30 start time, as when we got there they had already finished the prime rib, and we only had a short 30-45 minute window to do the horse ride, enjoy a cider, and participate in the chowder preparation. When we go again we'll definitely get there earlier.

We were there after going to the Brimfield Antique Show. The place is very nice and has a lot of charm. Our waitress was fabulous not rushing us and telling us to enjoy our dinner. We started with the spinach artichoke dip and the chips were awesome (multi grain). And we're surprised with blueberry muffins before dinner. Our group had the prime rib, maple jack chicken and the surf and turf. All these entrees were delicious and cooked perfectly. We ended with the chocolate chip cookie sundae YUM! We also enjoyed cocktails from huckleberry lemonade, huckleberry pomegranate martini, and orange manhattan. This was one of our best meals of the weekend

Do you accept credit / debit cards?

Yes, we do accept credit or debit cards.

How do you make a reservation?

Hi, Vanessa! Just give us a call at 508-867-2345. :)

How do people dress? How about for Thanksgiving?

Hello, Robert! There is no dress code but we do ask that our guests dress in good taste.

Can you make a reservation for only two people or do you have to have a certain number like some other restaurants?Thank you for answering the first part of my question .Now I have to ask is the dining room in the tavern part or the main dining room?

Hi Linda! We accept reservations for our Main Dining Room for any amount of people - as a matter of fact, we appreciate them! But, if you are planning to eat in our Hexmark Tavern, we only accept reservations for 5 or more. Hope to see you soon!

Maybe with some rugs layed down it would help the noise? The name and the vision inside don't match, nothing really special to see inside. I ordered nachos as my meal last night, they looked yummy but once I started eating i realized that the chips were very toasted from the oven and crispy and any specks of cheese were dried and burned into the chips (see photo). Not until I dug to the bottom did I find any cheese. Really I could have just done that at home. I didn't send it back because my husband & daughters meals were there and they were enjoying and didn't want theirs to become cold. The Tavern is…read morein a small town, with not a lot of big business's or industry nearby, so it's primarily a transient (on a major state route) and local population venue. The town does roll-up the sidewalks at 500pm...so I know it's a tough business wherein to make a few bucks. They upped their menu options a few months back (yeah!) and have altered hours a bit, now opening at 11:30am every day. (also yeah!) The menu is a bit limited (which is not bad; work the interesting offerings, update when needed), but very good. I live local to the HT, and stop in maybe once a month for a lunch or before dinner (I avoid Friday and Saturday, as it can get very noisy in there). Today, my wife and I stopped at 300pm for their smash burgers (2 patties, lettuce, onion, tomato) on a Caprese roll. Great roll for the type of burger. I think they can source better tomatoes, as we are in the middle of a farming area, so summer and fall they should consider local produce and make the slices bigger. French fries were good, but not unique. We ordered a bowl of sweet potato fries as a starter, and they were good. Enough to take home and try with some various cocktail sauces we have. I usually get their edamame dumplings, but they were out. If you order their nachos and cheese, it is a big plate, so be warned. They have a few local craft beers, but it would be nice to see a more expansive list. I understand most locals go for the generic beer basic brands, but still...Plenty of craft brewers in Central Mass. Same with the wine; there is a local winery the next town over (shameless plug: Hardwick Winery) that is quite good, and I'm sure a bit of support both ways would be eventful. We have a local cider grower too, that could pair nicely (shameless plug: Ragged Hill) The pricing on the lunch-time specials make HT an easy option to go to. I know that server staff is tough to get, let alone retain, and I often give a bit more slack in the expectations in that area these days. Our server, Holly, also does early opening bar duty, and she made a great dry martini. And those are tough to make, and so easy to screwup. Thanks, Holly. Parking in the lot can be tough on a busy night, but, plenty of free and safe street parking within a 1-3 minute walk. The Tavern is not a romantic venue, exquisite, nor super-fine dining. It is a reliable, local, historic, restaurant to get a solid meal, a good drink, meet with friends, and relax. They do a great function offering I will say (have used it several times), and I am glad to see changing weekly-monthly specials, holiday meals, and have flights when a new liquor hits the shelf. They now have an outdoor tent for the ending summer and fall nights. So to the owners and chef, keep thinking outside the box, and you'll make this a solid start for your next 265 years.

She should have been over the moon. I'd say it wasn't technically a bad experience, but it also wasn't a good one. Also, it was right at the end of their first open mic and we knew the host personally. You'd think after seeing we knew their entertainment, she could have, at the very least, faked a smile. Kind of her loss as I'm a DJ and could have easily boosted their clientele, but I'm not going to recommend a place that makes it seem like it's a chore to wait on you. Even though she didn't know that, as someone who has also been in the restaurant industry for a large portion of my life, the very first rule of customer service is to make them feel wanted, no matter how you're feeling, and smiling at them is the easiest way to do it. Even if you're only doing it for the tips, being nice to people is one of the easiest things you can do. And being nice to others, will almost always make you feel good in return. It's a win win. As for the ambience, top notch. It's a very comfortable and relaxed atmosphere and it's not crowded like a lot of other restaurants (meaning the tables are properly spaced and you're not on top of other customers)

I had previously visited the other location, Connect Restaurant in Spencer a while ago, but that location was closed (temporary). I saw mixed reviews of this North Brookfield location, but decided to go ahead and eat here. The place offers a cozy lounge dining room, a larger back dining room, and outside patio seating in the front (small) and back (larger) of the building. The menu offerings include sandwiches, burgers, salads, pasta dishes, starters, wings, soups, seafood, steaks, chicken, and desserts. They serve Coca Cola products here. The prices here seem fair, most entrees $11.99 to $25.99 range (in 2025). They also offer daily specials and their $9.99 entree specials on Monday - Thursdays. The bar offers 6 draft beers, bottled/can beers, signature cocktails, and mocktails. Upon arrival, since the place wasn't too busy, I was able to pick where I wanted to sit and seated myself in a booth in the larger dining room, just below the live music performance section, a musician was setting up. I was given menus and specials list to look over and got an ice water. While I was waiting for my food, I was given complementary fresh baked focaccia bread with olive oil, seasonings, & cheese for dipping. Next, the Classic Popover ($3.99 plus tax) came out hot, crisp outside, soft inside & hollow with maple syrup for dipping. Next, the Chicken Madeira ($18.99 plus tax) served with two side choices came out very hot with two sauteed chicken cutlets smothered in a rich madeira sauce topped with soft melted mozzarella cheese with soft linguine and fresh green beans on the side, filling up the plate. I was also given more focaccia bread & oil dipping too. After finishing my meal, I passed on dessert and was given the check with Toast QR code, which was $24.42 with tax and before tip. Overall, the food I had all tasted pretty good once again. I would return to try other things on the menu including the steak tips and another pasta dish. The service was efficient and prompt.

The service and food quality only declined from there. We ordered a large clam strip dinner, a lobster scampi, and a sea scallop dinner. After an excessively long wait, the food finally arrived, but it was a mess. My "large" clam strip dinner was relatively small, and instead of the lobster scampi, we were brought a lobster mac and cheese. When I informed the waitress of the mistake, she took the mac and cheese back, but it took another five minutes just for her to return and officially put the "rush" order in for the scampi. By the time my wife's meal finally arrived, the rest of us were completely finished eating. To make matters worse, the scampi was a total letdown--I've never seen a scampi served with a cheese sauce and no tomatoes. It was so unappealing she couldn't even finish it. To top off a day of errors, the waitress approached us after we placed the corrected scampi order to tell us we owed more money because she had initially charged us for the wrong item. Being asked to pay an upcharge for a mistake made by staff, especially after the kitchen failed to have the meal ready with the rest of the table, is completely unacceptable. We have enjoyed coming here in the past, but after the lack of professionalism and poor food quality we've seen over our last few visits, we have lost our confidence in this restaurant.
