Overall, I really enjoy the Purple Carrot experience. It makes meal planning easy, and I like knowing that I'm eating clean, healthy foods. My husband and I are in our early 30s, with no kids. I am a vegan and my husband is not (though 90% of his meals are plant-based), though we both enjoy PC. Pros: - Been using PC for 7 months and have never had a delivery problem (always been on time). - Easy ordering experience on a great website. - Consistent quality with fresh ingredients (literally always fresh). - Recipes are easy to follow, and they give you the recipe book for all the meals that week, not just for the specific meals you order. - Customer service is absolute STELLAR and so friendly. Have had a couple of mishaps (one my fault, one their fault) and they were quick to resolve and almost go 'overboard' with correcting. - Meals are clean, healthy and usually tasty (and incredibly visually appealing which is a big plus to me when it comes to eating). - Meals vary every week, and rarely repeat. I don't think I've ever seen so much variety with any other service. Most of the meal options are considered healthy, but they usually include 1 or 2 'treat' meals (like a grilled cheese) which I appreciate :) - Packaging is always going to feel a lot when it comes to meal kits, but PC uses the least amount of packaging of all meal kits I've tried. With that, the food is always still cold and fresh when I unpack it. - Best meal kit for vegans, plant-based diets, or those just looking to eat healthier or reduce their animal-product intake. - This service has greatly improved my own plant-based cooking ability. - Servings are (usually) generous. Cons: - Price point will be a barrier for some people (about $10 per serving). However, pricing is on par with the other meal kits on the market. You are paying for the convenience of more easily eating 'clean', not having to meal plan, and not going food shopping- which is why I use this service. - Taste rating of each meal usually ranges from 'okay' to 'pretty good'. We have only rated a few meals as 'amazing', however only 1 meal has ever been rated as 'bad'. I am okay with this as my driver with PC is to eat clean and healthy (and have variety with my meals), and the average meal is certainly tastier than if I had cooked a meal myself without direction. My husband and I have agreed on all taste ratings. Tips: - While the recipes are easy to follow, I would recommend prepping all ingredients (like chopping, peeling, dicing etc.) before you do the cooking. The recipe book will split these tasks up, but I find it hard to get the timing right (ie. something might burn in the pan while I'm chopping the onion). - If something is wrong with your box, please let PC know! They are so happy to help. - If you get a meal that has avocado in it, plan on eating that meal last. They arrive super underripe (which is preferred) and take at least a week until it's edible. - Being that all food is plant-based, you are not under the same 'deadlines' to consume the meals as you might be with a meat-based meal kit. I haven't cooked some meals until 8/9 days after delivery and the food is still fresh and excellent. - If you order a meal that contains pasta, plan on adding your own pasta to the meal as they never provide enough. PC provides a regular serving of the pasta, but most humans eat 2-3x that amount (or maybe that's just my family!). Here are some of our favorite meals: - Pesto Beet Bowls - Roasted Carrot Hummus Bowls - BBQ Tempeh with Rice Pilaf - Spinach and Artichoke Grilled Cheese (SO GOOD) - Crispy Black Bean Tacos (YUM) All things considered, I do continue to recommend PC to my friends and family. It is incredibly unfortunate that I have to even post this review, since I know that reviews can hurt a company and their reputation. When I first started with Purple Carrot (several years ago now) I was so excited. I wanted to learn more about plant based cooking and was so happy to get my box and learn to cook delicious meals in ways I didn't think I could. Learning about new ingredients I had never cooked with and creating meals that were impressive based on what I thought to myself that there would be no way it would taste good based on the ingredients I was using. All great, super happy, loved the meals up until approx a year ago. I started to notice that there would be many times a box would show up, I'd unpack everything and immediately would find an ingredient that was already bad. A squishy cucumber, a crushed tomato from poor packaging, a bad pepper, a moldy garlic head, the list went on. At first I tried to ignore it and would just run out to the store and buy the bad ingredient to replace it and sort of overlook this problem. But as the trend continued I finally reached out to customer service and they offered me a $10 credit to my account and a weak apology... hmmm. ok. So I considered cancelling because even getting someone to respond to you is incredibly difficult (I could not find a phone number to call on their website anywhere mind you and their customer form does not send a reply email). Fast forward to the ultimate frustration. I knew I'd be out for surgery and unable to drive for a few weeks, so I figured I'd get a delivery so I could cook some meals. To my amazement 2 out of the 3 meals came with bad ingredients. SO now, not being able to drive I have paid $72 for one meal...because I can't go out and replace the bad ingredients. And then I skipped this upcoming week and now see a charge on my card which means they are sending me another box. I am completely, utterly fed up with this company and read another review which shows a customer service number is on the meal cards so I plan on calling first thing tomorrow. If they do not reverse the charge for this week and credit me for 2 meals worth from the bad box I will be disputing with my credit card company. As I said before - this is incredibly disappointing because all things aside they do put out some really good recipes/meals and I have enjoyed learning new ways of cooking. However I will NOT put up with such a lack of poor customer service anymore and will NOT be recommending them to friends/family either. This company is absolutely horrible. Updating my review with photos of the rotten food I received. One of my boxes had wilted leaves and hard waxy tortillas. I put shipments on pause, yet it was shipped anyways and I was charged. I cancelled and contacted them, asking them to cancel the last order. They never bothered to reply. The next box arrived with no recipe book, so we couldn't cook anything. A bag had a cracked container of sauce that leaked all over the other ingredients. The next box had brown wilted chives, kale with sticky, wet, rotten brown leaves, and a lime with a completely rotten outside. It looked diseased. So not only does this company charge you when not authorized, they ignore messages, and send boxes that are missing things and have rotten ingredients. Do NOT do business with them. Check out their BBB reviews as well to see that they argue with customers who are unhappy using all caps and tell them they can't help them. At $72 a box, it is NOT worth it. I contacted them two more times, to which they replied that they will forward my feedback on, but they refuse to do anything else to make it right. Our first set of meals arrived completely warm and had to be thrown out. The packaging was nice and had plenty of insulation and icepacks, but I don't see how this will work with the frozen meals being on a delivery truck all day. When I contacted Purple Carrot they did refund the order, but would not allow me to use my first order coupon discount on the next order and told me it could only be used on the first order. They have horrible customer service when trying to resolve the issue, it's completely like talking to a wall and they just follow the script and you can't talk to them in common sense terms. Stay away and just go to the grocery store and get Amy's microwave meals instead. read more

BEWARE if you want to cancel you need to do it THE DAY your first box arrives. Even though they tell you that you have until Thursday to skip that week (My delivers were on Tuesdays) If you cancel, you HAVE to get the next Box. I noticed they charged me the next day after the first box arrived, before I even saw what the next weeks menu was. So, they will charge you whether you want it or not. You can pause and then when a menu comes up you want you resume and it's already paid, but it's kind of a scam not to have a trial period. I mean my box arrived yesterday, I made one meal and my husband wasn't into it, so I said I'd cancel it tomorrow. I don't need that much for just one vegan in the family. I asked them not to ship the box, and they sent this as a reply: "I am so sorry for the confusion here. Our order-cancellation deadline of 11:59PM on Tuesdays has passed. I apologize that we have no way of recalling your package for next week at this point. That will be your last shipment from us. We hope that this isn't too much of an inconvenience, and that you'll still be able to enjoy these meals this week - and if not, that you might have a hungry friend or neighbor who could enjoy them on your behalf." Also, I didn't get any delivery time window or notice. I happened to go out to get the mail at 2pm and saw a box under the Avocado tree (at least they put it in the shade) No notice of delivery... Nothing. I think a vegan delivery service is an awesome thing. But Purple Carrot has a lot of things to iron out before they would ever get my business or my friend's and family's. To start, what my online account said my delivery start date was and what the email said were different. Warning. At that point I not only canceled membership before receiving anything. I also deleted my membership. A week later FedEx delivers Purple Carrot to my door. PC said they would refund my money. Waiting to see if that happens. Here's my review. You are suppose to get 3 meals, I got 2. There is a LOT of packaging. Waste in my book isn't good. Most of it isn't able to be recycled. Veggies? I got the family size for just me so I could eat it for two meals for two days. In the two meals, you will not get even ONE servings of vegetables or fruit. In fact for one meal, not even a serving of veg or fruit for the four meals combined! Being a vegan is about a complete plant based diet. It's not all grains with veg as the condiment. For one meal, I had two potatoes to make potato salad for 4 people. By the time I cut out all of the black chunks, there wasn't even one potato left. Buns for the jack fruit BBQ sandwiches weren't of high quality. I got 2 CANS of jack fruit. One meal was really just brown rice, tofu and sauce. I could shop and make these meals for about half of what they charge, probably less. You're paying for the service of not having to think. Buy a few vegan cookbooks - I love Chef Chloe, go on Pinterest, make a list and shop. Overcook so you have leftovers. Freeze stuff. So not worth the money. Super disappointed. read more

Super happy to see an entirely vegan meal prep service on the market. I used this service for about two months and ordered the two person menu for just myself. I may try this again in the future if the menu looks tasty enough, but for now have the service paused. Pros: - Food is tasty. - Plenty of food, each recipe usually lasts me three or four meals (just cooking for myself). - Good variety. - Good for people trying to eat vegan that don't know where to start. Cons: - Meals take WAY too long to prepare, much longer than the time specified on the recipe - Instructions are unnecessarily complicated/confusing/vague. - A bit more expensive than if I were to buy groceries, and probably much more expensive for folks living in a less expensive city than me. - For people who have never cooked with tofu or some other "unusual" vegan ingredients, the instructions are not the best. I substituted my own knowledge of tofu prep for the meals containing tofu. - A few of the meals require unusual prep items, like a food processor, which I do not own. - For the price, I expected all of the ingredients to be organic, and some are, but not all. - Packaging is plastic bags. I would prefer paper bags or cardboard, something to reduce the amount of plastic being used. - They used OnTrac as the shipper, who have notoriously bad customer service. My first shipment arrived after dinner time, when I had been planning to make a Purple Carrot meal for that day's dinner. My biggest pet peeve is that this ended up taking much longer and being more complicated than what I can make on my own by going grocery shopping. I have been vegan for almost 10 years, so I can throw together a simple meal with just a few ingredients and prefer making simpler meals with less cleanup. I wish that the instructions specified exactly how many and what kinds of kitchen tools, pots, pans, etc, are needed, and were not in a giant paragraph for each "step". I'd spend a few minutes before starting cooking by reading through the instructions just to figure out what I'd be doing and writing notes when I found something confusing. The instructions could be clearer - for example, it says "add to pot" but there are 2 pots going so which pot do I add it to? Overall the food tasted pretty good and I'm glad this is an option for people new to cooking and/or new to cooking vegan meals. You may find that after a few months, it's not worth it to you price-wise. I canceled my service based on my first experience. Courtney was kind enough to refund my money and offer a free shipment if I would start again. Last week, I signed back up. First shipment was right on time and the food was delicious. Second shipment was supposed to arrive yesterday -- it did not. According to the tracking number, the parcel was not received by the shipping company. So, again, I've had to contact Purple Carrot to inquire about the missing shipment and ask for a refund. If you enjoy a high level of frustration, aggravation and disappointment, this is the food service for you. read more

If this review was only for the quality of food and ease of recipes it would be close to 5 stars. Unfortunately where purple carrot is ruining their business is with customer service. There is no way to contact a real human. If you are a paying customer you should be able to call or contact an individual to clear up problems. Last week our box did not arrive. When we check the DHL shipping it claimed it had been delivered but by 9pm there was still no box. We emailed that evening because even though they say delivery could arrive as late as 9 there Is no way to contact a person past 5pm. That is ridiculous. The next day no reply. The following day still no email reply so we emailed again and all they said was they would refund the cost of the box. That was it. No apology, no follow up to see where our box went. So our planned 3 dinners that week didn't happen. Purple carrot..if you care get some real customer service people that paying customers can contact. Stop using DHL, they suck and aren't worth the slightly cheaper price then UPS. read more

I wish I had read these reviews before trying a free trial of Purple Carrot...... I was gifted a trial from my dad's wife, and was looking forward to trying some new recipes and making one less trip to the grocery store. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a disappointing experience in terms of the quality of the food supplied, the packaging, the user interface of the website (& ease of canceling) and especially the customer service. In addition to there being an excess of plastic packaging (ironic?), the pre-cut produce I received in my trial shipment was dry (had to throw it away), carrots were not firm, nothing was organic, and I wasn't excited about the recipe suggestions. After thinking I had canceled the automatically renewing subscription correctly on the website, I noticed a charge for $78 on my credit card a couple weeks later. I emailed their customer support immediately (6 days before the box was scheduled to be shipped), and requested to cancel the shipment and receive a refund. However, in the response I received 2 days later, I was told that this would be impossible, since the deadline to cancel was 7 days prior to the shipment and their shipping facilities had already begun preparing the order. "At this time, we're unable to stop your shipment from being delivered. We hope that this isn't too much of an inconvenience, and that you'll still be able to enjoy these meals this week - and if not, that you might have a friend or neighbor who could enjoy them on your behalf!" Seriously? So, I received the second shipment. The vegetables, again, were sub-par: the lettuce packaged for a salad was inedible - dry where it was cut and some pieces completely wilted (had to throw away); the avocado had white mold on one side and was squishy, brown when I cut it open (toss); the broccolini was also very dry at the ends and beginning to wilt (toss). After re-confirming that I did not enjoy this service, I again requested a refund for the $78 and was denied. They offered $15 for the spoiled ingredients, not taking into account that my ENTIRE EXPERIENCE was spoiled; not only was I unable to prepare the recipes as suggested, but their customer service left a horrible taste in my mouth. There should really be a simpler process to cancel from the website - clearly I am not the only person to experience this issue. To summarize: too much plastic packaging, vegetables sub-par & some inedible, nothing organic, expensive for what you get, cancellation process not clear until it's too late, customer service unhelpful and difficult to access, and you will NOT receive a refund for a delivery that you were unable to cancel (even with plenty of notice). My mom's friend "gifted" me a subscription box for a week. Nice, right? Until I received a bill for $73, and another box of goods the following week that I did NOT order, do NOT want, and have been refused a refund for. Guess who else this happened to? My poor mother! I would expect these predatory marketing tactics for some sleazy late night sales company, but like, a plant-based meal service co-authored by Mark Bittman of the NYT? I think the recipes are really great. I've been using their website for awhile. I do think they need to have more control over their ingredients. I am 99% sure my horrible food poisoning experience was from the spinach in the chickpea crepes given that the other people that ate it also got sick. I have never had it before from purchasing from the grocery store and cooking myself. I had to cancel services for this reason despite great recipes. read more

I have enjoyed their meals for the past few weeks, however I had 1 meal which made me sick (collard green sushi rolls) and 1 meal that I half-ed the spice for tacos and was still so hot my mouth went numb and was completely inedible. I contacted customer support regarding the sweet potato tacos and they refused to credit the cost of the meal which I did not eat and had to throw out. They're reason is here below: 'Although it's great to hear you've enjoyed our meals each week, I'm sorry you had a negative experience with the spice in the Sweet Potato Tacos. Each week, our culinary team strives to include new and exciting flavors. However, taste buds are not all the same, and we recognize that here at Purple Carrot. We are unable to credit for this delivery, as it arrived complete and in usable condition. However, rest assured we'll relay this feedback to our full team. This way they can consider possible adjustments to similar meals in the future. Of course, we're unable to improve without this sort of honest feedback from our customers. If we can assist with anything else, don't hesitate to let us know!' I am still awaiting response from my email back to this one but in the mean time I have cancelled my subscription. I highly recommend Green Chef vegan meals and am switching back. UPDATE: Their Customer Service responded back after a few more emails and after my initial post on here and gave me in their words a 'courtesy credit' of $25 which I appreciate. I am perplexed how they will retain customers with this sort of customer service and I believe they should update their customer service policies as a company, there are a lot of other options out there in this market creating loyal customers is the only way to go. read more

Signed up for the TB12 Performance Meals; Have been receiving them for over a year until I recently canceled because of poor delivery service. They choose to use LaserShip which frequently delivers past 9pm. While I love the meals and find the recipes both delicious and easy, I will not accept deliveries from a third party with a magnet decal to my property past dusk. Sorry. Food, packaging, recipes, price point--all decent. They just decided that penny pinching with LaserShip is better than providing a consistent delivery experience (like Hello Fresh & others whom we use). I get my other meals delivered by 3pm on the day promised. With Purple Carrot some nights my meals arrive at 7pm, 9pm, or I wake up to find the box halfway down my driveway (didn't even attempt to get it to my porch). If they ever decide to switch to UPS/FedEx, I'll be back. As mentioned, the recipes are great; produce is generally fresh (had a problem here and there, but PC's customer service quickly took care of it), and prep is easy. At least now I have 52+ weeks of previous recipe cards I can use to grocery shop/prepare. read more

I wish I would have read these reviews before ordering. People seem to be having similar issues with delivery and customer service. I received a gift card for a free delivery to try, which I never should have used but hey, it was free. I never received that delivery so tried to cancel and was put on hold instead. After a couple weeks my account was charged and they refuse to reverse their mistake. They now agreed to permanently cancel which doesn't help me now. I explained that I've since moved out of state and never received my previous delivery. They don't care. All and all, never got to review the meals, but I can say the customer service is well worth never ordering from them. Not even a discount was offered. As someone who works in customer service I can tell you, not a way to win over customers. I would avoid this service and use one of the many competitors!! read more

I had a similar experience to many others on here. I really wanted to love this company as it is all vegan. I tried a week of the meals, realized that the ingredients were non-organic and contained unnecessary preservatives, so emailed them to cancel. A month later I received an email that a box had just been delivered. This was Thanksgiving week, extreme inconvenience. I called and was told that they now had a new cancellation process because the old method was not working. I asked for a discount and was given a $25 discount that I had already been entitled to. I'm wondering why that had not already been applied. Then was told there would be another box coming the next week. They refused to stop the shipment or give me any type of discount even though they had a problem with their cancellation process. Another huge inconvenience as I had no plans to cook this week. Just received the unwanted box and have already noticed that one bag contains a cucumber that is pure mush. The liquid mush has leaked onto the other ingredients. Very poor business practices. If I had been given a discount on the unwanted boxes I would be a possible customer if they were to offer all organic in the future. Now I would never do business with them again. read more

I have been using Purple Carrot for a few months and noticed that even though they arrived cold, some of the vegetables needed to be prepared as soon as they arrived or they go bad. I also received two of the same meals in the box and not what they said they had sent me. The box wasn't properly taped and arrived partially opened. I can't find an easy way to communicate this with Purple Carrot so decided to cancel service until they have an easy way to communicate. read more

Note of caution: if you sign up for a trial box, you're automatically subscribed to the service. Found that one out the hard way. I'm allergic to coconut, and my second (surprise) box (with a surprise credit card charge) arrived with a coconut-laden recipe. No phone number could be found, so I went ahead and messaged them: "Hey, this happened, what's my next move here?" Customer service response was basically, "Too bad, so sad - you should've reviewed the meal plan in advance." I responded with best wishes for them to get their act together. Never even received the first box - they must have sent it to the wrong address (tracking page said East Elmhurst NY...I'm in Manhattan), even though I double and triple checked my account. I also have a feeling it's got wasteful packaging, similar to Blue Apron. We've respectfully asked them to fix it and they don't listen. Also, today, items exploded (a yogurt) and the recipe book was missing. I need to check what else is missing. We canceled PC the moment our first delivery arrived and we saw the insane amount of single-use plastic packaging for each meal. We were very disappointed a vegan meal service wouldn't be more environmentally conscious. The meals themselves were fairly good, but the prep work was much more than we anticipated, especially given we signed up for PC to make dinners faster and easier. PC really only gathers ingredients for you, nothing else. Everything arrives completely un-prepped. They don't even include the recipes; you have to log in and find that week's meals to print or view online. read more

We've been using purple carrot for three weeks now and are never disappointed. (the only things that bums me is all of the packaging but I'm pretty sure that is hard to get around) Back to the positive. I received my first box today. Wow, that's A LOT of packaging. And I was under the impression that this was a farm to table type of meal kit, considering it is vegan. I had 3 CANS of food in my box. I don't use canned foods in my regular cooking and was a bit shocked to find 3 cans in the kit. I made my first meal this evening, the pumpkin chili. After emptying the contents from the bag I found a rotten onion and cilantro. Luckily I had onions on hand. The cilantro was such a small amount I didn't even bother substituting it with another fresh herb. I followed the recipe exactly, but ended up cooking for a bit longer because the canned beans weren't cooked all the way. Even after an additional 10 min. simmer the beans were not edible. The smell was great, the taste, not so much. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't $24/meal good. I would also never pay $12 for a bowl of chili. My husband and daughter thought the meal was edible, but didn't finish and proceeded to mill about the kitchen looking for other things to eat. We were so disappointed with this meal that we don't even want to attempt the other two meals. After inspecting those meals I noticed that the eggplant has several soft spots, probably from a heavy can sitting on it during transit. The spinach was already blackening and wilting. I will not be utilizing these rotten ingredients and it's totally not worth $72/box, especially when you have to use your own food or go out to the store to get ingredients to replace the rotted ones. Some good and bad things about it -- I'm trying out a series of delivery services. All meal services use a TON of packaging, so environmental impact is a real problem. Also, note that with Purple Carrot the posted calorie counts don't include any oil for cooking. If I followed the recipe, it added at least 120 calories per serving. The servings ARE generous though. The bottom line with Purple Carrot was that even ethnic recipes were pretty bland, the recipes took more time than promised, and the produce was inconsistent. There are so many good vegan recipes out there for those of us who want a few vegan meals a week. This is only worthwhile if you really can't shop but have time to cook. Pros: a lot of vegetables (most meal delivery services are very low on vegetables); nice to get one recipe's worth of an odd ingredient; extremely nice staff and they gave me a credit on so-so ingredients Cons: mixed bag on produce (excellent oyster mushrooms, sorta sad lettuce and green beans, surprisingly tasteless carrot); odd timing on one recipe (1 minute to cook green beans?); even ethnic recipes are bland; recipes took longer to cook than promised (and I'm an experienced cook); calorie count is WAY off. read more

Full disclaimer - I am not a vegan; nor am I a vegetarian. I signed up for The Purple Carrot simply because I wanted to try incorporating more fruits and vegetables in my diet. As a fan of Mark Bittman, I was uber excited when I first found out that he would be partnering with the couple who started the Purple Carrot. I quickly signed up and didn't wait too long for my first shipment. Overall, some of the recipes were hits and some were just... too healthy and fibrous to digest. The recipes I enjoyed were the creamy baked pasta w/spinach & sushi night. Others were more like, "meh" & most definitely not worth revisiting. At the end of my 3-weeks with the Purple Carrot, I actually ended up missing eating dairy and meat more than ever. I guess... overall I have mixed feelings about the Purple Carrot. I certainly think it is worth checking it out maybe for one or two shipments... but for me, probably not going back anytime soon. I'll stick to my ways of eating with meat. And dairy. Received three boxes. All three boxes arrived 4-5 days late, boxes were opened, produce was unacceptable. Despite complaints and promises, a third box arrived unauthorized. I wish I had been more thorough in reading the reviews. I won't do business with this company again. read more

Absolutely awful customer service. They let me create an account with an invalid email address (.con), and so when I went to login, it said the email address wasn't in the system so I recreated an account thinking there was an error. Unbelievable considering the service involves alerting you through email about your deliveries. There was no way to know what had happened until I received two boxes. They refused to refund the extra box. Food was meh. Go with Sunbasket. Update: Yeah, you are able to verify email addresses, it's very easy and most websites do it. Just because your company chooses not to doesn't mean you aren't able. Get the software needed, not that hard. read more

So this program has really great portion sizes, but the meals are just uninspiring and nasty. For simple things like a cauliflower kale salad, it took about an hour to prepare. These meals were so uninspiring and have simple ingredients that prove that this meal delivery kit should be about half the cost that it really is. I was looking for something a little bit more chef inspired and not Gentrified eastern food. I'm just going to look at plant-based options that I can go to the store and make myself. read more

Purple Carrot is awful!! My first box arrived a day late, two key ingredients were completely bad, and three others were questionable. Second box finally arrived tonight, three days late and crushed, so the goo inside the cool pouch was all over everything. You can't plan your meals around the inconsistent delivery, and old ingredients are unappetizing. Instead of cooking tonight as planned, I'm grubhubbing it - spending more dollars. Also, crud tons of plastic! Don't waste your dollars or your good green karma by going plant based by using this meal box service. Very disappointing!! read more
