This is a lovely Visitor Center with a trail just behind it down to the gorge. They have hot coffee and clean restrooms and I was able to get a lot of information about things that we want to do in the area. This visitor center also allows dogs inside which is awesome for us. It was only 34° when we arrived this morning and it was nice that we were both able to come in and look around instead of one of us having to wait in the car with our dog. We also took our dog on part of the trail, which currently has a detour but there were still plenty of hikers. You can get some cute little souvenirs here and definitely learn a lot more about the area. I'm very glad we stopped by.

Great stop with clean bathrooms when youre looking to see the gorge. There's a trail that you can walk, or you can walk the side of the road back to the bridge and take photos from there. Makes the gorge easily accessible for those looking to exert themselves and those who are not!

We had actually intended to visit Quechee State Park. We pulled into the first 'visitors center' we saw, which was apparently run by the chamber of commerce in whatever town this is located. The state park itself was a bit further down Woodstock Road (slightly further from the gorge itself). This area had truly nightmarish traffic. There are wide sidewalks / pedestrian paths one side of the road and then on both at the bridge over the gorge. There are also periodic crosswalks (the sort that cause traffic to halt). I'm not saying that's bad, but it does cause the traffic to back up. I'd be curious to know how many rear-ending accidents they have here per year. I would advise against trying any left turns out of parking lots anywhere near the gorge itself - just turn right and find somewhere a bit further on where you can turn around. As for this particular visitors center - it is free. They ask for donations, and given that it is convenient parking, I gave them $5. You can cross the road here and walk about 200 yards to the gorge itself. Along both sides of the bridge they conveniently have small openings in the chain link safety fencing (maybe 12 inches by 5 inches) such that you can get unobstructed photos of the scenery. The gorge appeared pretty deep (maybe 200 feet?). It was mostly in shadow by 3:20 p.m. in early October, though. You could probably get better photos from noon to 2 p.m., I'd guess. Alternatives to this visitors center for parking are the aforementioned state park (you may have to pay there?) and some old-style tourist trap places adjacent to the gorge (where more tour buses pull in). Also from the VC, you can approach the gorge from a woodland trail. It is a bit longer and hillier than the paved path, but much quieter. However, when we visited, the trail's underpass at the bridge was being reconstructed. That meant that you couldn't actually approach the gorge itself without descending a steep 1/4-mile trail. We had to backtrack to the VC and start over. I *think* that normally you can just go underneath the bridge and come out at the tourist trap lot, from which you can access the bridge directly. I don't have any idea when construction will finish, so you may want to ask before choosing a route. The gorge is worth seeing, but don't expect a quiet visit in a 'nature' setting.

One of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

We stayed next door, at the Alton Inn & walked over the bridge at sunrise. It was so beautiful, although we had driven over it a few times to just stand, look out and look beneath was amazing. Definitely recommend to anyone visiting the area, pictures attached!

This place is pretty awesome. Really glad we stopped here. Plus the food place right next-door is amazing. The people are friendly and they have some pretty cool stuff to purchase. And check out the large Crevice (gorge) when you stop. It will make you say Wow!

Alpacas! Great shops, fun nostalgia from an 80s youth AND a great antique store! There's also a brewery next door with great options!

We actually came in the grab a sandwich or something for lunch but there was nothing available. We asked but during our visit, the bar was closed where you can get some snack items. Looks like ice cream is there too, which was also closed. The llama's out back are cute. If you have some change you can buy them some feed. One of the stores sells Llama wool items which are very warm and cozy. I recommend getting some socks if you have cold feet in the winter months. I purchased some for a relative. The other stores sell jewelry, clothing, cheese and antiques. You can access one store from another inside the building. Public restrooms are available between the antique store and the cheese shop. A very large, dirt parking lot in front includes handicap spaces by one of the entrances.

It was very hot the day and you are forced immediately off the trolley to sit in a glassed in pouch that was 112 degrees for 20 minutes, which sets the tone of the experience in a negative way. You view the mansion hot and sweaty, which stinks (Pun intended). Even if it wasn't hot, people should have the option to skip the video. 2. The trolly is supposed to cycle every 15 minutes (trolly even said it on the way up). We waited over 30 minutes. 3. Some guests were chastised for things that could have been easily avoided by putting up signs. If you don't want people doing things which seem perfectly acceptable to do, put a sing up or put it at the end of your 20 minute video. I think the guests who were talked down too felt embarrased and it was unnecessary. 4. When you drive up to the attraction, there is parking, by the cafe. We parked, got out, and had to go up to some people working in the park to find that we had to continue driving up the mountain to get to the carriage house. Are signs that expensive? "Keep driving to see Castle In The Clouds" or "This way to see Castle in the Clouds".

Our first visit to Windham Hill Inn was over 25 years ago for an autumn wedding anniversary…read moreget-away. We have returned about 10 times since then as the ambiance and atmosphere of both the Inn and the West Townshend VT area have 'called' to us. We have loved the historic feel of the farm, the amazing food and generous and down-home hospitality. One of the greatest charms has been the individual and very unique feel and character of each room - no two are even closely alike. The original farm house which housed the kitchen, bar, living room, and dining area also had some 12-14 guest rooms. There is a second building on the property, a 140 year old dairy barn that has been converted to an additional 8 guest rooms. It also has a shared large living room / lounge with fireplace and full kitchen in the lowest level. With wide wood plank floors, four poster beds, fireplaces and soaking tubs, these rooms range from intimate and 'cozy' to spacious and airy. The original farm-house building was struck by lightning in the spring of 2021 resulting in a serious fire that did significant damage. This main building remains closed and repairs are still being planned. The entire property closed for a while and finally reopened, but in a somewhat limited capacity. Only the rooms in the barn are currently available and they are open in a self-serve type manner. You can reserve your room online and then receive a door access code to your room on the day of your arrival. You can check yourself into the room using the door code, though during our recent visit in May/June 2024 the friendly and welcoming caretaker Jason was present to welcome us. The barn building and rooms, as well as the pool and local grounds are all being well cared for and are in very good condition. There is no on-site food service available which is still a little disappointing. The 4 star cuisine (included in the original room prices) was one of the great appeals of the Inn prior to the fire. Room rates are now much lower which should make this an even more appealing (read affordable) destination. You should consider bringing your own supply of snacks to tide you over between meals. There is a small mini-refrigerator in each room to keep bottles, cans and perishables fresh. There was no ice in the room yet Jason offered to get some for us if needed. There is a Keurig coffee machine in the common area which was stocked with some tea and bold coffee along with creamer / half and half. We took a couple small coolers with us, one in which to put a small bag of ice purchased at a local convenience store and the other to hold our crackers, cheese, nuts, and other snacks. Beds are large (Queen or King) with memory foam toppers - tending toward being a bit soft. There is a large TV in the room with many options and there is robust WiFi inside the building. There is no daily room / cleaning service currently. West Townshend is a very rural area with few dining options. If you are here on a Friday from mid-may to October (4:30--7:00 PM) you should consider visiting the West Townshend Country Store at the bottom of the hill. They have an outdoor pizza oven with picnic tables. People come from all over for a pizza with locally sourced toppings, to sip some beer or wine, listen to live music and shop the pop-up farm stands for locally made crafts and food items. If looking for a variety of dining options, you need to travel 25+ minutes back toward Brattleboro or out toward Stratton Mountain and Manchester. While the 150+ acres of the property do offer some hiking trails, there are also many other local places, a short drive away, to explore the outdoors. Our favorite go-to is Jamaica State Park and a 5.5 mile (total out and back) easy-to-moderate hike up to Hamilton Falls. If covered bridges are your thing - there are several within a short drive of the property. We truly love our visits to Windham Hill along with the beautiful sweeping vistas and very quiet and laid back ambiance. We look forward to returning here again, many more times. We hope the owners do consider renovating the original farm house and bringing back some of the additional appeal of the original operation.
