Got a toogoodtogo bag from here at 8 pm on a weekday. It was great value for money. A large sourdough boule, a small baguette, a biscuit, and a pastry. Everything was tasty. The bread was slightly dry but I suppose that's to be expected with a toogoodtogo bag. I wish they would slice the large boule because that was hard to do at home! Maybe I'll ask in-store next time. I was looking for a nearby lunch spot that could deliver relatively quick and came across Fornax Bread Company. I ordered their chipotle chicken sandwich and it was pretty good! You can choose the bread you want, and customize how you like it. The sauce on the sandwich was good, and the chicken was seasoned well. Overall it was a solid sandwich that did the job. read more

I am writing specifically and only about the breads. All 3 of the different types I tried, from baguette to boule, were too dense. It was a Monday afternoon, the breads should have been from that morning but might have been from the afternoon before, the interiors were thick, dense, with a hard crust, not with much taste. I understand from other reviews that they have new owners 2 years back. I'd not been there in a number of years and wanted to try them again. I really hate doing this to a small local business, I got a few loaves of bread from here today for the first time and it was legitimately the worst bread I've ever bought (not at a grocery store) in my life. I don't know if I was getting the last couple loaves of the week on a Friday afternoon but they were extremely dry. We all ended up eating our sandwiches "naked" because it was so bad. I've loved this place since I was a kid. They recently went under new management, so the place feels a bit less homey and cluttered but is more aesthetic and clean. I love their bread, and their combos are honestly so worth it! The service is amazing! I got a combo for pickup, and my salad was missing its chicken. I let them know, and they offered me a fix! Came here for the first time today and was very impressed. I initially came in for cupcakes for myself but wanted to try other things if they looked appealing. I was greeted once I came In by a very nice young woman who was super helpful as a first timer. She was gracious and happy to help me, such a true rarity in Boston these days. Really nice bread place in Roslindale. Has a variety of type of breads. The challah is top notch, nicely braided, with a good chewy texture. The ham and cheese croissant was decent, though some of the layers of croissant were more dense than I had anticipated. Run dont walk from this place...WORST sandwich I ever had!!!!...this place is under new ownership...the owner of the Mexican restaurant at the corner of Washington and Corinth streets and the wireless store across the street, is the new owner since 2023. No ambience, a menu dressed up to give the impression that your buying a "artisan" sandwich...I am not exaggerating..the sandwiches were inedible and overpriced...to begin with the bread was rock hard..it was overly toasted..but in my opinion stale bread was a being used in the kitchen..and covered up by the over toasting. When I complained, I received a blank stare. It wasn't just our sandwiches but other people's there as well. We paid over 30.00$ for two inedible sandwiches and two bags of chips, that were the free sides. The contents were no better either, my BLT was a mess...it had two slices of greasy overcooked bacon, a small piece of lettuce and one slice of rubbery tomato with a glob of dressing. The other sandwich which was a chicken salad, was tasteless mess, its bread was so toasted/stale that you couldn't bite into it. Period! Needless to say, we didn't finish our sandwiches. Food I've tried: - WALNUT CURRANT SCONE ($2.95): very nice and crumbly scone - simple, yet delicious. - BUTTERMILK BISCUIT ($4.50): this is a crumbly biscuit, with a bit more springiness in the dough than the scone. Initially I thought that the dough was a tad too salty, but the more I ate, the more the salt paired well with the butter. - For the price, both pastries were generously portioned, especially the scone. They have rotating scone flavors throughout the week. I was also sad to find that at times my two favorite pastries (scones and biscuits) were sold out by the end of the day when I visited. I was exploring Roslindale with my son and we had an amazing dinner and were walking around for dessert when we saw what appeared to an extremely promising bakery. First thing I noticed was that I wasn't greeted by wonderful bakery aromas. I assumed because it was late in the day and they probably weren't actually baking anything. But the shelves were full of lovely looking breads and the cases full of pastries. So much so that it took us a while to decide. The young lady at the counter could not answer a single one of our questions about any of the pastries. She asked the gentleman behind her who also had limited knowledge of the pastries. He did know the breads however. We love sourdough so we bought a lovely looking loaf as well as three pastries. Upon arriving home for our desserts, we both were disappointed. They looked fantastic, and they were reasonably priced, but there was something missing in the nuances of flavor and texture in every part; filling, icing and the base cake. It reminded me of what so-so supermarket pastries used to taste like 20 years ago. Neither of us continued eating our pastries. At least we had the bread. The next morning upon trying to cut it, we found it hard straight through ( I mean as if we had left it for three days on the counter without bag or cover) except a tiny, tiny section in the middle of this large loaf. And the little bit in the center we tried had only a pale hint of a sourdough taste but otherwise bland and claggy. We threw it all away. I remember being impressed at the store that the prices were extremely reasonable for such lovely looking things, but I would have paid more for a better experience. My favorite pastry shop in my neighborhood has a sign that says their breads are from Fornax. I have never bought bread there and now won't. read more

The ingredients are listed in such a way that you would anticipate an artisan sandwich, but really all you're getting is average toppings and a blob of melted cheese over pretty good bread. PRICE: Uncomfortably overpriced. The menu cites an $11.00 full sandwich, but somehow I ended up paying $40.00 for two. I wasn't offered a receipt and I was so aggravated by my experience at that point that I just left the counter, but I have no idea how or for what I was charged. I made one addition to one sandwich and somehow that doubled the price of my entire order. What a joke. SERVICE: Really odd vibes. The staff was not friendly, nor were they attentive or helpful. I stood in line while one cashier looked at me strangely but didn't say anything to me. She then looked past me at another customer I assume she'd been helping before I came in. OK, no problem. A little weird that she decided not to communicate that but I stepped aside so she could assist the other customer. Then, the other staff member walked past me to the person in line after me and took her order. I just stood there waiting patiently. I have no idea why that person did not want to serve me. She just left the counter after taking that order and the first cashier was finally ready to take mine. The was ready soon enough, maybe 10 minutes. So that's a plus? If you're sitting outside, you just have to check in inside periodically. AMBIANCE: Well, needless to say the vibe was off given the horribly dismissive service. Sitting inside wasn't an option for us: we did not want to be in that place. There are a few tables outside where you can share your meal with flies and wasps that will harass you the entire time you're there. Stopped here while visiting friends, not enough seating for our party but I picked up bags of the English muffins and Welsh cakes to bring home. Absolutely delicious! Welsh cakes were like a scone-like biscuit with dried cranberries, fine buttery crumb, sooo good toasted with European butter. The English muffins were an appealing yellow color with a delicious yeasty flavor that was incredible with sausage gravy, sage, and our own sunny egg. I adore this place. They have done some renovations and looks great & quaint. Their staff are so sweet and welcoming. I admire them for working through the recent heatwave to make their customers happy and satisfied with their scrumptious food and drinks. (Fornax staff - you guys are all amazing!) They recently added matcha latte to their menu among several other delicious drinks!! I love their sandwiches as well as my family. We also appreciate their sweet treats for the kids... and the adults too ;) They do have vegan options in addition to gluten free options for those who are wondering and looking! A fairly small store in Roslindale Village that honestly wasn't impressive. I came here on a weekday morning to check out their bread and pastries. I wanted to get a croissant, but they all looked pretty burnt. Instead, I opted for a butter horn danish and 2 1lb white batards. They have a $10 credit card minimum, so keep that in mind. The danish wasn't super flakey, but it was pretty sweet with the sugar and icing on top. One of the batards I got had a burnt end. You can get them presliced or unsliced, I chose unsliced to try to keep the bread fresher. They just stick your items in a brown paper bag. The batard was a semi-hard, chewy loaf that would be great toasted. Maybe it was an off day for them, so I guess I'll have to try out something different if I go back next time. read more

Huge disappointment. Why do people like this place? If it is just the closest or most convenient place to you, I get it, but their food is terrible. I keep trying to give them new chances but they keep failing. Croissants: poor laminations, not crispy or light, and leaked oily butter (is it shortening?) toward the bottom. Overall it is heavy, chewy, greasy and dry Butter cookies with jelly: about the quality of my first from scratch cookies when I was 20. Wedding cookies: Dry, bland Breads (one sourdough, and another one that I think was intended to be a baguette): tight dry crumb and dry tough (not crisp) crusts. they need less salt and a wetter dough, a little more proofing and a little more kneading to develop gluten and to let the yeast really do its work. They also need a better oven with moisture to allow for a crisp but not tough crust. read more

Solid spot for goodies and a quick breakfast or lunch- everything has been tasty so far, and we're looking forward to trying more. Note that their English muffin seems more like a Portuguese roll IMO, and the paninis don't keep much in the brown paper bags (they steam and make the bread kind of soggy, so best to eat immediately), but still good nonetheless. Fair warning that space is tight so it gets pretty chaotic during busy times (like lunch)- and there's a $10 minimum on credit card and no real POS system to speak of, so things can get confusing, like the time someone else grabbed a bag meant for us and the staff was kind of like, oh well? So the experience and organization could be better- I know it's good to be patient and understanding in Covid times, but like, simple non-Covid-related fixes like designating an area for pick-ups, or offering online preordering via Toast, or labels/names on bags so you know what's yours, could go a long way I think. They have bread of course and random other life necessities like bananas nut bread, biscotti and brownies. I was surprised to find out they have lunch offerings too. I've gotten the ham and cheese sandwich and it was super nostalgic deliciousness. Simple classic lunch fare. I had two sides that I wasn't crazy about (soup and coleslaw) but their moneymaker and namesake (the bread) is yummy. The food is good, but the service is increasingly bad. It's consistently slow and sometimes inaccurate in terms of what food is provided and / or the price charged. My husband and I are regulars for weekday lunches. We know to call ahead since the lunch rush is busy. But even when we arrive 10-15 minutes after the estimated time we're given, we still end up waiting a while. Recently we waited for more than 30 minutes even though we showed up later than the estimated pickup time. I get that it's busy, but the reaction from an employee behind the counter made it worse. The first time we asked for an update, he shrugged and pointed to the kitchen. After another 15 mins, we asked if there was any way we could get a status update and the same employee said, "This isn't that kind of restaurant." This employee has also repeatedly under- or overcharged us for orders, which we've always taken in stride and helped clarify what we should pay. When we got home, we discovered that part of our order was missing. We like the food and want to support a local business, but customer service matters, and we'll be looking elsewhere for business. read more

The staff always have pleasant attitudes, friendly, respectful. Now to the goodies: The squash soup is the best thing ever made in this world but it's only seasonal. Great local shop...very cute place. Nice variety of items, however service and overall presentation of food somewhat lacking. Arrived at 503 pm and it was my mistake for not realizing the kitchen closes before bakery. Yelp just said "open" and I was from Virginia. My bad. Why did the cashier let us look a kitchen menu and decide on food before informing us the kitchen had closed 3 minutes ago! Ok. No problem. We selected alternate items. Baked items looked a bit messy. I'm used to imperfect frosting at home and yes it tastes the same. But this is a bakery...and several items looked like my teenage daughter could do a better job with decorating. Just looked homemade not bakery made. No pristine Georgetown swirl that's for sure. Cashier had issues fitting items in boxes. As they didn't have the correct sizes available. For us, it wasn't an issue but another customer wanted an item as a gift and a smushed cupcake would be less than nice. The customer declined the large cupcake and bought small sizes instead. Great!! Why not give her a free one?! No "thank you" or offer of a bag. Just plops items on counter. The last straw for me was the taste. The bread was good, and selection was excellent but the before mentioned cupcake- not super good. Average. If service is like this all the time, I'll pass! I was so happy when Fornax opened. Roslindale just didn't have anything like this a funky coffee bread bakery but in all that time they haven't done anything to keep it fresh. The outside is definitely showing it's age, a little paint would help. The inside hasn't changed either. Just one more thing, a couple of weeks ago two of the employees were smoking outside and came back in and started serving people. Fornax is the cutest and it might be one of my favorite places in Roslindale. No frills though -- this feels much more like your grandma's kitchen than a fancy bakery, so keep that in mind. Everything I have ever gotten here I could have definitely made myself in the same quality, but I am not complaining because I believe the cost to be reasonable for the time and labor required of Fornax's staff to bake these goods so I don't have to lol. This is the only local place in Roslindale where I am able to get an iced latte that didn't taste burnt (I tried the local "coffeeshops" multiple times and resorted to Dunkin before discovering Fornax). So far, I have tried -- Iced vanilla latte (whole milk): Yes. Very yum. Note that for the iced coffees there is only one size option (which is huge imo, it looks to me like 20oz), unlike the hot coffees which have different sizes. I have never been able to finish the iced coffee. Ham and Cheese Croissant: A little greasy and heavy, more like the Pillsbury croissant can in texture than a fluffy authentic croissant. I personally would get it again, but I wouldn't consider it the main attraction compared to everything else available. Breakfast Sandwich (w/ avocado on the "english muffin"): Many of the reviews on here mention that the English muffin is nothing like an English muffin.. I personally am not a fan of English muffins, so bought this off of those reviews which are entirely correct. This bread was very yummy, but nothing like an English muffin. It was sort of like a dinner roll that is heavy instead of fluffy. I was thrilled. As for the other ingredients, it tasted so authentic and homemade that I was instantly transported back to when I was a kid and my mom made homemade breakfast sandwiches when I wanted McDonalds but she wanted me to eat healthier. The only possible downside to this sandwich was that it was very very salty. Again, this worked out well for me as I love salt, but I could imagine it being too salty for a lot of other people. It takes a lot of a lover of salty food to say "hey, that's a lot of salt." Not sure if it was the bread or if they put salt directly into the sandwich. Rosemary Bacci: A good bread but could be heavier on the rosemary in my opinion. I put it in my fridge, which I recognize is blasphemy to the bread lovers, but it lasts a long time and was still good even with a slightly firmer texture from the fridge. Also, a note on aesthetics: This is the cutest freaking shop I have ever seen. The decor is so fun and cozy. I have not tried the sweets yet, but they look straight out of a storybook: not in an artificial and perfect kind of way like some of the fancy desserts in Boston proper, but instead like they were just pulled out of the grandmother's oven in a fairytale cottage. Walking into Fornax is like entering a bakery-sized version of your grandmother's cupboard. There are more than a dozen glass jars full of cookies - peanut butter, lemon sugar, chocolate biscotti, just to name a few - and they're all good, including the many vegan options that are available. There is always a smell of fresh bread in the store, and the loaves - baguette, garlic twist, organic whole wheat, many more - are stacked from nearly floor to ceiling. They're fresh because they sell fast, just as they do on Saturday morning at the local Roslindale farmer's market. I buy my bread here instead of the grocery store because Fornax's bread is much, much better. The best part of Fornax is the staff, who are bubbly and fun to talk with. Every customer is a "sweetheart" or a "honey". You can sit outside in the parklet, but if you're not there at peak hours there will be plenty of seats inside, where you can get your coffee refilled quicker, always with a smile. read more

Visited Fornax for breakfast sandwiches. You get a sandwich and some potatoes for under $6, which is a great deal. The sandwiches are served on English muffins or brioche. The portions were large. There's not a ton of space inside but there's a little parklet outside where we were able to get a seat. Update: now have gotten a loaf of bread. Huge and delicious. read more

Amazing, homemade pastries and bread that are used for sandwiches not just at Fornax but at local restaurants as well. I usually get the tuna salad sandwich with chips and a side salad. For pastries, I'll get their homemade hostess cupcakes, homemade dingongs, cupcake, or cream puffs. Because everything is made from scratch and the cafe is small, service can take a bit - so I highly recommend calling ahead to place your order. Come on, Fornax! You get Boston's Best of award for bread so you're done trying? I ordered a Roasted Veggie sandwich with chicken on a baguette and it left a lot to be desired. Now, I can understand if the place was packed and the sandwich station was slammed with orders, but my girlfriend and myself were the only ones in there. What came out was a toasted baguette with sparse amounts of eggplant and peppers, with the saddest amount of hummus. No caramelized onions or chicken to be found, and I know with it costing $9.15 that I paid for the add-on. The baguette was good, I'll give that to you, so yes maybe your award was valid.
