First time in Lawrence.. Have dined at all the others. Waiter server was excellent. 6pm place filled up fast. The lack of any thought of acoustics in the giant open space was awful. All of the metal chairs are also awful. Next time I will sit on a cushioned bench seat if possible. Note I said next time that is a good thing for the restaurant! My fries were not the freshest /hottest but I am picky. I had the shrimp/bacon wrapped appetizer for my main course. They were fine but again not the hottest or freshest...again I am picky. Had the bread pudding for dessert very good and extra hot and fresh...but boarder line burnt. More fun ahead and impressed with all the investment in a Lawrence downtown restaurant. This was my first time here. Sera was our server and she took the time to explain everything on the menu. She asked me what I liked and helped me pick out what was the best option on the menu. The service was amazing. My husband and I tried the brisket, pulled pork, chicken, pork belly, macaroni, potato salad and baked beans. We really liked it all. It's been a while since I had eaten at Q39. When I heard they'd opened a new one here in Lawrence I was excited because there wasn't really any good options for bbq in town that was more of a fun, sit down restaurant, open later. It's basic bbq. Burnt ends should melt in your mouth, not require a good amount of chewing and be reminiscent of a pot roast. The brisket was good. But considering the premium prices they are charging for what is 6 chewy pieces of burnt ends and 3 strips of brisket with a cup of cheesy corn and a small serving of fried....I'd just as soon as drive to Lenexa and go to Jack Stack. Biemers BBQ on 9th and Iowa is much better bbq and you actually get better value for what you spend. Also they crammed as many tables and chairs as they could into the space to the point where the couple dining next to us might as well have been sitting with us... maybe 12" between. So between the surrounding tables conversations bleeding into our own and the obnoxiously loud music and slow service, I give them a few months of hype because they are new and different but ultimately falling short of the grandeur they insist they bring to the table. I don't write many reviews, but our experience today merited one. The entire waitstaff seemed to be instructed to give a big sales pitch. Our waiter was over the top in this regard, and inattentive to boot. He seemed put out that I didn't like burnt ends, as that was obviously something they had been trained to push. It's a restaurant, not a used car dealership. Nowhere on the menu could I just order something a la carte - I asked if I could just get one serving of brisket and maybe one side rather than the pick two plate and was told it wasn't even an off-menu option - I'd have to order two servings of brisket and the full plate - I ordered a sandwich instead. Leaving there was not enough space between tables to get out of the booth, and even getting out of the restaurant was an ordeal - I had to turn sideways to get down any supposed "aisle" to the door. Food was okay, but not any better than Biggs or Biemers, and certainly more expensive. Definitely would not recommend. read more

I had a really great experience at Q39 in Lawrence. The service was fantastic from the moment we walked in, and the food definitely lived up to the reputation. My girlfriend and I both ordered the pulled pork sandwich, with coleslaw on the side, plus fries and beans. Everything was excellent. The pork was tender and flavorful, the sides were solid, and the portions were just right. The only downside was the drink prices. Any domestic beer was $7 (12oz Coors light) and cocktails were north of $13, which felt pretty absurd considering it ended up costing more than the food itself. For a casual barbecue spot, that pricing seemed a little excessive. Overall though, the food and service were great and I'd definitely come back, I'd just probably stick with water next time. read more

Went opening night . Food was good but not Gates or Bryant's authentic. NO BREAD of any kind! Who serves BBQ with no "bread for the dining room" as they say at Gates. Service was excellent though and the overall experience not bad. Please get some bread to go with the meal! read more

I had lunch there with a girl friend last week, who has told me many great things about Q39. I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere, the cornbread, and the salmon salad. My friend was dissatisfied with her shrimp (she did not think it was cooked completely), but the server was very kind, attentive, and had a new plate out, quickly. A female manager (I am assuming, as I did not get a formal introduction) stopped by to see how we were enjoying everything, and my friend let her know about her shrimp. The lady said that they would not serve raw food and that everything is fresh from the smoker. My friend said she just wanted to let someone know, in order to prevent someone else experiencing the same, and the lady asked her if she had ever had smoked shrimp before, explaining that that might be why the texture was unfamiliar to her [my friend]. My friend said she thought the dish was grilled, as she has enjoyed it there before, and the lady told her that she, "might just need to order something different." As I said, my food was great and the restaurant was nice, but the experience with that lady rubbed me the wrong way. I would expect that if you are a manager that you care a bit more about your customers and their satisfaction. read more

I had heard so much about this restaurant and was really excited for my first visit. I ordered the brisket and burnt ends. What I got was 4 small pieces of burnt ends and almost 3 thinly sliced pieces of dry brisket. The only reason they got 2 stars was for the exceptional service I received from their staff. If that is what they think constitutes $24 worth of food, then good luck to them. read more

Took my husband to Q39 for his birthday and we both left disappointed. Upon arrival we waited five minutes to be greet by the hostess and only then after a manager stood there talking with the hostess who also did not acknowledge us standing there. Other member of the staff walked by, stopped at chat but not one acknowledged us standing there. Not much of a team atmosphere more of a not my job I don't see those people! Upon being taken to a table we were initially seated at a small two person table even though only four other table were full. We asked for bigger table and were reseated but told if there were busy that wouldn't be possible! I found this very rude, if it has been busy we would not have asked. Our served was nice and polite but continuing to ask if this was our first time by all staff was annoying and pretentious. Onion straws were overrated. Our meals were good but I would not consider it award winning. The most interaction of the hostesses was as we left, sad it didn't start that way. Tuesday night. Not busy at all. Charlie started off well but after that we saw him once. Long narrative about fresh cut bbq hot off the smoker etc. Ordered the brisket burnt ends platter thingy hoping it would be big enough to share and after 15-20 minutes finally got it. Not by Charlie though. Asked for salt and pepper but the server had already walked away. Not hot, dry brisket and maybe 5-7 chunks of burnt ends. Warm potato salad and cold beans. Two tiny sides. Maybe a half pound total of beef for almost $30. Put card out to pay and Charlie walks by us three times until I finally had to get his attention. Don't waste your time and money here. Fancy name and location doesn't mean good bbq. read more

Had the taco's and they good 4 out of 5 but then we were offered free cookie for a better review and it's hard to say no a free cookie but I'd suggest you stick to BBQ because the cookie left a bad taste in our mouth. read more

We were able to get a reservation which was very nice as most places don't offer them. The waitress was very nice and attentive. Only real issue is that potato salad was below what I think their standards ought to be. (Small cubes of potato with little flavor, which cost $6.) I ordered a platter because it had burnt ends on it but only got 5 very modest pieces that had a bit too much fat. For the price, I guess I expected more. Hopefully this new location with figure it out as it is much more convenient for us to go the Lawrence location rather than their others sits. read more

Well, I've been to a lot of bbq joints. LCs, Smokehouse, Jacks, Joes, etc. Yes, it's very good. Had the big "selection" plate, chose brisket, ribs, sides street corn and beans...as each choice had been highly suggested and seemed "core" to the place. They don't serve separate plates of burnt ends only. It's all "chef led", ande old schol distinctive, that's for sure. Great stuff each, but (here's the but) if like me, you are old school, slow, and Smoke, it's not quite your taste. Brisket the tenderest I have ever ever seen. You could cut it just by staring at it. The best thing there perhaps, but not smoked enough. 2 ribs (why not 3?) again super with cream and a little citrus taste + sugar, with spices, but again not enough smoke, bark. Street corn memorable, with little cream, citrus, and maybe sugar but not Mexican authentic enough for me, being a Mexico frequenter. Beans were smart, with brisket pieces yay! But again too white sugary-sweet, not really smoked. Pretty high prices for not being in the Big City. Trendy in that the younger crowd seems to crave sugar in everything, but the venerable Gen Z and us Boomers prefer way less Sugar and more Slow Smoke. For me, an A--, or B,++. Way better than Dickies. But not A++ like Joes, or Smokehouse, or Bryant's, or esp. LCs. read more
