We absolutely love Puerto Vallarta! This is definitely our go-to Mexican restaurant in Yelm, and we find ourselves coming back at least once or twice a month. The thing that really sold us the first time we went was our server. He was absolutely amazing, and we love getting him whenever we come in. Honestly, the service here has been great every time. All of the servers and the kids who work here are so friendly and attentive, and I have never been treated badly even once. And the homemade flour tortillas!!! They come out hot and fresh, and they are seriously to die for. I cannot get enough of their queso dip with those tortillas. It is probably my favorite thing there. Their salsa is also wonderful. I love the birria and the chile rellenos, and Sean always gets the chicken fajitas. Everything we've had has been really good. The beer can be hit or miss sometimes, and we have occasionally had to send one back and try something else, but they are always cold and refreshing once we get the right one. We go here for date nights, take friends, meet family there, and sometimes just stop in because we're craving Mexican food. It's just a really great environment and a place where we always enjoy ourselves. We absolutely love Puerto Vallarta and will definitely keep coming back. I see they cleaned up the entrance which had weeds and debris, broken tiles from their building strewn all over the entry making it so unwelcoming. You have a beautiful restaurant but it got ugly. Today I had lunch and it was ok. But I asked for shredded chicken and got beef, the taco shell was wet and inedible, the waiter dropped our drinks and food and never returned. The most disappointing meal I have had in a very long time. Came hungry from hiking Rainier, and there was not a single enjoyable ingredient in my dish, nor my family's dishes. Meat and rice was bland. To make things worse, the prices were exorbitant! I mean come on, $25 burritos? Charging 50 cents for mints at the register, and charging for more tortilla chips. I get times are tough, but at least provide the people a reason to come back. I wish I saw the japanese restaurant down the street, or even the McDonald's on my drive back. Ambiance is nice, came on a Friday at 6 PM. I ordered tamales and was disappointed. Very small thin layer of meat. A large portion of it was just masa. Husband and I just moved to the area so thought we would try this place out. We were seated very quicklY (it was mid-week). There was a good amount of people in the restaurant, but it wasn't packed. Our waitress was very nice. We just came in for a quick snack so my husband ordered a beer and then we got the queso dip. We also go the chips and salsa that came before our meal. Our dip came out fairly quickly. The queso dip was okay and it came in a tostada bowl and was served with tortilla roll-ups, which I have never seen served with queso before. They might be great for kids, but I think preferred dipping my chips in the queso. We spoke to one of the managers and she was very personable and nice. She said this Puerto Vallarta has had the same owner for years, so it hasn't changed hands which keeps things consistent. We found out that the 1st Friday of the month is karaoke night in the bar. Its up to you if you want to hear the local talent :) ! Looks like they also have happy hour tacos during the lunch hour. I would like to check back when we try their actual dinner. This is generic Mexican food at its finest. Food was bland, no seasoning, rice had no flavor, beans tasted like they had been burning in a pot for 18 hours. I'm not usually this guy either, but our waitress seemed like she hated her job. There was a super weird vibe in the place too. Ya know in movies when like a robbery is going down and then someone walks in and the robbers are all like play it cool and we won't hurt anybody, so everybody just pretends to so their job and the oblivious person walks out non- the-wiser. Sadly this is the worst Puerto Vallarta we've ever been too. The queso was just a 1/4" of grease on the top, almost inedible. The beef taquitos were trash, in fact they were identical to the frozen section ones at the grocery store except they were burnt... this is not a reflection of the server by any means. I know its hard to find good Mexican food in Washington. But it was even worse in YELM. I grew up Puerto Vallarta restaurants so i thought. Lets give it a shot. Should have started easy. Yet went with a standard Arroz con pollo. This was the most bland, basic ever. Taste and looked they emptied a can of Campbell's chunky chicken soup over some white rice, then added some pace salsa. Arroz con pollo should be large pieces of chicken, with a gravy or thick sauce and rice and mushrooms with cheese. This was no sauce. You can see in the pictures. Wife meal was so bland she had to add salsa and flavoring and only ate half. $60 meal. SO DISAPPOINTED! read more

1. Food was excessively SALTY. There was way too much salt on our cheese sticks and my carne asada. It was almost inedible because salt was the instant and overwhelming "flavor" of these items. 2. Waitstaff or kitchen staff were chatting with each other VERY loudly behind our booth. Just because you're behind a half-wall doesn't mean that your noise is being blocked from customers less than 5 - 7 feet away. 3. Drinks were pretty weak. Both of my drinks tasted alcohol-free. 4. All of the entrees, drinks and appetizers were served promptly and at the PERFECT temperatures. My carne asada was cooked to perfection - except for the excessive salt! 5. Waitstaff and serving staff were extremely courteous, fast and helpful. Kudos to the young male waiter who smiled ALL the time and was eager to help us. 6. The prices were higher than expected. Out-the-door for 2 people with drinks and tip was over $120. 7. The bench seats are due to be replaced. Bottom line, management is at fault for the above issues. Management isn't catching obvious issues that can be resolved very quickly. Staff chatting between themselves loudly near the customers - that's an easy fix. Food being served too salty - that's also a very easy fix. Weak drinks? At the prices we paid I would have expected stronger drinks. read more

My family and I have been trying to go out and try different places to eat around Yelm at least once a week, and so far this may have been one of my least favorite. Upon entering around 6:15 PM during the week we were surprised to stand at the front waiting to be welcomed or seated for close to 15 minutes, even though we were passed by multiple employees. When we were finally seated it took about another 10 minutes for our server to come over and get our drink order. While he was there we ordered the queso dip as an appetizer. It took about another 10 minutes for him to come back with our drinks for our food order. What's interesting is even though it took so long to order everything after our appetizer, everything ended up coming out together. The best part of my meal was the queso dip. I had the shrimp tacos which were lacking in shrimp and flavor, and my rice definitely sat under a heat lap for most of the day. It was the hardest rice I've ever tried to eat. My wife did like her carne asada with double beans, and my daughter said the cheese roll up wasn't bad. I was pretty disappointed in this place for the lack of quality in food and service. read more

The prices are OUTRAGEOUS for the small portions and underwhelming food. Ordered a burrito combo and they only put meat in the burrito, nothing more. The burrito is topped with enchilada sauce (unsure why) and the beans were watery while the rice tasted like a heated pack of Bens instant rice... The beef burrito was overflowing with grease! The meal costed about $22... Lastly, the chips and salsa came "free" with 50 cent refills but they give you a salsa bowl size worth of chips. The best thing I ate here was the salsa. The queso dip was oily on top then dried up in a matter of 2 minutes, and they hardly give you any for the $12 extra it costs... it feels like you pay that much because they include steamed rolled up and cut up tortilla on the side, but I honestly could have gone without it. They need to lower prices or improve the quality, and for heaven's sake they need to give more queso for $12 or lower the price and stop serving it with those damp tortillas! The service was okay at best, the lady serving only came by twice and decided to do silverware behind our table despite the restaurant being nearly empty which felt invasive and nosy. I don't know how there are ANY bad reviews on this place. My husband and I moved to Yelm from Texas and thought no way we'd find good Mexican food up North. After our first visit at Puerto Vallarta however, this became one of my favorite ones I've ever been to!!! I would take the area in back with the door that goes to the play area and put a TV in there with a cartoon or a kids video. Great quality ingredients that were cooked perfectly. Most often than not, chicken enchiladas are made with tiny pieces of chicken that are greasy; not here! The enchilada was filled with fresh, perfectly cooked chicken. The portion sizes were enormous. The vegetables in the fajitas were crispy and not soggy with too much oil. This was my first time at the restaurant The staff was super friendly and the food was great! Margaritas are on point (strawberry). It was pretty empty when we arrived around 4pm but, quickly filled within the hour for a Saturday! We enjoyed the ambiance and chips/salsa however when it came time for our check, it felt like it took forever. The staff quickly became overwhelmed and were running around quite a bit. I have seen less than stellar reviews and I have to say that was not our experience. We have been here twice and the food was very good and service very good each time. Yesterday after a hard day of Viking (the Norse West Viking Festival, second weekend of September in Cochrane Memorial Park, a lot of fun. If you've never Viked, you should), vending, and disassembling and packing our equipment and wares we stopped at Puerto Vallarta for dinner. Thank Freya we saw the back of the menu: behold the Seniors' Menu. Limited choice, but oh myyyyyy...! My wife's Taco Salad was small and very tasty; exactly what she wanted. My Senior Fajita Burrito was also today's breakfast. It literally was only slightly smaller than a trade-size paperback book. Exceptionally delicious. Shout out and extra kudos to Trinity, our indefatigueable, knowledgable, perfect server. It felt as if she has known us forever, was delighted at the reunion, and happy to help us.
