I picked up 2 Traxxas Slashes for both myself and my kiddo after Don walked us through many options and helped us pick the best choice for what we plan on doing with our RC's. Pricing was on point with the big online outfits but with the added bonus of a knowledgeable, helpful, and accommodating business owner face to face. I was actually surprised the owner asked me if I needed help when he had two other customers. I'm surprised because most stores I walk into don't like me maybe because I look a little intimidating. Needless to say I spent 1000 dollars here for that very reason. I like being able to walk in and support a local business anyway. I popped into this store today with a friend. Don was so helpful, he spent well over an hour talking to us about converting our Slashes to drag. He was so knowledgeable a wealth of info! I called Don up asked him if he has some parts I needed. He said yes. I drove over from Calabasas to Simi. By the time I got there, it was almost 430. Don is the best. I've been in and out of RC since 1984. Started with 7.2v nicad, then 1/6 Nitro and now back to modern lipo electric vehicles. I visited RPH and was immediately greeted by Don who asked me how he could help and what I was looking for. There were several opportunities for Don to upsell me or provide an overkill product but he steered me to the appropriate cars and accessories. He was honest, friendly, attentive pre and post sale. The guy knows the hobby in and out. Shop was well stocked with parts, cars, tools, and accessories. It was clean and in a nice area. Ignore the other reviews, and go check out Race Prep Hobbies. Great little hobby shop of LA Ave in Simi. Plenty of RC cars, boats and other fun toys. Nice selection with differing price ranges. Full repair shop. Parking can be a bit tight at times, but the employees are friendly and knowledgeable. Some Sundays you can find them out back racing cars on obstacle tracks. Great little outing for kids. I was recently gifted some 15-20 plus year old rc equipment and brought it over and Don was honest enough to tell me that it wouldn't be worth the trouble to spend the money to try and fix them up because parts aren't readily available for them. He hooked me up w a few small parts and a little Fuel to try and start it up for free and thought that was super cool of him. New to crawling and was amped to find out there was a hobby shop here in Simi. Went there last Tuesday. Told the guy manning the store that I was looking for a Traxxas charger and LiPo 5800 mAh battery combo (which was on sale for $99 on Amazon). Guy told me he had the charger and a 5000 mAh battery for $100. Told him, for the same price and a bigger capacity battery, I'd have to go with Amazon. He tells me that "they don't sell those with 5800 mAh or else Traxxas will sue them." Showed him the Amazon description that clearly states the battery's 5800 mAh. He offered me a $10 discount, and said that the extra 800 mAh only adds a 3-minute runtime. Strike one. I told the guy I really want to support his business and didn't want to leave without buying something. Asked him if they had a Pro-line universal LED headlight and tail light kit. "Pro-line doesn't have those." I showed him the Amazon link. Guy says it's the first time he's seen it. Strike two. I did buy a 4" LED light bar, just because I'm planning to mail it to my brother in Calgary. We went to two hobby shops there last weekend and 4" light bars were out of stock. If not because of that, I'd have been ok not buying anything. Then again, I shouldn't have bought it ($49 vs $44 on Amazon), but I kept my word when I told the guy I wanted to support his business. But the next time would be a long time, if ever. read more

Don't go here if you have a difficult fix on one of your RCs. Was hoping to get my eRevo fixed since I don't have the skill set to do it myself. Was told by the owner that he hates working on those. Small businesses like this run by good honest people are what America is about and rather than using a massive heartless company to simply ship their goods. I see no downside to going with Race Prep. You will get competitive pricing, product advice and support from an expert who actually cares about your happiness, and honest guidance by people who want you to spend your money wisely and enjoy yourself. I would not hesitate to go with Race Prep in the future, especially over the click and ship monstrosities they compete with. Because of the quality of service found here I will do my best to support these quality people. It's not every day that businesses are as honest and caring as Race Prep and after dealing with them I see no reason to go anywhere else. What's not to love about Race Prep Hobbies. How nice to not have to drive out of Simi Valley. My son and I have planes and a car. Robert is a pleasure to work with when it comes to planes. Very knowledgeable, helpful and pointed us in the right direction on a couple of purchases. He is always quick to ask how our flying is going. I brought a few old cars in to see if we could get them running again and the service shop was quick to assess what we had. I have bought a stadium truck, three planes, radio, batteries, chargers etc. from Race Prep. They have a few other items too, like pinewood derby supplies we needed for Scouts. I am very happy to support another well run family business. Stop in you'll be glad you did; oh, and Lucy the store pet, is a favorite of my son. read more

First off I would like to comment on this T.B. review. Its a total crock and if you look through most of his reviews, they are all crap. I recently dove into the RC world head first and became very educated quickly through the staff at Race Prep. I have been to all the shops, Marty's, Hot Rod,Hobby People, you get the point. Now I will not bad mouth the others as they are decent as well but also have an attitude of being above working on cars and helping new people joining the sport. Spencer and the crew over there have been awesome to me from day one guiding me in the right direction and showing me how to work on my cars. I even have had one of them stop by my house after hours because I had a race the next day and was trying to complete a SC10 4x4 kit. The "pitbull" comment is also ridiculous as I am a parent of two boys who love to go to the shop for the simple fact that "Lucy" (the dog) is there at the shop to greet them every time we show up. If you are not a dog person the shop and dog owner will have her in the back. Once again, I have spent over $2,000 in the short time I have been in the sport and have turned into an avid track racer. Without the help of the staff here at Race Prep I would still be bashing in the street thinking my traxxas rustler was the best RC ever! Give it a try, and watch out for the pitbull as she may actually try to give you a nice welcome kiss. She's awesome read more

One of the last good hobbie / rc shops in So Cali. Can be forgetful and goofy, and they sometimes forget to put all your parts back on after very agonizing sloooooow service,, but still a good place to do business. The friendly dog that greets you is always a welcome attraction for us. We probably spend $1000+ a year with Race Prep and are much happier than when we did business with the stoners at Martys. Martys was a very un-fun, expensive, indifferent and painful place to shop and get service. Race Prep is the way to roll though they are sometimes knuckleheads. New location for 2013 BTW. read more
