The pilates reformer classes alone are worth dropping by for a killer workout at a reasonable price point. The pilates instructors are all wonderful and their workout/instruction styles vary. Maggy and Cate are two of the best pilates instructors I've ever come across - I take their classes and I walk out feeling like I am both a jelly roll and also the strongest person on planet earth lol. This is the premiere pilates studio in the area - can't tell me otherwise. I appreciate the variety of other classes (yoga flow, barre, dance, strength & conditioning) to make sure you cross-train your body. The myofascial roll and stretch with Renie completely changed my post-workout stretch routine for the better. The studios itself is thoughtfully designed - I genuinely love to go and you will too.

I submitted an inquiry about learning more about Beacon and heard back within the same day and was able to meet the owner and get an assessment scheduled quickly. After the assessment, I jumped right into classes and loved it. Well out-fitted, a great community of friendly and motivating members, and awesome coaches -- Beacon has it all! I think what I appreciated the most about Beacon is the team's attitude towards fitness; fitness can enrich your life and make living your life easier and better. After doing CrossFit for years at a previous box, I was so used to a culture of just wanting to throw around as much weight as possible with no regard to form and listening to my body. At Beacon, I felt supported to really focus on how to properly move my body, how to best challenge my body, and really how to have fun with CrossFit again. I'm currently enrolled in small…read moregroup training and we are working on deadlifts, back squats, pull ups and ring rows, as well as classic CrossFit cardio-based moves (rowing, assault bike, running, etc.). My coach/trainer, Seth, is amazingly helpful and patient in teaching me how to do handstands against the wall (and eventually without the wall). He has a very supportive, encouraging, easy-going personality that really motivates me to do my best. He routinely asks me what moves I want to work on, and we have already covered rope climbs and handstand preps, to name a few. I really enjoy the small group vibe as it gives us a chance to get to know each other better, and we have more time with our coach than we would in a regular CrossFit class. Seth has helped me get to the point where I feel like I can just jump into a regular CrossFit class whenever I want. I'm already almost up to a PR in deadlifts and it has only been a few months (and I took over a year off). It is a bit pricey (I'm paying $240 for 8 classes a month), but I still think it is worth it. You really are getting a lot of time with the coach, even in the small group setting. Highly recommended.

In the middle, is a narrow path way for the instructor to pass through and to demonstrate. This is not your customary practice, but hey it's a new place so why not try something new? Came in to an "All Levels Yoga" with Chelsea. Chelsea, is an incredibly beautiful person inside and out. It's hard not to be mesmerized by her! However... this definitely felt more like a Beginners class. It is great if you're just starting or you've been out of practice for awhile. Chelsea has all the best intentions, but I tend to get lost (not mesmerized) by her verbiage. In yoga, a flow should be easy to follow just by closing your eyes and listening to what the instructor is saying. You follow through continuously, and that's what creates "The Flow". I've practiced for 9 years now, but for some odd reason, I WAS LOST. My feet were everywhere thinking this position was something new, when in reality, I'VE DONE WARRIOR POSES HUNDREDS OF TIMES. WHY COULDN'T SHE JUST SAY THAT. She ended class with everyone in Savasana... and proceeded to sing. I was definitely thrown off by that, but was strangely comforted by her soothing "Mom Voice" at the same time, And so, the search continues.

I was staying at The Press Hotel, about a 7-10 minute scenic stroll from here and decided to do a drop-in class at noon on a Thursday with Heather. The room is extremely inviting and comfy, with a perfect temperature (I dislike extremely warm rooms) and just enough natural light. Mats face each other, which I'm not used to, but it's definitely the way to optimize the long narrow space. Heather's class was playful, at times a bit more intense, but I'd say this is an all levels class, verging more on the gentle side. What I liked most about it was the departure from "typical" sun salutations. I get the idea that you can expect something a little different from class to class. Heather is an excellent instructor, kind and patient. If I lived in the area, I definitely would be a regular in her class. I'm already looking forward to my next trip to Portland so that I may return to this sweet spot!

Jessica has Cardio Tabata class Mondays at 6pm which I would describe as cardio/strength interval training where people rotate between different exercise stations. It is a great workout and keeps your blood pumping and heart rate up throughout the class. On Wednesdays at 6pm, she does a strength bootcamp class which is similar to Mondays class. We use free weights, interval training, "yoga bands" I'm not sure what they're called haha. Classes are a lot of fun and it's a great atmosphere, everyone is really welcoming to newcomers and very friendly. I've only been going for about a month and I can feel myself getting stronger, and I've lost about 10 lbs (I've been eating healthier, too). Jessica is a great instructor, and she also meets with people one-on-one for personal fitness training. At Back Cove they offer other services as well, you can receive individual personal fitness instruction, fitness rehabilitation, senior fitness, metabolic recovery, ski fitness, stroller fitness, and posture alignment (check out their website/facebook page for class schedules). The facility is very clean and well maintained. I definitely recommend the classes. It's a fun time and great workout for all stages of fitness.
