Besides the Dairy Godmother, the Purple Goose is always on my must visit list whenever I am in the Del Ray area. It's a tiny store but every nook and cranny is filled with children's clothes, books, toys and shoes. Everything is very stylish and well curated (and also a bit expensive too! The outfits here are more for stepping out and not your average Carter's layettes). If you are looking for a unique and fun gift for a baby shower, this is the place to go! If you are looking for deals, they will sometimes open up the consignment shop next door and I've seen some awfully cute dresses that would look great on a holiday card! Sure, there are a few stores in and around DC to get high end kids's fashions. But a consignment boutique for children? Really? Sure! It is in Old Town at Purple Goose. You can find hot clothing items here like Morgan & Milo shoes, Aunt Polly clothing and Robeez. There is certainly a wide variety of stuff here to sort through. I have found great girl's clothes here as well as some of my maternity wear. TIP: Although they bill themselves as a consignment store, Purple Goose also sells new items at top price. Ok, they definitely have cute (expensive) new stuff and you might find some actual deals on the consignment racks. I do love that all the consignment is in absolutely perfect condition. You'd never be able to tell anything was other than brand new. The (bizarre) negatives: -Extremely inattentive staff As in, I was by myself wandering the store and had to walk around shouting for someone to ring me up. Does theft not exist here? Seriously, I don't particularly appreciate overbearing store employees elsewhere, but this place goes to the opposite extreme with no one on the floor at all! There were no other customers in the store, and the front desk phone was ringing and ignored. -Impossible to maneuver the most compact of strollers or car seats. So...a children's shop that is adults-only? Note that Bellies & Babies up the street has play areas for kids (inside & out) and nice, wide open spaces. -No itemized receipts. You only get a credit card receipt with a total amt charged, or nothing with cash. Odd. How the heck do you handle return/exchange or check for clerk accuracy?? -Crazy mark-ups. So I get the "shop local" benefits. I'm into it. However, I assume any shop is buying things wholesale and charging me fair retail. I purchased a cute item here and went online to the manufacturer's website and discovered I'd been had. The item sells for $27 online *retail* (not on sale, and certainly not wholesale), but at the Goose it sells for $39.99!!! That's completely ridiculous! I wouldn't shop here again without phone in hand to check their pricing. It's one thing to spend an extra dollar or two to buy something local and in person, but marking something's RETAIL PRICE up by 50% retail is egregious. What is this place? I don't know because I was trying to be 'small business friendly' and give this place a try, but given no one acknowledged my presence despite the confused look on my face (impossible to hide since this place is so cluttered and seemingly unorganized), I'll never know. I really took my time in the store and not once was I acknowledged - not when I walked, not when I walked out, and certainly no time in-between. This truly amazes me. I was in a shopping state-of-mind and ready to spend and really in a good mood, but this place was a Debbie Downer. It was so cold and floors and ceilings are old and exposed and there is no rhyme or reason (seemingly) to the layout of the store. This is really too bad because the location is great and they have a lot of square footage. It has a lot of potential I presume, esp if you have a 'girly girl' - a lot of fun frilly clothes and accessories, or looking for unique items. read more

Stepping in, definitely looked cramped, but tons of things to look through. So, lots of things to look at in a smaller space, but that was okay for me! So many cute things from clothing, to teething toys, to puzzles, etc. I would say majority was kids consignment clothing. I did not see as much on the furniture and equipment category. My sister took me into the store ... she's a very excited aunt-to-be to my little baby; I can tell already that he will be showered with her love and kisses! I wish this store was nearby to me, because I would frequent this store with the quick turn selection on their super cute clothing! The store has a mix of consignment and new. Last Thursday, I went to the Purple Goose in search of "church clothes" for my Mom's 6 month memorial. I called prior to going to see if they had navy blue blazers and the sweetest salesperson confirmed that they did but that they were probably too small for my son who is 5, but wears a size 6. I asked about sweaters and she found a navy blue Lacoste v-neck that she put on the side for me. She also found a really cute navy blue Lilly Pulitzer dress with green embroidery and silver sparkly ballet flats for my daughter who is 7. I wish I knew the salesperson's name as she was a true gem. She spent a lot of time with me, there was never any pressure to buy, and she also has great taste! Everything was 50% off, too, to boot!!! read more

When it comes to dressing up my daughter, I love DRAMA!!! :) This store has a lot to offer for girls but surprisingly they have a lot of nice, innovative styles for boys too! The store is a bit expensive but it's so perfect for those special occasions when want both quality and style. Also, the owner has been in the community for a while and always host sales at the end of each season. You have to like their FB page though in order to get in on the goody sales. read more

I can't get enough of The Purple Goose!! I absolutely LOVE the clothes and gifts they have for kids. They have an amazing selection of high quality children's clothing and shoes, and so many little extras. I love Del Ray, and I absolutely love stopping in here to look at their new things and find special outfits for my baby. The clothes in the store are all high quality, adorable clothes, so they tend to run a little on the costly side, so I tend to wait for their sales, which are really good, or for something that my daughter needs a special outfit for. We will probably be stopping in soon for her Easter outfit really soon, and I think I already know which one we'll be getting - this adorable pink and white gingham dress/bloomers combination. They also have a decent selection of baby leg warmers, Huggalugs, and really cute, really fun kids socks and tights, which I really appreciate because it's hard to find those items at other stores. Unbelievably RUDE!!! Not sure if it was b/c of my color or because the saleswoman had a bad day but worst I've been treated in a store in the 6 years I've lived here and I live in this neighborhood. She didn't greet me, had difficulty making eye contact with me, couldn't tell me if the consignment clothing was organized by size, offered no help with my gift shopping, and after i made my purchases rudely told me they don't do gift receipts because they "know their merchandise" and that they "don't do gift wrapping". Every comment was delivered with snark and no eye contact. Super cute offerings but I'll stick to Why Not in Old Town. I won't be going back :( read more

When your kid grows an inch a month- you feel just silly spending a fortune on making them look as cute as possible. But, in " Eat your cake and have it too" Land you can find high end clothing cheap. After passing by Purple Goose numerous times, I decided to finally stop in and see what it was all about. Although I can appreciate that the store has every fad baby and child item around, the shopping experience was a little overwhelming. I found it a little hard to see what was available. I think they may have attempted to organize the store at some point but for the most part I felt like it was a little mish-mashed for shopping. It is like one of those over the top Christmas stores but instead of ornaments, it's baby and kid stuff. I liked that they carry local/handmade items though. I think with a little less "stuff" on display, they could really let people see more of what is available. I will probably be back if I ever want to get a specialty child item. read more

I had called prior to driving to the store as I wanted to make sure my trip was not wasted. I asked the store clerk over the phone if there was a good selection of "boy" cloths, and she responded there was. Oh goodness, waste of trip when I arrived. Not only was it a tiny store with little space to walk around, but there was maybe 10 clothing items for boy. I found nothing and my drive down was wasted. The store is mainly for girls. read more

Love this store. Linda, the owner, has a great website and is always adding to Facebook what is new and what is hot. As a mom of twin 2 year old girls, I don't have time to browse. If I did the store owners would want me out as I am sure the girls would have the store on its head in a matter of minutes. With Purple Goose sending out sales, and whats in stock it helps so much. When you go into this adorable store, you are always greeted and asked if there is something they can help with...even when they are with a client. Visited here in the winter to consign some clothing. The owner was very odd to say the least. She insisted on telling the "rules" and why she won't take basically crap. She also insisted on telling me that she has been in business over 20+ years. Just a very odd introduction. In any event, I roamed the store which was very cluttered and disorganized. The Purple Goose is what I call a "Grandma's" shop. It is packed (literally from floor to ceiling and wall to wall) with the most adorable children's clothing, accessories and toys along with high-end consignments. The owner knows her inventory too. I'm constantly amazed that she can tell you off the top of her head what she has, where it is and if she's likely to get more when it's out of stock. The place is in the Del Ray section of Alexandria. You can typically find street parking within a block of, if not right in front of the store and of course there's the rest of the delightful and one-of-a-kind, locally owned businesses all in the 6 or 7 blocks of Del Ray's main street. read more

Some of the clothes are quite cute. However, the owner was so completely rude while I was in the store that it's ridiculous. I had to hunt down someone so that I could check out. When the owner did come to the front, she literally never said a word to me. The entire time I was trying to pay for my purchase she talked to someone else and took care of other things instead of just handing me my change so I could leave. Then she flung the shopping bag at me while she was still talking to someone else. I go shopping quite a bit for my nieces, but will never come back to this store. read more

I'd like to echo the concerns of the other poster. I, too, dropped something off for consignment. It was a baby's baptism outfit with the tags on it. The person behind the counter refused to give me anything as proof I dropped it off for consignment and told me someone would call me that afternoon with the details. Three days have since passed, and I've left three voicemails that haven't been returned. It appears the store took my item and isn't interested in customer service. It's a great way to make money by taking clothes for consignment than never following up with the customer who dropped it off in the first place. I am a Bellies and Babies die hard fan but lately unless they have a large batch of Hanna Andersson..the selection hasn't been mind blowing. I wandered over to Purple Goose and was overwhelmed by how much they have in stock. Yes it is a clusterfuck of items (there is literally stuff jammed into every nook and cranny) but if you're able to find your way to the consignment in the back it's well worth it. On several occasions I have found a Land's End puffer coat for $10, a J crew hooded pea coat for $35, a brand new Ralph Lauren puffy vest for $30, and last week I got 3 pairs of jeans, and 3 designer shirts for $40! Be warned that you CANNOT fit a stroller through the aisles and it's even hard moving around with a car seat. To be honest I'd probably go without the kids because it's so packed in there you're always worried about them touching or knocking something over. I've met the store owner and she was super nice. I've never purchased any of the full priced items but they seem to have a lot of designer clothes at a fair price. read more

This shop makes me happy! The owner is delightful and knows cute kid's clothes. I NEVER leave empty handed and she has saved me many times when I needed last minute specialty items. She buys things you don't see everywhere and I love the selection of accessories! Her inventory for little girls is double what it is for little boys, but that's everywhere. Whatever you do, do NOT bring your children here! It is a hazard! The complete disorganization and lack of young boys' clothing was frustrating, but when I went to the bathroom, what I found there shocked me! Bleach and other cleaners not more 2 feet off the ground & well within a child's reach! Large glass urns on the floor! Multiple cans of hairspray and other products on a low table. Piled high large bags of clothing and other stuff ready to topple over. Then I go out into the store with my eyes more open and notice low hanging glass shelves and other heavy objects that might fall and bludgeon a child. Inspectors need to shut this place down! If you absolutely must go, don't bring your children, it's a death trap! read more

After a horrible experience at another store in Old Town, I ventured to Del Ray looking for blankets for my baby on the way. I went into the Purple Goose and was greeted immediately with smiles. Even though the store had plenty of customers, a gentleman came over to my mother and me. He was friendly and helpful. I left very happy with my purchases and the experience. I'm extremely frustrated with this place. Over a month ago, my husband and I dropped off a piece of expensive baby gear here. About two weeks later, we called to check on its status, but the man who answered said that the woman who handled consignments wasn't in, but that he'd pass along our information, and she'd call us back. Another two weeks go by, and we call again. Same deal, but from another store employee. We finally go in person last weekend, and AGAIN we are told that no one in the shop can give us a status update. The woman at the front desk promised to relay the message to the woman (I'm assuming the owner) who could tell us if our consignment has been sold. And AGAIN, nothing. So, to all of you considering consigning your baby stuff here- don't. Unless you don't mind dealing with this inexcusably unresponsive customer service. I'm seriously considering calling the Better Business Bureau - something I've never done before - to see if an inquiry from them can help us even get our consignment back. read more
