A place like this sets an expectation before you even sit down. Between the name and the way it presents itself, you expect a certain level of care. We came in for breakfast, missed the cutoff, and ended up ordering lunch instead. That shift ended up defining the experience. **FOOD** At the table, we had three different sandwiches, and each one had its own issues, but they all pointed in the same direction. I ordered the Handcrafted King Burger. The name suggests something made in-house, or at least something with a bit of character. What came out looked like a prefab patty. Perfectly round, evenly flat, with the kind of surface you usually see from a frozen product. Flavor was fine, but it didn't match what you expect from a brisket burger. The toppings were standard, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, but the lettuce portion was skimpy and the tomato was sliced so thick it threw the balance off. I ended up cutting it down myself just to make it easier to eat. The fries were fine. Nothing wrong, just nothing memorable. My wife ordered the French dip. It came out dry, which is the one thing that sandwich really can't afford. It didn't seem like it had been dipped at all before serving, and the meat leaned overcooked. The au jus on the side helped once we started using it, but by then you're correcting something that should have been handled in the kitchen. We ended up swapping meals, which usually says enough. My mom went with the BLT, and that was the most disappointing of the three. The bacon was overcooked to the point where it broke down into small pieces instead of giving any real texture. It ate more like bacon crumbles than strips. The tomato had the same issue as mine, cut too thick, and needed to be adjusted at the table. She did like the house chips. Those were crisp, not oily, and easily the most complete item that came out. Across multiple plates, the Swiss cheese stood out, and not in a good way. It had the look and texture of a lower-end processed slice rather than something you'd expect from a deli. It showed up more than once, which made it feel like a standard shortcut rather than a choice. **SERVICE** Service was steady. Our waitress stayed on top of refills and checked in without hovering. Orders were taken correctly, food came out in a reasonable time, and nothing got missed. **AMBIENCE** The space is clean and organized, and it's clear they take care of it. It's a little smaller than it looks online, but it works. Nothing feels out of place, and it's comfortable enough to sit and eat without distraction. **CLOSING** This feels like a place that might do one part of the menu better than another. Based on this visit, lunch didn't hold up. Too many small things were off across multiple plates, and it adds up. Holy smokes. Why I haven't eaten here for dinner before, I'm not sure. I already knew their breakfast was awesome, and I should've known their dinner would be equally as amazing. I ordered our food to go- twin pork chops, mac and cheese and green beans..and also- hamburger steak and gravy with mashed potatoes and green beans (which I didn't catch a photo of before it was completely consumed by my other half..lol). The pork chops were perfectly seasoned, no hot sauce needed, and the mac was well salted, no need for additional S&P. His meal was also tasty, being as he went to town on it the second I walked in the door..haha When I need a good comfort food meal, this will be my go to from now on. This is a real nice country breakfast place. It is very welcoming and warm setting. Plenty of parking. Once inside, I was very pleased with the setting, it was cozy and that "grandmas home kitchen" feel. There is a bar inside and appeared to be fully stocked of any and everything. I was greeted promptly and seated. It was just me so I decided to just sit at the bar and not take up a table that could be occupied by 4, they had a array of booths and tables to accommodate 4 or more folks. Once seated at the bar I was greeted by a super nice friendly waitress. I decided to order an omelette, toast. It was super fresh, hot, and tasty! Had breakfast here today early Sunday. Seated in a nice big deep booth. Coffee an sweet tea we're both very good. Western omelet was delicious, plenty of cheese an peppers. The potatos that came as a side should be a main really, there loaded with bacon an amazing. Wife's bacon an eggs she shared with baby we're perfect, good biscuits. We were visiting Virginia for the weekend and stopped by this restaurant late Sunday morning/afternoon. It was pretty busy, but they got us seated right away (4 top) since it is such a large restaurant with lots of tables. The only complaint I have about the food is that we had some bad cucumbers in our salad, but other than that everything was good. No complaints about the service. This place is pretty average, nothing really stood out to me other than the eye catching/intriguing look of the place when you drive by which is what made us stop. I would go back to this restaurant if I was in the area, but it wouldn't be on my list of places I have to go if I came back. read more

Loveeeeeee! This place is great! Right off the main road, & most definitely worth a stop!!! The decor is too fun, it's nice & clean,& the meals are very affordable. I got the chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, & rice pudding.. all for $13! & you can get a dessert as a side?! Oh yeah!!! Anytime I venture back home (I live in the Washington DC area, but Campbell County is where I grew up) I always have to come here at least once... Stopped here for dinner Friday night (Sept 15) while visiting family this weekend around 6:30 Pm. It was PACKED! So much so, there were tons of people outside waiting...which I'm not surprised, the food is amazing! This place stays slammed, and, despite being slammed quite often, the waitresses are absolutely amazing! Amazing service, amazing food, and even amazing prices! Def recommend the hamburger steak! Been going there for a few years, everytime we visit Lynchburg, we go to this restaurant multiple times. The food is delicious, the atmosphere is homey and the service is always fantastic. We haven't had a bad experience here and always leave with full bellies and good memories. We definitely recommend the cheese curds, those are always a big hit at the table, especially with marinara. Love this restaurant. One bad visit turned that around. I arrived at 3:20 not that busy. I was alone. There was a bald-headed gentleman and young lady behind the cash register. I counted over 5 different servers coming in and out of kitchen. I stood in front of the register for over 10 minutes. nothing. What really got me upset was a couple came in behind me that was waited on immediately. WOW I couldn't belive it. I am really mad but I like the restuarant so much I tried to calm down. Downsides were pretty pricey menu ($41 for 2 adults and 2 children for breakfast) and some delay when it came to getting seated. Only one staff member was allowed to seat guests and she was busy in the back or something - the very small entryway wound up getting backed up and there was a lot of jostling. eventually got resolved but we almost left. First time for lunch with my son. I had the phillycheese steak and ot was delicious! The steak was so tender and moist -it was the best one i have ever ate! My som had the bbq brisket sandwich and he really enjoyed it and said it was also delicious . My husband and I will be having date night and we will be trying the dinner out tonight. How 2 people can sit at the same table and have completely different experiences baffles me. My husbands food was all cold and greasy while mine was hot and at least edible. When he told the waitress about the food being cold she said she would tell the kitchen...she didnt, she just walked back over to the bar to chat with customers shed been chatting with the entire time. My husband also ordered the seafood platter that shouldve had clam strips but they never said they were gonna sub it with more shrimp which made it so not worth the cost. We didn't say anything about that since no one seemed to care that the food was inedible on his plate anyway. We wont be giving this place another chance. read more

It was Sunday afternoon I was heading back home after visiting Rustburg. Looking forward to a late lunch but La Carreta, the Chinese restaurant, and the courthouse cafe were all closed at this time. My boyfriend said his grandparents used to go to the Colonial to hang out back in the day when they were in college, it was the only place around at the time really. My boyfriend also said he used to go here all the time after basketball games, that being back when he was in grade school. So I was really looking forward to trying this restaurant. He said it was like a Cracker Barrel, surely enough there were rocking chairs outside but in addition they had cute benches made out of wood to sit on. The hostess was friendly and we were seated promptly. Our server was also nice and quick with our order. I looked at the menu while on my way there and I already knew what I was going to get. The menu on their website needs to be updated because online it says the shank steak was a dollar cheaper than in the restaurant. My boyfriend and I ended up getting the same thing. Country fried steak, with a side of mashed potatoes and gravy, and green beans. The food came out surprisingly quick, we were glad of this since we were both starving. Unfortunately nothing on our plates had flavor. Everything looked amazing. It wasn't bad but it wasn't good. It was all texture no flavor. I added some salt to see if it would help but it didn't. I would normally add hot sauce to things without flavor but you can't do that to this type of food. I could barely finish the mashed potatoes and I guess the bacon was just decor in the green beans because it did nothing for it. Honesty, this is an incredible restaurant. I went with a friend. The service was very good because the waiter was very attentive to our needs, kept our drinks full before they reached the bottom, and answered all of our questions. The food was amazing. We had two appetizers: the boneless wings (amazing) and the pretzel bites (also amazing). If you like burgers, get one of their burgers. I love burgers and especially big burgers so I got their double burger and it was one of the best burgers I have ever had. 10/10 recommend. read more

Our party of 12 chose this place for a brunch. It was a sibling and spouse brunch in conjunction with our annual Christmas celebration which is usually held in January. Our waitress was superb. The food was excellent and they put tables together so we could all be in the same room at the same table together. We ordered a variety of foods and there were no complaints. Plenty of offers on refills of beverages and coffee and attentiveness without being hovered over. This place does not take reservations and it would have saved some time if we could've called ahead to let them know we were coming. As it was, the waitresses had to stop what they were doing and get a place ready for us. We were fine with waiting, but they had to stop in the middle of their busy morning to get set up for us. Country diner. We had driven past the Colonial many time before going in there and I'm glad to say that it is now on our regular rotation for breakfast. That being said - this review is only for breakfast as we have not yet tried it later in the day. It does appear to be open for lunch and dinner as well. Rustic looking from the outside - it has a log cabin kind of appearance with some tables and rocking chairs on the front patio. This is definitely a place that the locals can be found and you notice a lot of family and friends coming in. The interior is best described as country-ish. Wood walls and standard diner tables set the mood. Large seating area in both the front and in the rear there is another room, also large. Service goes from downright friendly to grumpy. The menu is not extensive but there is pretty much something on there for everyone. Breakfast items are solid if nothing creative. My favorite, though I have never and will never try it, is the "brains & eggs"... And yes, my wife asked and they are indeed brains. That being said, everything ordered is spot-on. Eggs come out the way you asked for them and the servings are decently sized so that you will be full and usually have left overs. Coffee is hot and tasty and they are very good with getting the cup topped off. Bathrooms are clean and the prices are very reasonable. All in all a solid breakfast place.
