I drive all the way from Tustin for this place. Their Trade Paperback post is second to none. They moved, though i like their former place way better, its still good. Knowledgeable staff, if a bit on the quiet side, and crazy discounts on new trades as well. I wish their trade appraiser was there more often but other than that, whats not to love? read more

This place has great prices, ton of product and specials all of the time. I was a weekly collector from 2004 to 2010. And this place was my go to place comics all of those years. I have a pull a with one tittile. I swear the staff has lecture me on I can't use my credit card for orders under $6, to no I can't give you a plastic bag for your purchase and today too make sure you pickle your pool. I had to explain to the clerk that my pool is only one title. And that one title has ended. So no need to explain to me or lecture me about picking up my pull because I don't really have a pull. It's just that they act like the police I don't get it and I really don't need to what's other places go to whenever I get an itch to read some comics read more

Extremely rude customer service. My son walked into the store, actually his second time and the owner stated that he had to be accompanied by an adult. There are no signs posted anywhere and when I approached the cashier and asked about the policy, he said he didn't know it. I also asked what age could they shop alone and he said 16, which is not an adult. The "owner" was absolutely silent. I refused to allow my son to purchase anything from this store. When we shopped there once before, there were several white young males shopping alone in the store and they were not accompanied by an adult. Racist and uncalled for. read more

I'm not a big comic reader but recently me and my wife started reading Saga. I went to Pulp Fiction to find something new for us to read together. The gentleman who helped me was informative and unhurried. He has a passion for this stuff! He recommended other books by the same author and went into some detail. I decided on Y The Last Man. I had other questions regarding children's section, etc. All my questions were addressed with much attention. I'll be coming back. Oh, and they're prices are super reasonable. read more

To be honest, I'm shocked that Pulp Fiction is rated better than Amazing. I've found my experiences at this shop to be consistently mediocre and at times harried. I do agree that the guy who's almost always there seems to be constantly in your face, but I think that's his attempt at charisma and customer service, which truthfully Amazing lacks these days. Prices are fairly decent on items like manga sets. If the offer's still going, you would be able to get a free comic of your choice from their back issue bin with the purchase of a new one. I was a bit put off when I came on the fateful day Amazing Spider-Man #583 came out, though. We walk in and the owner's offering his last few copies behind the counter for $90 each. High. Way. Robbery. I mean, I get it. He's got the right to sell it for what he wants, but he seriously got them from Marvel for less than the cover price. That whole mess brought back frightful memories of the mid-'90s when comics almost died off due to speculation buying and selling of comics for astronomic prices. On Free Comic Book Day, you have your choice of ONE comic and it's usually got a flyer stapled to the cover. I know it's free and all, but that just irks the hell out of me. read more

I'm not even going to try to be nice. These guys don't deserve the respect the don't give to their customers. Yes, they have a large selection of trades, and yes, they've exceptionally cheap, but that doesn't excuse the harshly rude behavior from the employees in this store. After having visited this store numerous times over the past few years, I can tell you with confidence this behavior is consistent. They're extremely rude. They don't greet you, they don't talk to you, they don't ask if they can help you find anything, they don't try to give you recommendations, they get mad at you if you ask them questions, and they don't want you looking through their books. I was just there today with some friends and was nearly yelled at for sitting on the floor to look at the bottom shelf of books (which was not a foot above the ground; seriously, Pulp Fiction.. why don't you move your shelves up a few notches so it's not painful to look through them?). They very sternly told my friend who is new to comics and is looking for something that looks good to him to not "read" the books, even though he was just expressing his curiosity. The worst thing that happened today was, while I was searching through their DC paperbacks (and building quite a stack), I noticed a longbox sitting against the stockroom door that had some books I was interested in. I asked the employee nearby if they were for sale, to which he shortly replied, "No". So I asked, "Why not?". This dude sighed at me and told me, "Because they're not priced yet, alright?" I told him I was interested in buying the book laying on top, a paperback of JLA, and he got even more frustrated and told me that the books weren't for sale. While walking back to his station, he very needlessly and annoyingly whipped around, gave me a look of attitude, and asked "Do you have any OTHER questions?" Look. I get that the books aren't priced yet. BUT I'M TRYING TO BUY THEM. Don't get frustrated with me because you don't like answering questions. For those out of the comic game, let me explain to you that this happened on a Wednesday of all days. Wednesdays are the days new comic books come out, and are likely to bring in the most business. Wednesdays are not the days to be rude to customers interested in your product. I sincerely do not recommend you visit this shop unless you're desperate to save some money, and even then, expect to be treated as subhuman. If I could be more vulgar about Pulp Fiction while saving face, I would. I honestly, honestly would. If you want good savings and good customer service, try some online retailers. Honestly, I can understand the reviews that seem to feel the customer service could be lacking, they weren't the warmest ( which isn't to say they were at all hostile, just felt like they weren't psyched to be there, which is fine). But it's made pretty much irrelevant but what they have to offer. As they say in their description, it really is a one-stop shop. They have your weekly comics wall, but the real treasure is their graphic novel section. The deals are so good I thought they were having a going-out-of-business sale. There's two or three isles of $4 trade paperbacks that are very well stocked (f.e. you can buy almost entire runs of a series for only 4-5 dollars per book) and for the most part in like-new condition. The new trades are 30% off! Even the dollar bin was a goldmine. I picked up like 20-30 consecutive issues of Preacher, and some rare/out-of-print first issue comics in near mint condition with posters/trading cards included in the bag & board. Those issues alone could cover what I spent at the store (around $70 for 3-4 traded and some 30-40 dollar bin gems) if I chose to resell them. Between this and the location in Culver City, there's not really any reason for me to shop elsewhere other than for the fun of a new shop and convenience distance wise. But if you live in Long Beach you have every reason to check this place out! read more

First visit - Wife stops by and asks if they have any shirts (weekend of comicCon and trying to get our kids into comics). Guy behind counter scoffs and says something to the effect of "we don't do that here". Second visit - this weekend during free comic book day. Someone behind the counter very loudly admonishing someone over the phone for the way they placed their phone order. Terribly condescending. This place is a comic store stereotype. If you feel like belonging to an exclusive group of people who appreciate graphic novels on a fundamental level, and hate how Walking Dead, Warner Brothers and Disney have produced an onrush of superficial fans, then this is your place. If you just want to buy comic books (or related items) and be approached by employees who understand that everyone is at a different stage in their relationship with comics, then go to Amazingcomics, about a five minute drive away. I had to sign up for Yelp just so I could share my opinion about this store, that's how bad it is. Pulp Fiction comics has an amazing selection of comic books and graphic novels, they really do. They also have all graphic novels on sale from 20% to 40% off cash only all the time. This sale alone and their wide selection kept me coming back. However, it is the employees that drove me away. I had to stop coming to this store because the employees are incredibly obnoxious and rude. Even though you may be in the store to shop, they conduct their business in the store by shouting across the store as much as possible. Loud conversations between employees include, "How many issues of Batman: The Killing Joke do we need for the convention?!" What?! 3?!!!" or "That comic book sucks!" This is all they yell about and it is so loud and obtrusive to your time in the store. Second, their employees' helpfulness is incredibly sporadic. I came into the store one time looking for a new great Batman book and had a great conversation with one of the employees where he helped me figure out what I wanted to buy. When I came in the very next day, I saw him and said that I was back for vol. 2. However, he simply shrugged me off and ignored me as if I didn't exist. Way to help me out and than flat out ignore me. The workers are plain rude and awkard too, always making you feel odd when your purchase something. The asian female cashier is especially awkward and unhelpful. It sucks, because I consider their store to be a wealthy library of comic books. But their workers stress me out and drive me out of the store. I even went in one more time just to give the store one last chance several weeks ago and immediately regretted it as the employees were unhelpful and rude and loud during my entire visit. Just stay away from here, as the employees are a nightmare. read more

The service in Culver City is so much better than this location. We were rung up for a bunch of the used comics (which is a great idea to keep the art moving and out of the landfills), and when we asked the sales girl about the sticker price of one of the comics, she rudely responded "it's up to 50% but doesn't mean it's 50%. You don't have to buy it." We look at the sign and it actually says at least 50% off so... change the sign if your snooty salesperson knows better. We understand if it was mismarked or put in the wrong box or something, but don't make your customers feel like they're idiots. We didn't appreciate that attitude from her. Other than that, Pulp Comics is cool but we'll stick to the Culver City location. We've only had good experiences there, including great recommendations and friendly service. read more

This experience occurred last year. However, I just joined Yelp (hence the late review). But I find that I NEED to write this because everyone seemed to have good experiences with this place except for my boyfriend and I. We walked in with the intent of purchasing. There were a lot of people in the store browsing through their comics and whatnot's. I don't understand why but the sales associate came right up to us and asked us if we needed any help. This guy looked like he was high on speed or something. I didn't get his name but he was very "in your face". I'm not joking. He was literally up in our faces. To ease the awkwardness, my boyfriend suggested a few comics. Unfortunately, this opened up a can of worms! He creeped me out to no end! He followed us...NO...he TRAILED us around the store asking my boyfriend questions about his interests. I told him to let us simply shop. We didn't get enough space away from him to browse through the aisles! Basically, we walked in, got harassed by this creepy, bugged out sales guy, then walked right out wondering if I should report this guy for discrimination or contact the owner about this experience. I was that upset. I truly felt uncomfortable. I have NEVER experienced that before when shopping. We have never returned since. I don't know if the "regulars" were treated better than us new "customers". But this is my experience and I strongly feel that my review should be read with consideration. One word: RENTAL! Yes, that's right you can rent graphic novels now. But whatever you do, please don't read your rented copy of Transmetropolitan while you're taking a bubble bath. That's not smart because you'll probably soil and ruin a copy that could be shared with other Warren Ellis fans. Mike, the guy who runs the show, is a cool cat that truly has a love for comic books. He keeps a friendly atmosphere and is always willing to help you find something that quenches your thirst for a good read. The shop doesn't just cater to superheroes in tights, nor doom and gloom independents. This place has something for everyone. You can also buy manga and anime. Rare issues of popular titles can be found behind the counter. Collectible trading cards and action figures are there as well. I feel the best part about Pulp Fiction is that it's fairly quiet. You won't have to listen to loud mouths behind the counter talking nonsense at an unnecessary volume (Yeah, I'm referring to you, Golden Apple Comics on Melrose!). Man, I rarely write reviews, but super bummed about the service here. I'm just getting back into comics after a while and pretty exited about it. I started picking up a few books here and there and the guys here told me I should just start a pull list and they would have my books ready every time. Well, I've been going the last few days before the closing time of 7pm and they're already closed. Today I got there and three or four guys were in there and they turned me away saying they were closed. I know that when the end of your work day hits, you want to take off, so I did't want to hassle them, but if I go so far as to get a weekly pull you can't just let me pay for my books and get gone. What's the point, I should subscribe online or something. What a waste of time. I'm over it. read more

I came in to get some IronMan comics. I went on a date with this guy and he said all I needed to know about him was that he is Tony Stark. Well, I know nothing about IronMan, so I went to purchase some comics to get me started (I like to read first before I see the movie). The employees here were friendly and very helpful. I left with a great (and well-priced) starter collection. The store was very organized and has a great variety. I saw many other things that looked appealing to read, and I thought comics were not my thing! I very much recommend this store. As for my date, let's just say I figured out what kind of person Tony Stark is and I am not sure he is right for me. Who even describes themselves like that? This shop has one of the largest selections of graphic novels I've seen so far in the LB area. And the prices simply can't be beat. Everything is 40% off cover price. Me: My beloved Goon volume 11 for only 9 bucks?? *faints* the only thing I didn't like was that they offer little to nothing if you try to trade/sell some of your comics/graphic novels. Staff and customers alike also act a fool when a pretty comic nerd in a dress comes in. however, a true nerd will not let the little things squash her fun shopping here! Pulp Fiction is my favourite home away from home. The selection in store may be small, especially compared to the definitely NOT so amazing behemoth down the street, but the owner is willing to order anything for you if you ask for it. The manga selection is growing every day, and the discount comic bin is fantastic for rummaging for your old and missing titles (and some deliciously campy ones as well ;-). Mike, the owner, is smarmy and sarcastic, and teasing him endlessly can certainly while away a boring afternoon. Plus he does, in fact, know a great deal about comics. All the staff are knowledgeable but not pretentious, and always make you feel welcome. If the friendly atmosphere wasn't enough to bring you in for your supplies, surely the 20% all manga, new comics and graphic novels will do the trick. Everyone likes to save money, right? :D The only real drawback to PF is you can easily drive by it unless you know exactly where you're going -- turn right on Carson and a quick left again on Norse Way, where Dale's Diner is on the corner, and it's right in front of you. Just look for the giant stuffed Batman in the window. *grins* read more

I've been shopping at comic shops for most of my life, but it wasn't until I started shopping at Pulp Fiction that I understood what it really meant to have a loyalty to my local comic shop. First off, the prices and selection of hardcovers, trades and omnibi is pretty equal to that of Amazon. There's one important thing to keep in mind if you're the type to buy these types of graphic novels and collected editions: in my experience, the quality of the Pulp Fiction's books are much finer than what I've purchased on Amazon. Too often, when I've bought from the online giant, my books have had dents and creases (which is something you really don't want on a $60 to $80 omnibus or Absolute edition). Not only are Pulp Fiction's premium books in excellent condition, the price simply cannot be beat (you can usually score a larger discount on the week a collected edition is released). I've recently moved to digital, but I still have a pull list with Pulp Fiction because the store has a generously tiered discount plan depending on the amount of books on your pull list. If you have 20 books on your list, you receive 20 percent off of your books. Not bad at all. I think the real strength of the store are the staff. They know their stuff and they're more than willing to help you find something if you're just getting back into comics or if you're curious about something that's off the beaten path. Not only that, the staff is willing to tell you when they didn't like a book. I can't stand going into a comic shop and they recommend everything under the moon to earn a buck. I'd rather have them earn my trust, then they can earn my money. The folks at Pulp Fiction understand how to build a strong and loyal customer base. read more

I wish I had a better review to give. I am in town visiting after having moved out of state, and I read about this place on Yelp. I was so excited to check it out. I walk in looking for the next volume of a series I have been reading, and I also wanted some of the discount stock for a present I've been working on for a friend. Barely any greeting. No questions from the two guys sitting behind the counter. I'd understand if they were busy, but I was the only customer. I can't find the title I'm looking for, so I ask a question. Gruff response. There it is. I then ask for the discount area (I call it quarter stock because that's what it's called at the shops I visit at home) and I get a puzzled response and then a redirect to the back once I clarify what I want. Fine. Different stores/cities, different terms. But then two separate customers walk in while I'm going through the stock, and they get happy greetings and questions about what they are looking for, and the staff willingly get up from behind the counter and hunt down titles and suggestions, and their tone is so different with the two guys who came in. I see the discount signs (40% DC/Marvel, 30% Image/Dark Horse, 20% other publishers, which is impressive) and I decide to pick up the first volumes of a couple of other series that I've been wanting to read. One I find without issue, but the other I need help with. I ask the guy for help, he gets up, picks it up off the shelf and hands it to me like I'm some kind of drain on his day. I'm all set to check out, and again it's curt responses and a "Thanks" as he puts the receipt down on a stack of individual issues and volumes that I had just bought. TL:DR: I dropped $35 on comics and walked out feeling like crap. I have to wonder if my experience would have been better if I was a guy. Or even a prettier girl. The discounts are so tempting, and the store has a lot of stock, but it's not worth my time. I would go back this week purchase the remaining four volumes on one of the series I'm reading, but I'm not going to spend my money where it's not welcome. I'd rather pay full price at one of the stores back home. read more

I called them Saturday 9/19 to see if they have a certain title. The guy on the phone says they have it in their "warehouse" and it should be in the store possibly by Monday and certainly by Tuesday. Per what he told me, I stopped by Tuesday only to find out they are closed on Tuesdays... but they had 2 or 3 people working inside! I talked to one guy who said the register is closed. I asked if he could at least check to see if the title I spoke to them about on Saturday is now in the store. He said, no, they are closed. Terrible customer service. . read more

I'm by no means an expert when it comes to comic book stores. Pulp Fiction has an enormous selection of the graphic novel which, if you're into that, is fantastic. But for those of us who are looking for comic books, it's just a bit strange. The DC comics are tucked away toward the back while the Marvel are given front of store placement. Whatever, it's a business decision, I get that. Here's why the two stars from me: they have back issues - OLD back issues - dating back a couple of decades or more - but there is absolutely NO organization to them. Not alphabetized, not in chronological order, not even grouped by company (DC, Marvel, etc). Strange. And the one back issue I found was hiding behind the current issues. Curiouser! There was a guy packing boxes up at the front. The girl at the register was friendly enough but - and maybe I should have asked - the comics were not boarded and bagged. Okay so it wasn't a huge purchase but at the other 8 comic books I've been to only one other didn't b&b. Maybe I'm spoiled. Overall - it wasn't a horrible experience. But I seriously doubt I'll be back. read more

One of the best comic book stores I've ever been to! They have an enormous selection of omnibuses the line the walls. There is also a trade-in section where you can get used books for a cheaper price. What I find is a nice touch is they put aside different packets of comic books with a short blurb on why it's special or significant. What I liked best about this place are their discounts and the fact they have basically everything in stock! 40% off for all dc, marvel, image and dark horse. This beats any price on amazon! Keep in mind that 10% of this discount is given if you pay in cash... So keep your wallet fat and ready for slaughter. But if you find yourself a bit short on cash, there is a liquor store next door with an ATM (with a $1.50 fee). read more

Trust me: this is THE best place to get comics. I refuse to buy my comics from anywhere else but Pulp Fiction. I've been shopping here for nearly ten years, and I don't plan on changing that ever. This place is my JAM! I used to live around the corner from the old shop, but I moved when they moved. It's not as close, but I will make my trip down there. A girl who reads comic books is like a unicorn. You may have heard of this mythical creature, but you have never seen one. Hahaha, or so it seems to be this way when I walk into a comic book store. They have a large selection of comics, mangas, and memorabilia. I have no idea why people are ragging on the owner Mike. He is a really sweet, nice, a helpful guy. He guided me along in my journey from manga to graphic novels. I really can't stand to read them in serial format, it's just too short. He suggests books I would like and he's usually spot on. The people that work there are friendly and an expert in the genre they like so that's nice. To all the haters - sorry people are being too helpful! Jeez, what's wrong with a little customer service? I've been to other comic shops in town, and when I ask them a question I get a limp point in the general direction, sighs, or a eyerolls. And seriously, they won't let you read an entire volume in the store? Who does that? It's not a library. They have great discounts too! Graphic novels are always 40% off. read more

This is easily the best comic book store I've been to in Orange County area. I'm more of a graphic novel guy...strictly for cosmetic purposes, I prefer collecting them over comic books and this place is packed with a crazy selection of Graphic Novels. I'm all about supporting local businesses, but along with that comes the inevitable downside, that you will end up paying full list price for things...when you could have gotten a much better deal on Amazon. Not the case here. This is the first place I've been in which almost all the books I purchased were CHEAPER THAN AMAZON. Unheard of in this day and age to see this. Overall I just got a really good vibe here. Staff was welcoming, selection was excellent, and prices are crazy low. If you are in this area, this is easily where you should be going for your Comics fix. read more

I love this store! This is my favorite comic book store of all time. Yes, that's right, I said it. Wanna know why??? They always have new discounts on TBP, they have the best variety of comics (for this part of town), I love the way they organize their TPB (by title & publisher FYI), and if they are missing an issue I know I can talk to the guy & he'll order it for no problem. They seem to have a better stock of recent/new comics in. For example, if it's been a while since I've done my comic shopping due to limited funds I know if I venture back they will have most of the issues I have missed, or will soon. Even if they don't they will have something even better to distract me with. Not to mention they also have a very sizeable manga section. The owner/manager who I always see if always friendly, talkative, and gives the best recommendations if I'm feeling curious and adventurous to try something new, or at least new to me. 40% off graphic novels all the time, every day, no matter what. Actually it's not no matter what. DC, Image, Marvel, and IDW are the only ones that are 40% off and you must bring CASH!!! Cash is king at Pulp Fiction, so be ready to spend stacks of dough. I don't really understand the people giving bad reviews about this place due to service. This place has ridiculous prices, prices that are better than Amazon at most times with instant access. The organization is not too hard to figure out, seeing as how all the companies are separated and alphabetized (mostly). Come here if you want graphic novels, or if you have no other close comic stores to get a pull list from. I recently moved to Long Beach a few months ago. I'm a big fan of manga and comics in general so I was happy to find a place close by. There are not a lot of comic book places anymore where I can feed my inner otaku, so I thought I would give this place a shot. Frankly, this place is very unwelcoming. When I walked in the guy at the counter, I think his name was Ryan (bald with glasses), seemed nice enough at first. But when I asked if they had any manga, he looked at me like I was annoying him. Apparently, this place is more for comics and graphic novels - which makes sense. They did have some, but older stuff. It didn't help the fact that I'm Asian, so he made me feel like I was just feeding into the whole "shojo manga" girl category. Pretty much he stereotyped me, when I didn't even mention what manga I wanted. Then I asked about if they had any Hellboy and Invincible Iron Man material and I guessed I peaked his interest enough into paying attention. They did, which was neat, but then he started telling me about his YouTube channel and pretty much plugging himself to me. He was rambling about his Hellboy video and pretty much making himself look like he was some big YouTube celebrity. Dude, seriously? I just wanted to get some comics & manga and bounce, not hear about how great you think you are. I ended up just pretending to look around and left without getting anything. Before I left though, he shoved his card about his website into my face. Told me to watch it. I ended up checking it out for like 30 seconds and it's pretty much a channel that caters to toxic masculinity of the comic book industry. Women can like comics, too - but this is something that I should probably mention in a YouTube comment. Maybe next time, just help a customer out without trying to flirt your way in to some YouTube likes and subscriptions. Also, manga is just as a form of story telling as traditional comics so try not to judge people based on what they like. 'kay? read more

I'm of two minds, they have a GREAT wide selection of graphic novels from DC, Marvel, Vertigo and even Wildstorm, as well as some comics from Image. The real good quality of this store is their books are all 40% off every day if you pay in cash and if you pay in Debit or Credit you receive a 30% off on all comics you buy. The problem is that sometimes the staff are rude and very accusing of customers. Other times, you have a very good employees that help you out with finding certain titles. I wouldn't go here looking for back issues in decent condition. The racks are glass or plexiglass, which is far better than the wire racks some other places use, but some of the racks have lips in front, which will probably cause bad stress marks along the spines of the comics. Most of the back issues in boxes were not bagged and boarded, and so are likely in pretty poor condition. The absolute strength of the store is graphic novels. Most were in excellent condition and are on constant sale. Marvel and DC/Vertigo were 30% off, IDW and some others were 20% off. If you pay cash, you'll get an additional 10% off! If I can make it down to the area, I'm definitely grabbing more graphic novels. read more

I expected more. It was not all that & the guys working there seemed to be in their own little world. Also, you cannot use a credit or debit card if under $10. I had to use the ATM next door, get charged the regular non-bank fee, and go back. I bought 2 comics for my boy & the guy collected the money, put the books in a bag, and tossed it on the counter. He then quickly returned to the "little world." Very disappointing. As comic book stores are dying they should all make a every effort to bring in costumers & making them feel very welcome. read more

Not a bad place if you are looking to buy some trades as I think pretty much all of them have some sort of discount. They also seem to have a large selection of manga and anime (dvds as well as toys). Didn't stick around long enough to talk to the staff but they seem knowledgeable enough. Personally I am a fan of having comics rather then trades. Their comic selection is okay for current issues however there was not much in terms of back issues which is usually what I got to these further shops for. Moreover, even if there were back issues they weren't in very good condition or they would be in a random box somewhere. read more

They'll have moved to their new location by now, but my son and I stopped by a couple of weekends ago. I was generally impressed by their selection of new books and graphic novels, but I was particularly pleased by their long boxes on the floor -- $1 a comic, which is a bit pricey for a budget bin, but theirs are organized by character, if not by title -- and their sale shelves of graphic novels. We picked up several important arcs in trade paperback -- Dark Phoenix, Trial of Galactus, etc. -- for half price. Not sure I would have bought the books otherwise, but this is a great deal for those books. Worth checking out if not just for the sales rack. read more

This is, without a doubt, the best comic book store in the greater Long Beach area. They offer great discounts (unlike another store in town); a wide selection of comics, trade paperbacks, hardcovers, figures, and miscellaneous merchandise; and they also have a very knowledgeable, friendly staff, who know what they're talking about. They're also great with pull customers, offering nice discounts and perks, and recommendations for other titles you like. These are some of the reasons I drive out of my way to Pulp Fiction, from where I live in Buena Park! Check out this shop! read more
