We are so excited the new Putney General Store is reopening on Saturday May 6th. The "soft" opening appears to be going extremely well. Well-stocked and well-staffed with delicious looking deli food and sandwiches. Typical grocery items to grab when you've run out and a good selection of beer and wine. Sad there is no pharmacy and they have yet to figure out what will go on the second floor (they're open to ideas). read more

We arrived at the busy store around 4:00 PM. The staff working at the deli took two phone orders while we were waiting to order (I think in person customers should have priority). After a rocky start and kind of a long wait, we finally received our sandwiches and I have to say - worth the wait! The turkey, apple, brie was wonderfully flavorful and perfectly prepared. The BLT was a delicious BLT but not as good as the turkey. I would definitely go there again if I'm in the area but maybe I would call in my order. read more

This was such a great little place! We stopped for lunch while headed back to Massachusetts from further north. The ladies behind the counter were all very friendly and helpful when we ordered. They were fairly busy, so we knew we'd have to wait a few minutes; which gave us time to explore the store itself a bit. They have lots of grocery items and other household essentials, as well as a good selection of adult beverages. They have a small souvenir section and looks like a bigger gift shop upstairs (but it was closed the day we were there). I ordered a reuben (on sourdough instead of rye); my husband the tuna melt, and our 7 year old got a burger (plain with just ketchup, as he likes it). Our order was ready pretty quickly and again the staff were kind and made us feel welcome. It looks like they may have had some indoor seating at some point (maybe nixed due to Covid?) and I would very much like to see that come back--currently there's no place to sit inside. It was a cool October day, but not too bad, so we opted to sit outside on their adorable porch--which we ended up really enjoying! Our food was perfectly made and absolutely delicious! My reuben was a little messy because it was jam-packed with all of its delicious ingredients. My husband was a little surprised by the peppers in the tuna melt (it didn't mention them on the menu), but he loved it. My 7-year-old son kept exclaiming over how good the burger was. I didn't taste it but it was on a gorgeous-looking brioche bun--I'm sure it was great. This was a really nice little shop with great service and fantastic food. Loved it! read more

OK, so the Putney General Store does not have cappuccinos, BUT is does have some of the best pastries I've encountered in Vermont. The flakiness of their chocolate croissant was wonderful. Also, their drip coffee is VT Artisan Coffee, so it's about the best of drip. It was roasted to perfection. Besides being a much needed breakfast dessert stop, the store is cute and the service very friendly. They make sandwiches and other stuff, all of which looked really good. With it's big front window and seating right there, it seems like the best place to sit and have a few pastries and a coffee while watching Putney (well the traffic intersection at least). read more

The store is not well organized and kind of overwhelming. The Chinese food is expensive for the amount you get. Ordered the general Taos chicken pork fried rice and crab rangoons not very flavorful chicken and a small portion for a high price. Crab rangoons taste like they only have cream cheese in them. The rice was good but that's about it. Will not be ordering from here again the china buffet has no MSG is a third the price and much tastier read more

The new owners decided to not have a coffee corner and that was the only reason me and my partner went. It's a lovely walk from our house and we used to enjoy going for an iced coffee (with coffee iced cubes) two to three times a week. I have yet to visit since. read more

The new Putney General Store has an amazing variety of great food made to order at their delicious deli and also offers everything that you would need such as groceries and a great grab and go section. The store is a one stop shop for anything you could need while passing through or a convenient place to go if you live close by. I stop here whenever I'm in the area (1-2 times a year) & haven't had a bad sandwich yet. It's a great little general store / sandwich shop, nice & clean. The staff are always very friendly. During a 4 day conference in Vermont, I stopped off EVERY morning not bc there were no other options, but by choice. I was "sold" on my first visit - EXCELLENT customer service, delicious maple lattes (ooohhh la la!), and PHENOMENAL fresh made, in house baked goods. I loved the vibe - everyone was friendly; there were community members, local workers, other conference goers, elderly, business types, moms w strollers. My fella brought me here promising AMAZING sandwiches. I was underwhelmed. Kinda lazy deli type sandwiches with very little about them that felt special. They were expensive, too! If you are ordering a sandwich, prepare for a wait. As much as 1 1/2 hours. Apparently, even though high volume is something they are accustomed to, there is no way to make things go more quickly. They are also completely unapologetic about it. By the way, on the day we were there, they were out of most things. Ridiculous. I also get the impression that we were "home towned." As things turn out, there were four tickets behind us. When we were finally served (and mind you, we ordered sandwiches like everybody else), EVERYBODY had been served before us. If you are from out of town stopping in, no matter how nice you are, don't. read more

As a student at the nearby college, I'm here often. The made-to-order side of the Chinese food section is simply *incredible* and consistently amazing, while the premade can vary in quality and taste. There's a lot of stuff in the store, once you factor what's upstairs. Very good community asset, oh, and they have a deli counter as well. read more

Dropped in with my boyfriend for mocha coffees and strawberry scones while on our way to ski in Northern Vermont. So adorable and friendly, this is the best pit stop ever for a romantic gateway! I want to eat that strawberry scone every day for the rest of my life! So, so delicious. read more

I usually go here for milk, and beer, and chocolate, in no particular order. They have a wide selection of beer in multipacks. My kids like their prepared foods, which I keep meaning to try. Pleasant, fast, what's not to like? read more

As the last reveiwer said, "just re-opened". Don't think they were ready. Shelves half empty, Deli sparse, coffee bar that had full menu is replaced with sub par serve-yourself containers, staff learning to do simple things on customer's time. Will try them again in awhile... read more

We stopped in to get a quick bite to eat at around 6pm. We were totally surprised at the variety and quality of the food. Delicious Rueben sandwiches, huge burritos, interesting salads, grilled salmon, steak tips, homemade soups... and lots more. All in a beautiful warm Vermont general-store. There are two Vermonts: Authentic, down home and hospitable. And cynically precious run by folks who genuinely resent their customers, at least the tourists. This place is clearly the latter. We stopped in for a sandwich and got mostly lettuce prepared by someone whose downright hostility was palpable, all for the insulting price of $8. Stay away. read more

Re-opened and gorgeous!! The 2009 fire interrupted the longest continually running general store in the state, but they are back in business with a wide selection of staples, Vermont goodies, an impressive wine selection, craft materials & other toys for kids, lovely cafe seating upstairs. A great find! We stopped at Basketville (lots of Baskets!) and asked the cashier for a place to eat nearby. She recommended the General Store for good sandwich; we were not disappointed! There is an area inside the store to sit and and enjoy your lunch. My husband and I shared an Italian sub sandwich that was very large, and the price was about $10. The staff was very kind and helpful, letting us know we could browse through the general store to select other things, like drinks and chips and then pay for it all at the end of our visit. Putney General Store is run under new management as of 2013. This nostalgic, post and beam framed store is clean, organized and the food is great. The atmosphere is inviting and and the staff is cordial and outgoing. They offer a wide variety of organic and gluten free food to take out food or eat inside or out on the inviting country porch. The coffee is always fresh and hot. The grocery section includes a good selection of fresh vegetables and dairy products. The second floor features pharmacy, large wine selection and gifts, art and metal art. Absolutely delightful place to shop. read more
