Lovely paved trails…read more The BLK Hiking Club started their 2024 hiking season at this park. It was my first hike in GA in over a decade. The Hog Mountain entrance has plenty of parking (our group was over 120 people). The bathrooms are adjacent to the parking lot and were clean and stocked. The water was cold but the hand dryers have warm air so your hands will warm right up on cold days. The map by the parking lot and bathrooms shows the routes of various lengths. The trails are paved and easy to navigate with only slight elevations on the 2 mile trail. Our group of over 120 people had plenty of space and room on the trail (walking 2 by 2). Along the trail there are benches and picnic areas. Overall, this is a beautiful, serene hike that is great for groups. I highly recommend it.

The Bad thing that makes me grade this park so low: My kids now call it the Stranger Danger Park…read more The lack of police presence worries me. This is a big park that is busy with all ages. When we arrived there was a red van with all the window shades red with an old grey haired man driving. He park 4 space across from us facing the playground. I noticed another man just sitting on one of the benches nicely dressed on his phone right by the playground watching the kids play. The man sitting got up after he noticed I saws starring at him, we went to a blacked out Audi that was facing the playground. He sat in his car, watching the playground and talking on his phone. The gentleman in the red van at that time backed out of his parking spot that he was in and moved to the opposite side of the parking lot. He was not facing the playground, but I noticed he was watching his rearview mirrors. I notified my brother who was with us and he went by the red van in the gentleman, and the van followed him. The gentleman and the black out, Audi backed out and left the park . The gentleman in the red van then moved to another parking spot between two vehicles face the playground again. My brother and I decided to leave with the kids. after we got the kids in the car seats my brother went to inform parents on the play about what we have been watching. The mother with 3 young girls had my brother walk with her to her vehicle that was two spaces from the red van. I watched the man in the red van watching me and others in the playground. When my brother got in the vehicle to leave the red van moved again. This time he got out the van walked around to the passenger side and opened the sliding door. As he was getting back in his drivers seat he starred us down. I decided to go to the restroom s and call the police. As I was on the phone and lady over heard me talking to the 911 operator, she stop and questioned me. She got worried because the red van was parked next to her vehicle and she had two kids. My brother offered to bring her and the kids to her vehicle, but the kids were still at practice. We decided to move closer to the gates so we could watch for the police and watch to see if the van lift the park. As we were sitting in the vehicle waiting on the police we noticed the man in the Audi was back in the park. We waited for 32 minutes and decided to just leave the kid were not feeling to good, the heat and spinning. I don't know what happened after we left, never received a call back from the police. I did see the lady waiting for her kids was telling all the parents around her and entering the park. She was not getting in her vehicle until the police arrived. The Good: The kids loved the playground and all they could play on. We even got some National Geographic Books for kids.

I LOVE group hikes, but I cherish deeply the alone value of a solo hike. [ TODAY'S TRAIL ENCOUNTER ] God made me adventurous, there is no doubt about that. The thought of exploring someplace new brings so much excitement and anticipation that I literally tingle inside. So today when I decided to hike a 1.5 mile section of the equestrian trail that I've never taken, even I was surprised at just how eager I was to walk it. I've hiked almost every non-biking trail in this park, but for some reason I've never stepped foot on this segment. Would it be difficult? Would it look different than other parts of the trail? How long before I connect to a section I recognize? And my most dominant thought: Will I meet any horses along the way? I've logged dozens and dozens of hikes here @ Harbins park and not once have I ever met a horse on the trail itself. I find it rather ironic that I get so very excited about the unknown of new hiking trails and vacation destinations, but get so worried over life and its unknowns, especially when it takes unexpected turns. I pondered this clash in thinking as I walked and prayed, asking for guidance and courage for life's challenges. As if on cue, I rounded a section of the trail only to see a deer sitting in wait along the trail. I've never seen a deer just chillaxing like that ever with its legs folded below its body (just like my cat sitting on her favorite ottoman peering out the window). I was thrilled, but I couldn't get my camera out fast enough to capture the image before it stood and ran off into the woods. While I would come to encounter about a half dozen more deer during my short walk, I kept hoping to see a horse. I figured the chances were extremely low since my hike would be shorter than normal (3 miles instead of 9) and I'd never seen one here on the trails before. There is a point on the equestrian trail where you can either continue or taken an emergency exit trail that bypasses nearly 3.5 miles of the main trail. Since I'd just hiked 8 miles the day before, I decided to take the shortcut and give my old legs a rest. But as good fortune would have it, I discovered two riders walking their horses on this side trail. I couldn't believe my eyes!! How odd that I would get my wish on a shortcut route I generally never use. What was even more interesting is I knew one of the riders from church. I've invited her & her family many times to join one of the OFF-THE-GRID yelp hikes that I host monthly. As we talked, I shared the date of the next upcoming hike and wouldn't you know it, she is free! God works in mysterious ways indeed! [ AMENITIES ] What an amazing park!!! * Harbins Park is the largest Gwinnett County park @ 1,960 acres * Trails include a 4.3-mile paved multi-purpose trail, 7-mile equestrian trail, 13-mile mountain biking trail and 4.5-mile hiking trail. * Several playground, picnic pavilions, grills, restrooms, and parking areas including an equestrian trailer parking. * The Football Complex has a lighted walking track, dog park, lake, and 1.5-mile paved trail. * The Baseball Complex includes seven baseball/softball fields, restrooms, concessions, and a LARGE parking area. * The main park also has a water pump in the parking area to rinse trail mud off your mountain bike. * Believe it or not, the public restrooms are generally clean, stocked and SMELL GOOD!!! [ FINAL THOUGHTS ] I ponder a great many things, wishing for answers and hoping for wisdom to better manage life's complexities. Like most people, when it comes to life I just want to know where it's going. Funny how something as simple as a hike can reveal small truths. I didn't realize that we couldn't drive all the way to the trailhead so we had a long hike in store due to me having to carry my toddler most of the time. I should have re-read the previous reviews before coming. My friend did help me carry her as well and for that I was very thankful. So definitely don't recommend this hike with a little one unless strapped in a carrier. Also, I don't recommend it for the elderly either. It's definitely a wilderness hike deal with roots and elevation change. In fact, it's mostly downhill on the way to the falls, but on the way back it's pretty much all uphill, which was not fun with aforementioned young child. It's about a half mile to the actual trailhead and then another 0.7 mile to the falls. That's about 2.4 miles round trip. The reason of course that my boys absolutely became enamored with this place is the large swimming hole. It is wonderful and has plenty of space. The waterfall itself is beautiful and although it's not as tall as others, its width is quite impressive. I was trying to get as close as I could and even noticed a hidden part of the falls inside of the rock structure. That was so cool!! The sand at the base and shore give it a beachy vibe. We definitely packed it in and out making sure not to leave anything behind as to preserve the area as best as possible. Needless to say we were wiped by the time we made it back to our vehicles, but we're still glad we decided to venture here. Coming back with my hubby and boys in the very near future. Happy yelping!

I just wanted to update my 3/15/20 review below to add I've now done this hike several times, but…read moreTHIS time I had the chance to hike it with a friend who is directly related to the namesake of the waterfall... Riley Moore. Sandie is a church friend of mine and Riley Moore was her Great Great Uncle (I believe that's right). He once upon a time operated a grist mill here at the top of the falls. She's been trying to get here to see the waterfall, but couldn't find it and wanted to join us (along with her family) since I knew the way. Upon further research I discovered there are actually still remnants of the mill including visible drill holes, spikes and bolts. Thought that was pretty cool info to share! [ [ [ PREVIOUS REVIEW ] ] ] Riley Moore Falls is small in height but HUGE in personality. It's located off State Road S37-748, which is a nicely maintained gravel road where cars and trucks alike can comfortably traverse. ~~~ DIRECTIONS From Westminster, SC - DO NOT turn onto Cobb Bridge Road from Long Creek Hwy (Hwy 76) where you will see the brown & white sign pointing you in the direction of Riley Moore Falls. Our GPS had us go this way, then left onto State Road S37-748, but the road was CLOSED during our visit! INSTEAD, turn onto PU-32 also known as Rocky Fork Road. Turn left onto a gravel road near Rocky Fork Baptist Church and follow that until it dead ends @ State Road S37-748 (also known as Spy Rock Road). Turn right and drive approx. 1.4 miles (4 minutes) to 748c (aka Riley Moore Shoals Road). Park at the intersection of State Road S37-748 and 748c. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DRIVE 748c in a car or minivan. Low clearance vehicles will find the terrain on this road to be VERY difficult to navigate without bottoming out or getting stuck. I'd also recommend 4x4 capability on wet days! There can be several deep-pocketed muddy areas after heavy rains. ~~~ THE TRAIL Once you reach the intersection of Spy Rock Rd (S37-748) and 748c, park roadside on Spy Rock, secure your vehicle and begin your hike approx. 1/2 mile down the "primitive road." IF you have a high ground clearance SUV or truck, you can drive the primitive road another half mile or so to a second parking area near the trailhead. The primitive road is VERY BUMPY and can be muddy in spots after heavy rains, so a 4x4 is best. After reaching the second parking area, follow the marked trail on the left!!! The trail is a little over a 1/2 mile to the falls from here. The trail is fairly straightforward and easy to follow. ~~~ THE FALLS Once you reach the Chauga River, you will notice a large sandy area with plenty of room for an entire horde of hikers!!! Riley Moore Falls is not very tall (only about 12 feet), but it is very wide and has a deep base pool. PRO TIP - Bring swimwear, towels and a picnic, but be sure to pack it in and pack it out. ~~~ THINGS TO KNOW Hiking Distance: 2 miles (round trip to falls from S37-748) Difficulty of hiking 748c: All downhill to trailhead (moderate return) Difficulty of hiking trail to falls: EASY Creek Crossings: NO Elevation Gain: 357 feet Waterfall Height: Approx 12 feet Access to top of falls: NO - not without getting wet Access to base of falls: YES Pool of water @ base of Falls: YES Sitting areas @ base: YES + sandy beach RESTROOMS: NO PARKING: YES (along road) + secondary parking area closer to trailhead for trucks and high ground clearance vehicles with room for about 6 cars. ~~~ [ FINAL THOUGHTS ] A lovely waterfall in any season, but also a great spot for a summer swim. While we had the waterfall practically to ourselves during our Mid-March expedition, be advised other trail website reviews say it gets trashy & crowded in summer months. Located pretty hidden from…read morethe main roads on Collins Hill Park, this park is pretty close to Collins Hill High School so you'll occasionally see the high school students playing basketball (yes they do have a basketball court) or do some training. This park is huge, and it has a lot of facilities, including a basketball court and a semi-beautiful lake/creek you can look at while you're taking a jog/walk. What I really like about this park is that it has a trail that's really similar to a hike; it's not paved roads and it's kind of in the backyard-ish area, so you'll see inclines and it really feels similar to a hike. Every time I record a jog, I see that one full lap around the entire trail is 1.4 miles, so it's a pretty great place to work out. I come here with my mom pretty frequently to get jogs when I'm getting tired of Rock Springs Park (another great park), but this is another great 5-star hidden gem park that's worth checking out!

1/20/2021 Bryson…read morePark has a paved trail that splits off in about 3 directions. The entirety of these interconnected paved paths is about 1.5 miles. The main trail located near the playground loops around making it .5 miles, but if you take the stairs up to the field there is another.5 miles of paved track. Also off of the main trail near the backside soccer fields is a walk way that takes you pass the parking lot and the trail continues around. All in all it is a nice park with friendly people. There are no steep hills or rocky areas making this trail an easy walk/run. The park is also equipped with soccer fields, a basketball court and small playground. My dog loved the walk and getting to meet other friendly dogs, however there is not a separate dog area or any big open spaces ( besides for the gated soccer field)

I use to live much closer but now I'm in another area so can't visit as much. I still know a few people who own shops/stores in the area...so I come by..say hi then stop in the park to take a walk. There are dining areas to grill out. I have only used the running trail here although there are playgrounds for kids and a sand volleyball court near the entrance.
