Clean as a whistle, safe as possible and a delight to the senses!!

To be honest, I thought Publix was a thing of the past since I had never noticed one in North Carolina. My only recollection of Publix is when I was a young man, I would go visit my grandparents who had a condo in North Miami Beach in the seventies and eighties. My grandparents lived for prune juice to keep them regular in the morning and thought that Publix had the best variety. So whenever I visited them, I would zip over to the Publix with my grandparents and all the other local seniors for the prune juice bonanza. Needless to say, up until now whenever I heard of Publix, it made me want to go to the bathroom! Lo and behold, Oak Island built a new Publix the end of last year and so I decided to strap on my KN95 and see what was inside besides prune juice while I was down at the beach As the saying goes, "You've come a long way baby!" The place is immaculate. From the moment you arrive there is plenty of signage about COVID and being safe, not to mention an attendant who personally wipes down your wagon for you as you arrive. So goes the rest of your experience there. You interested in meat? There is personnel to help you make a decision. You interested in a baked good? There is staff to show you your options. Want to be regular in the morning? They still have plenty of prune juice!! Not feeling like cooking, I headed over to their hot food counter and for less than $10 got a nice portion of pulled pork (don't tell my Rabbi), macaroni and cheese, carrots, huge portion of onion rings and a Hawaiian roll. I headed over to the bakery section and got myself a big New York style black and white cookie. Mmmm! Don't tell any of this to my trainer who thinks all I eat at the beach is fresh fish and vegetables! Even though I went to self-checkout, there was an attendant there to help make it go smoothly, and of course they offered to carry my meal to my car. I declined the help not only because I can still carry my own dinner, but I wanted to pop a couple of onion rings in my mouth the second I walked out of the store! Although prices are a little bit higher than the Food Lion down the street, one cannot underestimate what a pleasurable experience it is shopping at a Publix. The store is incredibly inviting, the staff is outstanding, the food is top quality, they have inventory that you will not find in lower-priced stores and if you shop the specials, prices are even comparable. And those onion rings!! If you are down on Oak Island and need the basics, Food Lion will work just fine, but if you are wanting something of a higher quality or just want to have a nice experience during the pandemic, walking up and down those aisles is an absolute pleasure! I headed back to my little cabin on the island and sat on my screen porch watching the birds eat out of the feeder listening to the ocean breeze and enjoying a delicious Publix dinner. Unfortunately, the onion rings did not even make it back to my house. Next time I buy a double portion!

I miss the south and what I miss the most are Publix Super Markets. The stores are always easy to shop in, the employees are always friendly and they are well stocked. In my humble opinion they have the best bakeries. Every cake I have ever had from a Publix was a 10. I ordered a cake online and it was incredibly easy. We were in and out in 5 minutes. Self checkout is never busy and there is always someone to help. This store is just the tops. And it's just as amazing as all the other Publix's I've been to in the past.

Clean publix. Not super stocked but I was able to get a few things I needed. Prices were decent which was nice since it's a beach town.

Bottom line: This Food Lion in the Holden Beach area is a good grocery store resource. Clean, with…read morereasonable grocery prices for a beach area, good selection, and both staffed/self checkout options available. Very busy place as it is nearest to the beach and at a busy intersection, so the parking lot can be crowded also. The Deets: The nearest big chain grocery store in the Holden Beach area is this Food Lion, back on the mainland in the shopping center at the first stoplight after coming back over the bridge from the beach (same on as Walgreens). The parking lot is usually pretty packed as this store/shopping center is a pretty busy one. The grocery store itself is pretty clean and has a good layout, but again usually pretty busy with customers. The grocery prices are pretty acceptable for a beach area and of course their Food Lion MVP cards for special prices are useable here. There is a pretty good selection of all grocery items, no visible lacking areas noted so far. There is a hot food bar available if you want to use for a premade meal to take home. The beer cooler is towards the front to the left as you walk in, pretty handy in a beach area obviously. There are staffed checkout lines as well as self checkout kiosks, and the self checkout area line actually moves pretty fast as well staff comes quickly when needed/screen signals them. This beach area Food Lion gets the job done and I have to say it's not bad compared to most beach area grocery stores as well as a lot of Food Lion stores in general.

I usually use Lowe's foods to go. I want to give a big shout out to Cathy and Kay, who constantly shop for my orders. Every now and then there will be something missing or something out of date, but it's when a new person is shopping. The inside offers pretty much anything you could ask for in a grocery store. Produce is fresh, deli meat is great, and everything is well stocked. On the other hand bakery items are often at times dry, and every now and then dairy products are expired. Please make sure you take things off the shelves if it is out of date or old. Bathrooms could be a little cleaner and better stocked. Checkout lines move fast, but the self checkout is ridiculous. After you scan an item it'll make you wait for about 10 seconds until it detects you have put that item in the bag, even though you did. Sometimes it will say "Please remove unscanned item from the bagging area" even though you scanned the item. That issue needs to be resolved because it gets on mine and other peoples nerves. Lowe's Foods, there's room for improvement. 3 stars here.
