Was hesitant to post a 3 star (good, but not great) review during the pandemic, but given the news on Boston Restaurant Talk (https://bostonrestaurants.blogspot.com/2022/01/curry-house-in-brookline-has-closed.html?m=1), it is now or never to share my Curry House covid period experience for them at this Coolidge Corner location. *** Curry House in Brookline is offering curbside pickup during the pandemic which worked since I'm not ready for dine in. In case you want to order a soda with your meal, just a heads up that theirs don't come by the can. First impression of their naan wasn't great. There was a black piece of charcoal encrusting a paler portion of the burnt half of the bread surface when I unwrapped the foil. My thought, bad QC. My mom's, wow, they don't clean well. The naan was good sized, and helped to tame the spiciness of the food, but was rather tough, and not particularly enjoyable. And I'm a carb lover. It likely didn't help that I had recently attempted my first homemade naan with yeast and yogurt during my bout of covid baking, and it had been really tender and poofy. The Aloo Chaat (spiced potatoes, lentil wafers made with yogurt and sweet and sour sauce) came hot and portioned for sharing as an appetizer. With no spice level option provided, it came with a kick - not sure what in the dish was hot though, since it wasn't consistently evident in every bite. We sampled a number of the vegetarian appetizers having ordered their Vegetable Platter (vegetable samosa (1), 2 each: aloo tikki, paneer pakora, vegetable pakora). I found the aloo tikki so gingery as to be spicy hot. The paneer was super firm with a dry crust. Of the four, I liked the samosa and the vegetable pakora best. The chicken pakora (6 good sized pieces) was red tinged meat inside the chickpea batter crust, that ranged from either rather dry white meat, to sufficiently moist dark meat. The Saag Paneer (requested mild) came with white Basmati rice. Note that mild here does not mean no spicy/heat. In fact at least one mouthful revealed a significant hit of the hot, as we realized it might not have been sufficiently well mixed. But it was the slow burn type and not too much for me to handle, especially when accompanied by the rice. Speaking of which, their rice was well prepared with separate grains and a nice flavor. The Chicken Jalfrozie was described as a cream sauce with some vegetables, and you could actually distinguish the pieces of peppers and onions somewhat. Requested mild as well, it also retained a measure of heat, but nothing I could not manage. The chicken was chunky and tender. For dessert, the Rasmalai (cottage cheese patties in creamy milk sauce with nuts) was a nice mild treat. Not the best I've ever had, but it sufficed. Same with their Kheer (aka rice pudding). Their mango lassi is nice and thick, with perhaps a touch too much ice, but it isn't priced at a point which makes it an easy no brainer add on. But at least it was good. Service was prompt and pleasant. So for a potential 4 star trip, I would try ordering a meal with rice, samosa or vegetable pakora (if you like that sort of thing), and a dessert if you are hankering for a little something sweet to end your meal with. read more

I went there for the weekend buffet. In general, the overall experience was good. The restaurant was clean and bright, and the seating area was comfortable and spacious. The reason I didn't give it four stars or more was there were no other protein options than chicken. If they offer beef or lamb curry for the buffet, I'll definitely go back. read more

[3.5/5] Simple and clean interior with a decent amount of tables. Got to try their lunch thali - you're choice of 3 entrees plus rice and naan and it was only $10.95. I chose chicken vindaloo, chicken curry, & Chana masala. Their serving was really generous and I left stuffed for that price point compared to other Indian restaurants in the area. The only thing I was disappointed by was the spice levels. Vindaloos should be spicy but it was about as spicy as their mild chicken curry. Otherwise though everything was delicious. We just ate the most delicious take out lunch since this whole pandemic began. We used their online ordering system on their website and it was very easy! We put our order in this morning for a 12:30 pick up and it was waiting for me when I came to get it ! My husband and I shared our orders of chicken coconut and chicken jalfrozie. We were able to customize our spice preference. We both got mild but I think we would have been able to handle medium. I got garlic naan, he got plain. I can't wait to eat the leftovers!!! This is fast food Indian food. We came here on a Friday night to meet up with some friends. We've never tried this place and we usually frequent another sit-down indian restaurant a few blocks away. Once entering we were called to the back where the service area was. We saw all the dishes they had to offer sitting on warmers. We ordered the vegetable thali special and the vegetable samosa. This place is all self service, grab your own water and bus your ditry dishes. The food was alright. The flavors were a little off than traditional dishes. The samosa was bland and had to be doused in the mint sauce. The daal was oddly flavored. The only plus side is that they serve brown rice. We were only 1 of 2 customers in the place. Generally a decent place, and I'm fine with the food being served cafeteria style, though could be much better. The chicken in the chicken tikki masala was way too dry; the lamb curry was much better, if a bit sweet. The naan was also a bit dry, though that could be because it was sitting out. Much stronger were the chana masala, which nice and tasty, and the vegetable korma was nice and creamy, though they really could have heated it (and others) up in the microwave! The chicken vindaloo was better - the potatoes was soft, good-textured, well-flavored; and the flavor overall was quite active and rich. The vegetable pakoras were not so great - they were really dried up, stale, cold fried food. The flavor might have been okay, but that the pieces were kind of tough didn't help. Stopped into Curry House for lunch. I am sure at one time it was a buffet but due to covid we had the lunch special. Like most pre-cooked specials at Indian joints the curry here was pretty bland. The greens though was very fresh and at least they had limited outdoor dining. The naan was good but a little overcooked, fresh but by far not the best I have had. Came here for the lunch buffet after a work out at Pure Bare. This place is very conveniently located in Cleveland circle. What a bargain! 10$ for all you can eat Indian food. They had the classics- chicken tiki Marsala (SO GOOD!), vegetable curry (meh), and spinach paneer. It also comes with rice and naan The service was also very good! Attentive and friendly. I always take note when my water glass is empty and they kept it full! In the end, it's nothing special but a great bang for your buck which is what a college student like myself is looking for, so I'll be back! read more

We saw there was a buffet, and being as to how I'm selective about the Indian food I may try this was a safe choice. You have a decent amount of choices: you can grab mint chicken, chicken masala, chickpea salad, rice, honey balls, rice pudding dessert (not familiar with the proper names), just be aware that all of the only meats they feature for the buffet is chicken. You can ask for naan bread as a part of the meal and they will come out to your table hot and ready. The sauces are more on the mild side, most likely to appeal to the people not too fond of curry. As always, you can grab as much as you want or how little you want, and for about $15 it's definitely worth the price. read more

An Indian restaurant located in the nice and quiet community of Brookline, I have came here a couple of times for lunch and dinner. During the times that I have been here, I have found my meals here to be fairly good, not mediocre or terrible. I first came to this place with a couple of friends to take advantage of the lunch buffet special, which is almost $11. I have yet to find an Indian restaurant in the somewhat decent state of Massachusetts that offers a lunch buffet at a reasonable price. They have a decent selection of various dishes, plus you can get as much naan bread as you want. I remember having the Tandoori Chicken, Chicken Tikka Masala, various curry dishes, and a cabbage dish. They do a really good job preparing the Tandoori Chicken compared to other places. The chicken was tender, juicy and flavorful. The Chicken Tikka Masala had a nice creamy flavor, and tasted good with the basmati rice. Although it was not the best Chicken Tikka Masala, it was still tasty. As for the curry dishes, they lacked spice, but were still really good. The Indian cabbage dish was okay, thought the cabbage was really soggy. The naan bread they served was fresh, piping hot, and so soft and chewy. It was one of the freshest naan breads I had, and it tasted so good eaten alone or with the curry sauces. The second time I came here, it was for dinner. I ordered the two combo special, where you get two entrees (one has to be a vegetarian dish), basmati rice or naan, and an appetizer. For my entrees, I got a chicken dish similar to what I had for lunch, and a Saag Paneer, which is a creamy dish made from spinach with paneer cheese. For my appetizer I got an Onion Bhajji, which is a fried onion street food supposedly from the Indian state of Maharashtra, located in the Western part of India. Chicken was consistently good and tasted well with the rice. The Onion Bhajji was decently good, was nice and crispy, but lacked some spice. The Saag Paneer was tasty, but the paneer cheese tasted almost like tofu. I am not sure if paneer cheese is supposed to taste that way, but I do not think it made a significant difference in the tastiness of the dish. Service was okay, I do agree that the people who work there need to be nicer, but it's not that bad. If they were doing table service rather than cafeteria style, it may have been a lot worse. I do not come to this place expecting amazing service, just decently good food that is served effectively without any significant wait. Overall, while this place is not high on my recommendations on Indian food, I believe this place can get the job done well, but not really well. This place is a really good choice in the nice and quiet community of Brookline to spend $11 for a decent dinner that will fill up your stomach or if you want to pig out on a luncheon feast of decent Indian food. read more

I haven't tried many Indian food places in the area so I can't compare quality. However, it does seem like the prices here are a lot cheaper than other places. This could be due to the fact that it's an order and sit down place rather than having waiter service. With that being said, I've only been here twice and gotten the same thing both times - combo #1. This comes with a chicken entree, a vegetarian entree, and basmati rice for $10.95(?). The portion size for each entree may not seem like a lot at first but it's actually very filling and very worth the money! I've only gotten the chicken vindaloo, aloo mutter (green peas with potatoes), and naan on the side. All were delicious and the chicken vindaloo is highly recommended if you like a good, spicy kick! They always ask to make sure that I know the vindaloo is spicy in case I can't handle it haha. I have tried some of my friends chicken tikka masala too which was good from what I recall. I think just getting that 1 entree is $12.95 and it comes with less than the combo so it only makes more sense to get more bang for your buck, right? Finally an inexpensive, flavorful Indian restaurant! I've seen this place plenty of times and decided to try it! It reminds me a lot like a mall restaurant setup but the options are great. They have two combos and I got combo 2: which includes a chicken entree, veggie entree, rice and an appetizer. It totaled like 12 bucks! The food was the perfect size, very filling and perfectly cooked we also got the garlic naan which was good, but not the best naan I've had. I was so excited when I walked in here on Sunday evening because it smelled like home. I ordered lamb coconut with rice and a mango lassi. The flavors of the lamb coconut were watered down. I'm still wondering if they got it wrong because I missed the sweet creamy flavor of coconut. The rice was a little undercooked. The mango lassi was well done. The CTM- I asked for hot spice level, however was bland, sweet and tomatoey. Did not have the curry component or spice at all. 2. The Naan - worst nan that I have ever seen! It was dry, thin, limp and burnt/crunchy almost like papadam in places- I believe it was stale- also there was no butter on it, which usually keeps it soft. 3. The pakoras - were huge, did not come with green, spicy chutney. 4. These people don't know how to make authentic Indian food- this food tasted like probably made by a non-Indian chef following a recipe. 5. No salad was given - onions, green chilies etc. 6. I forgot to order yogurt,so called them back - however owner said it would cost $2 to get a spoonful of yogurt and refused to include it with the order- how rude! People who are looking to go to this place -take your business elsewhere. - there are a lot of other deserving restaurants around. Lunch buffet for $10.95!! What's there not to like!! All you can eat chicken tikka masala, chicken tandoori, butter chicken, lentil soup and, a number of vegetable curries. They were all delish. The naan is warm and soft, just wish they kept on coming. I especially love the tandoori chicken with their mint yogurt sauce. Recently ordered from this place. Being from India, and loving spicy food, me and my girlfriend (who also loves spicy food) decided to order the "Fireball" spicy variety of their dishes. It's pretty standard for us to always order something "Extra spicy" and love it. Once again, we love spicy food. The food they sent us was inedible. Forget that it burned our mouths, eyes, ears and intestines, this food was NOT MEANT FOR CONSUMPTION BY HUMAN BEINGS. We added two cups of yoghurt to this "Fireball" of crap that they had sent us, and still couldn't consume it. Infuriated, we called them, and got voicemail. We left a message stating almost exactly what I've said above. The next morning, the owner called back, to yell at us for ordering "Fireball". He confirmed that nobody had tasted the food, but it was called "Fireball" for a reason. I have never in my life heard of a more ridiculous excuse for serving someone inedible food. I think I finally found my favorite Indian restaurant in Boston/Brookline, sadly just a few months before I will be leaving :( Came in for dinner with a friend one night, and loved it so much that I just had to order delivery from them the next week. Both times I got the Kadai Paneer with naan. Man, their naan was delicious!!!! The perfect balance of crispy on the outside and perfectly soft on the inside. Unfortunately it gets a little soggy when they wrap it up in aluminium foil for delivery, so I would recommend sticking to rice if you get it delivered. The kadai was so flavorful, I could eat it everyday! And the portions were large enough for me to have leftovers the next day :) I did see someone comment on the mango lassi leaking in the bag when it got delivered... happened to me too, but just a little bit. I might recommend keeping the beverages outside of the bags during delivery (I'm assuming the car has a cupholder? And if there are multiple drinks going out at the same time, maybe you could just keep a few of those cardboard cupholders in the car) I will definitely be coming back and hopefully try some of their other vegetarian dishes (though I do love my kadai...). read more

I like curry house for a few reasons: -It is cafeteria style. This means I get my food quickly. Since there is no table service the price isn't driven up by tipping. You can get a variety of food and keep the price down. The food as always fresh and hot. -They serve beer and have a pretty good selection I might add -It is family run. I have not had issues with Mother India as others have had. She has always been cordial to me possibly because she knows I'm a regular. Same goes for Daughter India. - I like the atmosphere. It is spacious and looks authentically Indian. I get to watch goofy Indian music videos such as the one where the suave Indian dude is spying on the India girl working in the fields and then they break out in dance together. The one down side is that their food seems to be lacking in certain spices that would make it that much better. The quality is good but it could use a little more seasoning to liven it up a little bit. The samosa didn't really have the seasoning I preferred. There will never be enough lassi to satiate my thirst nor will there ever be a samosa so large or a vindaloo so spicy that I will not climb to the very apex of this holy mountain of basmati rice in order to taste the very best Indian in this town. My goals are lofty. For what it is, Curry House disappointed deeply. We ordered takeout. Prices were a little less than the usual Indian joint, and for good reason: portions are Lilliputian. A dollop of peas, a tiny bit of chicken. Nothing had any flavor. No spice, no heat, no salt, even. Just saucy nothingness in small plastic containers, for far too much money. I've never eaten inside but now that I know they don't enjoy flavoring their food, I don't want to. A waste of money. Too bad Brookline has so little to offer by way of good Indian. read more

I have ordered 5 chicken Biryanis and 1 veg Biryani on grubhub online. Not only was the taste of the Biryani sucked, 5 of them were packed in one big box. When I called the restaurant to ask about this, he was rude and told that it had to be mentioned to be delivered in different boxes. They were reluctant to take the delivery back. Also, the Raita that was served with all the six biryanis was in a small bowl. I get the usual baseline order of saag, and decide to try the chana. "B" gets the chicken tikka and some sad-looking lamb dish. We sit. We take a bite. We leave. This was literally the worst experience with Indian food I've ever had. We actually threw out our entire order (something I've never done in my life). The chana tasted like someone had stewed a homeless person's clothes with rotten tomatoes (then added garbanzo beans for good measure). My friend's chicken had the consistency of rubber, as did his lamb. We had eaten so little of our food that we went to a restaurant next door for Lunch - Take 2! Unlike most Indian restaurants who use chicken breast in the tikka masala they seem to use dark meat, which I don't like. The sauce was on the darker side and tasted more sour than in used to. The food was technically edible but easily some of the most disappointing Indian food I've ever had (and I've had some really mediocre Indian meals in the past). The samosa and pakora were kind of alright, but all of the main dishes everyone ordered just had no flavor and tasted like something you would have warmed up in a microwave (although to be honest, I've actually had some microwaved food that tasted better). Ordered though Foodler.com. Delivery was pretty quick. But the food wasn't that good. It's been a while since I've had Indian food but I used to love it. My rice was cooked badly. The nan was to thick and burnt on one side. I got both the regular and the garlic nan. They were both wrapped together so they we're both really garlicy. The Lamb Vindaloo's sauce was OK but the lamb was over cooked. I did like the Chicken Tikka Masala. The flavor was good and the chicken was better cooked. Also, the portions where really small for the price. And it would have been cheaper to get rice with one dish and nan with the other. Instead of just getting rice and nan on the side. You have to get both rice and non. How else would you make the sandwich out of your meal? I'm going to continue to keep looking for a new Indian restaurant. read more

Curry house was our go-to Indian place when living in Brookline. I've been here for a number of lunches and dinners. - Food is cafeteria style, but it was always fresh. - The Naan is the best!
