Walked in to find it very clean and organized. I really liked that, Sat down and got a menu, ordered the sweet corn tamales and they told me they did not have any at the moment. Ordered chicharron pupusas and they were by far the worst pupusas I have ever had, very oily, like the dough was dripping in oil, found chunks of chicharron in my pupusa, which if you know pupusas, the chicharron is blended until it's more of a puree than a whole piece of meat. They don't give you enough curtido and when I asked for more they took a while to bring it, and after they brought my food, they did not back to see if everything was ok. I didnt know if they brought the receipt to pay at the table or not, so after waiting a while, just went to the register to pay. Bummed because I really wanted to like them and was so hungry, was very disappointed with the food and service. I will give them 3 stars for the cleanliness of the restaurant. read more

This is a neighborhood favorite. It is far from fancy but the food and the service are great!

This place is a small, family owned business serving up a variety of papusas, tacos, sopas, milkshakes and a few other items. Drinks are limited to horchata, lemonade and bottled soft drinks that you would find in Honduras or El Salvadore. Unfortunately, you can't get any low calorie drinks. Forget about Diet Coke or Sprite Zero. The food comes with just a fork wrapped up in a paper napkin, no knife or spoon. Restrooms are small but efficient. Toilet seat in Men's restroom was broken. They take credit cards but only by using a Square D reader plugged into a tablet. Service is personal and quick. They are willing to accommodate food requests without any flak. Keep in mind that speaking Spanish is beneficial here. read more

I've been coming here to Tio Chilo for. Couple of years now and I love this place. It is family owned and run, and everyone here is friendly even if you don't speak Spanish. All of the Salvadoran dishes I have sampled have been delicious and priced very nicely. Enjoy y'all read more

How are there so few reviews of this place? My daughter and I love to try new foods. We hadn't been to Springfield before and we had no idea what to expect. The neighborhood looks almost abandoned but it turns out it's only a couple of blocks to the historic downtown. The restaurant is about 200 yds from The Depot. Neither of us have had Salvadorian food before, our server did a nice job explaining the menu. We decided to share the steak/plantain/egg/beans breakfast and three different pupusas. Everything was absolutely delicious. The breakfast came with a spicy coleslaw that was similar in taste to sauerkraut and went well with the steak. The green pepper sauce had some kick and added nicely to the pupusas. Can't wait to go back. read more

I wasn't expecting to find a great Mexican/Salvadoran restaurant in Springfield. The papusa was definitely a good choice along with authentic street tacos with various meat choices. I had the creamy chicken plate and was pleased with the flavors! Definitely a winner, winner! We will be back! read more

As close to authentic Salvadoran food as I have found outside of El Salvador! Owners are Salvadoran and make pupusas by hand, from scratch when you order them, so they're fresh, fresh, fresh! The interior of the shop reminds me of many I have been to in El Salvador with Central American charm! read more

This place is great! Very authentic. I have had the pupusas (sp?) which are filling. I do wish they had more vegetarian or fish tacos that you could buy individually. The service is fantastic and the price is hard to beat! Will be back! read more

I was a little hesitant at first to write this review. Not because the food or service was unacceptable or sub par; but because this place is phenomenal. I know that after reading this, this place will be flooded with customers. The food was absolutely amazing. The service was excellent. Our first time having a native El Salvador dish. We have visited every restaurant in Springfield time and time again. We wanted something different and this did not let us down. There isn't much sitting room. That's ok, until like I said people start flooding into this place, and they will! I highly recommend it. read more

I did not dine-on so my review of the service is no good, but at least the to-go service was nice and easy. No tamales were available at the time so I got 4 tacos and a bean filled pupusa. One taco was filled with chicken, another with spicy pork, and two with beef tongue. Those were great $1.25 tacos with amazing flavor(costs a little more for beef tongue and other fillings). The bean filled pupusa I had was delicious, but my order had a slight raw dough texture towards the middle. I was super impressed the place was empty for dinner, however, with all great reviews I absolutely HAD to try the place out. I've tried out other places with Hispanic food in Springfield, and while they were amazing, they were also restaurants owned by my friends' parents back five years ago. Best hole in the wall in Springfield. Cheap, friendly service.l, and amazing food. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu.

All I can say is, I cannot wait to get back to this place. Get an assorted selection of pupusas and eat it with the cole slaw. I can't remember the last time I had such a surprisingly tasty meal. Even the pastry, while not your typical overly sweet American pastry, was flavorful and tasty. The Pupusas are my favorite. The baked goods taste so good, and are fresh. The chicken Tamales are delicious. For desert I had some Platanos and it was a feast. The place is clean and customer service is phenomenal. I can't wait to go back and eat there again. read more

The Short Version: No I would not eat here again due to quality of food and service. My husband and I stopped in on 12/21/2016 and immediately were turned off because we were not greeted, but simply stared at. My husband said hello to what appeared to be the only person working, and the young woman did not speak, so he said hello again (perhaps she did not understand him), and still no reply. I then said, hello twice and was met with the same dead pan stare. We should have left, but my husband asked "do you not say hello to customers?" and the cashier/cook/waitress replied yes. We initially were going to take our order to go, 4 tacos per the menu at $1.25 and a torta milanesa. After deciding to eat there I changed my order (this is while standing at the register) when I asked if they had taco dinners which I was told yes. I ordered a two taco dinner, and confirmed the dinner comes with rice and beans. We ordered an additional side of rice and beans for my husband's $8.50 torta milanesa, which by the way usually comes with rice and beans at most places. I will get to how I rate the food in a moment. As for the place it is actually nicer inside than I imagined judging from the outside. It's quaint, appeared to be clean, two televisions, but with very drafty bathrooms, which is neither here nor there. After a few minutes, the waitress came to the table with our food which was likely prepared by heating up in a microwave, because she was the only person there. She brought me a 4 taco dinner instead of the 2 taco dinner I requested, but I let it go, I figured I would take home the other two. However, I had to ask her about my husband's side of rice and beans, which took another 5 minutes for her to bring out - it likely needed to be heated up in the microwave. Anyway, when we went to the register to pay I was surprised that our ticket was $23 and change. My husband and I are well traveled, and lived in a large metropolitan city prior to moving to TN with a vast number of Mexican restaurants. I say this to demonstrate I have a good handle on what a meal like ours should cost, and it is definitely not $23, and certainly should not have been for the quality. Quality of food: Tacos: The smallest tacos I've ever seen. The tortillas were the size of tiny silver dollars. They were served cantina style,, and were tasty. I give them a 3/4 because they were tasty, but overall 2/4 due to being half the size of a traditional taco, at a full size cost. Torta Milenesa (chicken): My husband says it was good. 3/4 for taste. 2/4 because for the cost it should have come with rice and beans. Rice and beans: The rice was very bland, think school cafeteria. I had to drown it with the red and green sauce that was brought to the table. The beans were the darkest reddish brown, runny beans I'd ever seen, and also bland. 0/4 for taste. Once home, I reviewed our $23 bill (see pic)for a 4 taco dinner, and my husband's Torta milenesa with a side of rice. It showed the following charges 4 tacos at $1.50 x4, which I could have sworn the menu stated $1.25ea, and then the rest of our food was charged as "comida" no big deal, which is food in Spanish. Comida $8.50, which was the torta, and Comida $3.50x2, which was the rice and beans, which by the way I was told was $3 when I asked (in Spanish). For the cost we could have gone to either of the Mexican restaurants on Memorial, and paid roughly $8-$10 less, for friendlier service, and freshly cooked food versus a microwave version. Our waitress never came to check on us, and ask how our food was, refreshed our waters or anything, despite us being the only people there from the time we walked in to the time we left. She sat at the register engrossed in her book. As a matter of fact, she didn't even bring over our ticket, we went to the register when we were done. All in all, we will likely not be back based on the lack of basic courteous interaction one would expect when a patron walks through the door, and checking in during the meal. By the way, I gave her the benefit of the doubt thinking perhaps there was a language barrier and started communicating in Spanish when I realized my husband's rice and beans were missing, I also spoke Spanish when I had to flag her over for a box, and at check out regarding the cost for the torta and rice and beans. Yet, she was still apathetic and uninterested, not even a "thank you" or "de nada" when we left. So, I leave you with this. If you want food that is not freshly prepared off the grill/stove, are into inflated prices and half-hearted customer service, and not as much as a "thank you" when leaving a 20% tip (because minimum wage does not pay one's bills) then this is most definitely the place for you. read more
