We paid for two coats of paint but they only painted once. We requested a water leak in the toilet to be fixed and they changed some parts but the leak is still present. Before the big move, I would only be in town a few days across multiple weeks but Alex met me at my home and on my schedule. I called and emailed 5 other handymen and explained in detail and with pictures what I needed done (kitchen cabinets, backsplash, crown molding in all bedrooms and living room, multiple window replacement, installing driveway lights) but Alex was the only one who came to see the house and he gave me a fair estimate that he stuck to. We had a leak in our front door and noticed Hopkins & Porter was a local DMV handyman business with…read moregood online reviews. They turned out to be a huge ripoff. Over the phone with them, we mentioned the leak, shared our ideas on some quick fixes such as sealing the bottom area around the door to see if that resolves the issue, and provided some photos that clearly showed the potential gaps to be sealed. We were communicated that Hopkins & Porter has a policy where they charge an upfront $150 fee that includes an inspection and where the balance is applied to subsequent time and materials work. We were led to believe that a technician would come, inspect the front door leak and some other home interior issues we had, and initiate some fixes. However, when the technician arrived, he only inspected the front door leak for 8 minutes, dismissed taking a look at our other issues, dismissed doing any quick fixes we had mentioned over the phone, but rather asked for the $150 check, and left. He did offer his thoughts on needing to replace the allegedly custom design door weatherstrip ($$$) and sealing a side of the door as well. That's fine but we didn't understand why he wasn't equipped to seal the door area as we discussed over the phone to see whether that would resolve our leak. After some email exchanges following the 8-minute inspection where we indicated this wasn't the job we signed on for, and Hopkins & Porter claiming they would only do things "the right way" (funny how that never came up in the initial phone call), trying to guilt-trip us for expecting an affordable solution, but at least offering to void our $150 check. We wouldn't have even engaged with this company if we knew they would just ignore everything we requested, take our upfront fee, and come up with a large estimate. After 2 days waiting for an estimate of the costs, we were fed up and asked that they go ahead with voiding our check, ending this debacle. Several weeks later, I took a look at my bank statement and was shocked that rather than voiding the check, they deposited my $150 check a few days after our last correspondence. It's disturbing that Hopkins & Porter resorts to taking advantage of potential customers by: - Charging $150 for an 8-minute "inspection" on an issue that was clearly shown in our photos, without fixing anything as we were led to believe - Parroting back potential fixes that we already mentioned when we shared the issue, without actually fixing anything - Claiming to tear up our check but not doing so, instead waiting several days later to cash it in To be honest, I've never seen such dishonesty in a local DMV handyman business.

During a recent home improvement project to install hardwood flooring, I removed the laminate…read moreflooring that was already in place. Upon removal, I noticed that the stairs were not only badly damaged (from a previous owner's work), but were failing in multiple areas when accessed underneath. This was no longer a home improvement project, but now became a safety issue. I contacted Jonathan on a Tuesday afternoon letting him know that we had a staircase that was in need of repair. I reached out to 10 companies (that listed on their Yelp reviews that they offered carpentry) requesting a carpenter or carpentry skills, but only Jonathan and another company indicated that they could repair stairs that were damaged and in need of repair. The other company was not as responsive and indicated that they were fully booked through the summer, and that they didn't have the time. After texting and calling Jonathan throughout the day Tuesday, Jonathan indicated that he would come out the following morning to assess the damage with one of his highly skilled employees. Jonathan and his skilled carpenter were timely and direct in what needed addressed. He indicated that we would replace 10 of the 13 treads, and that they would reinforce all of the stairs underneath with 2x4's and other materials. Jonathan and his skilled carpenter were not only efficient, timely, and responsive, but the quality exceeded all expectations. Jonathan's carpenter worked nonstop Wednesday (not even a break!) and finished ahead of schedule on Thursday. The high quality work was much more than we had anticipated, and the price was reasonable (considering the urgency and timing). I highly recommend Jonathan and his company. We plan to use them for improvements and projects. Top Notch!

It was definitely a stressful situation, but Lee was very helpful and responsive to my questions and requests. Although Lee did not perform the job himself, Ivan and his team came out to repair the drywall and replace the carpet. Ivan was really great - he was courteous and efficient throughout the whole project, which took about 1.5 days to complete. Some highlights were: 1) The crew was able to start working almost immediately after I called Master's Construction. 2) Ivan worked very hard to find the closest match to my existing carpet. It sounded like he was checking out quite a few places until he found someone all the way in Richmond that had our carpet! (FYI, I live in Falls Church.) 3) Ivan ended up re-painting all the walls of my bedroom to ensure that the paint color was consistent throughout. He got an extra star because he is a great guy! Alberto agreed to fix the finish on our dining table. Needless to say he made it worse and left it in a big mess! He did not sand before staining and left a sticky gluey mess. He was unable to remove the sticky mess. The table would have been ruined had someone else who knew what to do not come along and sanded and redid the finish as it was supposed to be. This was a very expensive table that needed minor work...that became a major problem. Great guy, but won't use again. This was not his best project for sure!
