This one is pretty sleepy and quiet, and I usually just use it for its proximity to other things. It's on the district line, and has a cemetary overlooking the station, which is interesting, atmospheric, and almost a little sad to me.

It is a major…read morehub, especially if traveling from Heathrow/west/south/north/basically anywhere around London to everywhere else. For how many people pass through daily, I found it clean - especially compared to a public transport stop in Chicago or NYC. As an American, from Wisconsin, I am essentially ignorant as to how public transportation works. But with a little patience and a lot of assistance from Google Maps and politely asking staff or other travelers, it really isn't as crazy as it seems. I feel like there is decent signage, the key is to research ahead of time what platform you are arriving on and where you need to go next. Also, avoiding the work/school rush hours makes it much less intimidating ;)

It's on the Wimbledon branch of the District Line, served by trains to/from both the City (via Victoria) to Upminster and to Edgware Road via Paddington. The station is used by just over 5 million passengers a year. The station opened in 1880 as part of the extension of the (then) Metropolitan District Railway from West Brompton to Putney. Like most of the original stations on the route, the road level buildings are in a simple Italianate style in creamy-yellow stock brick, although the façade has always been limited to the main doorway. The platform level buildings - actually situated on the long viaduct which runs all the way to Putney Bridge - retain their original decorative wooden awnings which, as deannederago points out, provide good shelter from the elements. The station has sidings at both ends, and is sometimes used for trains terminating short of Putney Bridge or Wimbledon. As well as the main entrance on Parson's Green Road, there is a useful rear entrance to a footpath (Beaconsfield Walk) which provides a short cut to the roads running south off Fulham Road, around Whittingstall Road.

Action Town is a major interchange on the District and Piccadilly lines in West London, and is used…read moreby over 5.5 million passengers a year. Opened in 1879 as Mill Hill Park on the extension of the Metropolitan District Railway from Turnham Green to Ealing Broadway, services were gradually augmented with the opening of the line to Hounslow Town in 1883, to Hounslow Barracks (now Hounslow West) in 1884 and South Acton in 1905. The station was rebuilt in 1910 and renamed 'Acton Town'. It was rebuilt again in 1931, in preparation for the Piccadilly line taking over services (from the District Line) to Uxbridge, and with the extension of Piccadilly line services to Hounslow West (now on the Heathrow branch) in 1933. This is one of Frank Holden's famous modernist style stations, with a tall, square ticket hall featuring extensive glazing, above a single storey podium containing shops and other facilities. The platforms also retain the concrete canopies from this period. Alas, these are looking a little tatty now, and the whole station could benefit from a lick of paint. The line to South Acton closed in 1959, and since 1964 the Hounslow West branch has been operated by Piccadilly line trains only (but was extended to Heathrow in 1977). It retains an important function as an interchange, as Piccadilly line trains do not stop at most of the intermediate stations between here and Hammersmith, and it is the junction for the lines north to Ealing Broadway (District) and Rayners Lane/Uxbridge (Piccadilly) and west to Heathrow (Piccadilly). The station is served by the E3 bus, and by buses 70, 207, 427, 440 and night buses N7, N11 and N207 in nearby Harrow Road

I've probably been watching way too many Youtube channels about the London Underground because I'm…read morenow referring to them as sub-surface and deep level lines, and this one I believe is a subsurface line. This means that it is one of the older lines, basically because they didn't have the modern boring machines that they do now (and even then it takes absolute yonks to build a line, but I guess back then they didn't care if they were barging though some ancient historical site, whereas now they have to do a lot of archeology before anything - who knows, they might find a dinosaur). Anyway, yeah, this station isn't bad, and I believe it's on the edge of the main city. Well, that isn't surprising considering that it is named after one of its gates.

I prefer the young gate to the Aldgate…read more It was horrific when several people died here in the July 7 bombings, and Aldgate will forever be synonymous with that horrific attack. These days it's just a very busy spot on the line close to Liverpool Street, and a station I use more than most others, as I come around here for food and drink a lot when I visit London. Close to the best parts of East London, well kept, often busy, and in a very useful location.

Sure, there is an argument that there are a couple of stations nearby by this is on the edge of the old city, so the streets twist and turn everywhere, and half the exits are closed, so getting to the tube can actually be quite tricky at time. Still, it's a station, so you can get to places out of the city reasonably easy. Yeah, I guess privatised railways do create a mess like this.

Fenchurch Street railway station is the City of London's oldest main line station, the smallest,…read moreand also one of the nicest. It is also one of the four stations on the original Monopoly Board. Perhaps these things are not unrelated? The first station in the area was the London & Blackwall railway's terminus in nearby Minories, opened in 1840. These trains ran down to the Thames at Blackwall, and were designed to take traffic from the ferries, which they successfully achieved. In 1841 it was extended close to the city, on the present site. It was rebuilt in 1853-4 to the designs of George Berkeley, in grey stock brick, in a simple classical design with doric pilasters separating round-arched windows, all surmounted by a crescent-shaped pediment, in which is located the station clock. The station also became the terminus of the London, Tilbury & Southend Railway (LT&SR) n 1858, and it is these services - to Tilbury and Southend - which survive to-day. The frontage happily survives almost untouched, and in excellent condition, although the original flat canopy above the entrance has been replaced by a nevertheless attractive zig-zag canopy. It faces a small square, and is delightful in summer sunshine. The same cannot be said of the accommodation behind, where the graceful arched glass train-shed has been replaced by a rather low and dingy ceiling underneath a large office development, although the long platforms do at least have some daylight further out. Its small size means it is also easy to navigate, and there are no long walks to anywhere. The main ticketing facilities and concourse behind are at first floor level: there are escaltors, stairs and a lifts. Toilets (free) are on the ground floor, with all other facilities at first floor level. There are a number of food and drink outlets, a Transport for London help desk, several cashpoints and a small newsagent (W H Smiths) on the concourse. There is also a small ticket office at the Cooper's Row entrance. The station has just two island platforms giving four platform faces, which are used to capacity at peak hours, providing some 20 trains an hour. The services used to be a by-word for awfulness: the LT&SR acronym was reinterpreted as the 'Late, tired and suffering railway' by its passengers. However, the trains are now exclusively operated by the c2c company (c2c = City to coast), with shiny new trains which are among the most punctual in the UK. Fenchurch Street It is unique in London termini in not having an underground connection. The best connection is from the rear exit (Cooper's Row) to Tower Hill station, a two-minute walk away. There is a small taxi rank by the main entrance, but no cycle storage, nor any left luggage facilities.

Stanmore is the northern terminus of the Jubilee Line on the London Underground. It is in Fare Zone…read more5, with 12 trains per hour to Stratford off-peak (via central London), this increases to 18 trains per hour on-peak. The station has buses outside too, making it also useful to get into Watford, which is around a 35-minute bus journey from here. The station was fairly clean, it has step-free access from the street to the platform, although I would advise who can go up the stairs to do so, as the only fully stepless route involves going through a poorly lit car park which can be pretty dangerous even in the day-time. The ticket gates were open for the whole day, this seemed strange as it could mean people potentially passing through the station and easily evading purchasing a ticket, especially considering I could not find any staff members in the station to patrol this. My friend, who is not from London got charged her usual fair and a maximum fare after touching out twice. Come on TFL, there were two minutes between both taps, how could she travel the whole network in two minutes? A useful station for Stanmore and surrounding towns, they have toilets and buses outside the station that allow you to continue your journey and being a terminus station, there is a train in most of the time, so you can get settled without having to wait on a cold platform. 3*
