Ginger is the best. I'm a guy and previously went to the basic Fantastic Sams/Supercuts for my hair cuts. They were okay but not great in any fashion. I had an event coming up so I said what the heck, I'll go to an actual salon and see if it makes a difference. Upon entering I was warmly greeted by Ginger and offered a beverage (big plus...it was really hot that day). We sat down and she asked what I was looking to have done. We talked for about 10 minutes and she really understood what I was looking for. Fast forward 30-40 min later, my hair is the best I have ever seen. The cut was perfect and she even styled it in a way I didn't think was possible. Her recommendations for styling products were great (I bought a few). All in all it was an incredible experience and I plan on going back to Ginger every time from now on. I had decided it was time to embrace my "natural silver" - except that it stayed at salt & pepper - which wasn't bad (I got compliments) but it wasn't great, either (husband gave a downvote). So when I got back to town a year or so later, it was time to see Chyna & discuss various color ideas. Chyna greeted me warmly & after offering me coffee, tea, wine or water, she seated me & listened attentively to what exactly was it that I wanted: I decided on saving the silver for another time in my life. I wondered if I could keep the lighter tones. I also wanted a interesting yet discreet big pop of color that didn't scream "potential 5150." After listening to my ramblings, Chyna confidently nodded her head & again offered me a refreshment. After settling me in with a great-tasting cup of freshly ground & brewed coffee, she set off to mix the magic. As my hair was being "did," I couldn't help but notice how satisfied the other clients looked as they were leaving their respective stylists (big props to Ray; very talented!). Hard candies, wrapped chocolates & a large selection of magazines from Us Weekly to Smithsonian were also available nearby. Not only did Chyna expertly put in fantastic golden & dark honey highlights onto my base color, she also lifted up my hair in the back & sectioned off a few inches of hair up from the nape of my neck from one ear to the other to which she pre-bleached before applying Pravana's Vivid Violet. The beautiful colors she chose tamed the coarse grey strands & the violet demurely peeks out from underneath my hair & will look great in any up-do. Even knowing that special care will be needed to maintain my colored locks - I love, love, LOVE the final effect! read more

But today, I told myself "F*^# it, let's do this." So what do I do? I jump onto my handy dandy yelp app & searched for the nearest hair salons (with HIGH ratings), & that could accommodate walk-ins. Called around a couple salons, until I stumbled upon Pump Salon. I originally called to get my hair cut by either Lori or Chyna, because they were all the rave in the reviews for this salon. Unfortunately neither of the ladies I requested were available for a walk-in, but Chyna had recommended Selina... which I at first, I was 100% skeptical about, considering there were no reviews about her & her service. Nonetheless, I agreed to come in. Got to the salon, was greeted immediately at the door & was offered a beverage. Waited a whole 3 minutes before Selina came to the front & introduced herself. She took me to her chair, I explained exactly what I wanted done + showed her hair inspo pics so she can further grasp what I envisioned my hair to look like. From beginning to end, she was a pleasure to be around. It wasn't awkward at all, she made me feel so comfortable to be around her. Best of all... she completely understood/related to the texture of my hair. I have naturally wavy/curly/frizzy hair, and she knew exactly how to "work" with my hair. Because certain techniques done on a person w/ straight hair will have a completely different outcome on someone w/ the same texture as mines. She definitely took her time & I didn't feel like I was just another client in her seat. I loved the outcome of my hair. She did as I asked, nothing more, nothing less. I also liked the fact that after cutting my hair & blowing it out, she asked if I was okay w/ the cut/length & if not we could go back & cut a little more off / adjust it to my liking. That alone, is something you don't always get from hair dressers/hair stylists. Most of them aren't that concerned w/ your wants and needs and will just do your hair and send you off. I let her know that I wanted a part of my hair cut shorter, and she gladly did it. I wasn't hesitant at all to tell her that, because like I said she made me feel so comfortable around her. The overall atmosphere at Pump Salon was very peaceful. Everyone was so welcoming, and the salon itself isn't too big. It's cozy, which in return makes interaction w/ everyone else that much more intimate. Which is great! Doesn't make your whole experience awkward, and makes time fly by cause you're not just siting there in silence, you're interacting w/ other staff + clients. After 5 long years of living here jumping from hairstylist to hairstylist I was finally blessed with someone who not only knows how to work with my Filipino hair but also someone who's from Hawaii that just "knows".
