You have to go up and order your food, no server, and if it's not busy you might get lucky to get it with a good time frame. Got the change to visit Pure Country during the Junior League Event. If you are looking for a place to kick up heels, make new friends and experience a slice of country fun. The location is great. Parking was easy, and the atmosphere had great decor. We had the appetizers platter, wings, and nachos. My favorite was the Garlic Wings. They were cooked to perfection and full of flavor. The service was on point, there were over 30 people during this time, and 3 bartenders were working. We even had the owner coming up and helping deliver the food and helping her team. I absolutely love going to this establishment, the $5 cover charge doesn't bother me, because I can definitely understand the money it costs to run such a business. If you cannot afford $5, then that is a you problem, not the bars. You should probably not be going to a bar then, and be at work making that $5 instead. As you can see from the response to my wife Alice's review, the owner cannot take criticism and simply deflects. So what has chanced now that Pure Country is in midtown? [[HIGHLIGHT]]They have leaned even further from being a true Honky-Tonk. Likely do to the their new location and the clientele they attract, the have begun playing more pop and hip-hop.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]This is especially true of their so-called family nights, which have been over run by 16-20 year olds. They need to abandon the "family night" label and just call it what it is, night club night for teens.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They families who regularly showed up on these nights are gone. This is the place to come to learn to line dance and hangout with friends. When we first got here, it was a bit of an older crowd, but the later it got, more young foo came out as well. They have an upstairs and a bar up there. Much less crowded than the downstairs is. Good drinks that are much cheaper than anywhere we have been recently. Food is great bar food, especially when you're a little tipsy. I wish they had two extra things upstairs, one would be more seating, because with the amount of people, there definitely isn't enough seating. Second would be bathrooms upstairs as well. I've been coming here off and on since they opened, more so in the beginning than recently. if I remember right they opened right before or during Covid. Overview: A great venue with good drinks and good food. Service is good. Staff is kind. Line dancing is available. Venue is laid out well, and gets busy as the nights go on. The good: The venue as a whole: They've done really well for themselves as a place to come and get your boot scoot boogie on. They started with a jukebox that you had to pay to play the line dances you want, and only country music was in the jukebox for your selection pleasure. They eventually brought on Vaquera Vikki who I've known since 2015 when she would teach line dance lessons at Gilley's. Vikki has taken over the music situation on the nights she teaches, which is really great since you no longer have to pay to have your line dances played. The drinks: There is a wide variety of liquor drinks per any bar. They have a selection of canned drinks like twisted teas, white claws and some beers. The food: I've only tried the Nachos and the Gourmet Grilled Cheese. The latter is my favorite of the two. It's one of the best grilled cheeses I've had. You get a choice of chips, I always choose the salt and vinegar chips. The dance floor: Its a good dance floor It's not raised or padded, but it's an easy floor to dance on. It's fairly big and can accommodate a decent amount of dancers. The owners and Vikki iterate the importance of no drinks on the dance floor, which I thoroughly appreciate. There's a stage in the corner ish of the dance floor, so whoever is DJ-ing has space to set up whatever gear they need, or when there's a live band there's a fair amount of space. The fair (as in equality): Vikki teaches Tuesdays and Thursdays, and also plays music a little before and definitely after her lessons. I usually do not stay past 10:30 on weeknights as I work the following day, so I'm not sure how music may work later in the evenings on these nights. They are not exclusively using Vikki and let others in on the DJ job. On some weekends (Friday and/or Saturday nights) I've visited, they've had Jeremy McGuigan doing the DJ job. I'm not a fan of Jeremy, as some of the comments he makes towards the crowd and participants can be crude and cruel. But he has good music and fairly plays musical requests. The decent: When they first opened I remember live bands playing music more frequently than now. I'm not a huge live band person when I want to get my dance on, as they don't perform a huge set of dances. My friends and I would wrack our brains trying to figure out what dances we could do to their sets. I prefer a DJ/jukebox when I choose to go dancing, so I like what they're doing now for the music. The live bands are fewer it seems. This part is neither good nor bad, just personal preference. My personal dislikes: Because of how well they've been doing, evenings get really busy real quick. It's great for business, but not great for those of us that want to dance. It becomes hard to traverse the place from our seats to the dance floor, and even the dance floor is becoming packed and hard to dance. Not all dancers know the dance floor etiquette. Some new dancers will dance big and take large steps, when instead they should take smaller steps on a packed dance floor. On the same note, when there is a song to which people do swing dancing, a couples line dance and a line dance, again the spacing isn't always known or respected. It is nice when the DJ will iterate line dancers in the middle, couples around and then swing dance outside on the far circle. I'm sure the more the patrons come around they'll remember the dance floor etiquette. Additionally Friday and Saturdays, they close the front entrance and have everyone come in through the back door. They check id's at this time and give you a stamp on the hand. Last week (April 29th or 30th) with a live band they charged a $5 cover, which was the first cover I've ever heard them charge. I understand the layout of the venue to have ID checks through the hall in the back, as the front door area is pretty open, so creating a funnel to check IDs there is more difficult. However ID's are not checked on any other night, so I'm not sure the thought process there. Fridays and Saturdays become even more packed than Thursdays (I haven't been on a Tuesday in months). I am not a fan of crowds so I don't anticipate myself visiting anymore on Fridays or Saturdays unless it's for an event (friend's birthday or something of the like) Additional information: There were some miscommunications in the past between myself and the owner, of our own conversations and other persons telling her I did something I did not. However, she was willing and open to have a conversation about all issues. We were able to reconcile and clear the air. read more

They also offer a variety of couples dance lessons from mixers like the barn dance to a traditional 2-step and even swing. No other location around caters to such a broad range of country dance styles. While I have my preferred dance styles, I appreciate the opportunity to expand my repertoire. And they post their lessons calendar for the whole month so you can see what lessons are coming up. That's not all that makes them unique. Their DJ Jeremy McGuigan pays attention to the room and tries to make sure to play songs that get everyone on the dance floor. Why this doesn't show up as the number 1 country bar on Yelp in Reno is beyond me. I'm a recent transplant to Reno (forgive me locals), and I had friends flying in on a Thursday. A quick search for country bars on Yelp led us to Pure Country Canteen. Don't let the exterior fool you. We pulled into a strip mall thinking we were in the wrong place, but one look at all the trucks at the end of the parking lot was all we needed to see. We walked in around 8 pm on a Thursday to a packed dance floor for line dancing lessons. The music was great. The service was excellent. The crowd ran the gamut of newly turned 21 year olds to three generations of families. Our bartender was friendly and social. Had a couple good laughs and a handful of fairly priced drinks. Inside is a good atmosphere, but when you start the evening off with being ripped off, it definitely leaves a sour taste in your mouth. 6 girlfriends and I came to have a good night, but that is how it started. She said it will be $35 total. We wanted to pay separate. 3 girls gave her 5 dollar bills, and I was paying with a 20. I told her just give me the 15 and I'll give her the 20. She would not give it back. Then was extremely rude saying my 20 was paying for the other 3 girls who ALREADY paid. We kept going back and forth but she would not listen. She was very rude. I would like to note everyone in this situation was stone cold sober, there is no confusion as to what happened.
