We stopped in while passing through Richmond based on the Yelp reviews. I make a lot of pizza and arancini di riso at home and I'm always looking for inspiration. The atmosphere and service were outstanding! We started with the Frittura Sampler. They were all tasty but leaned more toward typical fried apps than authentic Italian treats. The arancini just didn't seem to start from a proper risotto. We had the Margherita and Capricciosa pizzas. They looked great but the flavors were a little ordinary and the crust was soft and somewhat doughy. The char on the crust added some nice flavor but the oven otherwise didn't seem to be well utilized. We enjoyed the visit. It was expensive for what it was. And the food just didn't stand out as truly special. But it was a decent meal. read more

In all fairness, I ordered take-out from Pupatella so I fully recognize that this may have swayed my perception of the food and it could very well be better while eating it in the restaurant. I was so excited to find a place in Richmond that offered Neapolitan-style pizza, so I knew I had to try Pupatella. My boyfriend and I ended up dropping by and ordering take-out. We decided on the Margherita pizza, arancini, an order of meatballs, and the meatball pizza. Everything was still warm by the time we got it home, so we didn't have to mar it by reheating it in the oven. The arancini were excellent. They were perfectly crispy and flavorful; all in all, an absolute treat given that many Italian restaurants in the U.S. either do not offer them on their menu or make very soggy ones. The meatballs, however, were very disappointing. They didn't have very much flavor and tasted as if they had no seasoning whatsoever. Also, the sauce they were in tasted very artificial. We don't normally waste food, but we ended up tossing them because of the flavor the sauce imparted. The pizzas and the sauce on those was much better. I especially liked the Margherita and enjoyed how fresh all of the ingredients tasted and how perfect the crust was. On the other hand, the meatball pizza was just okay. I didn't really care for the ricotta on it, as it made the whole pizza (and its beautiful crust) soggy. I walked into a spot prior to coming to Pupatella but the line was incredibly long and I needed caffeine and food in me ASAP. My patience was wearing thin so I walked out and walked across the street to this pizza shop. They sell canned vanilla latte that actually tuned out to be amazing. I wanted to try something not so ordinary so I ordered the mushroom pizza (Italian cream, sautéed mushrooms, garlic, brie cheese and truffle oil) so incredibly delicious. The portion size is more than enough for one person. The dough was nice and chewy with the right amount of crunchy. The employees were really nice and engaging. I'm so happy I stumbled here. If they could fix their WiFi situation so that customers can have access, that would fantastic. Ready really fast. Inside was empty and was allowed to wait inside (and were thankful as it started to rain). When another customer came in there was plenty of room to social distance while he picked up food waiting for order. EVERYONE had face masks. Us. Customer who came in. All workers. The kind of place that doesn't tolerate people like "I don't care about the social contract and I won't wear a face mask ever". Essentially the no shoes, no shirt, no mask, no service philosophy. Respecting the well being of others means a lot. Good food doesn't take the place of that. read more

Been wanting to eat here for some time and finally got the chance. Started off with the Frittura sampler which is one each of sausage arancino, eggplant arancino, panzarotto, and fried mozzarella ball. They were delicious, definitely advise splitting it with someone as it is delicious balls of fried carbs. Now when it comes to the main attraction, they claim authentic Neoplitan style pizza, and rightfully so. The ingredients are 100% Italian and the pizza oven is a thing of beauty. The crust was unbelievably thin but had the necessary bite and structure. If given the opportunity I would camp out inside and spend all day trying every pizza on the menu. read more

I feel like this has been the most misaligned Yelp avg stars to experience for me yet in rva. I may have to give it another shot and choose a different sauce bc I didn't care for the pesto base (normally a favorite of mine!) but the crust was nice. I very much did not prefer the meatballs other reviewers had loved. I wanted to update this review because since my first visit I've been back a few more times and the quality of the pizza had improved quite a lot, meaning that it tasted less salty and the crust was not quite as well done as it was the first time around. Impressive is that the level of service has been top notch each visit. For a little pizzeria in the VCU area it's nice to recognize everyone's faces each time I go which means that they must be treating their employees well. The gentleman who I believe is the owner is always there working hard, never just watching what's going on. I can definitely say the pizza has grown on me and sometimes I actually find myself craving it, good thing I don't live very close. read more

Just stopped at this slice of heaven passing thru town and had to share how delightful it is! If you enjoy classic Neapolitan style pizza - this is the place for you! Parking was easy as pie, the service was fantastic, plenty of seating and the whole place was very clean. The smell was divine walking in the door and we ordered for our family of four and were thrilled at how delicious everything tasted (and how quickly we were served!). The Margherita pizza was amazing - the crust was perfection and the Buffalo mozzarella was drool-worthy. My parents took me here for my birthday lunch!!! I loved it! They thought it was a little expensive but I thought it was normal. We all 3 got the Coke's made in Mexico that come in the glass bottles and a pizza. The pizza is probably about 12 inches with a very thin bottom and a thicker crust in the Neapolitan style. They recommend you get only a few toppings because of the thin crust on bottom. I got the spicy sausage which was great but not really spicy. Dad got pepperoni and Mom did a build your own. We each managed to eat 3 of the 4 pieces the pizza is sliced into. 2 slices is too little but 4 slices is too much so you really have to get one pizza per person. They have to-go boxes too. Pupatella is one of my favorite places in Richmond for pizza. I love the fresh out of the oven thin crust pizzas. The ingredients are very fresh. My favorites are the Pesto and the Diavola. I love the texture of the dough. It is chewy, and has a perfect crisp to it around the edges. Even in the current times of the pandemic, their takeout tastes amazing after a brief heat up in the oven. Additionally their sides are great. Pupatella is a wonderful addition to the VCU/ Fan neighborhood. I love Italian food and this pizza definitely scratched that itch! We found parking right in front of the restaurant and were told to order at the front and then sit down and they would bring us our orders. My guest ordered a pepperoni pizza and I went with a custom pizza with Parmesan, red sauce and grilled eggplant. They also had a fridge of drinks including Fanta. The interior of this place is adorable: trendy red chairs, the different floor levels, the smiling staff. I liked the ambience. While we were waiting for the pizzas, a staff member approached us and asked if I wanted any other cheese besides parmesan on my pizza...I had forgotten to add mozzarella and I thought it was thoughtful of him to ask. The pizza was delicious! Thin crust, and the eggplants tasted so fresh with a hint of olive oil. My guest liked his pizza just fine but said it was pretty greasy. Don't let the lack of parking in the fan deter you because Pupatella has their own parking lot! When you first walk in, there's counter where they create the wonderful pizza noms with a nice large pizza oven right behind. There are several long high top tables you can sit at but first you must order from the counter, you're then given a number, and then the hardest part - the wait! My friend and I split the arancini sausage friggitoria and the capricciosa pizza. The recommendation is one pizza per person but I thought we had a nice amount of food without being overly stuffed. First the arancini sausage friggitoria! This is a deep fried risotto ball filled with sausage and cheese. What could go wrong? Absolutely nothing. The friggitoria was deep fried perfectly that the outside had a nice crunch and the cheese was perfectly melted inside. Our capricciosa pizza was also super delicious. They do not skimp on the toppings! Our pizza was stuffed to the max with mushrooms, artichokes, prosciutto, and mozzarella. The staff are extremely friendly. The set-up to me is slightly odd because they're not quite waiters since you're ordering from the counter but there are a lot of folks roaming around the restaurant ready to lend a helping hand. read more

I am a true pizza snob and have been on the hunt for decent pizza in Richmond for a few weeks. On a whim decided to try Pupatella, ordering through Door Dash. I opted to order a pepperoni pie and was pleasantly surprised they use beef pepperoni. My only complaint is the size of the pie, which was much smaller than I expected. Now that I know...I will order 2 pies instead of one to accommodate my family's needs. Even with being transported for delivery, the pizza held up and was not soggy. When you go in, when others say they are friendly, that's so true. The girl greeted us and handed the menus over after we stated we never been there before. You order at the register, find a table, and wait for them to send it over. If you want something else, you simply wait at the table and they'll take care of it for you, no need to go back to the register. The atmosphere works great for the area, I'd say warm industrial, wood tables, metal stools and chairs, cooper colored concrete floors. Let's get to the food! We ordered an appetizer since we didn't eat anything the whole day. The Garlic and Melted Mozzarella Bread was good, can't really mess up mozzarella over top of sourdough bread. Onto the pizza, I had the Diavola, and oh my lord yes, spicy salami, basil, mozzarella, delicious! It wasn't extra salty or unnecessarily greasy, it was baked perfectly. With a bit of char, it added something to the pizza, also these are thin but chewy. I had a cocktail, the Bella Pupatella, it was decent, but not totally memorable. The boyfriend had the Pesto pizza, flavorful, interesting choice to have walnuts with the nut-less pesto. (It added a smoky taste to the pizza) Sadly not my thing because I'm about the red tomato sauce. However my boyfriend enjoyed it. I'd love to come back, they do deliver, but I'm not too sure if the pizza would hold up well through delivery. Even though they have instructions on the box on how to heat your pizza. It seemed like all weekend I watched friends post pictures of pizza on Facebook, so I was craving pizza despite trying to be good. I decided to check this place out with a friend on a late Monday afternoon. I was pleasantly surprised to find that despite its central downtown location, it had a generously sized parking lot. The set up is a little different. You walk in and order in a line, like a fast food restaurant and are given a number. Once you take you seat, it becomes full service with wait staff. I mention that because you tip with initial payment at the register before you receive service. It's just a little different. I ordered the prosciutto and arugula pizza and my friend ordered the margherita pizza. Mine was very good, but the margherita pizza was the star. I know...It seems so simple. And it was. I was really excited to try this pizza place and wasn't disappointed in the slightest! It claims to be voted the best pizza place in Virginia so I had to try it and who doesn't love a wood fired pizza? The place is set up to where you order before you take a seat, which was nice because we didn't have to wait long to order. It was packed on a Saturday night however by the time we placed our order there was a table waiting for us. They also have a nice selection of local beers and wine as well. They have a wide variety of pizzas to choose from. The pizzas were just big enough to each order a separate one, which I liked because I can never decide on just one thing. We ordered just the plain pepperoni and pesto pizza. I don't usually like pepperoni pizza by itself but I really enjoyed this one! The pesto pizza still had to be my favorite however. They had the right amount of cheese and none of the ingredients were overwhelming. My favorite thing about the pizza was the crust. It was soft and crunchy at the same time. Hands down can't wait to come back and try other pizzas. I think the next one on the list for me will be the spinach pizza. Pupatella is closed on Mondays.
