Be careful. The folks at REM are always pleasant, especially over the phone. Unfortunately, that's the only positive thing I can say about the company. Once you need something fixed at your apartment - they become very 'busy' or 'the cell phone broke today' , excuses, excuses... Our apartment frequently has no hot water (one out of every 10 mornings), I've gone without heat for 3-4 days at a time and we get water leaks consistently. Not all problems the are REMs fault , but they manage the apartments and do not fix the issues. Talking with neighbors - we're all experiencing similar problems. I've had to file multiple complaints with 311. Be careful how much REM raises your rent each year. I'm sure there are worse management companies out there - but I'd hope I never do business with them. read more

REM was my property manager for my apartment in the West Village - online payments were really easy, they sent helpful reminders and Rick was extremely responsive whenever I had a question about the apartment. They even helped me move out before the end of my lease with no penalty! read more

They are holding your deposit. I've already moved out of my previous apt. for three months, but they still cant tell me when I will recieve my money. All they say is they dont Know cuz the landlord is in CA, Which is rediculous...very pissed... also, their response is always late. not a good management company. Better be carefull. read more

We've been living in an REM-managed space for several years now, and have always had good, prompt response and service. Our apartment is in a mid-1800s brownstone, and like all apartments, has had the odd maintenance issue come up over the years. REM has always been quick to resolve the issue and I don't think we've ever waited an unreasonable amount of time to have things done. The super is always available, and I see him almost every day out in front of the building. I see him tidying up the trash area, hosing off the sidewalk, etc. The building itself is very well maintained, with planted flower boxes, new paint, clean carpets, etc. I've had many conversations with people at REM, and it's clear that they are good, solid folks. They know they're tenants, and show real concern for their well-being. If you pay your rent on time, are pleasant with their staff, and are a reasonable person, you can expect the same in return. read more

I currently live and have lived in an REM residential building for the past 3 years and there's a reason why I have renewed my lease several times now. I am very happy with my situation: management, super, and overall value. Management is always very responsive to my inquires (Rick and Shpresa always return my calls / e-mails) and my super Chris works extremely hard to make sure that the tenants' day-to-day experience is enjoyable. Whenever I move out of this apartment, I will try to move into another one of their properties because I have been pleased with my experience. read more

We have been battling a mice infestation for 6 months now. REM and their incompetent exterminators are useless. The mice are here to stay, that's for sure. The rent is also going up $250 (but why not?) to $2,350 for a studio with roaches and mice above the trash room and no sunlight. The washer has been broken for 4 weeks now. We are finally moving from this hellhole. As I have mentioned before, if you have a choice, do not rent with REM. read more

I lived at 940 St. Nicholas (managed by REM) for several years, and as I was looking around Yelp, I was surprised to across the negative reviews. I feel like I really have to share my personal experience (maybe it's unique, but I know several other people who moved into our building and felt exactly the same way). From the moment we signed the lease on our apartment (which was GORGEOUS, btw), we always felt that the company was listening to us, and whenever there was a problem, they addressed it immediately. Our upstairs neighbor caused an electrical fire soon after we moved in, and our newly renovated apartment was flooded in the walls by the fire department's hoses. Within two hours, in the middle of the night, a representative from management was there to see what we needed, and within 24 hours, a crew had come in to cut holes in the walls and dry everything out. They offered to put my family in a hotel while the work was being done, but we chose to stay (I had two small children, and it was too much trouble). It took about a week for all the walls to be dried out with industrial fans, and there were more than 30 1 foot by 1 foot holes in our walls, but a second crew came in and immaculately repaired the drywall and repainted everything. We were credited on our rent for the days we had the workers in, and I was totally satisfied. Our super, Ali, was ALWAYS available in a reasonable amount of time, and was always polite and helpful. As for rent increases, they were fair, and REM negotiated with us both times to make sure we were happy and didn't feel gouged. I've also seen other REM-managed buildings, and they are considerably cleaner and quieter than comparable buildings in the neighborhoods. I would rent from them again if I ever moved back to NYC. read more

This management company has been amazing. They are both very friendly and professional, but more importantly, they are very responsive. I have a leak and call R.E.M., it gets repaired immediately. That is a rarity with management companies these days. Not only will they get someone to you right away to make the repairs you need, but they want to make sure you as a tenant are happy. As a family of two working parents with three children, my husband and I don't have the time to chase around a management company for the repairs I need, luckily with R.E.M. I don't have to. They make the apartment searching process easy from start to finish. I told them what I was looking for and they found me EXACTLY what I was looking for. They made the process quick, easy and painless. I used to dread calling my old management company if I had a question or an issue. I used to hope to leave a message b/c I didn't want to deal with a nasty manager. NOW, with R.E.M. I look forward to speaking to one of their staff members. I've had some positive and negative experiences with this bunch. Over the course of living in a building managed by them for 2 years, I'd say everything was pretty average. However, my move-in & move-out do not leave me with a good taste in my mouth. When I first moved in, there was still construction being done on the apartment. Of course, the fact that it was being renovated was a plus- however the Russian contractor and his preteen son should not be walking in and out of my apartment as they pleased my first 10 days living there. Not only was the apartment not done, it also was not clean. There was a thick layer of sawdust covering everything. And I mean everything. Also, the bathroom looked as if it had not been cleaned in years. Of course when I moved in, I saw the situation and did the best I could before my movers arrived with all my things. That did not stop the contractor and his son from allowing themselves to use my bathroom all week long after. Mostly everything that needed to be taken care of was done efficiently. A leaking drain in both the bathroom and kitchen were quickly attended to, as was a cracking ceiling. The hallways were even redone. One issue that really bugged me was that there had been someone writing on the walls of the building. My video intercom had been out for almost a year, which I reported but was never fixed. When the vandalism started, I emphasized the importance of it being fixed because it was a safety issue for me, being a girl who lives alone. They promised it would be fixed and now, 9 months later, nada. When I first moved in, I admit I really got a bargain for the space, but I did need to pay the 15% broker's fee to REM's in-house broker. After my first year, the rent went up $200. I obliged. Now, they are asking another $250. No thanks. I was lucky to easily find another apartment when I found out I had to move. I immediately started to pack my belongings because I only had a couple of weeks. When REM's broker came to browse my space, she asked me if I could "clean up" my apartment so she could come back and take nice pictures. Babe, I'm not your cleaning lady. This is my apartment, and I still live here. I do a thorough cleaning regularly, but if my boxes and luggage bother you- tough s***. People like me pay your ridiculous broker's fees. read more

My building and the building next door are maintained/managed by REM. Both buildings are well maintained, clean, and solid walls. Any issues (ie clogged bathtub) were dealt by the super very quickly. I feel very safe in my building with the new security camera system set up at the entrance and hallways. I would be happy to upgrade to another one of their buildings in the future. read more

I have lived in one of REM's properties in Harlem for two years. Shortly after I began my tenancy, our property manager was changed to Rashaad Middleton. He has been responsive to issues and has even texted me into the late evening to ensure a heat issue was resolved. I have to admit that I began with an adversarial position because of a past manager; however, Rashaad's attention to the building, and my concerns has won me over. I just renewed for a third year in a larger apartment in the same building. Both Yuliya and Spresa were supportive in my request for a larger apartment in the same building, and made the process very easy for me. We have had issues with loud tenants, excessive smoking and dog poop around the building, and Rashaad never hesitated to address the issues. We have, for the most part, a group of caring and concerned tenants, and we appreciate the effort on the part of management to create and keep a clean and enjoyable space for its tenants. I point out things to our Super, and he is always responsive -- even when I am being a bit of a pain. When I hear tenants complain about anything I ask "did you call Rashaad?" Invariably, they had not made the call. I shared that everything I called about was addressed; however, you have to let him know. I say to the folks who may be looking for a nice apartment on a beautiful block to have a look. The more involved tenants we have, the better our living environment. I plan to stay for quite awhile. I have lived in an REM building on Irving place for the last 5 years. When I first moved in they replaced all of the appliances without the need to ask them, accommodated me on an earlier move-in date, the hardwood flooring was re-polished and everything looked extremely tidy. I've been in the same apartment since 2009. I work in commercial real estate, therefore I understand the challenges they face as building managers and its not an easy business.
