The pilates reformer classes alone are worth dropping by for a killer workout at a reasonable price point. The pilates instructors are all wonderful and their workout/instruction styles vary. Maggy and Cate are two of the best pilates instructors I've ever come across - I take their classes and I walk out feeling like I am both a jelly roll and also the strongest person on planet earth lol. This is the premiere pilates studio in the area - can't tell me otherwise. I appreciate the variety of other classes (yoga flow, barre, dance, strength & conditioning) to make sure you cross-train your body. I was serious about going in regularly but ended up just blocking their number and email, they spam the h*ll out of you to the point that I'm definitely not going to give them more of my time. It was just like previous times when in town visiting family.... she was CURT. Teaching style was OK, no personal touch. Very direct like Bikram, again, stale, as if it was a recording of forced directions, not genuine. The studio AGAIN was still extremely DIRTY. Women's room AGAIN extremely filthy ~ mirror looked like it hadn't been cleaned for weeks, hair all over the floor, could not have been mopped in the past couple weeks either. Smell was bad in the bathroom, mildew and some additional odor undetectable. The entrance to the studio had a couple random YOGA shorts and a USED YOGA mat that she was selling. Couple of sugary drinks in the fridge, no water, otherwise empty, felt nothing like a sacred space at all. This was my third time and last time. I believe in giving businesses a second try, but this studio just got worse and worse.

In the middle, is a narrow path way for the instructor to pass through and to demonstrate. This is not your customary practice, but hey it's a new place so why not try something new? Came in to an "All Levels Yoga" with Chelsea. Chelsea, is an incredibly beautiful person inside and out. It's hard not to be mesmerized by her! However... this definitely felt more like a Beginners class. It is great if you're just starting or you've been out of practice for awhile. Chelsea has all the best intentions, but I tend to get lost (not mesmerized) by her verbiage. In yoga, a flow should be easy to follow just by closing your eyes and listening to what the instructor is saying. You follow through continuously, and that's what creates "The Flow". I've practiced for 9 years now, but for some odd reason, I WAS LOST. My feet were everywhere thinking this position was something new, when in reality, I'VE DONE WARRIOR POSES HUNDREDS OF TIMES. WHY COULDN'T SHE JUST SAY THAT. She ended class with everyone in Savasana... and proceeded to sing. I was definitely thrown off by that, but was strangely comforted by her soothing "Mom Voice" at the same time, And so, the search continues.

I was staying at The Press Hotel, about a 7-10 minute scenic stroll from here and decided to do a drop-in class at noon on a Thursday with Heather. The room is extremely inviting and comfy, with a perfect temperature (I dislike extremely warm rooms) and just enough natural light. Mats face each other, which I'm not used to, but it's definitely the way to optimize the long narrow space. Heather's class was playful, at times a bit more intense, but I'd say this is an all levels class, verging more on the gentle side. What I liked most about it was the departure from "typical" sun salutations. I get the idea that you can expect something a little different from class to class. Heather is an excellent instructor, kind and patient. If I lived in the area, I definitely would be a regular in her class. I'm already looking forward to my next trip to Portland so that I may return to this sweet spot!

The best part was pricing. 14 dollars for a drop in class, 25 for two weeks (introductory rate). They are in mind body so you can sign up in advance, all you need to do is give yourself two extra minutes when arriving to fill out a personal info/acknowledgment form.

It's easy to get to, located just outside of the main tourist and traffic area of downtown, and very rarely do I have any trouble parking. What truly sets SH/FT apart though are the trainers, who quite honestly have become more like family and friends for my husband and I (as well as many of the other members). Not only are the trainers highly educated in health and fitness, but they are constantly improving their knowledge and techniques. For me this has provided an incredibly dynamic personal training program that has given me results that I could have never imagined possible. I have never felt so fit, so motivated and so strong - while also constantly being challenged to take it to the next level. And coming from someone who has been working out since about age 5 this is a pretty bold and authentic statement. This attention to detail also carries over into small group training and classes, where the workouts are always challenging, creative and planned with an ultimate goal of full body fitness in mind. Between the personal training and small group classes, I am excited to attend session because it's fun, challenging and improving my health and wellness. I have been working out at Shift for about 2 years and the change has been incredible for me. We all need to exercise to live a healthy life and I feel fortunate that Shift keeps me motivated and having fun while exercises. Their facility is incredibly clean, bright and welcoming.
