Punjab Palace made for a fantastic date night! The cozy ambiance set a great mood for the evening. The service was quick and attentive, and they even handled wrapping up our leftovers for us. The Goat Biryani was incredibly flavorful and served with a nice yogurt-based sauce, though we did wish it had a bit more meat. And the Peshwari Naan was easily my favorite part of the meal! Had a few friends over for dinner and ordered several dishes - dal makhani, goat curry, chhole, aloo gobhi, bhindi, baingan bhartha, for the main dishes. I've tried a BUNCH of dishes from Punjab Palace, and it's all been good. Joe sticks with his go-to--Chicken Tikka Masala. He adores it. Just about every entree comes with a generous portion of Basmati rice. I think my top favorites are the Chicken Vindaloo (spicier than Tikka Masala and I LOVE the potatoes in it), and the Saag Paneer--homemade cheese cubes in spinach. Actually, to tell the truth, we always get an order of Saag Paneer to share no matter what we order. Punjab Palace serves up a number of soups. The Coconut Soup is delicious, so unique a flavor profile. You HAVE to get some nan. We usually order the garlic nan, so good. We visited Punjab Palace on a Friday evening and it was completely buzzing with energy (and orders) from start to finish. Whether you want to dine in or takeout, you really can't go wrong. The service here was attentive and pretty quick, considering how many tables and food items they're dealing with. We started things off with the onion bhaji which were tasty and paired nicely with the provided dipping sauces. For the table we ordered chicken tikka saag, lamb coconut korma, and paneer naan. Both curries were really good and had great flavor. I wish they were slightly spicier (we ordered one mild and one medium), but it was still enjoyable. Wow, I was stunned by the newspaper/magazines/media posted in front of the restaurant about all the Zagat surveys and media attention this place had received in the past. They really should try to advertise those attention more to attract more customers. But regardless, the restaurant already seems to be doing great without such additional advertisements. The food was good, but I was especially pleased with their ability to accommodate dietary preferences. I wasn't sure if the entrée I ordered was vegan or not, and added "special instructions" on DoorDash asking them to either make it vegan or substitute for a different dish. The order came with a note explaining that they substituted coconut milk for the cream, which was great. While I would have been fine with the other option, it's one I've had plenty and wasn't too excited about--as opposed to the tofu masala, which is not a common dish. That type of substitution is something I wish more places did, but usually they already have the sauces made and aren't able to easily adapt. There's also a lot of dishes with tofu instead of paneer, which expands the usual menu of items I am able to order--even more so if cream can be subbed out. So the first time I had this food GH mixed up wrong orders. Luckily that person ordered vegan too. I would suggest the Tofu Marcella. Rich and creamy red sauce with Indian seasonings. We tried the cauliflower with curry potatoes mild and a lentil dish ( green or brown) in a green sauce. All came with rice, I tried a whole wheat bread. It was like a chewy pancake. What I like past, as what I spoke to the manager or owner. He said any dish we have that has cheese in it or cream in it. We can substitute with coconut milk and tofu so that was a real treat. I was craving Indian food and wanted to try a new spot, and I have no regrets!! I went during lunch for the cheaper lunch prices and got Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Coconut Korma, and Saag Paneer. These curries come with basmati rice and overall is filling!! Chicken Tikka Masala is a usual fav and is tomato based. Although that would typically be people's favorite, the other two curries stood out to me the most. The Saag Paneer is worth trying if you want to try something different and creamy spinach based (also vegetarian friendly), and if you want a stronger curry taste, the Lamb Coconut Korma is great. You can interchange the meats with the curries if you prefer chicken over lamb, etc!! I got both Roti and Naan, but actually prefer their Naan much more (it's a bit fluffier and less dry imo). I know coworkers from Punjab who've also been here when they were in the states on work visits and they agree it is very good. The chicken portions are excellent, stuff like lamb you may find more scant but still adequate for a serving and a bit (not 2 s as with the chicken). I'm usually not too critical about rice because whatever dish I get overpowers the rice anyway, but their rice is REALLY TASTY. It was lightly seasoned and had the perfect sprinkling of cumin seeds. It was also really pretty! Some grains were red or orange. The paneer vindaloo was great. They don't skimp on the paneer which I appreciated. Their paneer is more springy than what I've tried from other places, but in a good way. I just wish it was more spicy! I also got a mango lassi ($3). Since moving back to brookline this month and wanting to again try Punjab Palace, it felt like the perfect night for bringing in a variety of dishes to see which ones we actually prefer... Especially, based upon us finding a 20% off discount with a purchase of $35 or more. Well, sadly, I don't think we will be returning anytime soon... Unless, the restaurant makes good on it and compensates us in some way. As for the pluses, both appetizers, the Vegetable Samosa and the Vegetable Pakora, were tasty and the portion size was pretty significant for the price! They also gave plenty of sauces like Onion Chutney, Raita, and Tamarin. However, with regard to the minuses, there were just too many to consider acceptable. The Peshawari Naan and the Aloo Paratha had very little filling, meaning that we could hardly even notice much, if any, of either the coconut and raisins nor the potato inside each of them respectively... they honestly tasted like plain breads with an occasional touch of sweet coconut for the Peshwari but no real presence of potato in the Aloo as already stated. It was extremely disappointing!!! As for the show stopper, our main dish to share, we ordered the Curry Lamb (HOT), and we found it to be fatty and over peppery... Not in fact spicy. It seemed as though the kitchen simply added in a single ingredient to bring out the heat but lost the depth of flavors and textures in the process. Again, super unfortunate! At this point, I doubt we will ever revisit because we enjoy hot, spicy entrees with complexity and also would not know which other type of bread might perhaps be more flavorful. read more

Wouldn't recommend. Lamb curry- 8/10 The lamb was super tender and the curry was bomb. Downside was that it wasn't very spicy. We asked for hot and maybe got mild spice. Our favorite dish. Saag Panner- 5/10 I am not an expert on this dish by any means, but honestly it was pretty mediocre. Maybe it's just a preference, but it lacked flavor. Again no heat. Any type of naan here is so good and freshly made. It is definitely better to eat here than get take out. When you eat inside you practically get unlimited rice and they give you more if you have leftovers. If you get take out they give you very little rice, which was a little disappointing.
