Waiting Area for Quest Diagnostics in Mountain View.
    Richard G.

Since I had to choose a new medical Dr. that honored Covered CA patients he gave me a prescription for a blood draw from Quest Diagnostics. I had never heard of them but it appears Quest Diagnostics and Lab Corp. are the two independent labs medical doctors use. Apparently I found out Quest Diagnostics locations are carefully hidden away in the back of Safeway Chain stores. I noticed the good reviews on Yelp of the one hidden in the Safeway in Mountain View that was nearby and decided to go here. I got there early and found the door at the very back of the Safeway with a sign for Quest Diagnostics next to the pharmacy. First thing I found out the hard way that if you don't enter your information at the Quest Diagnostics kiosk nothing is going to happen. This is either you have or don't have an appointment. This is a no frills place where in my case the Phlebotomist stayed in her room until the computer tells her from the kiosk will she come out and ask for you by name. If I had known that I could have saved me a lot of time. So I wound up waiting over an hour to figure that out while patients with appointments came and went. Lesson learned. The Phlebotomist I saw that day was a nice mature lady named Minka from Bulgaria. She was very friendly and talkative. I was shocked when she started to pull out so many blood specimen vials for my blood draw. She was very nice about it and I did get a bit of a bruise that took a while to heal. I read on the wall that all the specimens go to Sacramento for analysis. At least I got it done and since I had to not eat for 8 hours prior to the blood draw it was nice to treat myself to a Starbucks on my way out of the Safeway feeling hungry and a pound lighter!

She instructed me to make an appointment by phone, so I felt confident about coming in. However, the actual visit was a completely different experience. The testing site was an RV with a bathroom inside, and that's where I had to provide my urine sample. I also needed a hair test, but I was concerned that the technician did not collect the hair properly. Instead of taking a sample close to the scalp, she simply cut off a section of hair from the ends, which ended up causing me to repeat the test later on. I also realized that the same woman who answered the phone was the technician performing the collections, handling the paperwork, and processing payments. She was essentially a one-person operation. I genuinely felt bad for her because she was clearly overwhelmed, and the scheduling and flow of appointments were poorly managed. I had a 10:00 AM appointment but didn't leave until around 1:00 PM. After waiting about an hour, a person who had arrived earlier but hadn't been able to provide a urine sample was allowed to go before me once he was ready. Then another individual who had an earlier appointment but arrived late was also seen before me. By that point, I had already been waiting approximately 2 hours despite arriving early for my scheduled appointment. The woman working there was kind and informative, but the long wait times and disorganized appointment process made for a very disappointing experience. I hope they can improve staffing and scheduling because there is definitely room for a much better customer experience.

I first called the office to make an appointment and she was very rude and seemed irritated when answering my questions. At my appointment, she was very curt and impolite as well. After giving her my urine sample, she instantly said that I would not pass and pretty much accused me of diluting my urine. I only had maybe 20 ounces of water 45 minutes prior to my test. My urine did look more on the clear side but keep in mind my test was at 3 pm in the afternoon. I can understand her assumptions, but it's inappropriate to make any conclusions if you aren't the actual one performing a lab test. I asked her what further actions I can take and why she was saying I would not pass, and again, she was VERY rude and did not want to answer any of my questions. She told me that prior to my drug test, I should not be drinking water for two days and that my body will "naturally" produce enough water for me. She told me that when the lab would receive my urine, they won't even test the sample and automatically mark my sample as diluted. Never have I heard that and if it were true, it should and would've been prefaced prior to my appointment. She rudely rushed me out of her office feeling very unsettled and panicked, as this employment test is very important for my career. I was scrambling around, calling HR and my supervisor if I can order another test. After asking around nurses, doctors, AND employees that actually work at a lab, they told me that what I was told, was absolute bullshit and to not worry. Two days later, my employer received my lab test, in contrast to Dr. Mersedeh Eghdami's beliefs, they were able to test my sample. Save your money and your time, and go somewhere else. My experience here was very terrible and unpleasant from the moment I called to make an appointment. As a medical professional, how can you make a client feel so unsettled walking out?

I did see a lot of walk-ins come in, which made the place look crowded; however, if you have an appointment, you do get priority. Once you enter the place, check in at the kiosk, and then the lady at the reception will call your name to process your information, following which you'll be called for the test. The technicians can be a hit or miss. Some are gentle and take care, while others don't. Overall not my favorite place to be at, but not the worst experience either.

I understand it can be frustrating to deal with patients when a language barrier is involved, but frankly if you are driven to loudly yelling at a couple (with the door of the examination room OPEN), I think you fundamentally do not belong in the medical field. The way she treated them was rude, disrespectful and frankly racist. The couple maintained their composure and treated the MA with respect during the entire interaction. The couple tried to get the MA to use a translation app on their phone, which she repeatedly ignored at first. Eventually she did use the translation app with visibale irritation and lots of eye rolling. If I were in managment at this clinic I would be honestly ashamed of my employee's conduct and lack of basic human decency. Also repeatedly yelling something in a louder and angrier voice does not make it any easier for a non-english speaker to understand you. I would not reccomend going to this LabCorp location if you have any choice in the matter.

Inside the blood draw room, there were over 100 vials of patient's blood in sealed test tubes sitting upright in racks. Hmm. I wondered why these weren't in a refrigerator. I also was surprised that there were metal Lab Specimen pick up boxes bolted to the outside wall of the building. It was very hot the day I visited the lab and the sun was beating down on the Lab Specimen pick up boxes. One said LabCorp and the other said Quest. The Phlebotomist was very prompt and came out to get me in the lobby on time. She was very sweet. I did not have a good experience with the draw, however. She used a large gauge needle without a Butterfly. It felt like she hit a nerve, or tendon when she inserted the needle. Right after the draw, I had pain right below where she inserted the needle. When I opened an closed my arm it hurt. This continued for a month. I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, a connective tissue disease and my tissues are very fragile. I should have asked the Phlebotomist to use a smaller gauge needle, but I had forgotten. I share my experience with a UCSF Phlebotomist who told me that it sounded like the LabCorp Phlebotomist was in training, because it it standard procedure to use a smaller gauge needle on a very thin arm and a butterfly is always used, as well. When I think about the 100 + test tubes of patient's blood sitting on the counter, I wondered, if the way specimens are stored at this lab location, may have something to do with all of my tests be negative. It is food for thought.
