There have been only a couple questionable issues over the years. Nothing to stop using him for or to write a yelp/google review about though. I would have suggested his shop to anyone up until last week. My Jetta has had 3 or 4 different issues in the last 3 months, suspension, exhaust and brakes..... Darren always provides a quote over the phone before work being done so I can ok it. This past week I asked for a quote on brakes. He had told me when I got my suspension fixed a few months earlier that they were going to be my next issue. He told me on the phone that brakes and rotors for the entire car would cost me about $900 dollars. He said the price could rise if he found there was anything wrong with the calibers. I asked how much he said he would not know until he looked at the car. Because this was my first brake job I called around to compare. I called a mechanic shop in Braintree and the nice gentleman explained that it too should only cost $900 dollars and calibers were not typically a needed fix but it would be around $125 for each caliber but in his 15 years he had never seen all 4 calibers needed to be fixed at once. The VW dealership quoted me $1300 over the phone. So, naturally I went with Darren. When I called Darren to get the final price a few days later he stated $1400 dollars. I was shocked. I said you said $900 where did $1400 come from? Did you have to replace calibers. He said no kind of laughed and said its $1400. When I picked it up he said to come back later in the week for an invoice. This is not a way to treat return customers. Thats $500 more than quoted and I still have no invoice to see why the massive jump? I called him back today to ask for more detail and why it was so much and he said he will strip the brakes and I can go somewhere else. So I called the other Braintree mechanic they still said $900. I called Darren back he said $500 to strip the car. I stated that we had worked with him for over 10 years and this feels like robbery and poor customer service treatment. He was yelling at me. Even though we're not in Texas, having a car without a functioning A/C is a quick way to make driving miserable. As they say, the proof is in the pudding. I can turn on my A/C after the car sits in the noon sun, and have it already blowing cold in a minute or two. This confirmed that Tom's does quality work, and while the parts may cost more, you know everything will work as it should. Being someone who needs A/C to live, worth every penny. I called and was able to make an appointment without a problem. Tom was great about keeping me in the loop about whether he was able to obtain the needed part and let me know when the car was all set. This may seem small, but keeping the customer in the loop is pretty underrated. I also asked to see the old compressor afterward, and they were able to show me what was wrong with it and causing it to make noise. The repair was not cheap, with the compressor alone coming in at around $400. I mentioned that I saw the part for $200-something online. I was told that because they answer for the work, they need to be able to quickly obtain a new part if the one they had was defective. Ordering online would mean us having to wait for a while while the new one comes in, which could take a while. Not to mention I would either be out a car, or there'd be extra labor in assembling/reassembling. The higher price was at least in part due to several markups along the supply chain.
