I phoned in a take out order. Two meat combo, tri-tip and chicken, with chili beans and potato salad. It was very good. Loved the barbecue sauce. Potato salad was perfect. Chili beans were great. The amount of food was enough for me to have two meals. When I went to enjoy the leftovers the next day, I was bummed because I forgot I had used all the barbecue sauce and I didn't have any at home. My father used to say that being married is like having a pillow fight in prison or when someone pulls out a guitar around the campfire - it seems like fun but there's soon a foreboding intuition telling you nothing good can come of this and you quickly feel trapped to the extent that it becomes so awkward you don't know where to look. Not surprisingly, my father was married several times. He didn't respect the institution of marriage. He also eschewed conventional names for his later born children and started naming them after his favorite things in life. The only half sibling that I'm actually close to is my stepbrother, Pappy Van Winkle, who is about my age and lives the next town near his own Mom and two sisters. Pappy is getting married next month, so I thought I would provide him with some positive advice about the institution of marriage and take him out to a nice lunch. We ended up at Q-Time BBQ in Oak View. What a revelation! The small unassuming grocery store along Ventura Avenue contains a mind blowing selection of wine and a wonderful butchery serving some of the best barbecue in the area. I had the tri-tip plate with macaroni salad and baked beans, and Pappy ordered the bone-in barbecue chicken with potato salad and slaw. All fantastic and the customer service could not have been better. We couldn't find anywhere to sit inside, so we ate in my car while I extolled the benefits of marriage to Pappy. I explained that a wife becomes more than just a best friend. Because best friends will desert you the first time that you try to urinate out of the front window of their moving car even though we all agreed that 55 miles an hour was slow enough to make it work. Of course that's merely a hypothetical scenario, but if it did happen it's entirely Nathan's fault because he refused to pull over when we were an hour late for his grandmother's funeral. And you certainly cannot expect someone to hold their bladder after drinking an entire Big Gulp and two Mike's Hard Lemonades that he insisted we drink to toast his Grammy's journey to the great beyond. It's a biological impossibility! My point is this: a wife is more than a cherished friend as she would never cut you out of her life for ruining her good suit or the upholstery in her car, and she would certainly be willing to overlook your harmless errors in judgment and less than sound understanding of fluid dynamics. I believe it was Colerage who said "the happiness of marriage is that it is the highest state of love. It is the great mutuality, the sharing of self." Two become one, no matter what challenges come along. And challenges are guaranteed. Pappy was elated that we could spend time together over a delicious meal at Q-Time BBQ, and he seemed a little confused but mostly convinced that my advice was sound and sincere. Great BBQ place hidden inside a grocery store. We found this place by cruising Yelp - great for locating those tucked away restaurants, and this place was definitely not somewhere we would have found on our own. When you walk in the grocery market, bang a left and you'll see a meat counter with a few tables and chairs near it. That's it! The woman who took our order was extremely patient and very accommodating to our request to substitute things in the dinner meal. We got the 3 meat dinner meal (beef tri-tips, pulled pork and chicken) with fries and potatoe salad plus a chicken sandwhich and half pound of chili beans. I think the total came out to about $25 and while that may sound expensive it is pretty cheap for BBQ (especially compared to our local places). And unlike those places, we were full when we got done eating. The beef tips were the best part of the meal in my opinion. The chicken was good (a little smokey) and the pulled pork was OK (I've had better but I've definitely had worse!). We took the meal to Lake Casitas and had a picnic. The fries were the worse for the trip but I don't hold that on the restaurant at all. The potatoe salad was great (not your typical loaded with mayo version) and the 'chili beans' was actual chili and not some canned crap. They used Ciabata bread for the pulled pork sandwhich and my wife liked it (she is hard to impress). My 3 year old loved everything which is also saying something. These were the best bbq ribs we have had in years. Without any sauce you taste the wood fire grill and they are cooked to perfection! I thought hmmm bbq sounds good, and I remembered this place. $15 for a dinner combo with Tri-tip, not bad at all! The Tri-tip was delicious and nicely cooked (medium rare just how I like it). They are generous with their sides which I love! There's places I have gone to that give you tiny scoops that don't even fill a small cup and charge the same price or more and the food isn't even that good.
