We stopped in for breakfast, lunch as she made breakfast while I'm probably eating lunch. Do not judge this book by its cover. It may seem a little quaint. However the service was five stars. We started with a basket of fresh made from scratch biscuits.The owner even came out to check to make sure that our steaks were cooked correctly. We both had steak dinners with sides. The steaks were cooked perfectly medium rare. We ordered sides of fresh butter beans, baked apples , homemade mashed potatoes. Yes the potatoes were actually fresh mashed potatoes, no box mix here. We also indulged in deserts Keylime pie and a chocolate chess pie oh my my !!! Don't miss out on homemade goodness. The tea was fresh brewed. Definitely give this place a try. Oh, I hate doing this, but I hope to bring awareness to the management and staff. I met three friends there @ 5:45 on a Friday night. There was one hostess taking drink orders and one waitress taking food orders and serving. We ordered food by 6:00 and I am not exaggerating when I say, our food came to the table at 7:05. I was missing one of two sides that came with my burger. My friend's mashed potatoes were cold and his steak, luke warm. When the food arrived, we immediately had to ask for the check and to-go boxes because we had tickets to an event at the Appomattox Courthouse and our check-in time was 7:15. I have never posted a review in my life, but this was the worst restaurant experience I have EVER had. No ill will, but please improve the service. read more

I ordered the breakfast sandwich which was a biscuit, scrambled egg, and cheese. You can definitely get a meat in it, but I didn't. I have gone to the Rail Yard about 6 times in the past several months when I visit Appomattox. The food is always good and very reasonably priced. The owner is always circulating making sure customers are satisfied and the wait staff is very attentive. Side dishes are home made as well and food is made to order. My sweet bride and I were in Appomattox for the weekend and looking for dinner on a Saturday night. The hotel staff recommended the Rail Yard and we took their advice. We passed on the sports bar and went to the restaurant. I enjoyed a delicious brisket platter with the corn bread pudding; she found her country cookin' favs, chicken livers and butter beans. The food was somewhere beyond fantastic! But this review wouldn't be complete without a comment on the staff. They were helpful and friendly to everyone. I don't often write reviews, but this was such an "out of the way" jewel that I wanted to share it widely. We'd go out of our way to dine there again. My family and I were passing through Appomattox. We asked the hotel desk clerk for a recommendation for a place for dinner. He gave us a couple of fast food places and a steak house that had been closed for a year. So we decided to drive around to see what was available. It was 8:30 pm and Appomattox is very small but we found The Rail Yard Restaurant open and welcoming. This family owned restaurant serves deliciously prepared fresh vegetables and grilled, fried and smoked meats cooked to your preference. I've honestly tried very hard to support this local business, as I would like to see it succeed, but I will not go back again. If you choose to believe the 4 star reviews posted here, you will be disappointed. There is simply no reason to choose this restaurant over others in the area. The total lack of atmosphere, long wait times even when you are the only family in the entire place and below average quality is not enough to keep folks coming back. Our most recent visit included 6 different dishes. The food was simply a notch below average...again. So frustrating. Fish platter for $12.99 included one medium sized piece of overcooked fried fish (have never ordered a fish platter any where else that was less than 2 pieces of fish), store bought potato salad and baked beans that were simply heated pork n beans. NO hush puppies, bread or anything else to go with this platter. All fit on a tiny plastic school style lunch plate. All side dishes were blah, small portioned including watered down fried apples that were not fried, a lukewarm and very under-cooked baked potato, french fries that were old and not even hot. Cheeseburger was good size, but just a frozen patty that tasted blah as well as steaks that were way overcooked and super small. I'm so disappointed that this joint will likely end up shutting the doors as quickly as those that occupied the space before it. Advice to management: Serve good, hot food in timely fashion and plenty of it. If you can't serve it faster, serve hot biscuits and jam or rolls to keep customers happy while waiting. The small portions served here but with Applebees and Texas Roadhouse prices will send customers to Lynchburg for better quality and atmosphere at the same price. Play some music and hire more waitstaff. It cannot take you 35 minutes to get food for 6 when there is literally no-one else in the restaurant (not even when you are busy). You can easily improve atmosphere, but improving the quality of the food and increasing portion size is key to your success. This is a small town and folks come through the door expecting homemade food in a non-chain restaurant like yours, not reheated prepackaged stuff. Don't cut corners...we need a good restaurant and we want you to be here in 5 years. read more
