My 2 star review is solely on drinks which ended up costing $45. After reviewing the menu and prices I wasn't really interested in going beyond a drink. They also don't validate parking. Restaurant is new and pretty and staff is helpful as well.
We recently went here for brunch on a Sunday. I've been for happy hours before and always enjoyed the drinks and appetizers. The brunch menu was a little different but we all split the queso to start. Super delicious! The tacos we got though were pretty bland. Our server would check on us periodically but for the most part he wasn't very attentive to our group. It also wasn't crowded at all when we went. It took a while to get our check but he did surprise our group with churros for my boyfriend's bday which was a pleasant surprise! Overall it was just an ok experience. May be back for dinner to try their entrees.
Bravo Natalie for five star service. As for the food it was delicious. Let's start with the empanadas. Chicken Tinga taco small but flavorful. Queso with tostados officially approved by the hubby. Let's keep the flavors popping with the "Coin Style Margarita" Ambiance is vibrant and tropical with options to dine in or outside. Pro-Tip do not dine between 3-5pm because you'll experience a limited dining menu. Also see the website for parking tips.
Great food and ambiance. I was in Charlotte for work and stopped for dinner with a friend. Parking can be a hassle in this location as they're several businesses and restaurants in the immediate area. We thankfully came right on time and was able to get a close park. The entrance is at the back so keep that in mind. The ambiance was dim lit with current music and was bustling with the sounds and laughs of people. The seating is a bit close, almost communal with one continual bench on one side and chairs on the other. It makes it convenient for large groups but not so convenient if you're looking for an intimate setting. I will also say seating in the main area is limited-there appears to be outdoor seating and an additional dining room but they weren't in use. We were immediately sat and provided menus to look over. Our server was very attentive and knowledgeable. I felt the pricing was a bit high but the food was good. The queso was real cheese and presented nicely. The guac was great as well. I felt things could have used a bit more salt and a little bit more spice. I used their hot sauce and some flaky sea salt which really pulled things together. All in all, it was a great experience and a restaurant I'd visit again.
The food lacked flavor but was plenty for 2. I wish the steak had more seasoning. Service was excellent and attentive The decor was Spanish and classy great for families and dates.
I've tried to get a reservation here for months, but unable! I was finally able to tag us down for this past Saturday night. Given such difficulty getting a reservation, I expected things to be amazing here. Well, here's my honest take! We arrived for an early reservation at 5:30 pm. The place was quite small, and all the tables were squeezed in together. Unless you're in a party of 3, you'll be sitting in these super-tight, half-booths or bar areas. We were seated right by the kitchen and their open hallway...with no privacy. If I knew this earlier, I would have requested to be seated outside on their patio. So definitely NOT a comfy seating environment! The menu was interesting...definitely not your typical Mexican restaurant. Price points were definitely the highest I've seen for a Mexican restaurant in Charlotte. However, the options were very limited, and frankly, I didn't find too many items tantalizing. Prior to coming here, I saw pictures of their appetizer, Queso Fundido w/ Chorizo, so I made a point to order that right away (as soon as we got seated...hoping to get that early!). I definitely stressed WITH CHORIZO with our waitress. Well! This app was nowhere in sight...even after 20 minutes. I tagged down the waitress...and I don't even think she bothered to check with the cooks! She basically went missing for another 5-10 minutes!! I then had to tag down a Manager (I think?). I don't think she even bothered to check...because I had to personally tag down our waitress again the second time...after 30 minutes! Shortly after, our Queso Fundido arrived...but WITHOUT the CHORIZO! I had to tag our waitress the third time to get the Chorizo! After all the delay and the botched order, she didn't even frickin' apologize! Just WOW. In fact, she just made this rather haughty remark about "getting it for us"...as if she's doing us a favor! What a crock!!! After a full 30-35 minutes, we finally got this fancy CHEESE appetizer (which in NO WAY should take that long!). It was good, but NOT worth that much of a wait. For our entrees, I just got their 2 Street Tacos Meal, and had to choose from just 1 of 3 unappealing sides (Papas Bravas...basically Mexican version of potatoes). No Rice. The 2 Tacos were good, but nothing extraordinary. What's more (or less??), the taco shells were really small...with somewhat of a hard crust. Very hard to eat! My husband's Chicken Al Pastor Ballotine dish was a bit better, but he was underwhelmed as well. BTW, their version of Nachos was this Huge, round tostada...not ideal for dipping or eating. We both felt we preferred the standard Nachos w/ Dip. We left scratching our heads. So much difficulty getting a reservation for this haughty, little place...and this was what we got?!? O-Kay foods at outlandish pricing, super-slow rate of food delivery, and this terrible, snooty service. Also, I did NOT like their tight, close-quarter seatings. Overall, this dining experience was just flat-out bad. Definitely not worth it...in my book. BTW, though ZERO apologies were given (Nope...the waitress felt she did us a favor!), they did manage to deduct the botched order of Queso Fundido with Chorizo off our bill. Good thing....it's THE only reason I'm dropping 2 stars instead of 1. We were actually a bit surprised by this because the Manager never bothered to follow up with us. She basically stood right next to us the whole time, so probably heard and saw us tagging down the waitress several times...and also know that we ended up with a botched order of Queso Fundido. Yet, didn't bother to follow up. Guess she felt she did her part getting it off the bill. Somehow, I don't feel too grateful??? This place reeked of pseudo upscaled Mexican, and their snooty attitude managed to totally turn us off. The ambiance, the foods, the presentation, and the service just did not live up to the hype! Beyond disappointing.
Went here for my bestie birthday brunch and 10/10!! It was so good that we were sitting there eating planning our next visit!!! I love how inclusive our waiter was nice friendly, asked about allergies and restrictions. she also advised us when we order something that conflicted with those restrictions! She was so knowledgeable about the menu. Guacamole and chip were so good guacamole was fresh and flavorful! I love that I was still kinda chunky and all the flavors really came together! Chips were also seasoned! Papas braves were potatoes in a red sauce with pickle red onions. I really don't think I would like it but it was very good! The tacos were amazing! I don't do dairy so I didn't get cheese on my tacos but they were still so good!!! Chicken was flavorful and moist! Shrimp was the perfect size and season to perfection! Steak was probably my favorite the butter they cook the steak in was so good! They weren't stingy with the meat at all! They also let me add pickle onions on all my tacos! I literally could only each half of each taco and half the potatoes! The Sunday we went they were also having a convo de mayo patio party so they had a local artist inside doing sketches! She was so night and sweet and her entire set up was so cute! It was just like the picture machine where you picked your frame, take 3 poses, she draws them and they come out just like it's out the machine! It was so cute! The experience here was so nice! The parking was hectic and parking lot was small but they do validate your parking and the inside experience made up for all of that!! Again 10/10 experience can't wait to go back!!
Parking can be not as easy so give yourself time to find parking in and around the area. Super tasty food in a cool Mexican inspired restaurant. It felt very Tulum. We came here for brunch and enjoyed our food. The dirty horchata was interesting. Queso fundido was very tasty and the tostadas that came with it where fresh! The hamachi crudo was refreshing and light with bits of guacamole. The papas con chorizo was delicious and spicy but not too spicy. It featured two eggs, chorizo, pico de gallo, crema and a few other ingredients I don't remember, all on a base of crispy potato's. The churros came with two dipping sauces: dulce de leche and a spiced chocolate sauce.
Delicious. Puerta is an upscale but casual dining with an elevated/fancy take on Mexican food. The staff is very friendly and welcoming and it's a cute spot for a date or just a fun night out. The place is a decent size but I wouldn't say good for large groups unless you make a reservation. I came for lunch and for a Mexican Caesar salad. It was very tasty. I asked for pepper and salt and that really elevated the salad. Highly recommend adding some to bring out the flavor. I added chicken and it was very tender. Nice spot I would go back to try a dinner meal.
I recently stopped by Puerta around lunchtime on a Saturday, thinking I'd grab something from their regular menu. Once I was seated, I discovered they were only offering the brunch menu at that time--maybe that's on me for not checking ahead, but I do wish the host had mentioned it at the door before seating us. A quick heads-up would've been nice! That said, I wasn't disappointed at all. The food was really solid. The enchiladas were the absolute highlight--perfectly flavorful, well-seasoned, and just delicious. The rice and beans on the side were good too, with that classic comforting taste that hits the spot. Our server was excellent--very knowledgeable and friendly. If you're in the mood for some good conversation and insightful facts about the local area, they'd be happy to chat and share. All in all, it was a positive experience, and I can't really complain. The quality of the food made up for the menu surprise. Next time, I'll definitely plan to come back and try their lunch or dinner options to see what else they have to offer.
We were not able to get a seat in the dining room, but sat at in the low lit bar area instead. The dining room was bustling and they also have an outdoor patio, but the front bar had a nice vibe of its own. A a certain time on a Friday night, a DJ started, playing a nice selection of r&b and house, which was nice Our bartender was friendly and did amazing making me a special request non alcoholic beverage. We didn't get any food, but our bartender gave us complimentary churros for our anniversary.
I celebrated my birthday at Puerta in Dec 2025! I really enjoyed it. But I want to start off by telling you yes it's a great place for a date or dinner out w friends on the weekend and not a place to come celebrate a special occasion and I will tell you why. First off the food was spectacular very flavorful of authentic Mexican food and their taco board with beef and the bone in pork were so good! The fixings we chose were rice and beans as well as the corn and all were delicious. Additionally we ordered the chicharon appetizer and empanadas and were all great. This restaurant is a classier version of the Mexican street food I would say and the prices are way higher, but the food quality, presentation and overall service compensate the price. I was hoping the back of the restaurant where there is a bar with a speakeasy vibe would have a DJ and it was one of the reasons I chose this restaurant but sadly they do not have it during the week - so big heads up FYI for you ;) ... no DJ during the week and they are not staffed enough to keep the back bar open unless it's the weekend. Then, I was not allowed to sit any minute prior to my reservation of 8 people, nor be in a smaller table while we wait for ours to be ready and wait for the other guests. Which we would be consuming, appetizers, drinks etc. but that was not an option. When time came 9:15pm as reserved, they were not ready. They had to ask the parties that were occupying our tables to move to different tables in the back so they could do ours.... So, even though they found a way to get us seated soon I don't believe it's a good experience especially someone going there for a celebration. Since we couldn't sit at the bar to wait we had to go across the street to another restaurant... (a favorite of mine Catalina) which it turned out it worked in our favor thank goodness but it's something I would keep in mind if you are planning a dinner out on a Thursday at Puerta. This portion is in case you are looking for your place to go celebrate. First, $20 per cake/ desert flat fee. Compared to competitors it's great, better than $ per slice per person. Second, and most importantly, they will not come and sing happy birthday, they will not bring or offer a complimentary desert, they will not bring a card signed by the staff or gift card... nothing, zilch, nada. I don't think it's a must per se, but it's interesting and as a former restaurant sir and now marketing director I have lots to say about it and if I may my advise to Puerta is pick something to make your special guest feel special on their day, it will go a long way and elevate the whole experience more than you know. I would have given a 5 star if it wasn't for the many inconveniences that night, which I know things happen but you know what they say....? The first impression always lasts.

Very trendy bar with a live DJ at Sunday brunch. Prices are relative to DC, my hometown but this Carijillo, similar to an espresso martini, is delicious! Great service from the female bartender with the short curly red hair! The host was very accommodating in trying to help move umbrellas outside on the patio to block the sun from hitting us directly. Our server was not very attentive but he may have been really busy because it was crowded. We waited a while for everything. We weren't very bothered by it because we were catching up after not having seen each other in years. I ordered the carne asada and huevos. The entire dish was smothered in the salsa roja, even the potatoes. I was not a fan of the hash, it was very dry and a little difficult to swallow even with all the salsa on it. The steak and eggs were ok though. Another friend who lives in the area recommended this place. I would definitely return for the drinks and vibes! read more

The service was AMAZING!! The environment was beautiful! The music wasn't too loud, it was just right. Our waiter was so cool and on top of everything. Also he got us a free dessert for our 1st anniversary and a sweet card signed by the restaurant. Also, there was no wait! I've been here twice so far, once for brunch another time for dinner. Brunch I wasn't too impressed by, it was good but forgettable. Dinner on the other hand, absolutely delicious!! Got 'Para La Mesa' (for the table) had the beef cheek barbacoa and side of street corn. The barbacoa was cooked to perfection and seasoned wonderfully. It came with traditional street taco accompaniments and more such as onions and cilantro, lime, Oaxaca cheese, pickled onions, and a chili oil. The street corn was delicious as well had that with tortillas as well as put it on a few tacos. Can't remember the cocktail I had but it had mezcal and coconut. I'm not a mezcal fan but it was pretty good. The service was great as well, our server was very friendly and helpful. We've been wanting to try Puerta and so glad we finally did! You enter through a back door into a dimly lit bar with a DJ and a few tables. We moved to the front room with a larger bar, more lighting, and a patio. We sat at the bar and Chase was our bartender. It was a lively atmosphere and good ambiance. Chase was great and very knowledgeable of the various tequilas. Food was great, salsas were tasty, and staff were friendly. Definitely putting this in our rotation! read more

Thinking about where to go on a Friday night, I recalled an upscale Mexican restaurant that had amazing chips and queso, artisanal everything, and nuanced cocktails. That's where I wanted to go, but as I tried to remember the name, it struck me that I was thinking of Luna, a Michelin starred cantina in San Jose, CA. We definitely weren't going there on 3-hours notice. The search was on for a Charlotte stand-in and Puerta was the winner. Atmosphere- rustic, elegant, sexy. Real hand towels in the bathroom and anything else you might need. Service- attentive but not overly, friendly, and willing to help with decisions. And the absolute star was the food. We had queso with chorizo, tacos, and this amazing open face tortilla dish that was as delicious as it was beautiful. We rounded out the evening with churros and cocktails. When we're wanting upscale Mexican, Puerta will be our go-to from here forward. If you want to give it a run, I'd suggest a reservation. We ate in the bar, which was fine, but I'd bet a table would have been even nicer. read more

A beautiful spot indoors with two main dining areas; one space was cozier and more intimate with the other being larger and more decorative. The bar was also quite the sight! I ordered the enchiladas and found the chicken to be quite dry, but the cream helped. My friend and I agreed that the rice was fairly stiff and dry; the refried bean portions were also rather conservative. Churros for dessert were a nice finish, but nothing out of the ordinary! I was a fan of the caramel sauce over the spiced chocolate. Our waitress, Natalie (sp) was very kind and attentive. I've been to Puerta once before just for drinks, and we loved the vibe. The margs are tasty (the spicy one is VERY spicy, just a heads up!) and the chips & dip trio is yummy. I went back a few weeks ago for brunch, and while I had a good experience, it just wasn't "great." The service was unfortunately very slow (there were three of us, and we were in there for more than 2 hours). The guac was unexpectedly overly spicy (good to me, but just a bit spicier than my mom could handle), and the tacos were fine, but nothing special. The QUESO, however - that was to die for. Our kind waitress did bring us some churros con chocolate on the house, which was awesome of her, but from the time she said she was going to do that to when she actually brought them out, it was at least 30 minutes (and by that point we were just kind of ready to go home). I will come back and will try some new things on their menu - I just feel like for what you pay, Puerta isn't overly impressive. read more

Had a chance to make it over for brunch and parking is really crazy, but there is a parking deck across the street when all else fails. I ordered the lamb empanadas, avocado tostada, and breakfast quesadillas and everything was just ok overall and I was disappointed with the food, not sure if I just ordered the wrong things or what. read more

Service: the waiter was great! He was responsible for a number of tables so the service was a little bit delayed but it was not his fault. Food: the food was amazing! Perfectly cooked and seasoned very well. We had the pork belly, Mexican caesar salad, queso and the 1/2 portion of the para la mesa. I recommend getting the full para la mesa for two people only because the 1/2 seemed to be enough for just one. Ambiance: decor was nice and simple and on point with the theme. Seating is a litte tight, so be prepared to be ok with both neighbors listening in or joining in on your conversation possibly lol. Will try the outdoor seating next time because it was a little more spacious. Overall we really enjoyed this restaurant and highly recommend. We'll definitely be back. read more
What a cute space!! I love the lounge area and bar in the front when you walk in. Then you can follow the hall to the dining area with the main bar that also leads to their patio space. I was told they have a live DJ some nights in the front lounge space which I definitely plan on going back to check that out! (Check online for the DJ schedule) My friends and I came here on a Monday night which was surprisingly busy and were seated at the bar. The space is kind of small so I definitely recommend making a reservation in advance. Mondays they have half off mezcal neat pours, which they call Mezcal Monday. The bar staff were so kind and accommodating. I even got to taste some of the mezcals before choosing. The Yucatán cocktail was deliciously refreshing and perfect as a chaser for my neat pour of Mezcal. Now let move on to the most important part, food!! I can never pass up empanadas so of course I opted for the chicken tinga empanadas. My wife had the lamb empanadas and loved them and our friend had one of each! What a great starter! Yum!! For dinner we all opted for the BYO Chimichanga all with different meat options. I had chicken tinga because it was so good in the empanadas, my friend had the al pastor and my wife had shrimp. No matter tge choice they were all fresh and yummy!!! I'm making puerta one of my new favorite spots!! Can't wait to return!! read more
Puerta is one of our go-to places in Charlotte. I think my favorite dish is the Lamb Birria Empanadas, but everything is great. Lots of Mezcals and Tequilas to sample too, my recommendation is to get 4 half pours of Mezcal and create your own flight. Puerta - I see Mezcal and Tequila flights at other upscale Mexican places and always order them! You should def feature this on your menu and you'll see liquor sales go up. read more

My brother took me here after him recommended that it was a good spot. And it was. Inside, there's not much seating, however they do have 2 bars. One at the waiting area and then on in the main dining room. There's a pretty big bar there, along with tables. Seating is spacious, but be prepared to be close to other tables. Service wise during my visit was wonderful (I sat at the bar). Starting with the appetizers, we had the: - Guacamole, which was pretty awesome. It was a good portion size. - Ceviche was up next, and that was super savory and well seasoned. - Pork Belly Chicharron is those who love fried Pork Belly. It goes really well with alcohol. The April's special menu of the Tuna Tostada was meh. I wouldn't recommend it if you see on the menu. It was just very sauce heavy and the essence of the tuna was just completely lost under all the sauce. Entree: - Chipotle Short Rib was great! super saucy, but the beans that it laid on was a good balance to the really well seasoned short rib. There was a little of heat that builds on each bite of the rib, however overall it paired well. I'm eyeing the pork shank next time I'm coming here if they still have it on the menu. I'm positive that I will be coming here. One thing to note is that reservations is highly recommended as there was a line already forming at the time of opening. read more

Had a great girls night out at Puerta last night! Let me first start by saying this place has a super cute vibe. At first we were seated in the "lounge" area which was nice, but we asked to be moved to the main Resturant area and I was very happy they had space for us at the bar. The main Resturant is where the vibe is! I don't know who had the aux that night but baby they were on point with the R&B selection which totally fueled the overall energy of the evening. We had a wonderful bartender (shout out to Chase!) who was very knowledgeable and patient with us as we slowly mulled over our menu selections. After all it was girls night and we were enjoying each other's company and swapping stories! Thank goodness Chase didn't seem the least bit bothered! We went on a Monday evening and it was very lively with groups coming in and out. Their website suggests that you have a reservation and I believe it! It was very busy for a Monday night. Also, unbeknownst to us Monday is "shot day" as all tequila shots are 1/2 off. Sweet! I ordered a slightly more expensive tequila than I normally would to take full advantage of "shot day"! All three of us ordered various empanadas as starters, thanks to Chase we learned you can mix and match your order if desired. I got the lamb empanadas and I was very happy about that! As fate would have it we also all ordered the Chimichanga as our meal. I got mine with shrimp, though I was very please with my choice, next time I'll try the chicken. It was so big none of us could finish it, but thanks to my air fryer it made an excellent lunch the next day. I will definitely be coming back to this place soon, as there are so many things on the menu I didn't get to try this first go round. Definitely recommend checking this spot out. When it gets warmer the patio will be a nice addition to the overall vibe as well. read more
I've wanted to check out Puerta for a while now, and I finally had the opportunity to go. It was easy to grab a seat at the bar, and the service was impeccable - everybody was looking out for us. They were courteous enough to let me samples the frozen mixed drink before deciding which cocktail I wanted to order. They even put tajin in the rim of the mini glass! So cute and thorough. We started with delicious chips, queso and guacamole. Then, I ordered the chicken tinga empanadas and a crispy fish taco. Amazing all around. I love the aesthetic and the vibes at Puerta. Now, there are two bars and the one closest to the 7th Street side of the restaurant has the best lighting and views so keep that in mind. Parking is very limited with some spaces in the back and then more in a very busy and competitive plaza. You may have to find parking on a nearby street and walk or take a ride share. But, it's well worth it. read more

Does coming here twice in a week tell you enough?! Might I add we originally came for drinks the first time and were sat in their front lounge and bar area that was absolutely chic with low tables paired with the cocktail seats adjacent at the bar and before leaving decided to grab a small bite to take home. We ordered the chicken tinga tacos and potato bravas taco and even after getting home they were still delicious. Tacos were street style and priced great but filled with tinder juicy meat and potatoes weren't too spicy for my Mom to enjoy - can you guess what she requested when we returned the second time? Speaking of - we came back a week later, this time we sat at the bar in their dining room area which is decorated so cute with twinkly lights and a brick wall full of mezcal and tequila to adorn the bar. This time I tried their chimichanga and they were able to accommodate my dairy allergy without any issues and it was soooo good. Fiancée ordered the carne asada tacos and we all shared guacamole which we ordered a second portion of - yes it's that good. And don't get me started on the drinks (highly recommend the tequila old fashion) - again we came twice in a week yall so please don't hesitate. Looking forward to next time!! I really enjoyed my experience at Puerta on a Sunday evening. We sat at the bar and the servers were so kind. The decor is really cute on the inside and gives a south west vibe on the inside. Whoever is on the aux also absolutely understood the assignments! r and b and newish music vibes. We had the salsas, fish tacos, and chicken empanadas and a few cocktails. Everything tasted absolutely delicious. I really enjoyed the salsa sampler and I thought the tacos were well balanced with flavor. They also give churros with a candle for birthdays. Food was very good. The Guac was fresh and had good flavor. The tacos were good and the rice and beans were very solid. It's also a cute place and has a lovely patio we can enjoyed on a sunny day. The margarita was delicious as well. The only complaint was the service was very slow. read more
Vibrant and flavorful food. I love Chilaquiles when I visit Mexico and this dish had all the flavors with a twist! Love the food and the staff was very friendly and got us seated quickly. There is parking around back of the building which is also the entrance but the lot is on the smaller side. Made a reservation for our Anniversary and couldn't be more happier with our experience. Upon entering we were greeted by the friendly staff, our table wasn't quite ready but that's okay because we grabbed some flights at the bar. The bartenders were amazing, had a great conversion with us and even described the unique difference between each Mezcal we ordered, It was immediately a vibe. The Mezcal Espadin Flight is a must try if you want an authentic and unique tequila tasting. Old Fashioned paired very well with everything. Th Yucatan cocktail was light, refreshing and has a decent amount of mezcal and agave. We ordered the Tuesday Special-Para La Mesa with Cochinita Pibil which was packed with flavor and Wagyu Flat Iron Steak cooked to perfection. Can't go wrong with the Very well seasoned Street corn and fresh Guacamole as sides. We ended the night with a Quatro Leches Cake which is by far the best dessert I've ever had at a restaurant. It's rich, creamy and the toasted meringue is top notch. Overall, highly recommend this place, great service, wonderful atmosphere and mouthwatering cuisine . read more
