No other restaurant defies your first impression more than Pueblo Viejo. It is tiny and plain looking in a tired strip mall between Mount Prospect and Des Plaines. But WOW! The food! The cheese enchiladas are the closest to perfect I've had since moving to Illinois from Oklahoma 25 years ago. The sauce alone makes the meal. And the Timpaquena dinner gives you one of those near-perfect enchiladas with a wonderfully seasoned (and huge) carne asada with grilled whole new onions and unique peppers. The best, though, is the carnitas taco with onions and cilantro. Yum. And WOW again. Order more than one and don't share. Then order some more. The service is as stellar as the food. This place is a smaller, family-owned restaurant. The service was excellent and the Mexican food was good. I ordered a chicken sopes which was good. The asada taco topped with cilantro and onions was very good, especially with the salsa verde. My husband ordered the skirt steak burrito dinner, which includes rice and refried beans. We loved the homemade tortilla chips and the choice of 4 sauces of different spice and tomato and peppers. We had horchata to drink. Tasted great and came with free refills! It has been awhile since I've had take out from this place. The food was good in the past, enchiladas, tacos, kids meals, burritos, chips and salsa. Last night I decided to try this place again as I was craving Mexican food. I ordered the steak burrito meal and chips and salsa for takeout. The food was fantastic. The steak was yummy and seasoned perfectly. The chips were light and crispy, perfect, and the salsa was flavorful with just a bit of kick. I also noticed they opened up the restaurant, took over the place next door. The atmosphere is nice so I plan to stop by next time and eat there with family and friends. read more

Nice portion sizing for the UPDATE Returned to try some other menu items and again am impressed. Very affordable and delicious. This is a small place seemingly inconspicuous, however, it packs some great flavor. Not far from where my wife works, it is a great spot to visit when she has to work late. The al pastor taco is packed with flavor while the steak tacos are a smoky, salty mix you want in a traditional taco. They do cater to those seeking non-authentic Mexican food or even chicken tenders. But, let's face it. I really don't understand why this place has such a high rating. The food here is Americanized Mexican food. It is not authentic. They even have chicken tenders and stuff like that on their menu. They first give you their house salsa and chips. The salsa was bleh. I read reviews and someone said it was the best salsa... it's quite the opposite. It was like they took a pico de gallo and blended it but I'd rather have actual pico de gallo not blended tomatoes. As for my dish, I got the steak burrito. It was pretty yummy and came with rice and beans. The beans were watered down and lacking flavor and rice was just okay. My sister got sopes she said it was good. And we tried their 4 different salsas. We were driving home from somewhere and I was just in the mood for Mexican and saw how highly rated this place was, but it was just ok... nothing to rave about. This place is right along the train tracks and can be hard to miss even with the sign, but I definitely say do stop by! It's more of a hole in the wall sort of place, so its better to just pick up rather than eat there. They provide you with chips and a mild tomato salsa in the beginning. The tacos I've had have all been good. I've gotten pastor, lengua, asada, and shrimp. The lengua is so juicy and tender, and they always give a lot. The flavor of the others have been flavorful but not too salty as well. They also give you 4 different salsa with your main order, which has been nice to mix and match. Their real winner is the burritos though. They're SOOOO big but don't feel too heavy with the amount of lettuce and tomatoes. I usually split one with my boyfriend and we're always full by the end of eating. They also have some american food like wings and hot dogs, but they're not that good. Their tortas are also a little too bready for my taste, so I say stick with the other menu items. Also, I don't know why this place has two dollar signs because everything here is pretty cheap and filling. Tacos are around $2-$3, and burritos are about $6-$7. I never spend more than $15 here for a meal for two. read more

I'm not sure why this place has so many strong ratings. I ate there yesterday and ordered carne asada because normally I love that. When the food came, it smelled like meat smells when it is raw and going bad. Tasted just the same. The refried beans are very strange. A light, light pink color and something about the flavor is off- maybe it's just extra lard or something. They had violent television on that was not appropriate for children. Positives: Chips and salsas were good. They bring four different salsas/sauces with the meal and those are good. I would have given one star but my husband did enjoy his enchiladas and they did take my food off the bill, so at least I didn't pay for what I couldn't eat. It's also one of those strange places that tries to do everything- offering hot dogs and burgers, in addition to Mexican. Yeah, I just don't get it. I'll be heading back to Los Takitos Taco Shop to get this taste out of my mouth. read more

Ordered a chicken tamale and pork tamale a steak tostada and a Monte Y Playa dinner. The girl at the counter was very knowledgeable about the menus, helped me pick through it. All the food we had for dinner was very good and a lot of it! My steak and shrimp were very nice and NOT over done. My wife liked the tostadas and the tamales. What an incredible find! A gem of a restaurant in an unpolished strip mall, Puebla Viejo dished up some good eats today. I was feeling like brekkie for dinner so I had the Huevos Mexicano with Corn Tortillas. So yummy! For those who will dine in, the complimentary chips were freshly made & the salsa mild yet tasty. A bigger surprise was the Jalapeno Crema Salsa, which I thought I would never pass these lips since leaving California. Anyone who has read previous posts of mine will know how obsessed I am with this particular condiment. Aesthetics aside, the food is muy delicioso and the service friendly. I just left Pueblo Viejo a place I visit once or twice a week after work, and at my job we order on Saturdays once a month enough food for 20 people. The young woman at the counter gets angry when you ask for an extra hot sauce and will not give a plastic bag to carry your food. Just crazy. I made the mistake of leaving a cash tip a few times and have never gotten a thank you or a plastic bag. I suppose if you have to visit the food is just ok but the help is mean and angry. This just opened and the food is fantastic! We needed a good real inexpensive Mexican food restaurant in the area! Although they were only taking cash (that's going to change) the food was excellent - my husband got carme asada and it was a great portion, well-cooked and I got tacos. My personal preference is for shredded chicken (this was pieces) but the flavor overall was great.
