Gio pronounced "yaw" meaning the wind/breeze. I'm feeling this place! What a change from the previous Huyen's restaurant! I mean total face lift. I love the lighting, I love the music (well most of it) and I love the service! Food was good. The front of the restaurant is darkened off with a nice bouncer sitting in front chillaxin'. Cool guy. -Canh Ga Nuoc Mam (Fish Sauce Chicken Wings) - I LOVE this dish in general. Can't go wrong, crispy fat wings. I think the fish sauce could have been more stronger. Usually the wings I eat are fish sauce city, but this was a slight hint. Not too overdone and slightly crisp on the outside. Yum. -Bo Luc Lac was a little too cooked for me (I like mine a little pink). The meat to veggie ratio was definitely in favor of the carnivores but did end up wilting all the watercress -Goi Xoai Kho Muc (Dried Squid with Mango Salad) - Julienned mango with strips of the dried squid. It was a little too much fish sauce topped off. It was nice and spicy. The dishes will run you around $10-$14. The hot pots were $22 which is pretty good for the price. Beers are $2.50 a bottle and flavored soju $20. Beer and wine menu only of course. Service is excellent. They have a lot of waitresses here. Most are pretty hot in their daisy dukes and tight snug logo wifebeaters. They're all really friendly girls (warning: some of them aren't too skilled in English but can still get the job done.) These chics work harder than most other girls working at competing restaurants. Yeah, they'll push beers, but they're also cheery, and if you become a regular, will drink with you and will open your chopsticks for you and rub off any excess bamboo pieces. They'll dance with each other in between songs and tease each other. (What dudes don't like seeing that). They have corner area with a singer and keyboard/tech guy. You are welcome to come up and sing as well. Most people sing Vietnamese songs but I'm pretty sure they can find any song under the stars. Sound system is pretty LOUD! If you're looking for a classic Vietnamese bar to go to that'll remind you of the ones in the Bay Area, this is the closest one you'll get to it. For the time that I was there, I enjoyed myself. It reminded me of home. I actually liked it better than the Vietnamese bars back in the Bay Area somewhat. The environment of the place was very close-knit and more friendly than most places. The ambiance was nice with all the colorful rainbow and strobe lights. The waitresses are always walking around and taking care of you regardless of whether you're an old asian dude. The beer is cheap ~$2.50/beer I believe. The fries weren't too bad either, but I'm not sure how much those were. The time that I was there, which was a Thursday night, the girls weren't half naked or anything and they didn't have dancers like they would at the Vietnamese bars in San Jose, but it was still pretty great. But who knows, maybe they do on Friday - Sunday, but I kind of doubt it. They've got a lady MC trying to host the karaoke, which I like that it's pretty organized. Of course, the vietnamese music gets pretty annoying after a while especially if you can't understand, but you can sing any song karaoke style through YouTube anyhow. Took my friends here on a whim because we wanted to eat some snails. We ordered Bo Luc Lac, a few snail dishes, grilled clams, and some beers. The food was pretty good and the snails were fresh. Service was slow and dissapointing. To be honest, I don't think these girls speak English. I didn't mind the loud music (it gets louder after 7pm) but I knew I had to get out of there when people started karaoke. The singing was horrible and I think they should just played the CD instead. This place is sooooooo good. Every time I head to SoCal I end up over indulging because we just don't get the same quality Vietnamese food in Portland. It's cheap and makes my belly happy! We came here pretty late, I'm guessing like midnight or something and the kitchen was closing down. Thank goodness we made it in time. We had tom tai chanh (shrimp ceviche), bo luc lac (shaken beef), some baby clam thing, and dried squid. All great dishes. The calms could have been flavored a bit more though. Went here with some friends who really recommended this place, very trendy looking place with cool neon lights around the walls. I'm not exactly sure what was ordered as my friend chose her favorites, maybe you can tell by the photos. There were a plate chicken wings that were really good, some roasted tiny bird (maybe a sparrow?) which was very tasty but lacked meat, Mussels, Goat curry (tasty but very chewy) and also something in a conche shell. Then we had this big pan cooking infront of us which had a broth and various seafood around it like shrimp, mussels, codfish served with rice noodles. I'm a true foodie so all this interesting stuff was cool but I think alot of it is an acquired taste. Service is also very attentative. Now the reason it doesnt get 5 stars despite the food being very good: 1. They open more bottles of beer for you before you finish your last, I understand why but its not good if the person only wanted 1 to begin with. 2. The waitresses clean up around you whilst you are eating, maybe I'm just not used to it but its kinda odd eating whilst they reach over and compile almost empty plates. 3. Overall: This may look like one of those shady looking Asian night bars with the security standing outside during the late hours, but don't let the exterior fool you. I wouldn't recommend coming here unless you know someone or know Vietnamese because it can be intimidating when you first walk in and everyone is staring at you. I have brought a couple of my Caucasian friends so the place doesn't discriminate, but I don't think this is a place that they would go by themselves. I love how you can relax with sometimes good hiphop/techno music (other nights, they may have people come up and sing Vietnamese karaoke), but this is a nice lounge to hang out with some friends and eat some rare and odd food items. Food: Food can be a bit pricey ranging in the $15 dollar range, but that is how bar food usually are. I LOVE the food here compared to most Vietnamese lounges I go to... + Duck fetus egg (Balut/Hot vit lon) - best I had at most places and usually fresh, which means they aren't really old or have aged dramatically + Coconut snails (Oc len xao dua) - love this! + Larger size snails with fish sauce dip - love this! + Clams - delicious! + Hot Pot - delicious, but expensive! I usually get the Lau Thai (Hot Pot Thai Flavor) + Cube steak (Bo luc lac), and even more! Drinks: Cheap beer, which are $2-4 I believe and you can order a bucket, which comes with 10 beer of your choice i.e Corona, Heineken etc... Usually if you don't finish the beer and as long as you don't open it, they can calculate the total of what you drank and only charge you for that, but I'm not sure about this place. Service: The service here is ok. You never really get spectacular service from Vietnamese places, but they do come to your table when you first arrive to take your order. After they bring out your food, they usually come around every so often to ask if you want anything else (usually beer). Environment: As you enter, you noticed the girls are usually dressed provocatively (short skirt, revealing top etc) sometimes. Once they lead you to an open table, they usually hand you a menu, take your order and comes around once in a while to get you a new beer/drink. Some of the waitresses English aren't the best, so that's why it may be harder if people who didn't speak Vietnamese came, but then again you can always point! This place never disappoints whenever you crave for some nhau foods! Everything is so good and surprisingly the service weren't bad. (I'm always weary about service in Nhau lounges because they're typically rude to females but when I didn't know some of the stuffs on the menu, the girls there were pretty helpful!). Loved the foods here, minus the cigarettes odor lingering everywhere. Wish they had a separate areas for that. Otherwise, the dishes are so good! Always a good time here. The fried chicken feets and all the oc dishes are my fav. FYI: Now that I read everyone's posts, I do think they overcharged us with the beer but I didn't pay attn at them moment what they had brought out to argue back. But they said we drank 12 bottles between 2 people. I honestly only remembered seeing each of them only drinking 3 each max. My friend Danny just had to bring me here... Being a chick that has never stepped foot into a quan nhau before, I was in for a surprise. I was glad I went with him since he knew like half of the people there and the owners, we got our drink on rather quickly. I guess like most Asian bars, they had drinking and smoking. But come here excepting that instead of complaining. There were lots of food. There was also loud karaoke on the day we went and it was jammed pack. We had oysters, sushi and other bar foods. Food was surprisingly good. They also had hard alcohol out of special containers, because screw a liquor license. The service was actually good. Not sure if it's because my friends buddies come often but the waitresses were really nice to us. The host even sat with us. The inside is dim and there are lots of tables and chairs. It's a little dirty inside since the drunks can get pretty crazy. If you're comfortable with going to a quan nhau place and like asian bars then this may be for you. Hungry while waiting for the 2 1/2 wait for Boiling Crab, we came here to grab an appetizer. The doors were opened and tempted us to come in with their dark atmosphere, flashing multi-colored lights, and their floating water bubble statue in front. The first thing I noticed when I actually went inside was that for a bar and grill, there was no bar and the place was pretty much filled with guys. One of the waitresses came to our table and my friend ordered a beer, but they were out and so she chose another beer. Me and my other friend just got water. Along with that, we were deciding whether we should order the fried tofu or the egg rolls. We asked her how many egg rolls came in a plate and the waitress said she didn't know - there was too many to count. WTF? We decided on the egg rolls anyways. The waitress came back and asked up if we ordered yet and then realized that she forgot our drinks. She came back with the beer and two bottles of costco water. I knew it wasn't free and I asked her how much the water was. She said she didn't know and went to go check. Another waitress came and we asked her how much the water was and she said $2! $2 for a bottle of costco water?! We could have bought a whole case of water with the amount we would have spent on two bottles. Not to mention, I probably could have found some water in the car... so we took the water back. Eventually, our food came and I have to admit, I don't know if I was hungry or what, but it looked and tasted pretty good. (BTW, there was 8 egg rolls...) While we were eating, some lady who I think either worked there or was associated with the restaurant somehow.just started literally yelling something in viet really loudly in the middle of the restaurant. The waitress comes and tells us to not worry, she's just a crazy lady. uhhhkayyy... I came here on a Tuesday night with my friends and I really liked the vibe of this place with all the lights and the dimness. The place is pretty roomy with a lot of tables. If you are looking to get full, this isn't really the place for you. It's a "quan nhau" so it's great if you want to just snack around while drinking a few beers. There is entertainment provided by a lady who sings on the stage. You're also welcome to go on stage and sing as well!!! The girls here are pretty chill and they'll open your beers for you and all that jazz. Although there are "No Smoking" signs, you are allowed to smoke in here. I'd give it 3.5 stars, but I'll round up for this one. They do take credit cards, only serve beer and wine (no liquor, but they do have Soju and sake), and lot and lots of tables for large parties. I went here for the first time ever last night. I'm not sure how I feel about it. The music is pretty loud, and the karaoke singing is awful. But the beer is pretty cheap ($2.50 each for a Blue Moon and other imports), and they serve it in buckets so you pay for what you drank. I won't go here on my own, but if my friends and I want some quick, cheap drinks in a nice, dim place this place ain't too shabby. When the karaoke wasn't playing, the music was pretty good (Metallica and the like). The service is ok. Old Vietnamese men would love this place. There's young Vietnamese girls with boob jobs opening bottles of beer for you, so who would complain about that? The boiling crab wait was 45 minutes, so I came in here for a beer because they had a sign outside saying happy hour beers were $1.99. I came in at 3:16 pm and all of their tables were pretty filthy. They open at 3 every day, so I'm guessing they didn't clean from the night before. The waitress handed me a menu, and it was disgusting. I should have taken a picture. The menu was covered in stains and was sticky. P.s. If you ask for water, they give you a bottle water... That they charge $2 for... Without telling you. Came here last nite with a group of 6. All the seafood was pretty fresh. Sea snail was the best one of all. We ordered every seafood dish there was on the menu. Everything tasted pretty good. The only thing bad was the loud Karaoke music. It was too loud and we couldn't talk. So we just eat & drink with not much conversation the entire nite. If they didn't have such loud music , we would have enjoyed it more. The service wasn't bad. We double checked our bill, but every dish was written in Vietnamese. We don't understand Vietnamese. Good place to hang out with friends and drink beer or soju. The soju is so sweet and strong. You can easily get drunk just drinking mango/peach soju. The food is good too. I really like the shaken beef and the grilled snails with butter and garlic. They are to die for. Waitresses are pretty and friendly ( most of them).
