This place is decent if all you need to is to get the current month's issue of a comic and nothing more. Other than that, the place is not super inviting. I've been to other comic book stores in the past and they all have some type of decor or make it loud and proud that they have cool "geek" paraphernalia but this place always looks like a storage facility or a Borders right before they closed down. I've been coming here on and off for the past 7 years but I will definitely never be returning to pulp fiction again. I went in last night to pick up a few new issues and within the first minute I was in the store the older dude who works here with the blue hair was talking about what a dumbass this other customer was for asking a question regarding ticket pricing. Obviously, working retail you deal with folks you don't want to deal with all the time but the way he was going about it totally killed my vibe. I usually try and go in and out of this shop as quickly as possible now so I don't have to interact with the staff. Usually rude if they decided to give you attention, but helpful or nice once in a blue moon. Anyway, my friend brought up the situation as I was purchasing my comics - just saying that they could be more conscious of the way they were speaking or just to wait until no customers were in the store to talk shit. The lady was nice about it, though still deflective, mostly just saying 'yeah you know how retail is, but our customers don't care' (...um? were we not customers who obviously cared?) but the older dude chimed in - after finally taking out his head phones and ignoring us the entire time, even when I tried to ask a question - with an automatically defensive "what's the problem?". My friend reiterates what she just said, that it was uncomfortable for us, and he automatically starts acting like A CHILD!! You are a grown ass man, what is wrong with you!!!! He just starts shaking his head and raising his voice "PFF WHATEVER!! IF THE SHOE FITS! WHY ARE YOU MAKING SUCH A BIG DEAL OVER THIS!" Which I thought was kind of hilarious since he was the one literally throwing a tantrum over some constructive feedback from CUSTOMERS! As we were walking out, the lady who was working puts her hand up and says something along the lines of trying to calm him down. Seriously? This was so ridiculous, y'all. I came down to Long Beach on vacation San Jose. Dropped by this shop and dug in dollar bin and found some key books . The owner greeted everyone walked in the door, so I don't know what negative review is all about. I think the shop is decent and organized. Had short pleasant conversation with the owner during check out. Only thing I'd recommend the owner is not to put price tag sticker on the back of dollar book. Collector like me are anal about that. Decided to finally check this place out after buying from them at various conventions. Their graphic novels are priced 40% off MSRP (for Marvel and DC graphic novels at least). They have an amazing selection of GN throughout the store. Their comics selection on the other hand was so-so but in all fairness I mainly went to check out the GN and didn't pay much attention to their comics on display. The staff didn't make much of an impact as far as customer service goes. The guys didn't even acknowledge my friend and I but the girl behind the register was at least nice. She said hi and asked my friend if he needed help finding anything. I've had better interactions at another comic shop I regularly visit. Grabbed the new release of Hawkeye for a friend here. Really comfortable little store with a great selection. I'm more of the graphic novels kind of gal (think Maus, Blankets, and Sandman, etc) while my friend is a huge DC and Marvel kid, and my other friend isn't much of a comics person at all, and all three of us found things to keep us interested and in the store for a lot longer than expected. Hopefully next time I'll have a bigger spending budget, because they were friendly but let you do your own browsing in your own time, which is worth my patronage any day. :) read more

I visited this location from Burbank after several of my local shops didn't have the book I wanted. They do have a good selection, however, you can find better discounts on most books elsewhere. The layout is a mess and if you're in a hurry don't bother. You could easily ask the employees, but thats why I gave them such a low review. I called in advance for a certain book and was told they have it in stock. After an hour of driving, I was taken to the back room and shown the incorrect book. I was told that I asked for that book, which is absurd, why and how would I ask for a book I didn't know existed. They guy was a total jerk and didn't offer any remedy to the problem or an apology for not only being wrong, but rude and incompetent. I take my books very seriously and I have great relationships with my local shops in Sherman Oaks and Hollywood areas. Terrible service, good selection, ok discounts. read more

This is a great place to get your weekly fix of comics. The guys here are very engaging and helpful. You can create a weekly pull list, and they have lots of cheap $1 comics for kids. My go to shop for my comics. Yeah customer service could be a little better but you can't beat their deals and all the time graphic novels sale. Up to 40% off trades? Oh man that's incredible. Also new comics aren't always in the greatest conditions, more specifically the spines' corners. I mean I'm sure they don't all come out of the box like that. Don't know what's going on there, I just look for the best copy and I'm ok. I don't need a CGC 9.8/9.9 type book but come on guys, handle the comics better when unboxing them. Like a lot of reviews, the customer service lacks. I've been here twice. Customer service was bad the first time, better the second. Not sure if I caught the guy on a bad day, but he was a jerk to me my first time going. But I went back because the prices are great. 40% off DC and Marvel every day. Their selection of New 52 TPB is extensive as well. Allegedly they take trade-ins everyday but Tuesdays. I showed up on a Saturday and was told they don't do them, but was told that I could call another day to ask. So I just eBayed what I had. read more

I love this place! Even though I don't live in Long Beach anymore I'll still make the trip over to come here. The guy that runs the store is super nice and is always willing to help out. He's one of the nicest guys you'll ever get to talk to at a comic book store! All the graphic novels and newer manga are 20% off. They also have a ton of older series of manga for 75% off the cover price. I was able to obtain Fruits Basket for $4.99 each. They also have a ton of comics, like Wanted, that I couldn't find at Borders or Barnes & Nobles. The store is clean and organized as well. You won't be disappointed making the trip over to Pulp Fiction. I highly recommend coming here before any other comic book store. Support this place!! read more

this review is not recent because this is based on my experience in 06/07 (or when Naruto first came out in japan). I don't really care much for comics but I do like manga and they had them there. The manga was reasonably priced but they sold bootlegged anime from china at inflated prices. In the end I wouldn't come here again even I'm in the area. read more

Surely enough when I got here they had all the issues I'm missing, not only that but they also had the paperbacks I've waiting for. This place is definitely a marvel comic shop with all the marvel comics all over the shop. 30-40% off Graphic Novel prizes. The whole experience would feel a little cheap if the guy behind the counter wasn't an overweight, balding, condescending, know-it-all. I'll admit that I've had those moments with the owner but one shouldn't be picky about customer service here, the guy knows his shit. I have never received a bad recommendation from him and he always comments about the titles I buy, for better or worse. So customer service aside, this place is the perfect place to pick up your weeklies or to browse the trade paperbacks casually. The graphic novels/trade paperbacks are all marked down from the cover price up to 50% (depending on the publisher of the title) but be aware that you only get the full discount if you PAY IN CASH. The used section is marked down even more and it's always vast and full of good finds and sometimes entire runs of a book. The store is neat and well set up which makes browsing pretty simple and it doesn't smell like ass (which must be acknowledged at a comic book store). They don't have a restroom but the bar two doors down does so I won't even complain about that. I typically compare prices with Amazon while I shop and more often then not the prices usually match, and sometimes beat, what I can find online. This shop remains the only place I buy my comics...and no, Frank and Sons is not cheaper. read more

Its cross street is Clark Avenue & Atherton Street. Pulp Fiction is located on Clark Avenue and is smack dab in the middle of the plaza between a liquor store and a Jiu-Jitsu gym. There's only 3 comic stores that I know of around my area and I believe this one is best suited for me. I just recently got into graphic novels and found that this one has the best deals for them. My Marvel graphic novels are always 40% off retail price whether a new release or an old issue. This place is super clean and amazingly organized. I love how they arrange their stuff because it makes it very easy to find what you're looking for. If you don't see the book you want you can ask the guys to look up your request and if they don't have it then they will order some more. I've done that before and they told me to come back a few weeks later and when I did, there it was. I've been coming here for about a year now and I don't plan on going anywhere else to buy my graphic novels. If you're more into individual comic books then you may want to try another place because though Pulp Fiction do sell them it may not be a large selection compared to other places. DEFINITELY check out their Clearance Section! I was about to buy a new Astonishing Spider-Man & Wolverine book, but lucked out and found a new one also in clearance for even less! It's already 40% off, but a couple MORE dollars off since it's in clearance so you can say I probably had about 60%-70% off. Amazing. If you're strictly a graphic novel guy like me then this would be worth checking out because the selection is humongous. P.S.
