The cream of lemon chicken rice is delicious. I'm a fan. The rice is sometimes a little mushy but I'm not picky when it comes to the rice in that soup as long as it isn't undercooked. Chicken fingers... It's all about the chicken fingers. Delicious!!! I get the regular ones (they have some doused in hot sauce) and the honey mustard dressing. It is about 10.00 for this order but you get a TON if chicken and lots of fries. I'm someone that loves food and I always think I can finish but there's so much there! It's on the Appetizer menu soo it's meant to share but I use it for the main course. Staff is interesting, they are either super friendly, run down and look beat tired or they have snappy attitude. There is a Purple Steer that's a lot closer to me in Hammond, IN but I decided to take a trip to Whiting, IN and bring along my three year old. It's a bit of a drive (25-35 minutes) but I wanted to go somewhere new and since I had a driving companion...why not? The parking is a bit of a joke. I don't see this restaurant EVER being packed because there is hardly anywhere to park. I somehow managed to get a good parking space right by the front doors (totally lucked out). A waitress simply pointed to which booth she wanted us to sit at. As we walked to our seats I was hoping that we were going to the correct one. We sat for about 30 seconds before we were handed waters and a menu (I love that). After another minute a different waitress asked if she could take our order (again, I love that). I ordered a ham & cheese omelette w/hash-browns. They offered three pancakes instead of toast (a perfect size for my 3-year-old) so I went ahead with that, but I also wanted a side order of three strips of bacon. The servings were acceptable (I have had larger servings elsewhere), but that's fine...it did the trick. My child ate half the pancakes (that's expected) and all his chocolate milk. I finished all of mine (as usual) and drank all of my LARGE milk. The waitress was on top of things...awesome job! PERSONAL NOTE - The hand dryer is the Men's Room was very loud and scared the hell out of my kid! Good times! I've read bad reviews on YELP about this place and I have to be honest, they're a little over exaggerated. I'm not a professional "restaurant critic", I really don't know what to look for. I don't know why they call it the Purple Steer as nothing in there seems to be purple. The booths and seats are the typical aqua blue that you find in most diners and the waitresses all wear those royal blue polos that make you think that you are at Jewel or Best Buy. Oh well, I'm pretty sure that the drunks who come in after the 2 am bars close don't really care about the color scheme. It is a decent place to stop by after a hot or not so hot day at the riverboat casinoes, much cheaper than the onsite restaurants and just as tasty. We stopped in last Sunday and I had the Tom Turkey dinner because I had a craving for Thanksgiving (ha) and Gregula had the Whitefish which was OK, but I am not a fan of fish so it wouldn't have been my favorite anyway. We both had the bowl of Minestrone soup which was delicious and there is only one size - a tub sized bowl. Good thing we liked it because there was a LOT. I had the worst dining experience tonight at this restaurant , I've never had such I bad time at a restaurant before. The guy that was at the register was rude, and very insulting,. When I ordered over the phone he wasn't polite, and when I got there to pick up my order 3 min later after placing it, I was just sitting at the bench waiting when he started talking to me in a very disrespectful manner. He has no manners to talk to people. I work for a restaurant in downtown Chicago I would never talk to somebody like that. I would get fired for doing what he did. I HATE this place! I've only been here three times and each time have had an awful experience:\ 1st time I was with a group of about 8 other people(mostly African American) and we were hungry. After sitting down for about 10 minutes or so we noticed a police officer came in and spoke to the manager. The cop sat down and stared directly at us the whole time like he was waiting for something to happen. Everyone felt uncomfortable so we left and went to White Castles instead. 2nd time I went here the night before my birthday with my best friend. She ordered a skillet and told them no onions(I think) and what do you know, they put onions in it. I also ordered breakfast(since that's one meal that's hard to mess up) and my pancakes were burnt. Because we've both been waitresses before we didn't bother to send the stuff back. Then my 3rd time(which was about a week ago) I had a horrible time again. First of all our food comes and there's mushrooms on my boyfriends burger when he specificially asked for no mushrooms. Then as we're sitting there eatting I see my boyfriend looking at something next to our booth(at eye level). I look and see it's a bug. I almost jumped out of the booth, no joke. I asked him if it was roach but he said no. I don't know if he was just saying that because he knows how I'd act or what. We ended up leaving shortly after. If we had not had our food when we saw the bug we would've been outta there immediately! The servers here for the most part are really nice. Unfortunately the food is horrible. The food is out dated. They really need to change things on the menu. I can help them if they hired me. Interesting little diner right next to the casino. People in my office call this place the Purple Heifer, cuz all the food will literally make you balloon up to crazy large size. Standard diner set up run by two almost twin brothers with as much personality as a dead moth. I got: Steak sandwich - it was ok, good steak, but man, it made me poop. Chicken wings - you get like 12 for $9 which is almost a dollar a wing, not very cost effective, but they are big and there is a secret mango sauce not on the menu that was good. Tater skins - covered with the watery weird molten cheese they put on stadium nachos and bacon bits. Very fat inducing. My server was very nice and sweet and bumps the whole experience up to a 3 star for me. But twin owner dudes, work on the attitudes on the way out the door. And speed it up son. Ok ok... I live in Northern, IL and from time to time, I will make the hour and a half drive to eat me some hot fingers! This place literally has the best chicken hot fingers in the country. The meat is cooked to perfection. Not dry, very juicy. Right amount of sauce. What you bite into these chicken fingers, your taste buds literally take you to food heaven and back. Their wings are fire too! Complement them with their BBQ sauce and you will not find anything else like this anywhere in America. The chicken is so tender that it almost feels like it's coming straight from the butcher block to the restaurant and into your mouth! At a little under $15 you cannot go wrong with a meal like this. One of those 3am eatery joints that you always end up at after a night of fun. They have okay food, and not so great service. You can't split the checks, and have only one check per table so be aware of you go in one large group that doesn't all have cash. They have also changed their prices as of this past year and everything is definitely more expensive now, so beware. Food is great. Love that it is open 24 hours and that its a great restaurant to end your fun night out. Hot chicken fingers seem to be everyone's favorite dish. Every time I come we end up ordering like 3 or 4 plates of hot chicken fingers. Personally, the regular chicken fingers are good and I prefer them. The only thing I disliked was the fact that they don't split the check. It's the policy and it is a huge hastle trying to come up with cash among a group of friends to pay.
