One day I decided to see what this Orangetheory Fitness was all about. I walked in and I was…read moregreeted by a lovely staff. Unfortunately I suck at remembering names. Anyway she had set me up to come back for a free class. The very next day I took a class with Coach Sarah. Oh boy was that class intense. I walked out there like WTH was that. Somehow I signed up with Makayla. Now I'm thinking Jatara why would you sign up you know you don't work out often. I went home and told me husband that I signed up for Orangetheory and he laughed. Six months later as I write this Review Orange Theory has truly changed my life. I love the fact the you can attend any Orangetheory in the world still brings music to my ears especially us Yelpers who are always traveling. I love the whole concept about splat points and staying in the Orange (hint that's why it's called Orange Theory) So basically you need to get 12 or more splat points by staying in the Orange zone, if you reached 12 or more points by the end of your 60 minute workout you will burn 20% of the calories you burn throughout the day. So that's Orangetheory in a nutshell. You are never in competition with anyone but yourself. At this particular location the staff and the coaches are awesome. I usually attend the 5:00 am class, the head Coach Melissa usually teaches that class or Danny. Melissa is awesome no matter where she is she can see what's going on and assist you if you are not doing it right which most of the time I'm not (that's why I'm there, much needed guidance). I know people complaint about the prices but I think it's worth every penny, you get the workout that you need and the attention of a coach to teach you how to do it correctly. Your basically paying for a personal training all in one. I love how this location is so personal it makes you feel like you are part of a family. I'm still quite and really don't speak much because I'm just not in a speaking mood at 5am. Well actually all the location make you feel like part of a family. I'm always at some other location, but this is my home gym and because of them I'm addicted to Orangetheory Fitness. At this location I took classes with Head Coach Melissa, Danny, Sarah and Emily. There are other location I have been to and I literally avoid going at certain times because of some coaches playlist yes playlist, you need good music to workout and these coaches here always have a good playlist, but for Stony Brook it doesn't matter who I sign up with or what time I go. I'm getting quality coaching from all and a great playlist. I like the fact that they keep is fun and challenging at the same time. They use IG that's Instagram ( which is new to me ) to keep us updated on all the events and other stuff happening for that month. They also have a app so you can book your classes in advance and see your progress as well. So bottom line, do I recommend OTF? Absolutely!!!!!!

Gold Coast is wonderful! The reformer and barre classes are especially awesome! I've only done 1…read moremat class so far but that was great also. The instructors (Tattiana and Giovanna in particular) are warm, welcoming and super professional, no matter what walk of life you're coming from you'll feel comfortable. Classes are small, I would say average 7 people, but most times less, which allows you to get more individual attention. The barre classes are really what I love about Gold Coast. I was a little intimidated going into the first one, having no dance background and little pilates background. But it was nothing to be intimidated by. Don't get me wrong its hard work and you definitely feel the burn but its totally do able. Within the first two weeks I started to feel changes as far as muscle; I haven't lost any weight from it yet (a little over a month in) but I definitely feel a lot stronger and can do the moves for a lot longer. Pilates studios in general tend to be a little expensive but they offer packages that make it a little easier on your wallet. They also offer a package of 3 classes for $30 for new members which I would totally recommend to try the classes out. You have to go more then just once to give it a fair chance!

The studio is also bright and clean and I was welcomed in by the owner who was friendly and helpful. While other studios let you take reformer class barefoot, they are very strict about their sock policy. My first class I came without since other studios I've never been to a studio with this requirement. Be sure to come prepared with your own or to purchase at the front desk.

So like a geek I was. I did the math. $300 for 10 weeks. 50 classes. 5 Days a week is 6.00 a day for 55 minutes. Which is very reasonable considering pilates classes or zumba classes are like 10-15 a class. After 10 weeks, I saw and felt results. Arms and legs wer more toned. Pants and shirts are too big for me. Starting around week 7, my pants were looser on me. It's a very non intimidating environment. There will always be newcomers and "repeaters" in class. The all female instructors are great motivators and will always show low and high impact moves. Members' fitness ability vary but there is no judgment here. We're all here for our own reasons. I was very comfortable in every session. Orientation: The Sunday before the first class, you will be weighed, measured, get your picture taken and do sit-ups and push-ups. Packets will be handed out about the program and some diet information that will aid in reaching your goals. I personally followed it 80% of the diet they suggested. Come on, I have yelp reviews to write about great places to eat. No one wants to hear about carrots and hummus. At this point, you will need to buy punching gloves. I suggest the ones they have on hand. $40.00. It has a lot of protection when you hit the bag. I looked online and sporting good stores but I liked the one they were offering. Reasonable prices. Week 1 First 10 minutes, I asked myself "Ah crap! what did I get myself into? Sucking air!!!! Face tingled. Week 2 Got sick from a cold. Ab work SUCKS!!!! Pulsing sucks. Toughed it out. Week 3 WTF?? Spiderman push-up?? I can't do that. Push-ups for me. 100 squats?? Crap!!! Still sick. Week 4 Situps are cool. But situp and punch, punch sucks. Push up sucks. Jumping roping is always fun. But another great week. Week 5 Sprained ankle. Missed the entire week. Going through withdrawal. For REAL!! This is the week they do a midpoint assessment. You will get weighed and measurements will be taken to see how you are progressing. The 5 weeks passed, you will see a difference. Week 6 and week 7 was a blur. It went by so fast. Intense stuff Week 8 The good stuff and killer workouts starts here. More cardio. Punch harder. Holding longer. Week 9 CARDIO is more intense with every session. Weights are asked to be a slight heavier than what we started at week 1 & 2. Arms are still burning from upper body workout. Cursing out instructors at this point. Week 10 If I am losing weight, it has to be from sweating too. There's a very very short recovery time. Heart rate is always higher than normal. I cringed when Karen called for 100 Crunches. I sigh when I heard 50 crunches and then another 50 at the end of the session. I come out feeling great and gross from sweating. Final evaluation is on the Sunday after the 10 weeks are over. The winner will win another 10 week session, which is awesome. I will miss the intense workout and the instructors. But if the timing was right, I will do it again in a heart beat.

Equipment isn't updated or replaced when broken and class times were often cut entirely. For the hefty price tag, class times were always being cut without other times to replace them(including the evening class which was the only time I was able to make). I didn't find it worth my money any longer and left for a different kicking boxing studio.

I have been doing Yoga at my gym for months, with the aid of a friend, Chris, who helped me learn…read moremost of the positions. When he invited me to finally attend a 6am class at Bikram Yoga of Bayport, I thought no sweat! But I would find out later, sweat I would be doing. I got there with my gym partner at about 5:30am and the parking lot was completely empty. We met up with another gym friend, Sheri, who also got there early. Rachel the instructor, also a friend, invited us in and went over the pricing. Rachel also gave great tips and advice since it was my first time. I walked into the room and couldn't believe how hot it was. I thought it must have been a mistake! It was hotter inside that room then it was outside. My friend, Sheri, was already in the room comfortable and stretching. She recommended that I do it also to get use to the heat and so I did. Class didn't even start and I was sweating. The guy that invited me, Chris, showed up and he looked like a professional. I didn't know what attire to wear or even what I was doing. I asked him a lot of questions before class started and he explained everything well, as he always does. Finally Rachel walked in and class started. Let me say I have worked out in a gym for years. I have never sweated in a gym like I did 20 minutes in that class. The class we were taking is called "Vinyasa," it is more complete movements and is continuous. Rachel was a wonderful instructor, she had a calming tone in her voice and explained every movement so carefully. Rachel had a very soft music on that helped me focus along with the breathing exercises she went over. I almost gave up many times but I pushed on. I knew every drop of sweat that hit my Mat was weakness leaving my body. I made it through 90 precent of the class before fatigue finally came over me. I was done. I laid there happy to get as fair as I did. After class everyone walks out the room when they were ready, no rush, you can leave when you feel satisfied. There is a locker room you can use or just leave. I stayed behind to talk with my friends. I felt incredible after the class. My body felt loose and I had no tightness in my back. Once again I expressed my excitement for the class and for Rachel as a instructor. I plan to make this a regular part of my life. I hope everyone incorporates Yoga to their lives.

Unfortunately their gym was closed so I planned to walk down the river/board walk. That's when I saw Vivian's Pilates studio and called her up for a quick session before starting my day. Her studio was clean and felt like home, with all types of different Pilates equipment. We did a private one on one session. She was great at cueing me and helping me understand the motions. She has two locations, one in NYC and one in Port Jefferson. I highly recommend her for any personal Pilates training if you're in the area!
