This review is overdue. We had this service done a few months after we closed on our home in March 2020. Due to the pandemic and the nature of real estate market, we were not able to negotiate a radon inspection. After moving in a few weeks later, we found out that the previous owner died of lung cancer. I'm not saying the radon was what killed her, but radon is the 2nd cause of lung cancer. I want to thank the previous reviewers who recommended Ricardo. He truly is a professional who is wonderful to work with. Not only is he registered with the state for radon mitigation, he also has a Virginia Contractor's license. These are primary considerations for me when hiring a contractor. Ricardo arrived right on time at 8 am for the job and was supposed to be done by early afternoon. Our home had some unusual complications that weren't anticipated because of the way it was built. The job ended up taking him until very late in the day. He proceed with complete professionalism and grace and told me not to worry he "would get the job done!" One of my concerns was how messy the job was going to be. We have a finished basement with carpet so I covered it with the stick-on film for protection. Rick came with his own clean tarps and placed them on top of my film. As far as COVID protocols goes, I have never worked with a contractor in these past months who was more conscientious and careful than Rick. At the end of the job, there was not one speck of dust in the house and he had very neatly collected the pile of concrete dust that was created outside from the drilling into the basement, placed it in a cardboard box and double bagged it for the trash. Rick came to convert my passive system to an active system due to an increase of radon levels in the recent months. When he came, he realized that the passive system wasn't ideally installed to be converted to an active system. He proposed two different solutions and made sure I had all the facts. He worked the whole day repiping the system so the fan can be outside and still leverage as much of the existing passive system as possible. Ricardo Rodriguez of Radon Installation Contractors LLC did a great job with the mitigation at our house, and I highly recommend him. Were I to have it to do over again, I would definitely call him first and last if he was available to help us with a radon issue. He answered the phone call for my initial inquiry during what I retrospectively figured out must have been a family gathering for Memorial Day, he patiently answered my questions about his services and pricing, and asked pertinent questions about my home's structure and radon history, etc. The next day, he followed up with some email info, as he had said he would. We soon came to an agreement over the phone, and I was lucky enough to reserve an appointment for early the next week. He showed up slightly early, inspected the relevant areas, and we discussed and confirmed the planned installation configuration. He got to work right away, was very careful about choosing an effective and safe place to drill the side of my house for the exhaust, and began installation of the PVC piping and electrical components. He drilled the intake hole through the concrete basement slab, leaving literally no dust emissions in the area. He installed the interior and the exterior PVC as unobtrusively as one might reasonably hope, and showed me how to take it down and re-install it should we need access to the adjacent chimney for masonry work, etc. He completed the installation of the mitigation system components, and familiarized me with the meaning and use of the vacuum pressure sensing device which was reading a healthy .65" Water Column. That pressure measurement was quite reassuring, because in the course of drilling the basement slab intake hole, Ricardo had penetrated into the vicinity of the plastic drain tile pipe which, in our house, had been installed inside of the foundation perimeter. I had forgotten all about this and the fact that the drain for the stairwell we installed several years back flows into that drain tile. Were we just sucking air from the stairwell drain, or was there a meaningful negative pressure under the foundation that would expel radon gas out the pipe over our roof line? Read on. Ricardo also quite thoughtfully ascertained the low likelihood of a proper re-sealing of our basement slab after installation of plumbing work there during a remodel a few years ago. We breached the drywall in the affected area, and I was so grateful he thought of this: the floor slab was still open at the tub. He re-sealed it for me to get a good, tight negative pressure under our slab (except for the stairwell drain which wasn't practical to try to correct at this point). As Ricardo was preparing the final documentation for concluding our business, he charged me about 15 bucks more than I thought this was going to cost. That's obviously not a lot of money, but it annoyed me a bit, until I considered the extra work he had put in for which he had not explicitly contracted. Besides, I figured if we needed more work in the event that the radon measurement results didn't come in under the EPA Action Level, it would all come out in the wash. Our Fairfax, VA area house was built in the 70's. The EPA Action Level for radon in homes is 4 pCi/L (picocuries per liter) of air. When we bought the house in 1990, the charcoal canister radon measurement was 6.5 pCi/L, so we weren't all that worried about it. However, when we retested in 2006, the charcoal canister results measured, on average, 12.3 pCi/L in the basement. Now, after Ricardo's mitigation system installation, our Liquid Scintillation radon measurement was .4 pCi/L and .5 pCi/L, so our radon levels are now about 1/10 of the EPA action level! This was a much better result than I thought we had reason to hope for. We'll test again periodically, but now we can confidently make full use of the recreational and office space available in our basement. Thanks Ricardo! read more

Our entire house was vibrating after a roof installation. We eventually traced it to an old radon pump in our attic which was tucked in the back of a dusty and tight attic space in our old house and covered in tar from the new roof. I cleared a path as well as I could, but it was still bad. I assumed any contractor would say "thanks but no thanks" and would run away screaming. Ricardo looked at it and said "I can do this". And he did. It was a real PITA project, but he methodically got it done. No more vibrations and an almost silent pump. I'm so glad we chose Radon Installation Contractors to install our radon system. Ric was easy to reach and communicate with. He was also on time and did a fantastic job installing our radon mitigation system. I noticed radon levels would go up when our HVAC system didn't run for a few days, or when the weather changed. So, during the winter, our radon levels were higher even when we tried to open our windows to circulate air. It's been a week since Ric installed the radon mitigation system, and our levels are between 0.6 pCi and 1 pCi. Our week average was 0.8 pCi. Of course, this fluctuates depending on HVAC, weather, and other conditions. The week before the system was installed, we had a one week average of about 2.9 pCi, and this was with us opening windows often. So, we are very happy with the results of the mitigation system.
